Even got to talk to her this time, before the show. We didn't say much worth recounting--I was mainly trying not to act like a star-struck geek (I think I was fairly successful). She played piano and guitar with Sebastian on bass, Craig "Motorcyle Man" Ross on guitar and autoharp-synthesizer (?), and someone named Greg [missed the last name] on pedal steel. All the side people played very well in that excruciatingly polite way people always play with Lisa. Sound was great. Songs were: Miamo Tutti (I think) Are You Electrified Candy Pearls Cowboy (dedicated to Sebastian) In the Maybe World* Out in June* I don't Wanna be a Wire* Somewhere Someone's Sleeping* In The Morning* Love is Just a Seed* (she tried to play this one on the autoharp thing and couldn't get it to work, had to quit after a verse or so) The World In Wonder* -- a song Lisa said had gotten her through tough times. It was written by Craig Ross. Yes! Lisa covered something! Into the Night The Red Thread* For an Encore she did: Party Time From a Shell It wasn't the best show I've seen her do (best was a couple of years ago at Cafi Du Nord in San Francisco), but it was good. She kinda turned up the "pretty knob" for the new songs, throwing in a lot of vibrato for her. Her voice wasn't at its best though. Lisa looked pretty happy--the happiest I've ever seen her. Kind of a betrayal if you ask me**. In fact (not sure this has anything to do with anything) I saw her before the show in front of the club and wasn't sure it was her because she was waving her arms so much. I don't know why Lisa Germano shouldn't wave her arms if she wants (she was probably just stretching)--it just seemed out of character somehow. Abba Rowland (pouty punkish singer-songwriter) and Eleni Mandell (sultry as all get out and sounding better than ever (though it was at least partly due to the sound; I've only ever seen her at the Makeout Room (in SF) before and the sound is pretty bad there)) opened. Eleni played with a terrific bass player who took some killer solos. - --Tom Lucas * These are from the new album; I'm just guessing at the names. ** joke - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address.
