I had always thought that she was saying that one day he'd wake up and say "..my God I should have told her...." (she pauses in that thought to imagine what that would take) then she continues with what he would be saying...."but now here I am and teh world's gotten colder. And she's got the river down which I sold her". I took it as that was what her ex was saying (although, true....there are no pronouns) but that that phrase wasn't what Aimee was saying, she was just quoting in the song. Anyway.....what I still don't understand how she was "sold down the river"....I wouldn't consider that a normal breakup type issue. I guess I could be wrong. I just thought that it must be a big part of the thought behind the song since it's part of the chorus. Not to stir up old debates, but considering her track record of relationships and her bitterness when they are ended.....I never would think for a minute that she might be bi. Between the fairly well publicized ones she had with men, how would she find the time?! LOL "....Maybe that's just how I am, to fall where I stand or I'm weak for that kind of man...."
