Tom, your comparison of the two Happinesses was thoroughly interesting and interestingly thorough! I have the 4AD version, and I'll keep an eye out for the other one. However, if I had see the Capitol CD first, instead of the 4AD one, and I noticed "these boots are made for walkin'" on it, I might not have bought it. :8-{ I have seen Lisa live (with the Latin Playboys) and I wish I could answer your query about her live performances of the songs, but I am not nearly so attentive to detail as you. I tend to experience things in more of an impressionistic way. I really hope we get to see her again. If so, I will pay more attention to such nuances as those that you described. A couple of listers saw her at Largo recently and can probably tell you something. As for song order: The other day I put my five Lisa CDs on random play for the first time, and it sorta shook me up a little bit. I heard things I had not noticed before. Tom, I look forward to hearing your input if the list does one of those "What else are you listening to?" things. ~kc - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. I'm actually a bluegrass fiddle player, believe it or not, and don't listen to much rock or pop at all. I bought Happiness originally because I wanted to check out her chops on the violin. Little did I realize that her violin playing, while very nice and distinctive (frequently sounding like a small Greek chorus of whiney geese (I mean that in a good way!)), would turn out to be a fairly minor aspect of what I like about her music. Anyway, my latest musical obsessions, besides Lisa, are: Gillian Welch (especially "Hell Among the Yearlings") Steve Earle (everything) Beck (except for "Mutations"--and I haven't heard his latest yet, don't know about that) Take 6 (the first two albums "2 much 2 say" and the other one that I forget the name of (yeah, okay, they're a gospel group, never mind that, they're fantastic!)) Lyle Lovett (especially his first two) The Crooked Jades ("Going to the Races"--but that's my band, I'm biased!) - --Tom Lucas - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. I hope what you're saying isn't true... You mean the "Inconsiderate Bitch" EP has *THIRD* versions of some songs?! I passed up the chance to buy that EP several times because I assumed they were just the 4AD versions... ARGH! On the other hand, I think I liked "Energy" from the Capitol version better than the 4AD version, just because it has more... (you know this is coming)... "energy". Okay pun over. Also I like "Dresses" on Capitol better because the cynicism doesn't get in the way of the sort of... transcendingness of the song. The 4AD version (to me) sounds all dark and nasty. robey - -- Robey Pointer | I'm not clever enough for a sig. robey@lag.net | http://www.lag.net/~robey - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. When I saw Lisa live in San Francisco she started to perform 'Dresses' more like the 4AD version and then stopped halfway through saying how much she hated the song! So I think her dreary version on 4AD might reflect her dissatisfaction with the sentiments of the lyrics. > - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address.
