Three months after breaking a collarbone and a rib at her rodeo-star boyfriend Ty Murray's ranch near Stephenville, Jewel seemed in fine form. The only sign that something was amiss came when the 27-year-old singer, who was backed by a five-piece band, announced that she wouldn't be playing much guitar. "I'm such a good dancer, you won't really miss it," she said, laughing. She didn't dance. Instead, she stood relatively still and made theatrical, Celine Dion- style hand and body motions - apparently to amplify the emotion of each of her middle-of-the-road pop-rock songs. Jewel is known for taking herself a bit too seriously, and it's stuff like walking away from the microphone after performing I Won't Walk Away that gives her that reputation of pretentiousness. Looking tan and fit in a cutoff T-shirt and snug jeans, Jewel sounded fine, both elegantly whispery, as on her hit Hands, and intentionally gruff, as on Standing Still, one of several songs she played from her latest disc, This Way, which hasn't sold nearly as well as past efforts. She introduced the title track of the new record with a joke that hinted of fading-star desperation. "There's a radio station here tonight," she said. "Call them and request this, and maybe they'll play it between Shakira and Eminem." The standing-ovation moment came during Till We Run Out of Road, a new song she wrote with Murray. For those few minutes, she truly sang her guts out, and her performance seemed genuine and heartfelt. He does seem to bring out the best in her. DON'T call your favorite station if it's known for playing Britney and Jay-Z. They WON'T have it. Think more Celine Dion, Sheryl Crow, Goo Goo Dolls.. Light stuff. Scott is really making ti sound like This Way is BOMBING. It's not doing that bad, but we do need to pick up the momentum if we want it to continue to rise. It has been gaining spins everyday since its release on July 1st. It did fall of the top movers list for one day, then re-entered at the bottom, it has since moved up to #14. There are at least 20 stations playing it, I'm not to sure of the eact number. Santa Rosa, CA is playing it the most at 35 spins this week. This Way is still doing ok, it hasn't started to loose spins, but it looks as though it might turn in that direction if we don't all keep calling and requesting it online ONCE A DAY EVERY DAY. I guess I'll just have to blame Rob for grilling such great steaks - or maybe it was Melanie's delicious Spinach Dip? - - It couldn't possibly be my own fault for eating and drinking too much - never! :-) Most everyone went home more or less intact - Only a couple bandaged EDA's - so next year we may have to ban Abel from tossing the Football and Eric from Tubing ;-) (Did anyone else notice that Eric was the common denominator in both instances ;-) Friday's thunderstorms sent many of us scurrying for cover and others to find dryers after it was all over. I may have to seriously consider a second dining canopy for next year, just in case.... I think the only person who ended up making it horseback riding was Kelly on Sunday morning. I decided it was a bit too muddy for horseback riding on Saturday myself - I wasn't ready for more wet and muddy.... A few of us did take it easy on the Lake Beach, which was a nice relaxing couple of hours :-) Others either went into Woodstock or went Tubing during that time :-) Unfortunately we found out later that another camp group at the same campgrounds lost one of theirs in a Kayaking accident :-( We counted our blessings that it wasn't anyone in our own group.... I determined later around the campfire that maybe I should keep Dennis away from my husband as they rolled around on the ground behind us and that yet others should be cut off much sooner.... But we won't name names ;-) Sunday was filled mostly with packing up, getting breakfast, and then, for us and a few others, a last minute trip into Woodstock :-) So that's it for my scattered ramblings on the weekend - hopefully others will send more coherent recaps :-) Hope to see everyone again next year, and many of you sooner!!!! It's on the Top Movers list, but that doesn't really mean anything because it's playing on so many stations, yet it's not on the most increased number of spins list, and hasn't been for over a week. It's not even getting 70 more spins around the country than last week, and that's pretty pathetic, especially for Jewel's Hot AC standards. The point is, request EVERY DAY. Theresa Cano azcentral.com July 23, 2002 11:31:32 b" >Click here to see a slideshow of the Jewel concert Singer-songwriter Jewel seemed dead set to prove one thing on Tuesday night--shebs not your typical pop star. A packed Dodge Theater seemed appreciative of the fact that while Jewel has had a good-sized handful of radio hits and platinum albums to boot, what they love about the singer is her uniqueness. Her voice, her songwriting, her story are not even close to resembling the typical cookie-cutter pop starbs life. The Alaskan-native was especially chatty throughout the night, spending a good chunk of time talking about the state of music today. "I took two years off of touring to sharpen my songwriting skills, but knowing what I do now, I should have spent that time learning dance routines," she said. Later in the night she encouraged fans to visit, soulcitycafe.com, a site the singer along with her mother created as a means for "fans of singer-songwriters to get to good music before it gets generic," she said. Jewel's rise to fame story is one of the best in the business. Born to free-living, open-minded parents in Alaska, the singer spent much of her childhood and adolecence moving around, singing in coffeeshops and festivals. This later proved to be a great training ground for her when she finally broke into the mainstream. Her angelic voice soared to the upper rafters during a solo set. Jewel hit notes that pierced through the hearts of her fans while singing such lovesick tunes as "Near You Always" and "You Were Meant For Me." While the latter was arguably one of the most overplayed tunes of the mid-nineties, it sounded fresh as the day it hit the airwaves, mainly due to the singerbs ability to dig deep into her soul and pull each note and lyric out in a new way. The set list featured a healthy portion of songs from Jewel's latest release, This Way. "Jesus Loves You," "Serve the Ego" and "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone" helped to make this album the singerbs most musically daring effort yet. While the band was stellar, the showbs high point came when they left the stage to the singer and her guitar. Playing only a small portion of the show with her six-string strapped on, thanks to an April horse riding accident, the crowd savored every note Jewel plucked as she sang her heartfelt, confessional songs. Even older tunes such as "Little Sister" and "Morning Song" played like new ones. The absence of her guitar did make for a feeling of stiffness during the beginning of the show, but after the solo set, Jewel and her band seemed to loosen up completely.Jewel's breakthrough hit, "Who Will Save Your Soul" was given a total makeover with lyrics delivered in a scat-like manner, while the normally folk-heavy song was reworked into a funky gospel-like number thanks to the talented fingers of bassist T-Bone Hannon. Jewel mentioned that when she first heard "Who Will Save Your Soul" on the radio, it was on a stationbs daily top ten countdown, nestled between Soundgarden and Nirvana. Nowadays, she said, "I'd be right between Shakira and Eminem." But Jewelbs talent as a singer/songwriter has helped to keep her fans wanting more, even when many of her contemporaries have faded into One hit wonderland on VH1b&Joan Osbourne anyone?A relatively reserved crowd was brought to its feet when the singer said "This isnbt church, youbre allowed to get up and dance." And fans did just that as they rushed the stage, arms raised and clapping in time to the down and dirty Southern beat of "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone." Security members failed to ward off energized fans who remained huddled close to the stage until the end of the show. The show ended with a two-song encore. First up was the haunting yet gorgeous, "Foolish Games," followed by the bluesy, Nina Simone song "The Other Woman," both of which showcased the richness and wide range of Jewelbs voice.Hopefully the next time the singer comes to town, shebll be back to one hundred percent and will be able to play more guitar, but that's not to say that Tuesday nightbs show was anything less than amazing. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #348 ***************************
