It may have gotten worse around then--surely the tea and ginger situations would exacerbate it and she was first hitting the tea in '98, I believe-- but I'll quote from my own review of the 21 August 1996 Charlotte concert, as available on the Dent: http://thedent.com/touraug.html#charlotte It's always lovely to hear Past the Mission in concert, and this night's rendering was especially delicate and moving. Gorgeous. As was Little Earthquakes, in which a stream of drool slipped out of her mouth toward the end of the long, continuous vocal part where she can't control it and keep it in her mouth. She's clearly made the decision to go for musical purity over sanitary behavior, as surely to interrupt her long vocal phrasing would not give us the shifting canvas for vocal expression she wants in such instances. I expect she's somewhat embarrassed when it happens, but I agree that not that many people notice the drool, whereas all of us benefit from the musical decision to arrange to have those long, seamless vocal passages. There's some pretty intense stuff coming out of her mouth on the video of the 20 October 1996 Ft. Meyers, Florida concert, too. One has to wonder how much her piano tech needs to clean that stuff out from the keys. She's spoken in a couple interviews about doing her best to let it casually run out the side of her mouth that's away from the audience; clearly, though, sometimes it's more conspicuous than others. But it's not like attending a Gallagher show or something, where the people in the front rows know he's gonna be smashing melons with sledgehammers and they bring clear plastic sheets and wear raincoats. :-D It seems usually to just dribble out of her mouth and down. I happen to have a screen capture from that Ft. Meyers video: . The white steak coming down under the tip of the microphone and continuing underneath her arms is a live gob in motion. Also note the visible lower portion of the triangular projection screen behind her and the Virgin Mary night light someone gave her sitting on the piano. Just another day at the office in Toriville. Do Fiona fans have conversations like this one? I doubt it. > There are some TV appearances from around this time where you can > clearly see it. (Once was on Regis & Kathie Lee, and I think it really > freaked them out). Yeah, that one was a riot. She let some fly right at the end, tried to act nonchalant about it and hoped people wouldn't notice, but she knew she was caught and looked directly into the camera as if to say, "Uh-oh" as she casually touched her chin to the mic to let it run down it. Here's a funny quote: CNN Online September 29, 1999 http://www.yessaid.com/interviews/99-09-29CNNOnline.html CNN: As far your end of the tour goes, were you eager to be back on the road with a full band? Amos: Wanting to play with these guys again was really a burning desire. I enjoyed playing with them (on the last tour). That's not to say there weren't rough spots. Because I have to play and sing at the same time, when you play alone, you cheat a lot. You can stretch bars and stuff. But when you're having to hit the marks as a player as well as a singer, you try to drool, find your note, breathe and wiggle, all at the same time. And not lose your lunch. That's a tall order for me. Happy breakfast everyone. ;-) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. Few people think more than two or three times a year. I've made an international reputation for myself by thinking once or twice a week. --George Bernard Shaw, writer, Nobel laureate (1856-1950) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Aug 2003 07:28:21 -0700 From: Violet Subject: Re: Drooling in Concert >Violet said: > >> She seemed to start drooling around the time of Choirgirl. > >It may have gotten worse around then--surely the tea and ginger situations >would exacerbate it and she was first hitting the tea in '98, I believe-- >but I'll quote from my own review of the 21 August 1996 Charlotte concert, >as available on the Dent: There I go again, confusing Pele & Choirgirl again, as I so often do. It was around *B4P* that people started noticing the profuse drooling. In fact, IIRC, the song she drooled through during R & KL was one that she was playing on the harmonium. So, my bad. Tori Soundstage show. After checking this link (I forget who provided it - props to you!!!) http://www.pbs.org/wttw/soundstage/merch.htm I called this phone number 1-800-237-1100 and was told by the very helpful Dana that they are TAKING ORDERS for the Tori Amos Soundstage show!!! She told me that they were taking credit card numbers and names, but not charging anything to the cards yet, in anticipation of the production being made available soon. This is not a guarantee that it will be officially released, but she seemed to indicate that this was a very good sign. YEAH!!!!! The cost would be $24.95, INCLUDING SHIPPING via UPS (no PO Boxes...). ($19.95 + $5.00 shipping) Of course I love the whole networking thingy of these lists (especially Tori-Boot!!!), but it's been my understanding that something comercially available should be sourced officially, right? Goddess Nadyne, please correct me if I'm wrong on that... Anyway, it's public television after all, your money would go toward MORE Soundstage shows and the like, and hey, I'm pretty sure those guys have the equipment to make a perfect copy for us all. I didn't ask about VHS, but it's one of the options when you call the 800 number. So there you have it, let's all NAIL PBS AND DANA WITH ORDERS TODAY so they know we're a force to be reckoned with! 1-800-237-1100 Have fun kiddies!
