[Last updated on: Sun Jul 27 14:40:38 2008] "Please have a seat . . ." Welcome to the Richard Shindell Discussion List. First things first: save this message and keep it in a safe place. You never know when you'll need some of the Important Information contained herein. Now, onto some questions we're sure you're asking yourself: 1. Where the heck am I? We just told you. The Richard Shindell Discussion List. 2. Um, OK. What's it about? Um, Richard Shindell. It's a place where fans of this tremendously talented singer/songwriter can come to discuss his music, lyrics, concerts, career, musical pals, etc. 3. Excellent. How do I post a message to the list? Here's how it works: Just send it to . . . shindell-list@smoe.org . . . and everyone on the list will receive the message. 4. How can I read other people's messages? Well, in one of two ways, depending on whether you're subscribed to the regular list or the digest version. If you're on the regular list, you'll get the messages sent to you as individual emails, shortly after they've been written and sent. If you're on the digest version, you'll get a whole bunch of posts sent as one combined message, when a certain size quota has been reached. Most people opt for the digest version, but your mileage may vary. You can, of course, subscribe to both, so you'll get both regular mail AND an easy way to archive and save the messages for easy-reference purposes. 5. Can I read archives anywhere else? Absolutely. All Shindell-list posts from the beginning of time can be accessed at: http://www.smoe.org/lists/shindell-list/ 6. OK, I think I'm getting it now. Tell me about signing up for the different versions. Well, since you're already here, we'll assume you've already subscribed. But just in case you haven't, or need to swap between regular and digest, or are sending this to a friend, here's what to do. To subscribe to the regular list, send an email message to . . . majordomo@smoe.org . . . and in the body of the message, write: subscribe shindell-list If you want the digest version, use the same address, except the message in the body should read: subscribe shindell-list-digest 7. If I've subscribed to the list from one email account, can I also post messages from other email accounts I may have? Sorry, no. In order to block spam and other junk mail, we've got the list set up so that it will only accept messages from the email account from which you originally subscribed. There's no reason, though, that you can't subscribe from multiple email accounts if you so choose. 8. Not that this would ever happen in a million years, but how do I unsubscribe? If you DO need/want to unsubscribe, send one of the following messages (depending on what version you're unsubbing from) in the body of an email to: majordomo@smoe.org unsubscribe shindell-list unsubscribe shindell-list-digest If you're not going to have access to your email for an extended period (vacation, summer break, computer out for repair, etc.), you might want to consider temporarily unsubscribing so that your mailbox doesn't fill up, causing your Shindell-list mail to bounce, making the nice folks at smoe.org very sad. You can always catch up via the archives. 9. Any rules on the list? Not really. But there are some generally accepted codes of netiquette we ask that you keep in mind. A. Try to stay more-or-less on-topic; this IS, after all, a list about Richard Shindell B. Please send personal messages via private email C. Flames Are Bad . . . just look what happened in the Mann Gulch in August '49 D. Don't quote entire messages (or worse, attach the entire previous day's digest) when you want to reply to them -- just cut and paste the parts to which you're replying E. Don't send attachments to the list F. Turn off the HTML encoding and please send your messages in plain text G. Don't use the words "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" in your messages -- your post will bounce H. If your sig line is longer than the actual content of your message, you're probably going to Hell 10. Who runs this joint, anyway? Pay no attention to the people behind the curtain. But if you DO need to contact an Actual Human (and we use that term loosely) about an administrative issue, you can write to Ron Greitzer (Rongrittz@aol.com) or Sally Green (sally.heaven@gmail.com). 11. Does Richard have a web site? Yes, at http://www.richardshindell.com. It's complete with Richard's up-to-date tour schedule, an FAQ section, a link to guitar chord transcriptions, and much more. 12. OK, this seems like a nice enough place. Anything else? Nope, that's about it. Are you happy now? We're happy to have you!
