Some people DO need the obvious, life-affirming mesages put to a voice, and I really don't see what's wrong with it.. I applaud Jewel for trying to give out a message of positivity and optimism in an age where anything that's not underproduced and sounds like it's been dragged through mud isn't view as "cool" by cynical tightwads who think they have a right to put down people with a more positive outlook on life. Optimism should never be frowned upon or looked at with disgust. Most people aren't. I couldn't believe it when I read that they felt she had no sense of humor. I could name several songs that show a more humorous side. Cold Song, Race Car Driver, Rocker Girl, My Own Private God's Gift to Women, or Fish Family and Memoirs of a Housewife. She should make an album showing some of her other sides. Too many people thinks she's one-dimensional. I guess because most artists put fast and slow, serious and funny songs all on one album, while Jewel likes to maintain a theme. I think this shows that she's more of an artist, wanting things to go together. - -Kerri my homepage: We Are EveryDay Angels check out my angelfood page, there's a link from my main page "But don't wander too far, My one constant star, Darkness exists, except where you are, My feet are filled with wandering, They follow your own, 'Cause everywhere you are feels like home." -Jewel, Last Dance Rodeo ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 20:29:30 -0400 From: "32 flavors \(and then some\)" Subject: * Re: about the CDnow review I have to defend the reviewer against this point.. Hi Everyone, I recently discovered a little internet goldmine of music from Jewel's earlier days... Acoustic Cafe is a weekly radio show out of Ann Arbor, MI that is broadcast on various stations around the country. Jewel appeared on the show back in 1996 with Edwin McCain. Luckily for us, Acoustic Cafe posts links to some of their old shows. Here's how to find them: Go to http://gr.mlive.com/cafe, where you will see the featured artist of the week. Scroll to the bottom of the page to the 'Previous Featured Artists' section. Jewel has a link of her own and is also featured in the Fifth Anniversary Show. Both clips feature a duet with her and Edwin called 'Let Them In', a song by John Gorka, which is beautiful!! Besides Jewel, there are many other fabulous artists featured at Acoustic Cafe. Enjoy! This >show is the best songlist of any show I have but I dont know all the titles. >Also who does she bring up to sing on some songs? DeeAnne Hi to DeeAnne & anyone else interested in this show, I agree that this is a particularly good show & one of my personal favorites of 1996, a year which had it's share of amazing performances. I see it listed on many tape trade lists so I guess it's a very popular one & commonly circulating among tape collectors. This show was somewhat of a "sending off" party for Jewel who left the following morning to begin a solo acoustic US Tour. A lot of San Diego musician friends were there to cheer her on & it was a packed house at Java Joe's. Jewel was extremely adventurous with new material at this show & a lot of tunes were unveiled publicly for the first time at this gig, some to never surface again. A few of the new tunes (that are familiar now) had very different lyrics on these early versions. Oh, & the woman Jewel brings up during her break is Joy Eden Harrison, who did a couple of tunes, between Jewel's two sets. Here's the accurate setlist & relevant info: Java Joe's, Ocean Beach, San Diego, CA 1/11/96 1st set: 1000 Miles Away Walk Away You & I If This Is What Love Is I Hate Birthdays (often mislabelled as "Need An Excuse") Angel Needs A Ride Buttercup (first time) Fragile Heart (first time) Fading Away (first time) Now That You Have Me (first & only time) Things You Don't Say (first time) All The Animals Emily Love Me Just Leave Me Alone (early version several extra verses) Race Car Driver I Got The Blues More Than You Do Blues Jewel brings up Joy Eden Harrison for two songs** **Whiskey A Go Go **Goddamn Cowboy 2nd set: Little Sister Foolish Games Sometimes It Be That Way Cold Song A Boy Needs A Bike All By Myself (by request she tries it but gives up ...almost!) Unsung In Your Eyes (only time the full song has been performed live) Nikos Fat Boy Chime Bells Raven Quite a night! By the way, Jewel's home video "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" has some video footage included from this particular show. It's the footage where she's wearing a long black dress & the walls behind her look like green chalkboard with graffitti all over it. And since Joy Eden Harrison's name came up in all this, here's the updated info on her East Coast tour which begins in a few weeks. Living Room Concert's have been added! June 1: New Haven CT, Koffees w/Anne Heaton June 3: New York City, The Living Room w/ Anne Heaton June 4: North Hampton MA, Fire and Water w/Laura Wood June 9: Taunton MA, House Concert: contact: Dennis at Harrisbros@aol.com June 10: Montreal Canada, House Concert: contact Gerry_Lipnowski@hotmail.com June 16: Harrisonburg VA The Artful Dodger June 18 : Arlington VA Now! Music and Fashion record store in-store performance June 20: Scranton PA, WVIA-FM live in-studio performance with studio audience I encourage anyone in these areas to check out these shows. They're gonna be great! I'll be hopping on the tour for Joy's swing through New Haven, Northampton & the Taunton Living Room gig. Hope to see many of you there! Actually I'd just like to point out that it's not *Jewel* who decides what venues she plays etc. in fact, how could you expect her to know the size of every venue in the US, not to mention all over the world? It's her management firm that sets up all of her shows and decides where they are going to be. Most of the time, the venue decision is not based on the amount of seating (in regards to your comment that she doesn't sell out big places) but rather whoever put in the highest bid for her concert. And don't just chalk it up as Jewel being greedy for the money, her management firm gets a cut of the dough, as well as all the other people she has to pay; security, band members, etc. Besides the fact, that you can't call someone a sell out just because they *want* to play to a larger audience! I'm sure everyone would agree that Jewel wants nothing more than to send out a good message, and if she has to ability to send her message out to a wider range of people, she should tell advantage of it. I'm sure that you are not so critical of other celebrities who do it just for the money, but you have this facade of Jewel having to be this person who can only remain the same if she isin't quite so famous, or isin't in it so that her music can be heard but as many people in the world as possible. You've got to remember SHE'S HUMAN. She has the same wants and needs as any of us, and I'm sure all of you want and need money and recognition from time to time. The same goes for the television interviews: she's only human. She has bad days, she has days where she might not seem so "full of personality" and she probably has a lot more going on in her life than you actually know about, and maybe she's more concerned about that than how she appears on television. Oh, but that just shot your whole theory, because she's "sold out" right? She couldn't possibly be concerned with other things in her life....I guess this I did jump on you, but I made my point. She can't be what you want her to be all the time. She can't please everyone. She has feelings and wants and needs and a life, and if that makes you question your love for her or her music, than maybe you never got it in the first place. ~<3~ Sandy ~ Angeloflove@innocent.com ~ Angelicpoet@home.com ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V5 #143 ***************************
