Just wanted to comment on the World Premiere of Down So Long on Total Request Live on MTV, today, which I'm sure will domintate the next 3 or 4 digests. Anyway, it sort of reminded me of the movie Twister, with those dark, rural backgrounds. Like the calm before the storm. Personally, I believe it to be her most creative video yet, stylisticly. Very raw. And as always, she dressed very wonderfully, and very in tune with the video and the song. I applaud this latest effort, and hope Spirit has more in store. - -Salinger99, The Philosopher Angel P.S. Was Steve Poltz the guitar player on Jewel's left or on Jewel's right? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Mar 1999 16:28:04 -0800 From: "K.J. & A. MacPhee" Subject: DSL video WOW! Now that's something that I wanted to see. At first, I thought that it looked a bit similar to "Hands", but as soon as it jumped to them perfoming, I knew that I was going to like this video! Jewel needs to do more performance videos. Off the top of my head, the last one that I can think of, was (her first?) WWSYS, and that, in it's self, wasn't really performing. As to Jewel's appearance: Stunning, as always, but especially in the number right at the beginning of the video. My overall opinion much better that "Hands", and do you think it is possible for Steve to stay in one place for five minutes? It was awesome. I think I figured out the Jewel/change thing. She was different than most artists and that's why I loved her, and then she changed and she was the same, and that was different. I did like it though... Now for the reason for this... Did anyone catch what was written on the Drums? As much as I absolutely LOVE Jewel, I must say I was a bit disappointed when I saw it. It lacked creativity and reminded me just a little too much of her You Were Meant For Me video. Being one of the panalists for the "Down So Long Write-Jewel's-Video Contest" a few months ago, I must say I saw a lot more creativity and work go into some of those scripts than what I've seen in the finished product. Personally I think they just should have spent a little more time piecing it together rather than just "whipping" it up. Of course it comes back to the commercialization....they wanna make as much money as possible so they're gonna be throwing the singles to the public as fast as they can handle 'em. If they learned ANYTHING from past experience it should have been to "savor" the taste of something as wonderful as Jewel puts out. Pieces of You sold into the millions.............. because it was around for a lon gtime. SPIRIT should follow in the same footsteps... but probably won't. Oh well. It lacked the creativity and/or storyline that her other video's posessed. At the this moment I think I like Hands video more, but that could soon change after I see it a couple more times. The last scenes with the snow were incredible and I loved the use of color in it and of course Steve. I am so happy he is getting all this recognition. I have. I think it's pretty cool, but I don't get all the dark imagry. I thought Down so Long was a song about things changing for the better, so I was expecting it to be a little bit cheerier. I may be wrong about the song's meaning. Steve Poltz is in the video-he plays backup guitar. He's the guy on the left(in case you haven't figured that out already).
