[Jun Suzuki ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2000 10:59:18 GMT From: "Christian Boyon" Subject: sycophant Out of Context That's very interesting, I say thank you for answers I'm glad to read and someone answers me I'm out of context and that the problem is far more deep-rooted than my style or my musical tastes might suggested. I say "very interesting" without any trace of cynicism 'cause it's very possible I have a problem somewhere which could effectively be from very far in my own past, when I was so shy I made myself almost transparent (or translucid?). Now maybe I want to do the other way, make myself noticed, make myself seen, for example, in being out of context everytime I have something to say. And when you want to do any other way you are either pretentious, either eccentric and as my message contained no trace of humour, it is pretentious. On the other way I still think some Lisa Germano's fans may be interested in other kind of music, in some very specific one like improvised music 'cause for me there is a link between the way Lisa is playing her instruments and total improvisation. If I was keen of classical music, I would try to talk about which influences you can find in her music. The richness of Lisa's music affords this. When I listen to her records, I think about Gastr Del Sol and Jim O'Rourke and This Heat and Charles Hayward or the first time someone used reversed tapes, or concrete music or The Velvet Underground and John Cale and the New York avant-garde today (for example, if you take her voice and the rhythm out of many of her songs --I mean the obvious rhythm, what make you feet-tapping-- the richness and the intricacy of sounds, the inventiveness of the arrangements could be enough in themselves and for me the music she produced is strong enough to appear on John Zorn’s Tzadik. Maybe I have to ask John.) and also the way George Martin arranged some Beatles' great albums. I think about improvised music 'cause she improvised a lot. One of her favorite collaboration was on the Linda Perry's record 'cause she's the only artist Lisa worked with who asked her nothing but to improvise. And that's why she was fed up touring with Simple Minds or John Mellencamp : she had to play the same things every night. And that's why I think she enjoyed touring with the OP8 project : that was a bit uncomfortable 'cause Howe Gelb loves « works in progress » (he improvises a lot more, always moving from guitars to keyboards and vice versa. About his keyboards style, it's difficult for me not to think about Thelonious Monk, I'm sorry). About the tribute, I’m very glad to hear about it, but what can I add ? Maybe I can do something more, but I still think I’m to late. Two years ago I made a very bad remix of one Love Circus’ song I can’t remember the title (I broke it up clumsily –that’s a word I like- and I added a very badly recorded big drum sound over). I play the guitar too but since I’ve discovered Derek Bailey or John Russell or the last Spontaneous Music Ensemble’s records (I’m sorry, I’m name-dropping maybe), I stopped learning anything classically technical just to play, just to improvise. I do it for myself and maybe one day for my friends in case they want to laugh a bit. (Maybe what makes me out of context very quickly is the way I always go to far in digressing –does it exist in English : digression, you are telling a story and one thing makes you think of something else which makes you think of something else until you don’t know where you come from). So, I meant I’m very interested to listen to Lisa Germano’s songs played by her beautiful fans. And a dream I have could be to convince (to persuade ?) Lisa to improvise with me, why not, and/or to improvise with other musicians. I think it could be a lot of fun for her. And believe me, if one day she’ll do that, she won’t be booed for being a too intimate Eels’ support act. Anyway, I think she isn’t quite interested to play that kind of music and why does she have to ? She loves melodies, she loves well-made songs and she is one of the best in composing them. Beyond that she throws genuine arrangements all over her songs which would make every Jim O’Rourke on earth become livid. She is quite a genius. Does anyone noticed that ? Thanks for reading Hope everybody’s fine enough to kick is own ass for awhile Christian From Belgium ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. Now I realize I'm not the only one in my country who loves Lisa's music. About the tribute: Simple as this: The members of this list have decided to make a tribute CD on Lisa's musics. Some members will tape their own version of any of the songs, and send them to Joe. He'll make a compilation and record some CD's for all of us. Lisa will be offered some copies of it as well. :) - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. While I'm not sure the CD will have a conventional "cover", there will be a companion booklet. So anything inspired by Lisa's work is welcome. I have tried multiple times to contact BMI people (to see if there are any legal issues since we're not going to sale this CD) but no one has returned my calls or emails. Again, the address is: Joe Horne 32 Huntington Place Drive Atlanta, GA 30350 And please include a self-addresses stamped package if you wish to have your original artwork/music recording returned. And please (if possible) include a photo (or drawing) of yourself. I never did hear anything from Reid. I still feel bad about "taking control" of this project (considering how excited Reid was). I just didn't want it to disappear and not happen. And I hope Reid is okay...wherever he is. If anyone knows anything about Reid, please post it. Many of us just want to make sure he's okay. I don't think anyone is angry at him. That's all.
