I saw Lisa live in London, a week last Friday ('upstairs' at the Garage in Islington). I've seen Lisa twice before, both of which were superlative experiences. The garage is a very small place, with standing room only, perfect for the intimacy of a solo performance. I had seen Dar Williams a week earlier in a much larger seated venue, and was very disappointed when that concert failed to connect with me emotionally. Most, if not all, 'Dar Listers' present seemed to think differently, suggesting that either they are blinded in their respective devotion, or I am unable to judge a good gig when I see one. I suggested on that mailing list that Lisa might be a better bet. Lisa opened with a track from 'Geek' - I recall that 'secret reason', 'geek the girl', and possibly 'guy like you' got an airing, suggesting that Lisa still identifies pretty strongly with these songs. Most of the rest were taken from Slide, which has just been released in the UK (I was waiting in vain for an LP release, which prevented me from importing it from the states). Lisa played only guitar or electric piano, which came across well. I was transfixed throughout, though a little disappointed at the length (1 hour). At the time, I felt a bit subdued, and later realised that I had been pretty much emotionally drained. There are very few performers around with such direct emotional honesty. I really like slide, especially 'no colour here', 'wood floors', and 'guillotine'. It struck me initially to have a much darker mood than love circus, and I was surprised to hear lisa interviewed (on the morning becomes eclectic ra feed) to say that she was actually quite happy (back in July). I suppose resignation can equate with being realistic. I await Lisa's return. Her songs and performances get through to me like no others (hope that doesn't sound like blind devotion).
