OP8, comprised of the three consistent members of Giant Sand along with Lisa Germano on vocals, understands this. The band's music is created with instruments repairable by hand: piano, a quiet cello that creeps around, a music box, a restrained, well tempered guitar, bass and drums. OP8's breathtaking creations are thick and sturdy; you could put all your weight on them and they wouldn't bend. Songs about the wind, the rain, hate, sand, mortality, rust, bitterness - all the organic elements and base emotions that give us grief and inspiration - are at the heart of Slush. There are no songs about Van Halen, Buddy Holly, or stereos here, no stream-of-consciousness, postmodern ramblings. Slush is a near-perfect album, broad in its scope, cohesive without being single-minded, filled with perfectly placed interludes, and capped off with a lilting cover of Buffalo Springfield's "Round and Round." But it's that tone that provides the wonder, the aural equivalent of warm breath on a bare shoulder. How do you capture the true expression of the human spirit? Start here.
