I thought I'd send a mail to wake you all up (if indeed = there is anybody else actually out there?) I got into Lisa following a review and article in the excellent MOJO = magazine of the 4AD LP "Happiness". I could not stop playing this, = especially as I identified strongly at the time with the recurring = themes of emotional breakdown etc. I still play this LP regularly now, = together with the equally excellent "Love Circus" which has grown on me = tremendously during the last year or so. I think that "Geek the Girl" is = also very good (but I don't play it that much as it is on CD only, and I = am a vinyl junkie). I saw Lisa live previously at the Mean Fiddler = (London) probably about 2 years ago - I missed her last London = performance as I was working in Thailand at the time. I tend to end up = at these sort of things on my own - it is always difficult persuading my = friends (many of whom only have a passing interest in things musical) to = attend a Lisa Germano (or Katell Keineg) gig. Both these artists are = criminally talented, and yet I suspect that not enough people buy their = LP's. Anyway back to Lisa. The Mean Fiddler gig was about half full, = which was enough for a decent atmosphere. The way that Lisa tore into = songs from "Happiness" in a very personal way, was incredibly moving, = and this gig remains firmly ensconsed in the top 10 gigs of my life to = date. With this memory I attended the gig last Thursday. Dingwalls is a = pub/club of the size perfect for an intimate gig with atmosphere. = Following two pretty average support bands, OP8 and Lisa came on at = about 10pm, and played an enjoyable 90 minute set - I've got the OP8 = "Slush" CD and like it a lot. All members of the band are very talented = musicians. Lisa played an electric piano, a violin and a mandolin. I was = standing right at the front next to Lisa's piano. I managed to take a = lot of photographs (with a decent SLR) so hopefully these will come out = well. Concentrating on Lisa's input, she contributed to nearly all the = songs, singing on about 2/3 of them. As far as I can recollect, she = played three of her own compositions; "Tom, Dick & Harry", & "If I think = of Love" - from "Slush", and "We Suck" - from "Love Circus" - this was = the highlight for me. Lisa looked to be in a pretty happy mood, laughing = and joking with the other band members. All in all a very worthwhile = gig, with excellent, seemingly effortless performances from all = concerned. Roll on the next LP. PS if you don't have Katell Keineg's two CD's "O'Seasons O'Castles" and = "Jet", then shame on you, and get out and buy them now.
