Just wondering which songs are grabbing people (those who have it already) after the first few listens. For me, it's: Parasol Sweet the Sting The Power of Orange Knickers Goodbye Pisces The Beekeeper Sleeps with Butterflies And these haven't hooked me yet, but they just might: Toast Ribbons Undone (sorta) Ireland Mother Revolution Hoochie Woman (for the fun factor) I don't think there's anything on the cd that I *hate*, except for maybe "Witness." Mostly there are just a lot of songs that don't necessarily grab me...but I guess with 19 songs, we can't complain if even half of them aren't the best. And I haven't paid much attention to the words yet, so this is all based on sound. - -Lisa - ----------- sunday afternoon there was laughter in the air everybody had a kite and they were flying everywhere and all the trouble went away and it wasn't just a dream all the trouble went away and it wasn't just a dream ~Patty Griffin, "Kite" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 09:59:30 -0500 From: ALaro22912@aol.com Subject: RE: Beekeeper Well for me.. I love Parasol, and Barons of Suburbia..Sweet the Sting, Ribbons Undone and Sleeps with Butterflies also grab me.. Barons of Suburbia is the only song that really gives off a powerful feeling to me, that feeling she projects when she plays live... Goodbye PIsces however doesnt do much for me.. I like all of Tori's songs, but lets just say this song is very low on the totem pole for me... Overall this album gives off a subdued, tame, mature feel to me.. and it also grows on you after every listen.. just my two cents.. :) anne ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 10:13:27 -0800 (PST) From: Jennifer Mitts Subject: Richard and Tori coincidences I am behind on my precious things reading, and just read Richard's post in which he mentions all the funny coincidences, meeting people who've been in school with Tori, etc., how it seems like lots of people have Tori stories in his area. I gotta say, that is like living in East Tennessee and everybody having a Dolly Parton story. Just about everyone I've met over the age of 50 who is FROM the area has personal Dolly stories. *grin* Toodles, jen Yahoo! I don't particularly understand the constant decision to release these special editions in easy to tear/bend/destroy packaging that rarely, if ever, fits a conventional CD holder. I had the paper version of venus (i don't remember why I chose it), and ended up throwing the case away when my girlfriend gave me her jewel case of it. I thought the box for scarlet was horrid., and while I haven't unwrapped the celophane yet, I'm not impressed with the packaging of beekeeper. It would be just as easy to use a dual-CD jewel case (like the jewel version of venus), and affix the extra stuff (ie the seeds) to the back of the case before putting the celophane wrap on it. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 14:21:25 -0500 From: jeff albertson Subject: tori / atlanta on ticketmaster thanks to ty for this notice! - ----- Forwarded message from Ty Barrett ----- Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 13:48:54 -0500 From: Ty Barrett To: report@torithoughts.org Subject: atlanta tickets the atlanta show is up on ticketmaster now: http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0E003A56B1D5BD31?brand=&artistid=749136&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=60 Tori Amos Symphony Hall Atlanta, Atlanta, GA Mon, Apr 4, 2005 08:00 PM Onsale to General Public: Sat, 02/26/05 10:00 AM US $42.50 Price $42.50 Ticket Limit There is a 10 ticket limit per customer. I watched the DVD first, so I got to hear Garlands first. THAT, I tells ya, was one LOVELY song. kinda long but hey d'ya hear me complaining? :) it's beauuuutiful. I love Parasol quite a bit upon the first listen. no specifics I can speak of yet. Sweet The Sting sounded groovy and boy does she use the organ on that one. I really was thrown off by Damien's voice on The Power of Orange Knickers, so that may take me a while to grow on. Jamaica Inn, though, sounds pretty spiffy. Barons of Suburbia's opening riff kinda reminds me of the opening riff in Precious Things. anyone else notice this? the rhythm of it more than anything. and the rhythm of the song overall feels a little like Carbon too, but a lot less manic than Carbon is, if that makes sense. up until now, I'd only heard Sleeps With Butterflies on her two TV appearances, and I thought it sounded very pretty. listening to it now, of course, well.. I have the same general feeling for it--it's VERY beautiful. and the description that the Billboard writer gave of laying on a hammock on a spring afternoon, etc, seems to *really* fit the song very well. General Joy doesn't jump out at me too much, but I can definitely enjoy it. I love the drumming work on it, especially. a lot of these songs feel light and airy, for lack of a better description, which makes me think of spring and stuff.. which is pretty nice. Mother Revolution kinda strikes me as one of those songs that you listen to while you lay around in the grass of your backyard. it feels light, fluffy, and a lot like a lazy day. has anyone watched the part of the DVD where Tori talked about Ribbons Undone, her daughter and her mother and so on? I thought it was kind of sad, but also very hopeful, especially when put into context with this song. I *adored* the way Tori explained how this song came to her.. very intriguing and, especially talking about being a car and letting him polish her rims, use the gear stick and so on, sorta sexy. I think I'll enjoy this one quite a bit. Witness sounds very gripping and moving, especially with the organ going all over the place like it does.. I especially like the part where the tempo changes and the focus shifts to the piano. very good break in the song. Original Sinsuality seems a little too short, but definitely very beautiful.. it's a little too short for me to give it anything of a proper review. does anyone notice a kind of reggae-ish feel to Ireland? it seems faint, but I definitely kinda hear that kind of a groove in the beat. the song overall makes me think of taking a few hours of the day to go somewhere.. probably Ireland. heh heh! The Beekeeper has a very very (to me) strangely ambient/new-age/trip-hop/atmospheric feel to it, especially in the beginning with the way the music kinda chimes and drones and so on. (I listen to a LOT of that "new agey" trip-hop type of stuff on my Launch radio, which is why I say that.) this one is definitely going to be a favorite, especially with the haunting feeling it gives me. I think this is the only song that doesn't strike me as "light and airy". I like the opening on Martha's Foolish Ginger quite a bit. kinda feels a little like a military march--the drums, anyway.. sorta like Josephine. but definitely not the same, mood-wise, as Josephine. as far as Hoochie Woman goes.. the first that popped into my head was "yum.. sultry!". not quite as sultry as I imagined it to be in my head, but it definitely does the trick, especially with the low notes she hits on the piano. I really dig that. Goodbye Pisces makes me think of sitting in a boat while the ocean waves kick you around just enough to make the ride a little like a roller coaster without exactly being life-threatening--ya know, dangerous, but not THAT dangerous. very, VERY beautiful. Marys of the Sea makes me think, on the other hand, of being stuck in the house during a big storm (think of hail and lots of thunder and lightning) even to the point of a power outage, but making the best of it. Toast feels a little nostalgic to me. at least musically speaking. it also kinda makes me think of breakfast on a cold morning.. the breakfast bit probably comes from Toast being the title.. but it does make me think of a cold morning, relaxing on the couch in warm flannel pajamas and fluffy slippers with a few loved ones nearby doing the same thing. all in all, I think this is one album that I'd not feel reluctant to play in front of my grandmother (who once got onto me for listening to music that was "way too depressing").
