They are nice but none really touched me enough to vote. Anyone from the group a finalist? Anyone send one in and think they should have been? I'm a bit disappointed with Tori's statement. It's like this was a big chore and not alot of thanks to the real Tori fans who sent videos. Yes, I sent a video and while I did not expect to be a finalist, I did expect some generic reply by mail saying thanks. I didn't have any problem seeing all the videos on www.toriamos.com -- from home on a cable connection. I had been wondering if this was only accessible for fans with high-speed connections (which wouldn't be fair, but it might be life), but if you couldn't access from work at Apple, then I doubt this is the case. I voted and was only able to vote once. I figured that, too, was due to being on a high-speed connection with a static IP address. (I wasn't intending to vote over and over ... I just wanted to see if they blocked me from voting more than once during the voting period or each day, or whatever -- as "evidence" that the results wouldn't be too skewed by cheaters later. I was happy I couldn't vote again, but it appears I may have been misled into thinking the voting process wasn't rigged somehow.) I can't see them today on www.toriamos.com, though. Apparently, voting is completed and so they've taken them down. Richard Handal's non-toriamos.com links still work, and I can see each of the videos that way today. I voted for the entry by B. Deveau, by the way. I thought not only that it looked like something Tori would have done, but that it was the one that *most* looked (to me) like something she would have done. The main character was dressed similar to Tori, and they made use of the "being in a box" illusion Tori has used as well. Mainly, though, the video's interpretation of the song didn't match specifically with the words to the song (not a single taxi image in this video!), and that's something I've seen again and again in Tori's videos. She seems to consistently offer a different perspective in the video than what you might immediately imagine from listening to the song, and I like that because I think it gives us all "permission" to view the meaning of her songs in our own way and more imaginatively. Perhaps I should also mention that this was the only video that brought tears to my eyes. My very high second favorite was Ming Wang's version (I *love* how she had the characters holding pictures where they were singing along -- and especially that in the first of these, to go with "On days like this you know who your friends are," that the character was holding up a picture of only herself -- I've had those days, too, where I felt the only person I could trust was myself -- I wouldn't wish such a day on anyone, but I suppose we've all had them), followed by the Brian Hamm version (the image of the wine glass breaking and wine splashing against the mirror was simply gorgeous), and then by Lee McCaulla's version (the only cartoon in the bunch). I really didn't care for any of the others, and the Susan Herbert and John Quigley versions would have tied my vote for "too lame to even be in the contest" (people getting in and out of taxies, and that's about it .. what's so creative about that in the context of the song?). So, was anyone else able to see them? What were your thoughts? Toxic Witch *** Put that in your cauldron and bubble it ... *** Don't play with fire ... Relax with wax! "if that's what it takes to sail you > home." those are great, Odyssey-like lyrics. Count me in as amazed too. 1000 Oceans is brilliant. I love it. Coincidentally, I made a 1000 Oceans desktop wallpaper just the other day. I was riding in the passenger seat of a car goofing around with my iBook when I came across an mpeg of Tori performing 1000 Oceans on Conan, 14 October 1999. So, I played it, did five captures, and tossed them together. It's not perfect--it was damn hard to see what I was doing because the sun was really pouring in through the windshield. For what it's worth, it's on my wallpaper page: http://www.well.com/~btanaka/tori/wallpaper/ It's the second to last one. - -- - - Brian Tanaka - - LiveLists: http://livelists.dyndns.org - - Thunder Wishes, Fire Thought: http://www.well.com/~btanaka/tori ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jul 2003 18:31:18 -0700 From: Brian K Tanaka Subject: Re: TAXIVISION On Sat, Jul 12, 2003 at 05:59:00AM -0700, lou fauxbel boldly wrote: > .. > Yes, I sent a video and while I did not expect to be > a finalist, I did expect some generic reply by mail > saying thanks. I just did a quick search on LiveLists for these boots. Every one except Ithaca 98 appear on many people's lists. I bet you can find several people who have all four and will do a B&P there. Ithaca 98 appears on only one list, but it belongs to someone I trust, so that looks on the level to me. Oh, and in case you didn't know, it looks like there's a cd AND a vcd of Philadelphia 10/13/01. The LiveLists URL is in my sig.
