I am a nearsighted, obsessive compulsive, asian male, with 15 years on this planet. I've been obsessed with Jewel for about 3 months, ever since I came home and saw her video on MTV. After I saw it a second time, I was hooked. My favorite bands include Primus, Foo Fighters, The Refreshments, and of course Jewel. I HATE just about any band from the 70s and 80s with hour long guitar solos (except for maybe Tom Petty). As far as instruments, I played bassoon for my middle school's symphonic band for about 2 and a half years, but didn't decide to continue playing because of the frustration that comes with playing a reed instrument (but there's a great amount of satisfaction when you hit that really low e flat just right). Right now I'm just starting to learn how to play bass guitar. I've only been on this list for about 2 weeks or so, but I already think this is the coolest mailing list I've ever been on. Will C. And since you mentioned Budweiser, we are yet one more step closer to figuring out from whence your aversion to alcohol is born... Marijuana is absolutely NOT addictive in itself. In combination with certain addiction-prone individuals, it most likely is; but for the overwhelming majority of the human race, it is not. This is very well documented scientifically, both by laboratory experiment and by user studies. I get high. My girlfriend does not. In fact, she doesn't drink a drop, either. And we get along fine. I admire her for doing what feels comfortable to her, and she admires me for doing what feels comfortable to me. I am not a drug user, nor do I condone their use. I have lost the only girl I really loved to drugs. But I'm not here to whine about my personal life. I am here to discuss my point. Avoidance of such a topic in a world where teenagers are drinking antifreeze to get high will only continue the decline. Jewel has offered me a outlook where things can be changed, through calmly studying and deducing problems, not completely shutting my eyes to them. I believe that talking things out is a great way to do this. If someone states a fact about Jewel and then states their opinion and asks how others feel, is that not the purpose of a mailing list? To learn about not only Jewel, but her fans as well? I believe that serves the purpose of bringing Jewel's fans closer together, through discussion, not debate. One more observation from your message: This is a mailing list, not a newsgroup. I agree with you totally that these discussions should not be found there. A newsgroup is what you are looking for, a less interactive place to provide straight-laced info on a subject. Mailing lists were created because of the fact that newsgroups were too impersonal.
