Subject: RE: OT/OAC: Sheryl Crow Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 00:00:40 -0400 I was at the Virgin Megastore at midnight on September 11th to buy "Love And Theft" as soon as it went on sale and bought the European release of The Strokes' "Is This It" at the same time. When I got a chance to listen to it a few days later, I have to say I did feel a bit uncomfortable listening to the song "New York City Cops". That said, under normal, non-terrorist situations I have absolutely no faith in either the competence or integrity of the NYPD and feel that their recording of the song was not only justified, but necessary. Bad situations can't change if people aren't allowed to speak out about them and I've become very perturbed with the current popular attitude of repressing individual opinions in favor of "solidarity". The freedom to disagree and to speak one's opinion is one of the great things about our country and right now this aspect of our way of life is in as much jeopardy as any other. The Mannlist is a community of people from all over the world brought together by the fact that they are Aimee Mann fans and I don't believe that one person among us, moderator or not, has the right to be the sole judge of what is or isn't an acceptable topic of discussion. The time that all of spend reading and posting messages is time that we have chosen to devote to this community, and I don't think anything that any one of us feels is important to share with the rest of the group should be considered invalid. To all Mannlisters: I am aware that many Mannlist postings since the WTC incident have been off subject and/or inflammatory. I did not intervene because (1) most of these incidents usually wear themselves out over two or three days and (2) a large number of members were connected to persons in NYC and I wanted to keep this forum open for them to express their anger/sorrow/whatever. But now it's time to get back on track with respect to the subject matter of this list: Aimee Mann and company. At the risk of being called a censor, I am setting Mannlist to moderated mode for a while. "A while" will be a length of time to be determined, depending on how posters behave. Please, please, please, drop the non-music-related things and talk about Aimee and company, as well as non-Aimee music things. To put it more directly, any messages that aren't reasonably related to Aimee or music in general will not be allowed onto the listserver. I do agree that whatever Jon Brion touches is graced with gold (or should we say platinum quality), however it seems that after 2 albums with Jon at the producer wheel maybe it was simply not Aimee's choice to have him produce. I was able to talk to Eleni Mandell when she was up in Seattle, and I asked her about going from Jon Brion producing her first album "Wishbone" to Brian Kehew producing her second one, "Thrill" ; her response was, "Yes, it was nice to get away from all the very produced organ sounds." Please understand, Im not saying that I agreed with her, in fact I expected her to say something to the opposite affect, such as "Yes, I really did miss having Jon on this one, but he was tied up with other obligations...." So, it shocked me when she said it was her decision to not go with Jon. Add to that Rufus Wainwright's second album "Poses" when compared with his first self titled debut, I personally prefer the newer one which Jon did not produce. Fiona Apple's 2nd album however is great and Jon was behind that one. Ive seen what Jon can do when coupled with a talent like Fiona Apple and Aimee Mann. (The guitar solo in the Wallflowers One Headlight, Eel's, Jonatha Brooke, and the list goes on) like Mary Lou Lord once said, "He goes off and does something that everyone is thinking what's he doing?" and then when he adds it to the song, its really brilliant. So, while I agree that I personally enjoy hearing Jon's solos and added flourishes, I do know that artists collaborating are about more than just the magic of the recording, but like a band, it's about how personalities get along. Sometimes it just nice to change it up a bit and see what you get. Just to clarify, Im not disagreeing with anyone that it would be nice to have Jon back producing (I love anything he touches) but I dont know if getting Aimee a list of a thousand signatures is going to do anything. I trust her judgement completely. And just to avoid any flames here, remember this is simply one opinion which belongs to me. To: .mannlist@lists.cc.utexas.edu. Frank, Oh my goodness, who is Mary Lou Lord? Great question and here's what I can personally tell you. (Someone please correct me if I get the facts wrong) Mary Lou Lord first hit the scene associated with the Kill Rock Stars Olympia WA label. She released a cd called "Mary Lou Lord, Kill Rock Stars" (where Juliana Hatfield sang backup vocals) . It was mostly acoustic really folky sounding. She continued to release smaller EP five song things, like "Martian Saints" where she covered songs by Nick Soloman of the Bevis Frond, Pete Droge and Elliot Smith. (I recommend that EP for a taste of MLL). In 1998 she was picked up by the Sony WORK label and released "Got No Shadow" which Jon Brion plays on. Whats amazing about Mary Lou is that she first picked up a guitar busking in the Boston subway stations. She was friends with Shawn Colvin (before she got really popular) and made it her personal goal to have the public know who Shawn Colvin was since she knew Shawn was an amazing songwriter. The really humorous thing is that AFTER Mary Lou was signed to the huge Work label, she continued and continues to play the subway. She says it keeps her in touch with the people and a smile there is a real reaction, and so on. Mary Lou is just super nice, really down to earth, and is the kind of girl who remembers you even if you met her briefly. I can basically say she is a friend because she is that sincere a person and we hang out when she comes to Seattle. She is now really into Rockabilly because she and Kevin Patey from the Raging Teens have a little girl name Annabelle. (The Raging Teens are an amazing band to see also) Hope that helps. You should really give Mary Lou Lord a listen, you may end up busking on the street! Hi Guys, .. . Ummm.... Who's Mary Lou Lord? I keep seeing her name associated with .. Lisa Loeb and Sam Phillips, so I feel like I . should know, but I .. definitely don't. .. .. ..Mary Lou Lord is from the Olympia, WA area on the Kill Rock Stars label. ..I would associate her more with ..Shawn Colvin, who is her hero. She was rumored to have had a fling with ..Kurt Cobain, and Courtney Love ..and Mary Lou had a war of words years back about it. I listen a lot to ..CBC Radio, and was introduced to ..her music by David Wisdom, one of the great DJ's of all time! You can find her there, almost any day .of the week busking on the street, because for now, that's what she is. .It's something I've always wanted to do was go to Boston and here her .play. Sigur Rós are an Icelandic ambient/art-rock type band. They're the biggest thing in Iceland right now. I do not know how to pronounce their name. To: mannlist@lists.cc.utexas.edu I have to go along with Elion on this one. I didn't see a lot of inflamatory messages posted, and it's not exactly like Aimee is particulary active right now. The WTC, Pentagon and Pa. events are probably the most significant news stories of our lives. It would not have hurt anyone to allow Mannlisters to express their feelings and emotions, and God knows in the past the Mannlist has gotten off topic on issues far more trivial without causing the list to be set to the moderated mode. Subject: Re: OT: Tori, Ben Folds and other stuff I'm listening to To: mannlist@lists.cc.utexas.edu I thought I'd chime in on "the stuff I'm listening to" thread even though I kind of feel alienated by music lately. The only album that I've gotten this year that really makes me happy over and over again is Depeche Mode's "Exciter". I think Dave Gahan's voice is the epitome of coolness. Speaking of cool, Everything But the Girl's "Back to Mine" is a super chillout CD with a great mix of tunes from artists as diverse as Beth Orton, Slick Rick, Donnie Hathaway, and the Roots. But I'm into chillout stuff a lot lately...mostly mood and atomosphere and as few lyrics as possible...I got the new Orbital CD last week and its very good with a cool cameo by David Gray on one track and Tool on another...Here's the rest of the stuff I've been listening to... Prince - Sign of the Times Til Tuesday - Voices Carry (pulled it out of the closet after a number of years..still sounds cheezy but in a good way..it IS Aimee anyhow) Badly Drawn Boy - Hour of Bewilderbeast Marvin Gaye - What's Going On Le Tigre Stevie Nicks - Trouble in Shangri La (I had forgotten how much I love her voice) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 18:31:17 -0700 (PDT) From: Kristina Wilcox .aimeenellysarah@yahoo.com.
