Personally, I think it's very beautiful. Certainly, it is different from the other works but I think it is a very focused album. For example, the songs seem to be 'complete.' In the past, Lisa's songs were so experimental that they often came across as a little 'unfinished'. This is not a bad thing at all. These new songs are just more concrete (to me). They can all stand on their own....as individual experiences whereas many of her earlier songs seemed to be a part of something bigger. You could any song off of Slide and play it without anything else (any other songs) and it would be good. I feel like I'm not making much sense. I just wanted to say I think 'slide' is great. What do the rest of you think of 'slide'? - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. I'm not sure if that's the word I want to use. But you can't just stick the cd in and say "Hey listen to this song it's called Cancer of Everything" to someone who doesn't listen to Lisa Germano. It's a lot...easier? to listen to Slide. I think because it does sound complete. It's very hard to explain. Emily MikeNelson: DO NOT SUPPORT JIM CARREY. IT MAKES IT WORSE FOR EVERYONE!!! They're playing here in NYC soon, and I want to know if I should shell out the bucks for it. I also agree that the relatively quietness of the list lately has a lot to do with people's disappointment with Slide. But I have to say that the cd, which I listened to this morning, is growing on me -- especially the title track, Crash, Wood Floors and Turning into Betty. The reason I couldn't get into it at first is that there isn't as much inflection in her voice as before. (Remember her repeated "hey"s from I Love a Snot?) I think that her use of an outside producer is partly to blame. When it was just her in her room, I was happier. But I think that Slide still has it's bright spots. And Rocio, if you're reading this, I'll be making that tape this week, I promise! And I do think Lisa gets better with each album-- although of course I love each one. I put the album on thirty minutes after I bought it (and gave up listening to my new Dash Rip Rock record, even) and by the time she got to the chorus of "Way Below the Radio" I was a slave to that album. I think that Lisa's songwriting is improving as well; gone are the baroque indulgences of "Schizophrenic" which I really tried hard to like, and in their place we have songs like "Wood Floors", "When I Think Of Love", "Crash", and "Reptile", which has my favorite Lisa line of all time. I think what Lisa does with this album is combine the light, breezy pop of Excerpts with the stripped down, skeletal sound of Geek, and come up with something more effective than either. I'm not sure it has quite the "concept album" cohesiveness of _Geek the Girl_ or, to a lesser degree, _Love Circus_, because there's a bit more variety on this new one. But I still think the songs are fantastic, the production incredible (even with that weird little hip-hoppy beat on "Way Below the Radio," which is still one of my favorite tracks on the album), and Lisa's lyrics better than ever. And it didn't have to "grow on me" at all -- to tell you the truth, it took longer for _Geek_ and _Love Circus_ to grow on me because of their abrasiveness. Not that abrasiveness is a bad thing, of course, especially the emotional power of Lisa's material. Anyway, I'm rambling. --matt J - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. Even if she isn't playing in New York you should shell out the bucks for it -- E is fantastic, and I'd feel comfortable recommending the new album to any Lisa fan. > I also agree that the relatively quietness of the list lately has a lot > to do with people's disappointment with Slide. I wasn't disappointed at all, and besides, three of the songs WERE just her in her room; I can't remember which ones, but there's lots of information about how she's recorded and produced her various albums in my interview, so if you haven't already sent me your address, you might want to so I can mail you one (I'm sending them out at the beginning of next week). -Matt J - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. I think Lisa's glad, too -- she talks about that in the article. I think one of the reasons I like it so much is just because SHE likes it so much, and because it represents a more positive outlook than her earlier albums. --Matt J PS I'll send you that article next week. > Carolyn Dorsey > 135 Park Ave apt 1 > Hoboken, NJ 07030 > > > > ------- > The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ > ------- > To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: > unsubscribe sycophant > > If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, > they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list > address.
