And now I can say, she was alive and in good health, at least until that day. She looked so nice and so feline, I think she comes from the cat people. How is it that Lisa Germano can move with so much suppleness, without any kind of strain, just like she doesn’t make music, she is music, completely. And no martial kind of music. Eels is the good context for this. The name only. But on record, and without Lisa, you don’t find that... suppleness. It was the first time I saw Eels in concert, but I’m sure that without Lisa, and even with the new arrangements of some not-so-old songs (Novocaïne For The Soul, especially), Eels doesn’t really look like an eel, nor any fish alive. But this was possible, ‘cause E is sensitive and E obviously loves Lisa’s songs, and above all Lisa’s sounds which is more and more prominent in Eels’ music. It’s only justice that Lisa herself is so prominent during the gig too. But I would have like E to mention her name more prominently in interview either, ‘cause without the message from the list (I don’t remember your name, sorry, but your from Holland. Were you there in the Koning Elisabeth Zaal ?), how should I’ve known ? The way Lisa was playing the mandoline, the violin, the alto, the electric guitar or the recorder was absolutely significant to the success of the concert. I’m truly happy to have seen her in that context. It was the first time I saw her playing so many instruments. I’m sure she can play the drums too. So I get little idea of the way she works in a studio. And what will stick on my retina for months to come is the vision of Lisa who was hitting the timpanis with such a non-human sensuality. I think she comes from the cat people. If only she could find a good way to be what she IS, a musician, without any restrains of any sort. That can be my vow for this year. She’s so talentuous : the Van Dyke Park of the reverse tape, the Howe Gelb of the violin (the marvellous sound she’s able to take off her instrument is incredible), the Lisa Germano of her own voice, the Lisa Germano of her own words, the Lisa Germano of her own music. You can put her in any context you want to, she’s great enough now to stay herself ‘til the end of our world. I think this 'Lisa leaving the industry'-thing is very mysterious. She obviously wants to make her own music without any record-company restrains, but when she was signed to 4AD around 1993, she said that 4AD never told her to do anything, they just adviced her, but made perfectly clear that every artistic thing was totally up to her. That's my vision of 4AD as well, they're very keen on the music, as opposed to big labels, who only worry about money. Very strange, cos if they wanted to, I'm sure they could find a way to sell Lisa's records, stuff like "I Love a Snot", "Turning Into Betty" etc. must have a commercial value... right? i'll always wonder.. s - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address.
