Korke" Subject: sycophant Everyone hating everyone else On the question of shutting down the list, bagging other people's taste in music etc... Look. I don't think a little good-natured ribbing about bands or singers people like really ought to upset anyone too much. If you like Genesis, you've got to expect a bit of ribbing. I don't think many people at all would say that they HATE Genesis, and most would say that they are a band of genuine talent. Just for example. But surely anyone who's a fan of Genesis, or the Smashing Pumpkins, or Guns and Roses, or whoever, would recognise that those bands are kind of commercial and therefore apt to be a bit ummm lightweight at times. I certainly accept that about some of the musos I enjoy and I've taken joking criticism about it on many occasions. I don't mind it... hell, some people watch Friends and they're still worthwhile human beings. We KNOW everyone on this list likes Lisa, so we KNOW we all have at least some of our musical taste in common. We KNOW we could all agree on a CD to put on if we met for a party. Just because some of us could legally drink and some of us couldn't isn't really a big issue; frankly I'd rather be smoking dope at that party anyways. I really doubt that anyone's been offended by either the Smashing Pumpkins or the Genesis knocking that's happened lately. I for one have been very glad to see the list alive and kicking lately, and personally feel that we're a group of personalities that can keep getting along just fine. There's certainly no need to shut the list down, and for mine, there's not really any need to even curtail the ribbing that's been happening. Has anyone been really upset? As I said, I doubt it, and I'm certain nobody intended that. Start saying Lisa sucks and we can all get shirty with each other. But then even she said that... "we suck..." :) I hope this post isn't too long. I'd just hate to see things go down the gurgler when everything seems cool to this subscriber at least. It arrived today, and I'm taking a few days off work to get it set up and in production. At some point between Saturday and Tuesday, smoe.org will be shut down to install the new hardware. The downtime will probably be 4-6 hours. During the time we're off-line, mail will be queued up at my ISP so no mail will be lost. I'll send out another announcement once the new gear is online. Music has been a HUGE part of my life ever since I was a really young child. I'ts unfortunate that most people are limited in their musical taste. "I only like metal" or "hip hop" or "alternative" or whatever. As far as the MEATMEN go, they are insane. Tesco the singer / creator is really a cool guy, he makes fun of everyone and everything. Most shouldn't be taken too seriously. They are a great old-school early 80's American hardcore band. If you like stuff like old circle Jerks, DRI, MDC and JFA (Jodie Foster's Army) then you'll love the Meatmen! There are virtually NO more of these types of bands anymore. In fact it seems the term "hardcore" unfortunately has a whole new meaning. (sob) a lost art. ON TO LISA.- I have always enjoyed such bands as Mellencamp, the Police, etc. The truth is when the LONESOME JUBILEE LP was released I fell in love with LISA! I was already a Mellencamp fan from years earlier, and had seen her play live with him 4 times. To further answer your question.... I had actually been listening to Suzanne Vega around the same time that Geek the Girl was released, so I guess you could say she is a connection to Lisa. I opened the local phoenix one day and saw an add for "LISA GERMANO new LP Geek the Girl", and a date for a show in Providence. Because I knew who she was, I went - was really impressed, talked with her after the show, and then went again the next night to see her play in Boston. The rest as they say... is history. Sorry for such a long post everybody. -Brian Oh yeah, I hear the same thing from people about Suzanne Vega. The truth is Luka and Tom's Diner are the only 2 of her songs that I DON'T like. Pam and other fellow Sycophants, Nope, I'll bet I have the distinction of being the Model T on this list. I'm 46 and though I'm basically a classical fan (Brahms and Poulenc are my favorites) at this stage of the game - except for Lisa and a few select others. I really love many of the artists you listed, esp: Laura Nyro and Tim Buckley. (Saw Tim in 1970, he was drunk and stoned and wound up in the local dungeon after starting a brawl in a pub, nothing unusual for him I'm afraid! Did he really think he could take on the SUNY Brockport football team? Sometimes an artist's creativity knows no bounds). I wonder if you've heard any Nick Drake, another sadly underappreciated tragic figure? Sometimes I wonder if we aren't too hard on the artists we claim to love, worship them like saviours but crucify 'em when the time comes..."Make damn' sure we wash our hands, seal their fate." -Gregg ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 23:32:41 -0600 From: Ching Li Subject: sycophant Future Lisa events this just mentions Lisa leaving the Pumpkins tour, no exact reason though and what she'll be up to. LISA GERMANO LEAVES SMASHING PUMPKINS TOUR The Smashing Pumpkins and Lisa Germano have decided to go their separate ways in Germany, just as the Pumpkins' European tour got underway. As previously reported in allstar, multi- instrumentalist Germano was expected to play several unconventional European venues from May 14 through June 9 with the Chicago- based act and five other hired guns, including drummer Kenny Aronoff, keyboardist Mike Garson, and percussionists Dan Morris and Stephen Hodges. However, the pairing of Germano and the Pumpkins ended before the first date of the tour in Hamburg, Germany at Speilbudenplatz. A spokesperson for Germano says that after rehearsing with the band in Chicago and in England in early May, she was asked to leave the tour by the Pumpkins, but was never told why, other than "it just isn't working out." The spokesperson also says that Germano heard that the Pumpkins allegedly told reporters during a recent European press conference that the reason behind the split was because they had a fight, which is untrue, according to Germano. While the Pumpkins continue touring in Europe, followed by dates in Australia, Japan, and North America, Germano is expected to start a club or coffeehouse tour of her own in late July and August in support of her upcoming album, Slide, which is due out on July 21 on 4AD Records. Spokespersons for the Pumpkins could not be reached for comment at press time. ------------------------------ End of sycophant-digest V3 #34 ****************************** ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to sycophant-owner@smoe.org
