Unfortunately the show was advertised as starting at eight, and I got there about four minutes late, and Lisa was already playing (it's rare in SF for any shows to start on time); I'm not sure how much we missed. Anyway, I was really irritated for a number of reasons. ONe, when we walked in, everyone was jabbering and only people sitting right in front of the stage were listening to her (it was at Bimbo's 365, which is a beautiful, albeit huge, club). There was a very high percentage of older people at this show. Now, I don't want to sound ageist, but at least in San Francisco, grey hair at shows these days inevitably means: in their forties, well-off former hippies who think they're the shit and really "cool," and probably work for KFOG or some other radio station, and have absolutely no social graces whatsoever. So, very few of them were paying attention to LIsa and it was kind of an uneasy mix, although she seemed happy enough. We were standing only about twenty feet away from the stage, and there were two older guys in front of us in expensive lambskin jackets. Pretty quickly one loudly exclaimed, "I think I'm going to take this opportunity to go take a piss!" and walked off. "Fine," I thought. However, he came back and loudly launched into a story about how he'd run into someone who "really liked this jacket" to his friend (who, it should be said, looked like he was trying to listen). Both my girlfriend and I tapped his shoulder and asked him to stop talking, or at least move back further. He reared back and barked at me, "Oh, what? *This* is important to you?" "Yes," we said. He did keep it down after that although when Lisa said she only had one song left he said "thank god!". Asshole. Anyway, that really soured the night for me. We only saw Lisa play for about half an hour before the break and Latin Playboys. Now, I really like the Latin Playboys albums, and I liked them live, but the crowd really pissed me off. I ran into some people I used to know in college outsite between sets and one of them said "who was that woman?" When I told them a little bit, she asked, "How old is she?" "I don't know, thirty three or something." "She looks so young! But you can do lots of things with makeup!" Ack! Christ, I felt like I was never going to be able to communicate anything to these people who quickly went off to get stoned. The Latin Playboys were fantastic, but it was so crowded that we left early because we wound up standing next to someone who wasn't wearing deoderant. My only complaint about Latin Playboys live is that they kind of toned down the Latin influence and occasionally slipped into rock-based jams, which was kind of boring. But they're wonderful musicians. Nevertheless, I'd recommend going. Maybe the crowd will be better in your town. Lisa was wonderful, she played a few new songs, notably one called "alcohol," and it reconfirmed for me the fact that I absolutely love Lisa and her music, and wish that she could make it up from LA to SF more often. I do, however, know how to conduct myself during public performances. Reflecting on my own experience, those who've most often deserved to be told to "Shut the f*** up!" during public performances weren't in my age group. And in general, the ones driving around "sharing" their music with everyone within a one-block radius...well, they're not usually senior citizens (even though they probably can't hear as well), are they? - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address.
