Bilbo asked: > Did anyone see Lisa in NY??? Yes. Quite a few people did, although not as many as were at her show at the Knitting Factory last April. The reason I say that is that usually the KF will let people sit on the floor of the main stage area during the opener and then force everyone to stand during the headliner, just because so many people are filing in, but at this show everyone was allowed to stay seated. Which Lisa commented on right away saying "It's so nice to be playing with you all sitting down." Basically the show seemed to be an impromptu way to showcase the new music and try it out live. Ummm... the reason I haven't posted about this, besides the fact that I usually lurk, is that I was too tired to post getting home that night and the next day I couldn't piece together what lyrics for the new material that I exactly remembered when, so if I'm wrong about anything, I'm sorry. I remember one really beautiful lyric about being unable to trust feeling good and feeling more comfortable with feeling bad. That may not have been the first song she played but the first song was moody and sad and she said "That's a song off my cheerful new album! Well, it's happier than that." There was also a song about childhood memories and dancing on a hardwood floor that led into a really pretty melody and lyric and, well, the new songs are just sort of spliced together for me, but the melodies were varied and sad and peaceful and nice. Lisa played with no accompaniment... she alternated from a really gorgeous wooden acoustic guitar, to piano, to electric guitar. Someone from the audience shouted that the electric was a nice guitar, even though the wooden one was much much nicer, and Lisa said thanks, that at least it hadn't been banged up on the plane like the wooden one. Throughout the show, she would play at the piano and one song would segue into the next, and the audience, which was being very attentive would hold their applause to let her finish her thought through to the next piece. Old stuff... There wasn't much. She played "If I Think Of Love" (which is on the new album, anyway, correct?). Later in the show, she played "Cowboy", finishing by saying "that's a stupid woman and a bad man" in the song and that it became the inspiration for what was coming next.... which was "We Suck." She also played Sophia, which was gorgeous until as it winded down, someone in the audience decided to sing Dorothy's part on There Are More Kitties in the World... with a big meow. To anyone who wasn't familiar with Lisa, like my friend who was with me, it really sounded like the guy was saying she sounded like a cat. Shortly after, Lisa was seguing to the next song and just kinda realized that most people weren't talking amongst themselves and she said it was so nice that everyone was so quiet, that she's used to people talking over her. The audience kinda took that as meaning that she was hinting that they weren't applauding and broke into a huge ovation, afterwhich she said "I didn't mean that!!!" The same guy who meowed yelled out "How's Miamo-Tutti" and Lisa said he was great but that Dorothy had died which was devastating but that now she has a cat named Lou and that Miamo-Tutti is so in love with Lou that it's better off that Dorothy isn't around. She came out for an encore after because people loudly applauded, but she had none prepared. She played a song from Moon Palace and sorta forgot it midway and joked "maybe I better not even play this".. and people shouted "Bruises" and "Trouble" and she just said "I have to work those up. I don't know my own songs. We'll have to stick to this." And she played a bit and then just said "That's enough of that" and smiled and sincerely waved goodnight, and it seemed like kinda an appropriate ending cause the night was more like a get together than a show. ack - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jul 1998 19:17:12 EDT From: Kitimitsu@aol.com Subject: Re: sycophant lisa in NY? It's pretty easy for that to happen in clubs that size or smaller and for some reason, it's really easy at the Knitting Factory, which is such an inviting place. Just walk in and see the headliner drinking coffee in the front room. The classic time was when my friends and I got there late for a Geraldine Fibbers show, shortly after the start of the opening act (Quintron and Miss Pussycat)... we went up to the balcony to see what was available there, found a great, great spot and realized we were standing right next to Carla Bozulich (lead singer of the Fibbers)! We kinda just let her enjoy Quintron, but it was a fun, weird moment. ack - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Jul 1998 00:31:34 -0400 From: Mark Edgington Subject: sycophant More Lisa dates & Knitting Factory This picked off the subbacultcha (Pixies) list: >Date: Fri, 10 Jul 1998 11:51:28 -0400 (EDT) >From: Epic_Records@epiccenter.music.sony.com >To: indigogirls@listserv.music.sony.com >Subject: Indigo Girls > >Are you ready to rock? She seemed very approachable before the show. She was hanging by the bar, drinking tea, and I would have felt at ease talking to her except I was engaged in another conversation. The show was mostly new songs, in the quiet vein. There was a very beautiful version of "My Secret Reason". Also, "If I think of Love" from the OP8 album. I interpreted her comments about the encore to mean that it was an old song but had never been recorded. She said it would be on her next album (not the new one). She has become more and more at ease onstage over the years. Although, I have to say: my favorite show was the first one I saw her at, when she toured with Pale Saints (another great band) to promote "Happiness". She had a full band with her, and they sounded great. She seemed incredibly, painfully shy, hiding behind her bangs, not making any eye contact with the crowd, trying to disappear into her songs. I always enjoy her shows, but I would love to see her with a band once more. And "Happiness" was such a brilliant album... - - Mark - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Jul 1998 00:39:02 EDT From: StelthBear@aol.com Subject: sycophant Lisa on tour with Indigo Girls and friends Just checked Billboard Online (www.billboard.com) and it reported that Lisa will be joining an all-female lineup that the Indigo Girls have put together for a two-week, 12-city tour dubbed the "Suffragette Sessions Tour." No band? I have seen her 5 times and its always a different set up. On the "Geek" tour she had a full band, (I went 2 nights in a row). then she came all the way out just to play one show in Boston for an AIDS benefit, with just her grand piano. Then she came pre- "Love Circus" with a full band, and then again when "Love Circus" came out, with just a bass player. So what is it this time????? Oh and by the way, she's just a human being, so don't be afraid to go up and talk to her, she's actually very nice.
