I am seeing Howie in Portland this weekend...I am looking foward to seeing him and Charlotte (never heard of her either, but I listened to some samples of her EP at Amazon & she does sound similar to Tori). I'll let you guys know what I think. What's more likely? That an all-powerful mysterious god created the universe and then decided not to give any proof of his existence? Or, that he simply doesn't exist at all? And that we created him so that we wouldn't have to feel so small and alone. -Eleanor Arroway, Contact ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2003 01:42:26 -0400 From: David Mobley Subject: Ben Folds on iTunes playlist Okay, this might be old news for the mac kids.. But Ben Folds's "Celebrity Playist" on the itunes store (which is now available for the rest of the world finally) has a Tori track (Pretty Good Year) where he says about it "I was on tour with tori this year and i never heard her play it once, so I donwloaded it backstage so I could hear it". I thought it was funny. And Michael Stipe's playlist has Winter in it too. Maybe everyone has Tori, I dunno. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2003 15:36:17 EDT From: AnotherPilot@aol.com Subject: Charlotte Martin (was Re: Fw: howie day review in NYTimes mentions tori...) I'll let you guys know what I think. I was fortunate enough to see Charlotte Martin perform in Philly at both of Howie's shows. She is really amazing and I would highly recommend her music to any and all Tori fans. For some people she may remind them *too* much of Tori but I absolutely adored her. She has an EP out titled "In Parenthesis" that is available at most places that sell music. It's only like $5-6 and it's totally worth it. Everything the New York Times article states about her is true. Even if you have never seen her live before she will definitley grab you attention. Her lyrics aren't nearly as poetic/"cryptic" as Tori's but they still are very much speaking from the heart and she performs with as much showmanship and emotion as Tori does. The "I'm Normal...Please Date Me" song reminds me a lot of a less complicated version of "Leather." At the Philly shows she also did a partly a capella version of "Wild Horses" that blew me away. She did a version of "Black Hole Sun" on the second night that reminded me a lot of how Tori reinterpreted "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Anyways...blah, blah, blah, blah...She is great. Go listen to her. If you don't want to buy the EP you can download free songs of hers from charlottemartin.com and click on the "see/hear" link. Like I said, it is worth it. Enjoy. When I started listening to the cure cover I thought it was "mother." "Something Like a Hero" is "Little Earthquakes" smooshed with "Cloudbusting," of course IMHO, and only in style, content is different. >Anyways...blah, blah, blah, blah...She is great. Who cares? I haven't been able to download a song yet, even though I'm trying, due to computer screw-ups. But some things that struck me as too similar were the 5 pictures on the see/hear page. Open up the 3rd picture from the left, and she is wearing an emerald ring on her middle finger. This ring looks very similar to Tori's that she almost always wears on her middle finger, as well. Then to take it a silly step further, look at the word trees and yes, some of her writing could be interpreted as lines of Tori's from various songs. I didn't do any research, if that is what it seems like. LOL This is what I took in a matter of minutes, just by scanning. Anyway, that is my two cents worth. Charlotte's going to be up against that with Tori, and it's a shame. The least said about the ring comment, the better. It's definitely coincidence! For the record, Charlotte is a huge Kate Bush fan (She's covered "This Woman's Work" in concert, for example) but knows comparatively little of Tori - she once covered Never Seen Blue, but this was as a favour to a fan and she learned it specifically for that show. Anyway, if people want to hear more than just the samples, there's some full live shows to download, I particularly recommend the one at http://webdev.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=6492 But if you *really* want to make Tori comparisons, get me a copy of Charlotte's first album, "Mystery, Magic & Seeds" - there's probably even fewer copies out there than Y Kant Tori Read. ;) There's a small but friendly fan community at http://www.charlotteteam.com/phpBB2/ and I've got a fan-site at www.silverhoney.co.uk - complete with pictures of Charlotte clutching a Kate Bush video. ;) Mike ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V8 #237 *************************************
