I was really impressed with the show, sort of a female supergroup rather than a lilith fair type concert. Before the suffragettes played, shonen knife opened. It seemed like a strange choice for an opening act. In fact, it seemed strange to have an opening act at all. Shonen Knife is kind of fun with all of their songs about food and 3-chord pop/rock. I didn't even know Jane Siberry was part of the suffragette sessions, so I was very excited to see her come out on stage with the rest of the women. It was great to see her and Lisa playing various instruments on nearly every song. There was a large Indigo Girls following: they sang along with every Indigo Girls song played. Non-indigo crowd pleasers were the Breeders' Cannonball with Lisa on lead vocals, and David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust with Gail Ann Dorsey on lead vocal and guitar. Jane Siberry's You Will Be Born got a large response, too. I suspect very few people there had heard it (or any Siberry songs). There's some surprises in that one. I hadnever heard of Gail Ann Dorsey, but she really impressed me on her songs, as well as with her musicianship playing guitar, bass, and drums. I just reminded myself her name; I'm planning to buy an album of hers soon. It was fantastic to see Lisa play so many instruments: mandolin, Violin, keyboards, accordion. She had a couple of great solos on violin and accordion. This was my first time seeing her live. I hadno idea she was *that* small. It made me wonder if she was playing viola up there. All the musicians seemed to be really into it and having a lot of fun. Next to the Newport Folk Festival, this was my favorite concert this year. Well, I'm headed back to Cincy tonight for the Cowboy Junkies show. bye Damian ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Sep 1998 15:47:20 -0400 From: Joe Wiencis Subject: RE: sycophant suffragette Wow, that sounds pretty cool. I need it quick-fast-as-possible so I can finish my Lisa Germano article. Speaking of which, I did the interview today and will tell the list all about it as soon as this deadline isn't over my head anymore. But PLEASE, if anyone's still got it in their "read messages" folder or whatever, forward me that list of musicians. Thanks. --matt J PS For fans in LA, she's playing the Roxy tomorrow night (opening up for the Eels) and the Largo on Friday night. Hope to see some of you at the Largo -- I'll be the long-haired boyish-looking twenty-something in the "Legendary Pink Dots" T-shirt. - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant ------------------------------ End of sycophant-digest V3 #89 ****************************** ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to sycophant-owner@smoe.org
