I searched the web for interviews and stuff that Jewel said on the meaning of 0304 and I listed some of what I found below and at the bottom of this is a link to an audio clip of an interview where you hear Jewel talk about the meaning of 0304, it's actually kinda funny (http://stream.streamaudio.com/WBLI_FM/jewel03.asf) here's the articles I found: http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/women/story/0,4395,204413,00.html <> http://www.smoe.org/lists/jewel/archives/v08.n176 (Jewel digest archives) < Subject: RE: [EDA] Jewel on local radio >> I can't believe she said the 0304 = CD thing! She must have some insider here. << If I recall correctly, the one that said it was "0304 = CD" (C being the third letter of the alpphabet, D being the fourth) was Larry Greenfield, who is in fact a part of Jewel's legal team. Plus, there are other members of her team that are still on the list and/or read it at the online archives at smoe.org/lists from time to time. Mike >> I found an interview on Pieces of UK, with Jewel and some DJ's from 106.1 that you can listen to here: http://stream.streamaudio.com/WBLI_FM/jewel03.asf Below I typed out the interview: DJ - "I hate to ask the clichi question, but I cant figure out, what is 0304? Jewel - "It's actually really simple, um, I was looking for, I like using numbers instead of words so that it wouldn't give away sort of what the record is about, you know what I mean? You didn't call the record 'whispers' (whispers) you know what I mean, that's kind of what you'd expect from the music, you know what I mean? Um, but... fans have been speculating about it and like breaking into numerical code that 3 means C and 4 is D so they think I called my record CD or March 4th so people are coming up with these really creative solutions so I'm just letting it fly and I'm gonna be ambiguous about it until I hear a really smart one then I'll adopt it, (laughs). DJ - "So you really have no reason for calling it 0304?" Jewel - "Nah there is one, it's really simple... "But you're not gonna tell us.." Jewel - "But I'm not gonna tell..." That's all I'm gonna post for this because there is A LOT of stuff out there on the web that talks about her telling what 0304 means. Some of it's the same some of it's different. I think I even heard her on Carson's show explain what 0304 meant. *whew* is that enough info? or you want more? Other Jewel albums may as well have gotten stuck in my CD player and I wouldn't have cared (of course we haven't had to worry about that since CDs basically took over and we stopped using cassette tapes as out primary media). To be honest, I think that I listened to Joy more in the first few months of release than I have 0304. I couldn't stop listening to This Way - and Spirit was hard to stop listening to, let alone Pieces of You. But, 0304 has just fallen flat. Ultimately I think that we may look back in ten years and say "WHAT was THAT?!?!" If this is the direction that Jewel wants to continue in and it's with her heart and not album sales in mind then I can support that. But, the songs as a whole just aren't as meaningful as they were prior to this album. I can't really imagine that now that the excitement of having a new album is over, that too many of us go to the Jewel section of our CD collection and choose 0304 instead of another disc on a regular basis. Personally I'm hoping that the word that the next album is going to be acoustic is still true. Really, I'm more likely to pull out a favorite live show than a CD release most of the time - but when I do, it's not commonly 0304. I'm going to give Jewel the benefit of the doubt and assume that she'll find a way to dazzle us like she has in the past and I'm going to look forward to 0304 hopefully finding its way into obscurity. Here's hoping, Dave ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V8 #456 ***************************
