Here's the answer!] Hello Windyboys and girls, I read somewhere in an underground French magazine of december 1999 a Joey Burn interview about his different projects (Calexico and OP8 above all) and he said Lisa phoned him (so still in December) to make something with him or them or I don't know. So Lisa still want to play and to record maybe, I hope so. For that site Turning-into-"bullshit", is it possible to send them a very mechant virus or something? Yeah, Heather Nova gets a great voice, but why does she have to show her too long legs all over the place? What's her problems? Is she looking for a "daddy cool" or something? Here's the answer!] * Kjetil Torgrim Homme | | You've all got that gorgeous album, right? Does anyone know if OP8 | are any good _without_ Lisa? (I'm skeptic to bands with male | vocalists.) The little I've heard, yes. (Her warm-up concert for Eels in Stockholm (fall 1998?) was broadcasted on Swedish Radio, they also sent some of the OP8 without Lisa, which was pretty good). Additionally, "Hisser" by Howe Gelb of OP8 is excellent, IMHO. Got a very good version of "Cracklin' water", too. - -- Martin Eggen http://www.stud.ifi.uio.no/~martineg/ - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. I had no idea it was on but heard it in the car. Mr E introduced Lisa Germano, much to my surprise, as "an official member of the Eels right now". She spoke, sang, played, helped choose songs... She was name-checked at least 5 times by Mr E, probably more. (And was wished a happy Valentine's day by the band, too.) The set was quite odd. I haven't heard anything from their new album (is it out yet?) so the tracks weren't familiar; the set still sounded really good to me but not to the band itself, which did perhaps 5 songs, but seemed pretty unhappy with the way quite a few of them turned out. The Radio 1 format seemed to kill the the band off a bit. They were left to their own devices to play as many songs as they wished to, but someone hadn't told them that there'd be no "voice from above" in between performances. So... there was lots of "What should we do now? Do we just keep playing? Maybe we're not being broadcast any more. Yeah, they probably pulled the plugs." "Lisa, what shall we play next?" [Background muttering that I didn't hear with the noise of the car.] "How about about the second song we have?" suggests someone moronic-sounding. "Birds," decides Mr E. "Lisa wants Birds - let's play that." They play Birds. "What should we do next?" Lisa says, "Anything but the last one." (I don't know whether this was because it went badly, Lisa hated it, or she had suggested something else and Mr E's decision to play it had been a joke.) At one point, during an extended silence, presenter Steve Lemacq eventually had to turn up his mike to reassure them that their set was still being broadcast live, and that this was the usual format on his show - to leave bands to do their own thing, uninterrupted. "So how are you doing? Is it going okay?" "We're a mess," mutters Mr E. But we're here to sort out the mess." They continued and sounded better. There were moments when you could hear distinctly Germano-like arrangements in the mix. Lisa led into one song with a Glockenspiel-like instrument that Mr E named but I've forgotten the name of. Radio 1 live sessions were regularly released on vinyl and then CD a few years ago; not sure if that's still happening but anyone interested should e-mail Steve. At the worst, a regular Radio 1/Germano fan could find out when the session's likely to be repeated and tape it. E-mail: steve.lemacq@bbc.co.uk You can also visit his Radio 1 pages. He's a cool presenter, and really loves the music he plays. That's rare over here. Not sure about the US. Sorry if I've repeated earlier information. I never expected to post to this list, and only get a chance to read the info here occasionally. I asked if it would be released on some sort of record, and when (if ever) this edition of his show will be aired on BBC World Service (they usually broadcast Steve Lamaqc).
