Written at 3:00 in the morning.. my experience. :) I am *extremely* exhausted as I write this.. it's been a very long day full of emotional highs.. and plus it's 3 in the morning right now. We got at the venue at around 1:00 central time.. we circled around to check and see where the meet-and-greet people were gonna be, found 'em, my mom dropped me off, and then found a really good parking place.. so I hung around with the crowd, chatting and talking with everybody, etc.. killed a few hours without realizing where all the time had gone.. and we got rained on a little bit too--which kinda kept Tori from standing outside with everybody for longer than she did.. Well anyway, at around 3:30 or 4:00, Tori came out. I made a copy of my Hey Jupiter video (using footage from the orig. video as well as other footage of her that I've got..) to give to her--and stuck my letter in an envelope with the tape in its own box the night before.. Anyway, Tori came out and said hello to everybody.. She got to me and I handed her the box and explained that it was a music video that I made for her.. *SHE* took it from me, not her bodyguard.. and then while I could, I asked her if she could play part of Datura for me (she didn't--I'm fine with it.) and she nodded (not a "yeah. I'll play it" nod, but a "I heard you and I'll at least consider it" nod.) and then she asked me if this was my only show and I told her that I'd seen her in Atlanta and told her about how I felt when she played Hey Jupiter at the end of the show.. and then somewhere in between that, I told her that when she smiles, she reminded me of my mother (and I made sure to say to her that THAT was indeed, a Good Thing.).. and she smiled and told me thanks.. I took LOTS of pictures of all this btw.. (I'll get them developed VERY soon) and then she was kinda moving to other ppl sorta.. and I asked her how her daughter was doing and she smiled real big again and said "She's doing fine" and thanked me for asking.. I took more pictures, told her she looked great (actually, that was the first thing I said.), told her good luck, told her we all loved her, etc.. and then she left and I went "Bye, Tori!" and she said bye to us all too. Oh... it was.. I still can't get over it. I knew to expect it because I've read things from so many other people who've met her saying the same thing, BUT.. when you're talking to her.. she doesn't just nod and go "uh huh" while signing other autographs and basically just ignoring you.. she stares right into your eyes and PAYS ATTENTION.. and it totally makes you feel like the most important person in her world at that moment--as if she thought you were giving her some crucial life-or-death information. Just her looking straight at me and not just putzing around with other crap while I was talking to her, that was enough to make me ecstatic. I wasn't close enough for a hug or a picture together or an autograph, but she got my video and she listened to me tell her stuff and she heard my request for a song (movement 2 of Datura).. and.. I told my mom about it and she was as happy as I was about it. It was bloody amazing! In between all that, I made a couple of friends who had an extra ticket (which was LOTS better in terms of seating arrangement..) and they gave it to me--for free.. so I gave my craptastic seat to my mother.. (she was willing to go see Tori) and.. that's as important to me as meeting Tori was.. because I wanted my mom to see Tori's performance for herself.. AND SHE DID! She had bad seats, but she got to see Tori.. and she didn't much care for all of the music (too many minor chords she said..) but she got to see just how talented Tori was and she told me that she LOVES Tori's voice.. she said Tori's got a BEAUTIFUL voice.. and she also thought that she had a really cute personality about her.. and that she loved how Tori would be dancing all over her seat and then she'd cross her leg while she played, etc.. it was really awesome.. The show itself was really REALLY good.. The highlight of it (for me) was when she sang Crucify.. it was truly beautiful. She closed the show with Playboy Mommy (because we were in Birmingham and she mentions Birmingham--altho she means Birm. England so I understand..) and we were all walking out of it more or less awestruck. I can't say the same for the opening act.. It wasn't Howie Day this time. :( It was some other guy.. I've forgotten his name already. He had a pretty good singing voice, but.. all of his songs sounded the same to me--and if *I* say that about somebody, then you know that's a pretty bad thing since I tend to have an ear for little easily-overlooked qualities in a song that makes it different. I was actually kinda disappointed in him and wished that it'd been Howie--so that my mom coulda seen just how good he (Howie of course) is. ANYWAY.. that more or less sums up my day. It was a BLAST! I would do it again in a second. It was incredible. ABSOLUTELY incredible.. but now I must go to bed. I can't keep my eyes open for much longer. >___< Sincerely, Cyndi S. Do. Not. Describe. Myself." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Feb 2003 13:52:01 -0500 From: myth@31flavours.com Subject: Birmingham review I posted this somewhere else, but woj is asking so here is my two cents: *note: references to past shows are all shows in Atlanta Oh my god. This was the best Tori show I have ever seen. I'm not a tour groupie or anything, so I've only seen a handful...one from each tour starting in '98. The '98 show I saw had a fantastic setlist, but we weren't close at all. The '99 tour was what it was. We had 7th row, but it was an outdoor venue with crappy metal folding chairs and the crowd stood thru the whole show, and people were really disrespectful. The '00 tour we had good front row balcony seats, but Tori's performance was uninspired. And last fall we had great seats at the Civic Ctr, and the performance was really good. But this one took the cake right away. First, we had 10th row, and there was no pit like at the Civic Ctr so it was true 10th row. And we were closer to the stage than even the '99 7th row seats were. We were also almost dead center. Just slightly to the left enough so I could see Tori's hands on the piano. So the view was amazing, I could easily see her facial expressions and her entire body right down to her boots. The sound in the BJCC was fantastic...they've gotten the bass rolled off finally, and you could hear the piano, even during the band parts. There were no obnoxious screamers around us. There were a bunch toward the rear of the floor...People!...shut the fuck up!...stop shrieking like someone is killing you...stop yelling "Tori I love you!" every 5 seconds! Some people in front and further to the side got up and down all the damn show. They didn't cross my line of sight, but it was still slightly distracting and I'm glad I wasn't in their row. I swear to god one girl got up over half a dozen times. Why? I just don't get it. I'd have stomped her foot when she went by, if I'd been in her row. Ha. Anyway. The opening guy was okay...nice voice...obviously having a good time. He had some fans in the crowd and you could tell he was pleased. I'm not much of one for the solo singing-guitar strummy stuff, but he was acceptable. I didn't track how long he played, but I think it was about 10 songs. We waited for Tori. Then the lights dropped and Wampum Prayer played. I had a view into the backstage and could see Tash running around in a long pink dress, with some adults running after her. It was cute. Finally the curtain dropped and the show began. You can of course get the setlist at The Dent, if you haven't seen it already. She was in good form. Her voice sounded clear and strong. As I said, you could hear both her and the piano well. Most of you know what the stage looks like, and the lighting and stuff, so I won't go into that except to say I wish they'd stop shining lights into the audience and blinding us, it's really annoying. The first part of the show was fairly straightforward, and almost contemplative. I didn't mind hearing Little Amsterdam again, and was thrilled with Honey, it was a stunning performance of it. And there was Sweet Sangria [No Vegas, sadly, I was hoping once again]. The solo material was beautiful. Before she did Here, There and Everywhere she said something about [paraphrasing] "five years ago I danced with someone to this song" and smiled sweetly. I didn't know what she meant until I checked the reviews today, I hadn't realized yesterday was her wedding anniversary. It was lovely and she seemed a bit misty after it was over. The band came back, and the real fun began. She did Horses, which I just adore. This marked a definite turning point in the energy of the show. It was like she'd gotten her wind during the solo set or something. Every song after this right up to Tear in your Hand was powerful, and she was getting into it - flinging her hair and body around like the old days. Rattlesnakes was great, one of the 3 songs off that album that I like. Then it really kicked in: Space Dog - Juarez [yay!] - Take to the Sky - these three were solid energy, she was pounding them out and they were tight. Then we dropped back to catch our breath with ICSNY...stunning, I love this song, I don't care if she is doing it every show, it was magical. And then, hell yeah! iieee! This came roaring back with all the energy, I was so happy she played this one and it was amazing, the highlight of the whole show for me. They left for the encore break, and then Jon and Matt returned and began thumping out the intro to the next song...I recognized it from the bassline alone! Talula! Yay! This one stayed strong and was followed by a beautiful powerful Tear in your Hand. I heard Tear at the show in the fall, but I love it live and it was possibly even better this time. Then another encore break, and they came back for Crucify and Playboy Mommy. Crucify is okay, the chorus parts with the piano are good, but the verses are too drawn out for my taste and she doesn't play during them, so, snooze. But that's just me I guess. Playboy Mommy was very good and got a big crowd reaction on the "from here to Birmingham I got a few friends" line, as would be expected. And then it was over. I had expected 3 song encores, but it looks like they are just 2 songs each this time around. And she didn't play Leather! Haha, I think I've had to hear it every show I've been to. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Feb 2003 11:24:42 -0800 (PST) From: diana Subject: Re: the Tori Amos concert (Feb 22, 2003) Hey Cyndi, Thanks for the lovely review. Well, I didn't pay attention to everything, but most of it appears the same as on the first leg. I'm pretty sure I saw all the same tshirts, and there were also one or two new shirts - I got one with 2nd leg tour dates on it. Tees are $35 still. There were some tank tops that might have been a little cheaper. The tour program was the same - it's $20 or $25. There are postcards and necklaces and that stupid overpriced hat. I saw hoodies and I *think* a new sweatshirt or hoodie type of thing [don't quote me on that one being new] and those are $60 or $65 or whatever retarded price they were on the first leg. I saw a poster too, but didn't note the price. Essentially, all the merchandise is rather overpriced. They were taking credit cards tho. ;) .................................................................... .: go then, there are other worlds than this :. http://glasseye.theultramind.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Feb 2003 18:03:31 -0500 From: noam tchotchke Subject: Re: tour merchandise one time at band camp, myth@31flavours.com said: >saw all the same tshirts, and there were also one or two >new shirts - I got one with 2nd leg tour dates on it. I won't tell you guys about and just let you see for yourself, it shocked me a little bit, the girl that I was with got it. I wanted to write to tell you guys that I'm not sure who wrote that they were accepting credit cards, which I'm sure was true at some shows, they only took cash at the Jacksonville show. I just wanted to tell everyone that so you went to the concert prepared. I think they also had a new poster on this leg of the tour and I think a new tank top in two different colors that said "piano love". I think most of the rest was the same stuff as the last leg though.
