Jeff has been extraordinarily patient in asking that people's better judgement be their guide. Unfortunately when a list is as big as this one, some people on it lack the necessary respect for others and for this list. I liken this list to an on-line version of visiting a friend's house to discuss Jewel and life. I don't know how other lists deal with this sort of nonsense, but if a person or persons insist on being obnoxious or intentionally trying to upset or hurt others in the group then they're not really a friend (let alone an Angel) and they would no longer be welcome. It's up to us to look after each other and the list so that Jeff doesn't have to keep a house open for people to come in and destroy things (or, inevitably, to shut down the list because of a small number of abusers). If a few people continue to act like home-wreckers then they've got to be shown the door. The positive EDAs need to maintain the innocence and integrity of these lists for the good of all. Any other lists out there encounter similar problems? (It's like the Beacon Theater's worst elements put on-line -- there must be a way to curb this sort of rudeness.) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 1997 23:43:14 -0700 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: Re: ADMIN: musings from the management P.S. maybe abusers should get a warning and then if they repeat, they're banished from the list. Blockbuster has so far given away close to A MILLION tickets to Rockfest. The Texas Motor Speedway has a capacity of around 300,000. There is evidently a total of one two-lane road that leads to the park. This person was estimating lineups would run 6-7 hours. The words "nightmare", "helicopter" and "adventure" came up frequently in the conversation. It will be interesting to see how many ticketholders actually decide to go. Since tickets were essentially free, it's likely many will be wasted. Still, at this rate even a 30% turnout is capacity. There's a Country Fest at the same park the week before with an equally huge lineup of country artists, so results from that might be a good indication of how Rock fest will go. Just FYI... Just a few posts from some people who just want to make trouble because they think they're cool. Then, other people start replying and then more replies come and it just starts to expand. I'll be hauling Chris (The Crazy Cleophile) Moynihan and his magic guitar down to New Jersey, so we will most definitely be doing more Jewel Kareoke (tm) both nights! Also, you attendees make sure you bring extra blank cassettes, pre-dubs and some branch-level tapes to distribute as angelfood this weekend! And bring those sleeping bags so we can cover the floor with 'em to cushion the many EDA tushes... Don't forget your "roughing it" clothes for the EDA Paintball Wars on Sunday. Hey- I just received my copy of July's "Acoustic Guitar" magazine, and who should be on the cover...Jewel. I also think this is one of the best cover shots of her yet. She's strumming her "Big Blue" Ferrington guitar, in her van. There is also a short article on her, but nothing you haven't read before. They even screwed up on her name, Kircher, and they said she lived on an 8 acre homestead in Homer. Isn't it more like 800?! Anyway, they have a nice little article in the back on Jewel's "Big Blue" Ferrington guitar. They interview Mr.Ferrington on Jewel's inspiration for the guitar, very interesting. So everyone check it out! See 'ya! Mike "Strangers stopping strangers...just to shake their hands." But, that said, I know that if her music doesn't change, I won't be listening to it in two or three years. It would really help her to get a real band. Not just a backing band, but a band that she is only a part of, even if she isthe frontwoman. I say this because I know that most people don't want to hear five to ten POY follow-ups. If you're in a band, there can be influence and counterinfluence among the bandmembers. Imagine Jewel's voice providing (or receiving) backup to or from a fluteplayer, or a sax solo. I know she does this now, but not with a band that is on equal footing with her. A prime example of what I'm talking about is Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull singer/flutist/guitarist/you get the point). Ian and Martin Barre ARE Jethro Tull, but they have an everchanging group of bassists, keyboardists and drummers that all become PART of the band, not just backup musicians. Right now I'm imagining Jewel playing with a jazz pianist and jazz drummer, a punk bassist and a flute/sax player. Thus, every once in a while there's a jazz tune, or a ripping punk anthem, or a progrock song. That's just my opinion. Let me know if I'm the only one thinking that way. Most musicians do change over time - but do you mean that you'd no longer listen to POY? > It would really help her to get a real band. Not > just a backing band, but a band that she is only a part of, even if she > isthe frontwoman. I say this because I know that most people don't want to > hear five to ten POY follow-ups. I disagree. I don't think it would help her to become part of a band - although she's certainly shown herself capable of using a backup band to "rock-out" some tunes. As for what people want to hear - even I don't proclaim to know what the market wants, and that's my job, to know what people want :) I'll buy her next 5-10 albums because I enjoy her music, her lyrics, and her voice - in sum, her artistry, regardless of the sound behind it, is what attracts me and differentiates myself and many EDA's from the MTV-groupies who've jumped on the bandwagon (no dig, just truth) > If you're in a band, there can be > influence and counterinfluence among the bandmembers. I thikn that's the reason so many bands break up. Look, when you're in a band, your artistic vision CAN be strengthened, but it can also be diluted. A prime example of this is Indigo Girls - Amy and Emily were great as a duo for years, but their music has (IMHO) been diluted by the addition of 3 other musicians, who each have their own artistic voice to speak with. It changes, and yes, sometimes its a good change, but if you just wanted to hear Jewel, and not 'The Jewel-tations' ..... > A prime example of what I'm talking about is Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull > singer/flutist/guitarist/you get the point). Ian and Martin Barre ARE > Jethro Tull, but they have an everchanging group of bassists, keyboardists > and drummers that all become PART of the band, not just backup musicians. A counter-example would be "The Waterboys" - the only consistent member was Mike Scott, and everyone of their albums has a different sound, from 80's 'big rock' to folk to 90's alternative and back. Again, sometimes its good, and sometimes its not. - -Jeffrey- - -- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- jeffm@genghis.com http://luna.genghis.com/jeff/index.htm - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 May 1997 11:51:17 -0700 From: Tim Schoenberg Subject: JC: ATTN ALL IRVINE CA LILITH FAIR.. I just want to tell you that today is RAINN (Rape Abuse Incest National Network) day. As a result, about 800 radio stations have played Tori Amos' "Silent All These Years" as well as a message about RAINN from Tori herself at 12 Noon local time. Only four radio stations in the San Diego area have played this song (91X, 92.5 The Flash, Sets 102, and Q106). The video was aired on MTV and VH-1. I happened to see the video at 9AM on VH-1 since my cable company still carries the East coast feed. That's all I have to say. Thanks! We're down to about 70 booklets left. If you want one still, please get your orders in. You'll be happy to know that this project has already raised close to $900.00 toward the JPK Fund. Heres instructions again if you want to place an order: 70% of total EDA List sales of these booklets will be donated to the JPK Fund on behalf of Jewel & The EDA Foundation. :-) For more JPK Fund info go to: http://www.endor.org/jpk/ If you are Canadian, please contact: Gerry Lipnowski at: glipnows@qc.bell.ca If you are outside North America, please contact Terrence Williams at: thespis@thespis.com If you live in the USA or simply want to know more, read on: Hi to all USA EDAs that would like to aquire Jewel's "Tiny Lights Tour '97" booklets that were sold during Jewel's recent tour. These booklets contain poetry, writing, vintage & recent photos as well as info about the tour itself. They are 14 pages in length including front & back cover. They were designed by Jewel's assistant & close friend BiBi Bielat. Here's the instructions. Please follow them EXACTLY in order for this to be as easy as possible for us. If you want more than 5 of them, please use a Priority mailer--I can fit up to ten of them in there. Send your self adressed pre-postaged 9.5" x 13" manilla envelope, with $10 cash (or a $10 money order made out to Alan Bershaw) for each booklet ordered to: Jewel Tour Book c/o MrBB P.O. I will be sending Lenedra a bank check for all booklets ordered & if I cannot personally cash your money order, then I cannot send the booklet & must return your order. There's less than 70 left presently. I'll keep the list posted if it looks like they'll sell out to prevent having to return any requests. Remember, Amyjo & I volunteered to do this because so many EDAs requested it. Follow the simple instructions. I know this will be painless if you do. :-) Thanks!
