I think the b-side for most artists has been dead for a long time. Only the UK single scene has kept that practice alive really, most artists are content for you to never hear their less-than-greatest songs that didn't make the album. If anything, most b-sides for the last few years have been simply remixes that end up on a remix compilation anyway, or live tracks that are mostly pointless. I'm hoping that iTunes changes a bit of that, or nudges things in the direction of "hey, put your crap songs on itunes, and charge a buck each for them and your real fans will pay for 'em in far greater numbers than ever bought both of your UK chart singles!". Tori would probably do well to haul in some extra cash here or there if the scarlet's walk b-sides showed up there, don't you think? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2003 08:10:46 -0500 From: fingerpuppets Subject: tori in the uk - promotion press release for those who don't visit it regularly, warner music has sent mikewhy a press release about the promotional events planned in the uk to push the release of _tales of a librarian_. from the dent : For immediate release November 10, 2003 THOUGHTS OF A LIBRARIAN A MUSICALLY PUNCTUATED CONVERSATION WITH TORI AMOS MODERATED BY LUCY O'BRIEN TUESDAY NOVEMBER 18, 2003 @ 2000 SHAW THEATRE, EUSTON ROAD, LONDON NW1 Tori Amos will host a unique event at the Shaw Theatre in London on Tuesday November 18 to mark the launch of her first ever compilation, Tales Of A Librarian, which will be released through eastwest/Atlantic Records on November 17. The Thoughts Of A Librarian event is a musically punctuated conversation with Tori Amos, moderated by the author and music journalist Lucy O'Brien. There are a very limited number of tickets available for this event. Tickets are limited to two per personal application at the Shaw Theatre and will go on sale at 10:00 on the morning of the event. Tickets are priced #17.50 each (cash only). At the time of purchase, ticket buyers will receive wristbands that will be exchanged for tickets on entry to the Shaw Theatre. Other events to mark the UK release of Tales Of A Librarian include an appearance at Borders on Oxford Street, London, on Wednesday November 19 at 1830, when Tori Amos will sign copies of the new album. On Monday November 17, Amos will appear on the Channel 4 TV show 'V Graham Norton'. And from Monday November 10, the free download-only single 'Mary' is available from www.toriamos.com and other selected websites. 'Mary' is a newly recorded version of an early B-side. The album, Tales Of A Librarian, which Amos describes as a musical autobiography, was produced by Amos and includes songs chosen by the artist from her celebrated eastwest/Atlantic career. A limited edition version of Tales Of A Librarian features a bonus DVD. Tales Of A Librarian features 20 songs that document a career spanning over a decade, among them 'Precious Things', 'Playboy Mommy', 'Spark', 'God', 'Cornflake Girl', 'Winter', 'Tear In Your Hand', 'Professional Widow', 'Crucify' and 'Silent All These Years'. Amos has personally revisited and 'reconditioned' the original material, re-tooling the multi-track recordings to offer a new perspective on some of her most beloved songs. In addition, Tales Of A Librarian will include a pair of brand-new songs - 'Angels' and 'Snow Cherries From France' - as well as newly recorded renditions of two rare early B-sides, 'Mary' and 'Sweet Dreams'. As sequenced by Amos, the songs - which Amos has always considered to be her children - form a unique personal narrative and a breathtaking view of an extraordinary body of work. Unquestionably one of the most acclaimed and influential artists of the modern era, Tori Amos first captured the world's attention in 1992 with her classic solo debut, the multi-platinum certified Little Earthquakes. Each consecutive collection of Amos material that followed has been certified platinum or better - Under The Pink (1994), Boys For Pele (1996), from the choirgirl hotel (1998), to venus and back (1999), and Strange Little Girls (2001). Oh, absolutely. I've been hoping for that for awhile. I even emailed a couple of contacts at Epic to suggest exactly that, back when the iTunes Music Store first opened. Will it bring b-sides back? That's an interesting question. The iTunes-exclusive tracks that have shown up there may have been b-sides if the singles market hadn't died out. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2003 14:24:12 -0500 From: fingerpuppets Subject: Re: Tori at London's Shaw Theatre November 18 one time at band camp, David Mobley (dmobley@fastmail.fm) said: >Only the UK single scene has kept that practice alive really, most >artists are content for you to never hear their less-than-greatest >songs that didn't make the album. on the other side of the coin, the length of compact discs -- roughly twice as long as a vinyl record -- means that songs which once would have been relegated to b-side status are now album tracks. i think tori fell victim to that to a certain extent on pele. it was her first record to be nearly as long as compact disc technology allowed and, while i don't think any of the songs on it are fluff, i know many people have made the claim that they are. however, i do feel that was her first album where the b-sides weren't as good as the album tracks. on the other hand, scarlet is longer than pele and the b-sides are clearly album-worthy. >I'm hoping that iTunes changes a bit of that, or nudges things in the >direction of "hey, put your crap songs on itunes, and charge a buck >each for them and your real fans will pay for 'em in far greater >numbers than ever bought both of your UK chart singles!". i dunno. i have a hard time paying for compressed music. it would be nice to see more stuff readily available but i think digital downloads are too ephemeral for purchase. i guess itunes and its ilk are a proven way to make that happen though so maybe i'll just have to swallow my distate and go with the flow on this one. >Tori would probably do well to haul in some extra cash here or there >if the scarlet's walk b-sides showed up there, don't you think? certainly couldn't hurt. woj ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2003 14:33:06 -0500 From: fingerpuppets Subject: itunes one time at band camp, David Mobley (dmobley@fastmail.fm) said: >I'm hoping that iTunes changes a bit of that, or nudges things in the speaking of itunes, has that second song which the newsring was going on about been posted yet? I thought the same originally, but I've since purchased some songs from the iTunes Music Store. I like it for single songs, where I'm willing to pay a buck for something, but I don't want to buy the whole album. I have a few one-hit wonders hanging around on my iPod now. ;) /nm ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2003 17:42:53 -0500 From: David Mobley Subject: Re: itunes Tuesday, November 11, 2003, 2:33:06 PM, you wrote: f> speaking of itunes, has that second song which the newsring http://www2.fanscape.com/toriamos/newsring2/newsringhome.html > was f> going on about been posted yet? They do appear to have posted this week's stuff, and I think they only update once a week on Tuesdays to mirror new store releases. Then again, I didn't get the new releases email this week yet, so they may yet have more things to add, so I'll keep my eyes open later tonight... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2003 20:26:48 EST From: ToriVolta@aol.com Subject: Singers and Singles Not too sure if any of you are fans of Pearl Jam, or fans enough to go out and buy their record, but they recently came out with a 2-disc CD that is only b-sides. It also has the two songs off of that CD for Kosovo that Tori put 'Merman' on. I think they are remakes of 'Last Kiss' and 'Soldier of Love'. I unfortunately can't remember the title of the CD right now. And they also released a live DVD, as well, which the name also vanished. This goes to show that some bands do release b-sides still. It only took them 12 years to do it. Peace Out, Amanda ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V8 #257 *************************************
