Fripp was along as "Dusty Roads" and sat on a stool off stage, but but was visible from my seat. Television was the opening act. EC & the Attractions - just after This Year's Model came out. I think one of the 2-Tone bands opened. FZ & the Mothers - the Underwood & Underwood band. All instrumental, except for Montana. The Kinks and Cheap Trick - no idea if The Kinks had a new album, but it was just after In Color was released. CT threw what seemed like a few thousand round stickers into the audience. XTC - Black Sea era, in support of some band that went on to sell a zillion records. Obviously too short, but they were a good live band. King Crimson - double trio on Halloween night. The California Guitar Trio opened. The famous show at which some goof tossed an object that bounced off of Fripp's head while the band was taking a bow. RH & the Egyptians - Respect tour, I think. The one that the Live Death promo came from. Neil Finn - Try Whistling This tour - the band was in top form and played for a couple of hours. One of those shows that produces a one week high. - - Steve __________ Never underestimate the power of a Dark Clown! - Darph Bobo http://www.trippingtherift.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 19:22:39 -1000 From: "R. Other great shows: Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper/The Pogues/The Violent Femmes (1989?) - Typically soused up Pogues were very entertaining, though not at their best musically. Violent Femmes played a solid set that sounded almost exactly like their recordings. Replacements - Colby College 1989 - We got a very tight set from them - we had heard rumors that they were drinking heavily all day, so we thought it would be one of their legendary, er, not very tight sets. I remember nearly crying when Paul sang "Unsatisfied." I'll forgive him any less than stellar solo albums just for that performance. (BTW - "Indian Summer" from 14 Songs is decent) Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe - Brown College - 1988 - this was the solo Spectacular Spinning Songbook show. Loved it - highlight was "Pump it Up" played solo by him with a beat box morphing into a cover of "Sign of the Times" by Prince. Nick joined him for "What's so Funny 'bout Peace, Love and Understanding." Saw the two of them again at Colby the next year supporting Spike - he was still touring "solo," but had replaced the songbook with a giant heart with the new Seven Deadly Sins. Strange man, Costello. David Bowie 1990 (Foxboro) - This was allegedly his "last time I play these greatest hits live" tour. His voice was giving out, but he played nearly three hours. He couldn't his the high note ("break down and cry") in Young Americans, but covered for it with some much appreciated theatrics. Two highlights - He came onstage and said "Good evening, Cleveland... Foxboro... Adrian, play me out of this..." (said to Adrian Belew - we think Bowie was fooling around, but it was a nice "Spinal Tap-y" moment). Also, on the way out, a vendor was yelling "Get your Bowie dogs here." I shudder to think about it to this day. Belew and Bowie singing 'Pretty Pink Rose' was a highlight. The Bobs - Somewhere in a little bar in New York. If you don't know why the Bobs are the greatest vocal band ever, I can't really describe what a treat the show was. Highlight: Janie Bob singing "He Parks the Car at Valentinos." Ah, memories. I hope these prove to be more accurate than my last set. R.
