Greenfield" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 17:15:53 -0800 From: "Larry S. Greenfield" Subject: Steve Poltz's Livingroom Tour Hi, all! Since posting about Steve's awesome show at The Roxy on Monday night, I've been getting a lot of messages from people wanting to know the details about Steve's upcoming Livingroom Tour. Here's what I know: At each table at the Roxy, there were 2 copies of a very slick full-color flier printed by Mercury Records, announcing the Release of "One Left Shoe" and describing the record. The final paragraph of this flier reads, verbatim: Steve's touring after album release will involve two nights in each market: One night for a coffeehouse performance and the second for a performance in someone's living room. This "Living Room Tour" will be done in conjunction with Jewel's fan club known as "Everyday Angels." After the show, I was speaking with Steve's manager, Bob Duffey, who asked me to help coordinate this Livingroom Tour, which I gladly agreed to do. He told me that he is leaving town for a short while, but he will call me with Steve's itinerary as soon as he gets back. I expect to hear from him any day. As soon as I know what the tour dates and places are, I'll post them to both the Rugs' list and to the EDAs. Based on the LRT experiences to date and the feedback so far, I know this will be a huge success. The San Diego singer-songwriter -- whose debut album, "Pieces of You," has yielded three top-10 singles and sold more than 7 million copies -- performed the anthem at Qualcomm Stadium for a sold-out crowd of more than 68,000 and a worldwide TV audience of 1 billion. Her supple, soaring voice rang out strong and clear, and was free of the showboating that has marred too many previous Super Bowl anthem performances by other artists. The Grammy Award-nominated singer was accompanied by a spare yet effective prerecorded backing track of acoustic guitar, cello and muted trumpet, which she arranged herself. The audience gave the 23-year-old star a loud ovation both before and after her performance. "I just went for simplicity," said Jewel, in a post-anthem interview in her dressing room. "I would have felt silly if I'd done too many loop-de-loops, because it's not my show. And I wanted it to be elegant." While even veteran singers like Tony Bennett have commented on the technical challenges of singing the anthem, Jewel did not encounter any difficulties. "Maybe it's harder for a guy's voice," she said. "I actually enjoyed it. I like what my voice did with the high notes, and I think it's also sexy -- the low notes." Jewel's anthem performance marked her first local appearance of the year. In March she will begin filming in Missouri as the female lead in a Civil War drama with acclaimed director Ang Lee. "It's nice to be here in San Diego," said Jewel, whose mother, father and two brothers accompanied her to the game. "It's funny. I hadn't thought about singing the anthem, in terms of representing our country, and it is an honor. The Super Bowl is something you grow up with, and it's exciting to be here. When I got up to the microphone, I thought 'What's wrong with my heart?' Because it was really beating" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 22:18:11 -0500 (EST) From: Han Jin Ahn Subject: Doug Green's CD offer Hey y'all: Did anyone else take up Doug Green on his offer for a special Jewel CD for $10.65 back in December 1997? If yes, has anyone received it yet? Doug, if you're reading this, a response would be greatly appreciated...
