Of course I can vouch for the fact that every year is pretty much a good cover year for Joni, but this year is really pulling high-profile folks out of the woodwork. We all know that kd loves Joni and I can't wait to hear her version of Jericho - hot diggity! I love the fact that everyone seems to be putting TWO Joni covers on their releases...double the pleasure, double the fun. Thanks for the news, Bryan!! Bob NP: Todd Rundgren, "Happy Anniversary" (am I the only one here that is digging this exciting new one from the Toddster? It's a 'concept' album that examines lies and our culture...the cover shows Todd dressed up as the Easter Bunny and his premise is that we're told so many lies as a child that we become immune to them and become liars ourselves. I don't know if he was inspired by the current administration or not.) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 2004 13:37:07 +0200 From: Claud9 Subject: Re: LOGO CONTEST!!!!!!!!! Maybe, just maybe............ Her between song patter was very political, exhorting the crowd to vote during the upcoming midterm elections, saying "Who cares who got a blow job in the White House?" and doing a great cover of Neil Young's "Rockin in the Free World." Let me add the "Land" anthology to the recommendations--lots of good stuff including more rarities & prviously unreleased stuff than is usual for such projects. If you can get "Dream of Life" used for 4 bucks as I did, you won't be too disappointed, but I'd say it's not the place to begin for post-Wave Patti. How to get back to Joni? well--? Did anyone read the article Les posted today? Anyone know of the status of these projects? Some busy listening ahead Richard:-) I try not to buy too many albums togehter. If i'm particularly absorbed in one, the others may not get the attention they warrant. On the other hand, it can be great when, months or even years later, you listen to these albums again and realise that you actually love them afterall (this happened with Turbulent Indigo). I'm most intrigued about Loretta now, i may add her to that ever expanding list! Was that a New Years show at the Bowery richardm? Richard is right Em, the later stuff really is good. They are very different from her earlier albums which may be why some people dislike them when coming to them now - it is not Patti Smith Group mark two. A lot of the dynamics have changed, and their is a much more explicit political ideology coming through, although, imo, even this is consistent with the ideals Patti Smith put forth in her most drug fuelled days. That said, the most essential ingredients are still there; Patti's lyrics, her voice (which has matured "real well"), Lenny's guitar, Jay Dee's drums, the passion, the power to move through sheer sound or through touching intimacy (noise and peace - to rearrange one of her album titles). Gung Ho would be, by far, my favourite of her later albums. But the other two fill in some very important gaps and have some wonderful moments. Let's not forget Dream of Life, her 80s album. Some of the die-hard early fans hate this, completely, utterly. I find it to be a superior pop album. I love it. Perhaps it doesn't feel like that Horses woman, but it's worth the investment (and it's usually on sale pretty cheap). It's not that her "edge" is gone, it's that it has shifted focus. Maybe i should say "get the new one", but i haven't heard it yet. I know i will like it from what i have heard, mind you. Well i seem to have missed some link here. Was there details of this deal? I've heard things like this before. As long as i've been on this list there has been talk of memoirs. Were they actually listed on amazon or am i mixing that up? I would love to see this happen, but is Joni really up for it? Joni's poetry - i'm not sure how good that would be. It could be great, but if she had anything to say wouldn't she be writing songs? An art book - would that be a presentation of her own art? A JM art coffee table book! I would surely invest in that, but would prefer to pay for Joni writing about other people's art. What is she up to these days? Lounging around in the sun? Painting? Playing with her grandchild? is there more than one grandchild? i assume she is not making any public appearences (charity events, benefits etc) as we don't hear anything about this, i may be wrong. I saw her on Letterman sing a Bluesy song in rather casual clothes it was OK and just recently Mary Chapin Carpenter was on dressed rather casual but singing a beautifull song. Its helps you to focus on the lyric's when you do not have a Jessica Simpson type half dressed jumping around the stage yelling something you can not understand. Probably the most enjoyable show I've been to bar none. I've seen Dylan and Joni in concert but Sarah knocked me out. I was not expecting too much after seeing her on the Degeneres show where she put on a kind of lack luster performance and I had seen her live at a radio taping last month where she was good but but in concert she was in her element. She played a lot of her older music which she seems more comfortable with. Unpretentious, friendly and if you like her music damned talented. I had talked to someone on the list a while back and we both kind of agreed her guitar playing was just so-so. Have to say after seeing her in concert I was dead wrong. Extremely competent comes to mind. Plays fairly complicated stuff while singing. If you like her stuff and ever get a chance see her. You know, the Sunday magazine that comes with your newspaper's comics. Anyway, tonight I read the following in last week's edition, on Page 5 of the cover story: "The Tigris and Euphrates merge today in the abject town of Qurnah. This confluence is recent, after a 1954 flood redirected the Euphrates. On the banks is a tiny park about the size of an outdoor basketball court. It contains a shrine to Abraham, a few trees, lots of concrete and no grass. Joni Mitchell was right: They paved Paradise."
