The song features Jewel >accompanied by an orchestra and choir conducted by legendary producer and >arranger Arif Mardin. According the the *usually* accurate www.rockontv.com web site, the Sessions At West 54th with Jewel will premiere on Friday November 26th, which would mean it will start to appear on your local PBS stations that weekend. (by looking at various online program guides for PBS stations, it seems that the Sessions show is on either Friday, Saturday or Sunday in PBS markets) Also, the www.rockontv.com site mentioned that Jewel will be on the Today Show on NBC on the mornng of Friday October 15th. I have no idea if this is a new appearance or a re-run, but they usually note if the show is a re-run, which they didn't. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi Angels, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I know that some of you angels of the "male species", might be a little disappointed by this news. In the new issue of the National Enquirer...Oct 12, (see link below), there's a bit on the CMA's (All the BUZZ), as the following reads: "JEWEL Ropes A New Cowboy". Pop snsation Jewel has roped herself a broncobuster-- the world's No. 1 cowboy, Ty Murray. "Jewel's head over boots heels for Ty, the winningest rodeo cowboy of all time", an insider rvealed. "Jewel's always had a thing for cowboys -- going to rodeos and hanging out with ranch hands was a big part of herlife growing up in Alaska. "Now she's basically traded up -- throwing over soap actor-turned rodeo cowboy Chris Douglas for superstar Ty!" The 25-year old "You Were Meant for Me" singer has felt just like that about the 29-year old cowboy for a long time, said the insider. "Earlier this year, Jewel set out to lasso Ty. She started by sending him several notes, saying what a fan she was. "And when she got the chance recently, she had her puplicisst arrange for her to meet Ty. "Sparks flew immediately between the lovely blonde singer and the lanky rodeo cowboy. And they've been dating up a storm for the past few months." Jewel and Ty's first public appearence as a couple was the CMA Awards in Nashville on September 22. Jewel told a pal, "He's got me walking on air!" Note: There's a lovely pic of Jewel & Ty at the bottom which says, 'Pop Star Jewel is all smiles with new beau Ty Murray.' Don't worry fellas. Untill she's actually married, you all still have a chance...so keep your hopes high. };-> Susana, The Azorean Angel, http://www.nationalenquirer.com/ From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Oct 1 16:55:05 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id QAA18341 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 1 Oct 1999 16:54:31 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199910012054.QAA18341@smoe.org> Date: Sat, 02 Oct 1999 03:52:36 +0800 From: "teleute's dream" Subject: Jewel-News: jewel unplugged on mtvasia To: "jewel" Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk hej, mtvasia is airing jewel's umplugged performance again. this will be on the 4th of october, 1300 and 2100 hrs. - rvn ' hallelujah ' --- jb From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Oct 1 22:05:06 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id WAA23646 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 1 Oct 1999 22:04:58 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199910020204.WAA23646@smoe.org> From: alan@jeweljk.com Date: Fri, 1 Oct 1999 20:10:24 EDT Subject: Jewel-News: Re: Today show appearance To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk In a message dated 10/1/99 5:39:06 PM, ducksoup@quackquack.net writes: >the www.rockontv.com site mentioned that Jewel will be on the Today >Show on NBC on the mornng of Friday October 15th. More and more lately there have been posts coming in asking for lyrics to particular Jewel songs. If it is asking for lyrics to a song I know are on this page, I send them to Gerrit Kruidhof's page at http://www.endor.org/jewel If I know it's not there on Gerrit's page, or if there's a secondary question or topic in the post, I send the post on to the list. However, I know many more of you have Jewel lyrics on your page, and what I would like to do is to make a form-reply to send to folks asking for lyrics, but in this form-reply I'd like to have links to more than just Gerrit's page. This way we can cover most Jewel songs that have been out there a while. I will also send an email to the list with all the links that are sent in. So, if you have a page with more than a few Jewel lyrics, could you please send me a link to your page so I can include it in this form-reply. Also, Gerrit has a mailing list for Jewel lyrics. I think it would be a great idea to join this list if you are into lyrics a lot, and/or own web pages that have a lot of Jewel lyrics. It will help you all to build up your lyric listings, and maybe even correct some of the erroneous lyrics that are on pages right now. (not all "wrong" ones are erroneous of course, but just transcribed lyrics from earlier versions or particular concerts) The subscribe info for this list (as Gerrit has it on his page) is: If you would like to receive Jewel Lyrics on a consistent basis or can contribute more by transcribing them, feel free to subscribe to the Jewel Lyrics mailing list by sending a blank email to: JewelLyrics-subscribe@endor.org One last thing, if you have transcribed lyrics of a Jewel song that you know are not on many or any of the web pages out there, please feel free to send them on to Jewel@smoe.org. I am sure list members would love to read them. Mike :-) P.S. If you received more than one copy of this email, it is because you received a copy for each of the three versions of the smoe.org Jewel list that you might subscribe to. She was wearing black pants and a slip style baby blue tank top!!! and unlike the other people that sang with Merle, Jewel was sitting in the audiance during the concert, and then she came up from her seat to sing with him, which seemed kinda nice!!! =) that all for now!!! =) always, elana ===== "We compromised our pride, sacrificed our health We must demand more, not of each other, but more from ourselves." - Jewel From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Oct 7 18:34:44 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id SAA08262 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 7 Oct 1999 18:34:04 -0400 (EDT) From: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Message-Id: <199910072234.SAA08262@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org To: Jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: * Woodstock CD tracklist Date: Tue, 05 Oct 1999 10:01:06 GMT Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey you lot, here's the tracklisting of the upcoming Woodstock CD.. out October 19th... I've discussed the "Be The Difference That Makes A Difference" ideas with many of you personally & I think many of you have read a bit about HGH's Clearwater Project at www.clearwaterproject.com. However, I'm well aware that many more of you have been patiently waiting for more information about HGH. I know this because every day I recieve at least one of the following questions from EDAs: What is Higher Ground For Humanity? What is HGH's mission? How is HGH funded? What is unique about HGH? What programs is HGH currently involved with? How can I get involved? I've also recieved MANY inquiries over the past year from folks who wanted to contribute donations to HGH & plenty more wishing to communicate with HGH staff. I'm happy to announce that the resources for communications & the answers to your questions are now at your fingertips at the brand new HGH website, unveiled today at: http://www.highergroundhumanity.org We'd enjoy you visiting us! You'll find many answers as well as information about the various HGH alliances, including your own EDAFoundation (including photos from an HGH/EDAF meeting held earlier this year), as well as important links you should explore. There's also email & regular postal mail communications available on the site for those of you wishing to communicate directly with HGH. They want to hear from everyone who's written me the past year or so graciously offering skills or ideas. Theres been many of you! Now you can communicate directly with HGH staff via the site. I should also add that you can help support HGH's Clearwater Project in an enjoyable way, by purchasing Jewel's "Life Uncommon" benefit single being released on Tuesday. It'll be in stores & hopefully easy to find, but you can also find it as part of special limited quantity "NetAid Package" on the HGH site. It contains an HGH "Be The Difference" organic T-shirt, Sticker, and the benefit single all for only $15! All these proceeds will benefit HGH's Clearwater Project. You can view these items on the site (including a sneak preview of the single cover). Have a great weekend, enjoy NetAid & visit us for ideas if you would like to get involved! It was also in the online edition, and it includes a rather decent quality closeup picture of Jewel and Bono singing "New Day". You can see the picture and the article at http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/lmds730.htm The actual newspaper did not have the picture in it. The full article (with 3 or 4 mentions of Jewel) is below. Mike :-) Musical tastes melded for global harmony By Elysa Gardner, Special for USA TODAY EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Shortly after 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon, an eclectic array of pop stars put aside their musical differences and gathered onstage at Giants Stadium to kick off the American portion of the NetAid concert. Hearty-voiced Bono of U2 shared a microphone with wispy-voiced Jewel. Modern-rock darling Michael Stipe, a surprise guest, stood feet away from hip-hop-soul diva Mary J. Blige. And Meryl Streep got down with Wyclef Jean as he led the artists and the audience in a buoyant version of New Day, a single he made with Bono for NetAid. The seven hours that followed offered more collaborations between musicians representing different genres, cultures and generations. Singing the U2 hit One, Bono was accompanied by an orchestra of Juilliard students conducted by Quincy Jones. Sting teamed with French-Algerian singer Cheb Mami on two songs, including Desert Rose, a track from Sting's new album. Guitar hero Jimmy Page joined the Black Crowes for a medley of Led Zeppelin classics, including Whole Lotta Love and an instrumental version of Dazed and Confused. And Page was one of two celebrated guitarists who jammed with rapper Sean "Puffy" Combs and his bevy of scantily clad female dancers. Erstwhile Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, another surprise guest, lent his hard-rock panache to the Combs hit It's All About the Benjamins. "I just got a call at the last minute," said Slash, sitting in his dressing room moments before going onstage. "(Combs) and I were hooked up once before, but it didn't happen. I was going through all kinds of ups and downs with Guns N' Roses - leftover details that needed to be dealt with. But at this point, I could do this (performance) with Puff Daddy. And I thought the song was great." Backstage, other performers also gave props to their NetAid co-stars, including some who appeared at companion concerts in London and Geneva. "I wish I'd seen Bowie live," said Jewel, who was accompanied by her omnipresent mother/manager, Nedra Carroll. "He's awesome." Blige, who was resplendent in a wine-colored patent-leather jacket and matching boots, was "really psyched" to meet the relatively demure Jewel. "And I saw Quincy Jones, so that made me excited. And I saw Wyclef. So I'm good, you know?" Jones had a hard time deciding which performers he enjoyed most. "Everybody was great," he said. "Puffy and Bono and Wyclef and Sheryl Crow and Counting Crows and Jewel and Mary J. Blige - the arrangements behind Mary J. Blige just kill me. And Sting - I've been a fan of his for 25 years. We used to call him 'Stang.' " Jones also praised the pope, whom he and Bono recently met for a discussion of developing nations' debt, one facet of NetAid's focus on extreme world poverty. "His health has been frail, but he pulled everything together mentally and physically to be there for us," Jones said. "He had some hot shoes on, too - really, some mack-daddy shoes." Some of the artists discussed their decision to take part in the concert, which was organized largely to promote the month-old www.netaid.org site. "I've had sort of a beef with the Internet, because I think it creates and really propagates a pretty individualistic mind-set and a separatist attitude," Sheryl Crow said. "I think if you actually can get people involved on the Internet to do something that's world-minded - I just thought it was an incredible idea and one that I would definitely want to support." Will there be a second NetAid concert? "I think so," Jones said, "because when you get this kind of encouragement, you know it's gonna grow. Everybody's got their eye on the ball." Performances in the Universal-produced, USA Films release were excellent all-around. Tobey Maguire ("Pleasantville," "Deconstructing Harry") is steadily proving himself to be an extremely talented actor, Skeet Ulrich is no longer condemned to be the "poor relation" of Johnny Depp, and Jeffrey Wright is unrecognizable (for those familiar with "Basquiat") in a superb performance. In what is sure to be a "best newcomer" field day, Jewel puts all of the "she's just some beautiful folkie making movies" talk to rest, giving a perfectly nuanced performance as a Southern gentlelady with a possible bad luck curse on her head. Don't be mistaken, this film takes some thought to digest and may be a hard sell to the general public. However, one attendee at a press and industry screening harkened back to another predicted hard-sell (but wildly successful release) by calling "Devil": "Dances With War." At first look, it may seem an apologist's look at the Civil War, upon further review the film is a microcosmic look at the changing of America's morals and thought patterns in this era. Subtle and thoughtful are the words for this film, and think you must, if you expect to fully digest this piece of work. Check out Ray Pride's review of the film elsewhere in this issue. (the aforementioned review below :-)) TORONTO REVIEW: Lee's Smooth, Heroic "Ride With The Devil" by Ray Pride Pride--------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- Ang Lee has become our contemporary equivalent of Michael Curtiz, the most versatile stylist of the old Warner Bros. era. While themes recur in the work of Lee and screenwriter-producer James Schamus (particularly examinations of difficult choices forced by personal and familial clashes with tradition), the director's sixth feature is another demonstration of his focused intelligence and singular craft as he once more revels in diversity. (Notably, his director's credit appears here under a hand-cranked whetstone as it sharpens a knife.) After the artistic success of both "Sense and Sensibility" and "The Ice Storm," no one would think to ask why the Taiwanese born director of six features would take on the American Civil War. Yet the film began life at Fox, then shifted to Universal under producer Good Machine until Universal recently shifted its rights to USA Films. But on screen, past the politics of finance, the period once again seems fresh and effortless through Lee's eyes. The opening shot starts as a swoosh of motion against trees, and that rush of motion against nature is a recurring device. In a review many years ago Jean-Luc Godard said that directors needed to be like D. W. Griffith and rediscover how to capture the wind in the trees. Lee and cinematographer Frederick Elmes repeatedly surpass Godard's spur, with a whirlwind of story contained in a restlessly composed style. This pack of "true Missouri men" forced into retreat from their frontier lives are pale, peaked, long-haired irregulars who must shed blood to earn dignity. They include Jake Roedel (Tobey Maguire), Jack Bull (Skeet Ulrich), and as a slave whose freedom was bought by his now-best friend, Jeffrey Wright. (Jewel, and romance, come later.) Maguire is a taciturn, sly smiling observer, his face filled with upstanding rectitude yet galoot goofiness throughout, a Dutch-born boy of 18 whose sympathies shift perceptibly away from the traditions of the Old South over the course of the film's 134 minutes. Come hell or packs of Kansas Jayhawkers, Jake discovers that life's one lasting impulse, in the film's original title, is "To Live On." The bursts of violence result in devastation as wicked and awful as any post-apocalypse movie of the last two decades. They fight battles mostly forgotten outside the south, myths filled with iconic names like Quantrill. Yet Lee's approach is immediate and tactile, such as in the keen depiction of the eeriness of faceless horsemen thundering in the black night: sound, a blur of motion, gusts of gunfire. The "Federals" swoop down on the Missouri "bushwhackers" who sympathize with the South but , belong to no army. Lee and Schamus studiously imply that hand-to-hand, man-to-man, neighbor-to-neighbor warfare that the U.S. has not seen for almost 140 years remains painfully relevant today. Think Kosovo, Belgrade, East Timor. Boys see their fathers killed. Blood oaths are sworn over spilled blood. But wisdom, if hard-won, remains simple: "It ain't right and it ain't wrong: it just is." Mychael Danna's mix of Prokofiev-ish thunder and the fiddler's muse suits the often startling imagery. There is an abiding respect for the purifying force of fire and for the force of battles shown in grabbed glimpses. There is one image worthy of Tarkovsky, when ranks of riders prepare to ride over a ridge into Lawrence, Kansas, to annihilate the town, and the crack of a single gunshot causes a mass quiver, a hillside of man and horseflesh startled as if a single organism. The dialogue is filled with wry colloquialism, and often very funny, and most of the moral pronouncements, drawn on the period, are robustly epigrammatic: "You taught him mercy but he forgot it" is typical of the terse, accepting Southern style of speech we hear nowadays from only the very old. Coming from the fresh faces in the cast of "Ride With The Devil," the spiritual weariness and contentedness seems more elevated than incomprehensibly anachronistic. "Ride With The Devil" is the second Good Machine production to be cast off by Universal (after "Happiness.") Whatever the challenges in selling a Civil War story that mingles the epic and the heroic, romance and bloody gunfights, the USA Films marketers, many formerly at the now-defunct Gramercy Pictures, may be the ones who can best sell the film. The sort of sophisticated, varied campaigns that made "Elizabeth" a success for Gramercy may work again here. To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, First, let me get this out of the way. The #1 Question for the past two weeks: <> Well, there's a good reason for that! It's because Jewel is nowhere near NYC tomorrow & was never scheduled to be on that show. Why is it advertised everywhere? Beats me... The only outside chance (& I doubt this, too) is that Jewel taped several interviews for NBC weeks ago & perhaps they could be airing one of those. You can always watch or tape it to be 100% sure. Jody Applegate is kinda cute, so it shouldn't be too painful if a Jewel segment doesn't air on this show. ;-) Now, onto all the "WSIT" info. As I announced earlier this week, a new single for "What's Simple Is True" will be released tomorrow. For now, its a radio single only & it should begin getting airplay beginning Monday. You should be able to request it then & have the stations know what you're requesting. This version is the same version that will be on the "Ride With The Devil" movie soundtrack CD which is released on Thursday, November 23rd. And yes, it'll be released on Atlantic. On Tuesday Jewel shot the new video for it & as I also previously mentioned, that's now in post-production. This video was shot outdoors in a canyon in Los Angeles with Matthew Ralston (Jupiter & YWMFM) producing. Most all of the reviews on this film have been very positive... enthusiastic.... but falling short of calling it a great film... though we have had a pair of those. Seems like ol Ang is a genre-hopper... and personally... I'm all about his Kung Fu film that he has in the works... till then though... Here's Segue Zagnut with RIDE WITH THE DEVIL..... This is Segue Zagnut. Recently I ventured from my spot in the corner to the spotlight of a movie projector. I saw RIDE WITH THE DEVIL, Ang Lee's new film with Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, and Jewel. Simply put, this is a character drama set with in the civil war. It is a solid film with strong performances all around and not with out several surprises. First of all, guess what, Jewel can act. She's great. Her character is subtle and straight forward. There is an earthy quality to her that grounds the film. She is the safe house in attitude. The calm center is demeanor. There is a pleasant charisma to her that makes her undeniably appealing. Tobey Maguire is less of a surprise because of his outstanding performance in PLEASANTVILLE, but still he caught me off guard. Partially because he is almost unrecognizable with long hair and a beard. Tobey doesn't appear as yet to have the gambit of range, but with the right parts that is not necessary. I don't need to see him play a brand new character if he can keep the angles on the old one fresh and he does that here. Most importantly, he can hold the film on his own. I would not have guessed him as an honest leading man in a serious war drama. He passive aggressive self conflicted style is exactly what this film needed to portray the South in a politically conscious way, but without the preachy bullshit. With such a young cast, I was afraid that a YOUNG GUNS feel would be unavoidable. Between the directing and the performances, that fear was unfounded. Skeet Ulrich is quite good and surprisingly underplayed, also looking almost unrecognizable. But the nicest surprise is Jeffrey Wright. I recently saw Jeffrey Wright in Stalone's new film DETOX (or is it THE OUTPOST) and now I know he was miserably underused. This film works best at it's core. Wright taps into the core and glows. This film is not about statements or politics, it is about people. It is about respect and understanding for personal beliefs. Nothing in this movie really defends the South even though Wright plays a black man fighting against the North. It is a hard job to make his decisions understandable and heartbreaking. Wright nails it. The inevitable decision of self discovery that brings Wright's character arch to a close is outstanding. Jeffrey Wright must be nominated for his supporting role, I can't image five better performance will come out this year. I like Ang Lee's SENSE AND SENSIBILITY quite a bit, but it was more Hollywood then real. That makes this film's attention to authentic detail surprising. Too often period pieces that spend the time to get it right flaunt it to the detriment of the film. Lee chose not to emphasize the detail which is an important touch. The most memorable scene is near the beginning of the film where a shoot out takes place in and surrounding a farm house. This scene is extremely gripping, crossing the realer-then-life qualities of gun fire that SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and THREE KINGS had. The tension is high and it brings the viewer in close. In fact that is what works best with the directing, when Lee brings it down. Unfortunately, the grand scenes fall flat. The rest of the war scenes don't measure up and the tragic catastrophe of the Lawrence Massacre is boring and unengaging. Occasionally the film drags and ultimately took too long to close, which is why a film with so many great performances is only very good and not excellent. Fit this film into your fall schedule, it is well worth the time and money. I've said too much. But in swift succession Jewel has produced a debut album, Pieces of You, which sold 10m copies, a bestselling book of poems and then a second multi-platinum record. That only left the movies, and now with a solid supporting role in Ang Lee's latest film, the American civil war drama Ride With the Devil, the 25-year-old blonde with the crooked teeth and big chest has covered all the bases. "I feel more comfortable now that I've got a book and a movie out. When I was only a pop icon, it was scary. It was fake," she says. "With the poetry, it was my thoughts, and people could then see what I thought about my life and life around me." Never mind that she's dyslexic, or that her poems are painfully simplistic. For Jewel, all art is pretty much the same. "It's like, if you have a creative body, singing is one limb, writing another and acting another. My singing and songwriting one is the buffest - you know, the strongest - and the others were beginning to atrophy." It was Ang Lee who saved her from wasting away completely by casting her as Sue Lee Shelley in Ride With the Devil. Based on Daniel Woodrell's excellent, vivid novel Woe To Live On, it's part period war movie and part western and follows the bloody and increasingly desperate adventures of a gang of Southern bushwhackers, operating on the Kansas/Missouri border. This isn't the Civil war of received history, where armies in grey and blue bled each other to death in giant set-piece battles. Rather, it was a brutal game of hit-and-run that split families, pitted neighbours against each other and swiftly degenerated into a relentless cycle of revenge killings. Told from the perspective of Tobey Maguire's first-generation German-American, it's ultimately more involving than The Ice Storm, where Lee filmed the characters as if they were interesting specimens from another planet, and that's mainly due to the impressive ensemble cast, which reads like a roll call of up-and-coming actors - including the ubiquitous Jonathan Rhys Myers as a villain. Lee has a knack for getting the best out of young performers, and Maguire in particular has never been better as an outsider fighting for a cause that isn't really his. The surprise is that Jewel, in her first acting job since playing Dorothy in a 1995 charity production of The Wizard of Oz, fits into the picture so neatly. As a Southern war widow, she has the only significant female role and, despite being in the background much of the time, she's completely believable as a woman trying to raise her child and live a normal life while the men run around playing their deadly games. She also gets the Missouri accent down, but insists that Lee deserves a lot of the praise for her performance. "He's just been so patient and nurturing and careful. He's very quiet, he'll never get mad, he'll always help you to do better." She chose not to work with an acting coach, and instead just read as much as she could find on women of that period. "I was clueless to the fact that it was the beginning of feminism in many ways. The South was fighting to preserve a patriarchal system, where they got to own their property. The property was slaves, but it also included women. Women, in exchange for protection, served their husbands; they were a step above slaves but not their husbands. But so many men went to fight that it left the women alone, it destroyed the patriarchy," she points out. Of course, it helps that she looks the part. In her T-shirt, combat trousers and clogs, with rosy cheeks and a light tan, she's clearly an outdoor girl, the sort of sturdy type you can imagine running a farm in 19th-century America or roaming the Swiss Alps (where her grandfather came from). Unlike most of the other actors, she didn't need riding lessons. "It's such an ideal first role for me," she concedes. "I was raised on the land, I grew up with guys on a ranch." Her upbringing is a key part of the Jewel legend and one of the reasons why she's achieved such spectacular success, despite the apparent blandness of both her songs and poetry. The daughter of two not-very- successful folk singers, she grew up in Alaska, which is traditionally a place where eccentric Americans go to reinvent themselves after they've failed everywhere else. When her grand- father moved there from Switzerland, it wasn't even a state and the American government was still handing out free land to anyone willing to live the frontier life in the 20th century. There was no electricity or running water on the Kilcher homestead, and she lived a curious half- traditional, half-bohemian life as a child, mixing her daily chores on the ranch with singing alongside her dad in truck- stop bars. Her influences were those of her parents, who divorced when she was eight, and as she started to become famous, she had to put herself through a crash course in modern music. "I was a little backward, I didn't really know the Beatles or the Stones." By her own admission, her father was "out to lunch", and after brief stints with relatives in Hawaii and at an arts school in Michigan, she moved down to San Diego (still her nominal base) with her mum when she was 17. Living in a VW van, with her mother resident in another one parked alongside, she scrounged food, wrote the songs that would become Pieces of You, started singing in local coffee shops and ultimately scored a record contract. It's a classic American rags-to-riches tale, but she isn't one to sing the praises of how the United States is the land of opportunity. "I feel kind of left out of all that. A lot of my friends were left out of the system, on welfare or whatever. I never felt I was part of the American dream. I never thought about it, I just wanted to eat every day and not waitress." There's the sense with Jewel that she's a solo act in every way, and she claims to feel no solidarity with the likes of Sheryl Crow or Sarah McLachlan. "I'm kind of sick of the girl-rock thing," she states, "it's just boring as hell." One of the results of her early experiences is that she's not a woman to be messed with. She used to hitchhike around Alaska with a big knife and by the time she was a teenager was already used to fending off the unwelcome attentions of the men who saw her singing. She isn't short on self-confidence. Ask her if she's worried about spreading herself too thin by pursuing three different careers, and you get a blunt reply. "Not if you do it good." Her forceful attitude nonplussed the crew of Ride With the Devil, who apparently had to get used to running her errands, while her habit of strumming her guitar while other actors were rehearsing didn't initially endear her to the rest of the cast. "It's a real team sport, and that was hard for me to get used to," she admits. This side of Jewel, though, isn't the one her legions of mostly female fans see. They relate to her unconventional road to stardom, her optimism and the semi-cosmic ruminations that constitute her lyrics. There are no hidden depths to Jewel: she simply puts it all out there, and while songs such as Who Will Save Your Soul? make critics cringe, their directness conquers audiences. Along with her willingness to position herself firmly in the mainstream - she sang the national anthem at the 1997 Super Bowl and is about to release an album of Christmas-themed tunes - it's made her a huge star in the United States. It's a sobering fact that Pieces of You has sold almost as many copies as Nirvana's Nevermind. Some people have murmured that her spirituality might be a clever front. Mentioning this to Jewel, though, is a surefire way of getting her to drop her easy smile. "I don't use it at all in a marketing way. I don't think people perceive me that way." She seems serious about her fight to balance her spiritual concerns with life as a multimillionaire in the public eye. "I don't know how, I'm still learning. I'm always struggling with what is truth, what is just, what isn't just. It's just my own journey, and I do that in front of people now." Being the singular person she is, it's no surprise that she's stayed away from the star dating circuit, although there was a brief fling with Sean Penn in 1995 that ended when he returned to his wife and kids. She's currently seeing Chris Douglas, a former actor on a daytime soap who now travels the rodeo circuit roping cows and riding steers. "I'm not exactly hungering to get married and have kids right now, obviously, but I've been with a cowboy for a while and that's nice," she says sweetly. "I go to Montana whenever I can to see him." List Moderator Note: this is an OLD article, as she is no longer seeing Mr Douglas. (according to more recent interviews she's given) So far, the only blip on her horizon is the $10m lawsuit her former manager Inga Vainshtein slapped on her and her mother, who now manages her, last year. Vainshtein had seen Jewel while she was still in the coffee-shop stage of her career and introduced her to Atlantic Records, but was fired on St Valentine's Day, 1998. Jewel won't discuss her, but is remarkably close to her mum. "She's the one who encouraged me to live in my car because she knew it would force me into figuring out what I needed to do with myself, what was my purpose. She always encouraged me to ask those kinds of questions, rather than just settle for going to college and being safe." Whether or not Ride With the Devil is the success it deserves to be - and period movies only tend to work in the United States when they feature English actors and settings - it's likely to be just the start of her acting career. There will also be another book next year and no doubt another album, which is the way she always planned it. "I was really clear when I got in the business why I was getting into it. I wanted the love of doing what I do, and secondly to help people. Every decision I've made in my career has been, 'Does it help people or doesn't it?', so I've gotten to keep my career real to myself. It doesn't feel too alien now." With insight and sensitivity, her introspective acoustic-based songs struck a chord with a generation of music fans all over the world. The album spawned two hit singles, "You Were Meant for Me" and "Who Will Save Your Soul," and went on to sell over ten million copies. Without question, the young singer/songwriter had arrived. Since that time, Jewel has toured the country, selling out concert halls, and has released Spirit, the multi-platinum follow-up to Pieces of You. Jewel captures the spirit of the season on this first-ever SESSIONS AT WEST 54TH holiday-themed performance, showcasing the artist backed by her band, as well as strings and a choir, for a special hour of majestic traditional songs. ********************** * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand, * or have a burning question about Jewel and/or the list, * The Jewel/EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.quackquack.net/jewel * Many basic/common Jewel and list questions can be answered there :-) * * Need some Angelfood? To: jewel@smoe.org Hi all, As almost everyone here knows, Jewel's long awaited home video project was officially completed several weeks ago after almost a year of constant work & production by Bibi, West, Frank & their extremely talented video team. Let me assure you, it'll be well worth the wait! Here's the information everyone has been waiting for: Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk The video, titled "Jewel: A Life Uncommon", features an hour of vintage archival footage of Jewel's life both on & off the road as well as four complete song performances filmed earlier this year in Los Angeles at a private benefit concert for Higher Ground For Humanity. Interviews with those closest to Jewel & exclusive never before seen footage reveals what her life is like "behind the scenes" & all fans are sure to enjoy this. I received the "final cut" of the video a few days ago & although I've watched this project progress from the beginning & was directly involved recording the live performance audio tracks on it, I'd only seen miscellaneous sequences up until now. I've watched it in its entirety now several times. BiBi, West, Frank & their video team have achieved something truly incredible with this project. I found it insightful, educational, extremely fun & captivating from beginning to end! Jewel: A Life Uncommon primarily focuses on Jewel's life both on & off the road since mid 1995 & features plenty of never before seen footage from various stages of her career. There's home movies from her solo performances at Java Joe's, her first band tour in 1996 & classic clips from the struggle of her first European Tour. There's also plenty of "behind the scenes" footage at home, on the bus, in hotel rooms, in rehearsals, at video shoots & of course, on stage during this years Spirit Tour. Of particular note, is the incredible concert footage from the HGH Benefit in Los Angeles earlier this year. Included are complete performances of unreleased favorites "Down" & "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" in highly electrified form with the 1999 band. Also included is the most phenomenal performance of "Barcelona"; a version which truly captures a real peak moment of this years tour. This sequence is absolutely mesmerizing! The incredible footage & editing is completely captivating! Even I, who has heard it all, am blown away by this particular performance. Also of big interest are brief interview segments with Nedra, Shane, Atz Lee, Steve Poltz, Keith Anderson & Ron Shapiro explaining how various key events in Jewel's life & career REALLY happened. I guarantee everyone will gain new insight & achieve new levels of understanding of Jewel's work by watching this video & have a very enjoyable time in the process. Much of the "behind the scenes" footage will surely amaze even the most hardcore knowledgable fans. Things the public never sees, such as the offstage comradarie of Jewel & her band, songwriting with Steve Poltz & Jewel's relationship with Atlantic Records are all explored. Footage of the incredibly difficult 1997 European Tour will surely astound American fans. A sequence of Jewel creating the song "Last Dance Rodeo" in an unheated hotel room in Norway truly captures "the muse" as its spark hits & the chorus of this unreleased fan favorite reveals itself to Jewel for the first time. A priceless moment captured for posterity. But enough on giving away content. On to what you really want to know - When will "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" be released?! You won't have to wait much longer! We're releasing it a week from next Tuesday, November 2nd, to coincide with the release of her Christmas album. You'll be able to order "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" right here direct from JMerch (at www.jeweljk.com) beginning at Midnight (Pacific Standard Time) on Monday evening November 1st/2nd at Jewel's website. It'll also be available in stores beginning November 2nd. I thank everyone who has been patient throughout the past year as work progressed on this long awaited project! And I breathe a huge sigh of relief that all of you who haven't been so patient (& have been writing me relentlessly!) will finally be very happy campers! ;-) I knew "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" was going to be a wonderful project, but the results have far exceeded my wildest expectations. Now I anxiously await your reactions! My post about the "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" home video release is certainly no exception. Here we go! <> Suggested retail is $19.95 US dollars. <> I don't know what the exact equivalent to $19.95 is in Canadian dollars. Approximately whatever that is. <> Atlantic plans to initially distribute it to North American markets. <> Atlantic will be initially distributing the video in North American markets so it will be available in NTSC format, which is the format utilized for North American VCRs. If you feel the video should be distributed in PAL or SECAM formats, you should take a moment & write Atlantic Records to express your wishes directly to them, since they are the distributor. If enough people request this, they may consider distributing it internationally. I'd also suggest that those who want other formats please refrain from wasting your energy complaining to those who can't help you (namely me, the list or Jewel at her website) & concentrate your efforts toward convincing Atlantic Records to consider your requests. Of course anyone anywhere can easily purchase the video direct from JMerch at Jewel's website beginning at midnight on November 1st/2nd. Like all JMerch, they can ship it almost anywhere worldwide. <> No, it will only be available in Hi Fi Stereo VHS format. DVD was considered, but the much higher production costs could not be justified by the relatively small DVD demand at this time. A Jewel DVD is something being considered for the future, but not for this particular project. <> Yes, it's being distributed by Atlantic & it will be available in stores (that sell CDs &/or videotapes). <> I can't give you a list of specific stores, but any CD or video store should be able to at least order it for you if they don't already have it, once its released. If you are having any difficulty purchasing it locally, JMerch at Jewel's website will have it on release day & they will be most happy to help you. Remember, they can easily be contacted when you have any JMerch related question at customerservice@jeweljk.com. <> Yes, I think I saw you in one of the audiences! ;-) I think that answers all home video related questions. Don't forget Jewel is on The Tonight Show tonight & I hope to see a lot of familiar New England faces at the EDA Foundation Benefit at UCONN Saturday night. This show is different than Leno & Letterman as Craig actually gives musical guests some decent "couch time", so I'd expect a lot more than the "Jewel's new Christmas CD comes out next month" that Jay & Dave usually squeeze in. It has taken just six years for her nomad days of living in a van with her mother to transform into a luxury career rig tooling down a four-lane highway of artistic expression. She tours the world singing to packed arenas, models fashionably, writes best-selling poetry ("A Night Without Armor") and has been quick to put her resources and talent to use for humanitarian causes. At the top of her creative game, Jewel has managed the feat of keeping an open heart. The latest expression of her sharing spirit arrives gift-wrapped on a new CD called Joy: A Holiday Collection. In it she serves up a baker's dozen of Yuletide musical chestnuts ranging from a pure "Silent Night" to a jaunty romp with "Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer." It also features a medley combining the classic "Go Tell It On The Mountain" with her own "Life Uncommon" and the song Bette Midler made famous, "From A Distance." It's not surprising that a wintery theme should appeal to Jewel, since she spent most of her life growing up in Anchorage, Alaska -- home of the brave, land of the cold. Hers was a musical family. She learned to yodel expertly from her father and she discovered the intimate beauty of vocal harmony from her singing mother, Nedra. A life-changing experience happened when Jewel was "adopted" into an Ottawa Indian group and was allowed to participate in sacred tribal ceremonies. There, her confidence that she had gifts to share with the world was sparked in a way that has since been realized. Jewel focused on voice classes with opera training and also studied art, writing and dance. She even landed the lead in a college campus production of "Spoon River Anthology." In the early '90s, Jewel moved to San Diego with her mother and worked as a waitress. Soon she began playing regular gigs at a coffeehouse where she would tell stories and sing songs in what were sometimes 3-hour sets. Then she got a chance to perform with a band called The Rugburns, where she met her sometime writing partner Steve Poltz. It wasn't long before the ripples of her growing popularity eventually blossomed into a recording contract. She has since released three studio albums. She recently added professional acting to her list of credits, playing a role in the Civil War epic Ride With the Devil, directed by Ang Lee. Jewel has also taped an upcoming Yule-themed PBS special edition for its ongoing musical performance series, Sessions at West 54th, which will air on TV throughout December. As an added good deed in keeping with the season, Jewel issued a not-for-profit single of her "Life Uncommon" song with all proceeds donated to the Clearwater Project, which helps poor people get access to clean water. Like Jewel, it is a warm sentiment in a sometimes-chilly world. According to the trade organization, Jewel's bow ties Shania Twain's Mercury Records Nashville disc ``The Women in Me.'' The discs qualify for the RIAA's recently created Diamond Award, which tracks albums certified at the vaunted 10 million-unit level. Alanis Morissette's Maverick debut ``Jagged Little Pill'' leads the femme all-time and Diamond certifications at 16 million, followed by Whitney Houston's Arista Records offering ''Whitney Houston'' and Twain's ``Come on Over,'' which are both certified at 13 million units. Other Diamond certs for the month include Matchbox 20's ''Yourself or Someone Like You,'' the band's Atlantic debut. The Backstreet Boys' Jive Records disc ``Millennium'' and Britney Spears' Jive debut ``Baby One More Time'' are both certified at 8 million units, joining the Dixie Chicks' Sony/Monument disc ``Wide Open Spaces.'' The RIAA, which tracks albums shipped to stores but not sold through to fans, certified 43 gold (500,000 units), 23 platinum (1 million units) and 43 multiplatinum albums during the month. Santana's ``Supernatural'' topped the 3 million mark, becoming the veteran band's highest-certified album since the 1970 classic, ``Abraxas,'' which reached 4 million units. Lauryn Hill's ``The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,'' topped the 7 million unit mark. By doing so, the Ruffhouse/Columbia Records disc tops her old band the Fugees' best-selling album, ``The Score,'' which was certified at 6 million units. As he prepares to release his latest album, Michael Jackson's double-disc collection, ``HIStory: Past, Present & Future, Book I'' topped 7 million units, a level attained or exceeded by three previous Jackson albums -- ``Off the Wall'' (7 million), ``Thriller'' (25 million) and ``Bad'' (8 million). The Temptations receive over 30 RIAA certifications, with their first multiplatinum certification awarded for their 1996 Motown Records release, ``The Temptations Greatest Hits.'' The disc topped 2 million units. Two other albums by the group -- ``All the Million-Sellers'' and ``The Temptations Give Love at Christmas'' -- are certified platinum by the RIAA. The group had four singles -- ``I Can't Get Next to You,'' ''Ball of Confusion,'' ``Just My Imagination'' and ``Papa Was a Rollin' Stone'' -- certified platinum. The Temptations are now second only to the Beatles as the group with the most RIAA certified gold singles. The Beatles have 24, while the Temptations have 16 total gold singles. For the benefit of those who haven't been paying attention, heres a repeat of my initial informational posts about this long anticipated project. Alan Repost part 1: MrBB-"Jewel: A Life Uncommon" Home Video-It's almost here! Hi all, As almost everyone here knows, Jewel's long awaited home video project was officially completed several weeks ago after almost a year of constant work & production by Bibi, West, Frank & their extremely talented video team. Let me assure you, it'll be well worth the wait! Here's the information everyone has been waiting for: The video, titled "Jewel: A Life Uncommon", features an hour of vintage archival footage of Jewel's life both on & off the road as well as four complete song performances filmed earlier this year in Los Angeles at a private benefit concert for Higher Ground For Humanity. Much of the "behind the scenes" footage will surely amaze even the most hardcore knowledgeable fans. Things the public never sees, such as the offstage camaraderie of Jewel & her band, songwriting with Steve Poltz & Jewel's relationship with Atlantic Records are all explored. It'll also be available in stores beginning Tuesday November 23rd. Repost part 2: MrBB- Jewel Home Video Q & A Hi again all, As always, any informational post leads to email bombardment of questions. I'd also suggest that those who want other formats please refrain from wasting your energy complaining to those who can't help you (namely me, the EDA list or Jewel at her website) & concentrate your efforts toward convincing Atlantic Records to consider your requests. <> Yes, it's being distributed by Atlantic & it will be available in stores (that sell CDs &/or videotapes) beginning Tuesday November 23rd. To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk From a visitor to the UK Internet Movie Database (uk.imdb.com): Date: 5 October 1999 Summary: surprisingly witty and engaging If it weren't for the young, mostly unproven cast, Ride with the Devil would be a shoo-in for Oscar contention. It has some of the wittiest dialogue in recent memory, with the banter between Tobey Maguire and Jewel matching the best Tracy-Hepburn repartee. The plot moves steadily but surprisingly - never racing ahead (hence the viewer who found it slow) but also never telegraphing what's going to happen next. With most movies it's easy to tick off "plot point one, reversal, climax," but with Ride with the Devil the structure is buried deeper than that. The themes are also profoundly understated. The friendship between Maguire and the black slave humanizes the Civil War. It also shows why it's far more interesting to make the heroes southerners fighting AGAINST emancipation (who then have more to learn), as opposed to conventional good-guys with their moral compasses neatly pointing in the politically correct direction. Jewel has such a well-written and lively role that it would be almost impossible for her to screw it up. Many other actresses could have played the part; however, it's to Jewel's credit that she doesn't seem out of her league here. I sat through heaps of films during the Toronto Film Festival. This one stood out above flashier critical darlings like American Beauty. I'll even go so far as to say that the horseback-riding, pistol-waving battle scenes were some of my favourite moments, and I normally hate macho stuff. This film earns its epic big-screen glory. Every element - plot, theme, character - manages to entertain in an original way. -- From Radio Times, UK: The [film] opens with a suitable prestigious premiere, Ang Lee's emotional, epic drama of the American Civil War. Far from the battlefields of the Blue and the Gray, Lee turns a thoughtful gaze on the vicious guerrilla war waged among neighbours (Union sympathisers and the pro-southern "Bushwackers") on the Missouri-Kansas border. As he did in Sense and Sensibility and The Ice Storm, the Taiwanese Lee shows an astonishingly evocative grasp of another time, place and culture, sensitively centring still all-too-relevant personal and social themes in magnificant landscapes and some spectacular, brutal action. Playing the innocents getting wisdom through hardship and horror, a superb young ensemble led by Skeet Ulrich, singing star Jewel and Pleasantville's Tobey Maguire (above from left with Jeffrey Wright) cut a romantic dash with touching conviction. -- From 'Empire' magazine, December 1999: Two childhood friends discover love and manhood in the midst of strife of the American Civil War. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ What's this? A Western? Surely Ang Lee, delicate maestro of the parlour-room conflict, is finally out of his depth. Yet with Ride With The Devil (based on Daniel Woodrell's novel Woe To Live On), dripping with horse sweat and ragged, furious gunplay, Lee proves as adept at divining the mythology of America's birth pangs as he is at creating the worlds of Taiwanese social morés, Jane Austen's corset repression and 70s staypress familial agonies. And while not as intense or talky as his back catalogue, Ride is every bit as groundbreaking and intelligent - just with less wife-swapping and more horses. Shot with the kind of cinematography that loosens Oscar cabinets, and populated with a cast of less familiar hip young things, this is a masterwork, melding internal conflict with external drama and vivid, sprawling action pieces that the likes of Eastwood, Ford or even Peckinpah would tip their hats toward. Put oversimply, it follows the rites-of-passage of young Jake Roedel (the auspicious Maguire), who ignores his Unionist father and elects to follow his best friend Jack Bull Chiles (Ulrich) and his own beliefs into the Confederacy - and a brutal war that will finally render any ideology pointless. Set (and accurately made) on the Missouri/Kansas border, a stunningly lush Brit-like landscape of farms and dense woodland, it is a long way from the military manoeuvres of the Greys and the Blues. Tapping into a Vietnam-esque war of attrition, the friends join a callous band of killers (including a beardy James Caviezel and a psychotic Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) and endure a conflict of guerrilla tactics and deception between the Southernist Bushwackers and Yankee Jayhawkers, which allows Lee to try his hand at brutal shoot-outs and, in one huge opera of violence, re-enact a real-life mass slaughter, as a rag-tag Confederate army reduce the town of Lawrence, Kansas, to rubble. This is also, of course, an Ang Lee movie - a grandiose Western concerned with human relationships. Jewel makes a polished and attractive debut as the love interest of both friends; far from a clichéd love triangle, her maddening attempts to woo a resolutely bachelor Jake are among the film's most touching moments. Jeffrey Wright (who shone in 1996's Basquiat) is an even more complex character, a slave conversely fighting for the South and the cause of slavery, whose strange yet devoted friendship to Jake is a pivotal feature. James Schamus' politically astute script is at pains to consider the mindset of the Southern fighters, painting a realistic vision of men fighting for family and land, and not simply a bunch of racist Dixie baddies. And even within this highly-charged drama, Lee succeeds in adding humour to the range and colour of emotions he evokes from his material, slipping in the gentle laughs inherent in the absurdity of their situation. He even manages his trademark lavish mealtime motif. Ride falls narrowly short of five-star glory, care of its occasional loss of narrative focus, and fails to truly get into the hearts and minds of some of the characters - chiefly Ulrich's frustratingly vague Jack Bull and Rhys-Meyers' overblown nutcase - but these are just irritants, not flaws. Ang Lee's sweeping romantic Civil War adventure clips the bar of masterpiece and remains a magisterial movie experience IAN NATHAN [four stars] -- From Total Film, December 1999: What's the story? The Kansas-Missouri border, 1861. As America goes to war with itself, Jake Roedel (Maguire) and Jack Bull Chiles (Ulrich) join the Southern irregulars, or "Bushwackers", launching surprise attacks on the Union soldiers. After initial success, Jake begins to question his loyalty to the cause, while his German parentage and friendship with a freed slave (Wright) arouses the suspicion of his comrades. Chiles, meanwhile, falls in love with fetching 'widder' Sue Lee (Jewel). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ While filming Sense And Sensibility, Ang Lee told his producer James Schamus he wanted to make a movie "with characters who have dirty fingernails". The Taiwanese director's wish comes true with this Gone With The Wind-style epic, a mix of history lesson and horse opera that offers a Young Guns perspective on the American Civil War. Any doubts that Lee may be out of his depth in such an alien time and place are soon dispelled by the scale and ambition of his sixth feature. For while the emphasis is on the periphery of the conflict - the guerrilla tactics pursued by The Ice Storm's Maguire and his nomadic band of gunslingers - Ride With The Devil has its share of audacious set-pieces: a pitched battle between the Yankees and the Bushwackers, for example, or the harrowing recreation of the 1863 Lawrence Massacre, the largest mass murder on record. These scenes are undoubtedly impressive, but Lee scores even higher in the way he shows his youthful protagonists growing old before their time, their innocence butchered by cruel circumstance. Jake kills 15 men before he loses his cherry, Sue Lee (folk singer Jewel in a very respectable acting debut) is widowed twice in two years; while Jack Bull sees his dad shot dead, in front of him. The boyish cast, with the exception of Rhys Myers (far too pretty to convince as a psychotic renegade), are outstanding, bringing maturity and gravitas to their performances. Where this film flounders is in its depiction of an ex-slave fighting on the Confederate side. This may indeed be historically accurate, but Maguire's buddy bonding with Basquiat's Wright has an anachronistic, Lethal Weapon-ish flavour that flies in the face of recorded fact. This, though, is the only flaw in a masterly Western-war drama that's already being tipped as a serious Oscar contender. Neil Smith Final Verdict A grittily authentic depiction of internecine strife, not without its humourous moments (look out for The Full Monty's Tom Wilkinson). Lee's sweeping saga is a long way from Jane Austen, but he handles the material with breathtaking assurance. [Four Stars] -- From Hot Tickets, Oct 1999: Evening Standard Hot Tickets 28 October 1999 Having scrutinised Austen's rarified society in Sense And Sensibility and dissected Seventies sexual mores in The Ice Storm, director Ang Lee was unlikely to come up with a standard take on the US Civil War. Thus Ride With The Devil approaches its canvas from an intriguing point of view. A motley collection of young Southerners form a guerrilla band to bushwack Union soldiers. Their actions are complicated by the shifting relationships of a group that includes a German/American and a black Southerner. Add a love triangle and Lee's intentions become clear: an epic study of relationships set against one of the most turbulent moments in American history. A very fine film. Neil Norman -- I think the film offers and asking price for Jewel are going to increase? What do you all think? Joy To The World - A nice big start to the album. The Choir bursts out straight away with the well-known chorus to the song, and it sounds quite church-sounding, if you get what I mean. Then Jewel's voice kicks in, bringing the song back down to earth. The first thing you notice is that Jewel's voice is still on top form and as good as ever. The song is quite mellow and really nice. 7/10 2. O Holy Night - I hadn't really heard this carol before, so it was nice to hear a 'new' Jewel song. It sounds more like a Jewel song this time, with Jewel's voice being comlimented by acoustic guitar and some subtle keyboards. Jewel hits some higher notes with this one, and it sounds good, even after half-way through when some strings and bells come in. Another nice one. 8/10 3. Silent Night - A well-known Christmas carol, again made perfect with Jewel's voice (and some harmony by Nedra!). Another choir one, and you really begin to notice that Jewel's voice is complimented a lot by these choirs. This starts off being quite true to the normal style of the song, but half-way through the choir comes in and it's really uplifting. 8/10 4. Winter Wonderland - 'Oh nooo!' I thought when I heard the beginning to this song. One of the cheesier songs on the album, but after the almost unbearable beginning, it gets quite sweet and more Jewel-ish, again with the choir complimenting her well. This is a bit slower and mellower than most of the versions I've heard of this, and Jewel even does a bit of her yodeling and scatting. The only problem is the beginning, and the hawaiian guitar that annoys you all the way through it. Without these it would be a lovely song. 7/10 5. O Little Town Of Bethlehem - Wow, this starts off sounding a bit like Disney's Aladdin! 'Cool!' was my first thought. But again, after the intro, it changes and reverts to the mellower, more Jewel-y style. Another choir one, and a more vocal-driven one. This is a different version to the one I'm used to, but it actually sounds better, in spite of the slight creepyness of it. Another good one. 8/10 6. Ave Maria - I almost mistook this for Angel Standing By after the first couple of seconds, but then it obviously wasn't, when Jewel's voice came in sounding a bit opera-ish and kind of like 'Amen'. I can't comment on the lyrics because I don't understand them, but again this is different to the Ave Maria I know. It's a good job though, because the Ave Maria I know is soooo cheesy! This one kind of plods along, and doesn't seem to go anywhere, but was a pleasant surprise in that it was a lot better than I expected! 8/10 7. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing - A kind of Titanic-ish intro, but that's soon over and Jewel is sounding extra-sweet here, with the choir perfectly complimenting her again. Another one that builds up all the way through, and another pleasant surpirse as I usually hate this song when it's sung by Christmas choirs. One of the best album tracks, and a really nice and sweet song. 9/10 8. Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer - Some of you will have heard a similar version of this before, but this song - kind of a capella, with Jewel, Nedra, some sliegh-bells and a choir - is really funny, full of Christmas spirit and a really good one to get you into the mood for Christmas. There are some really surprising parts to it (gets quite bluesy too), and it sounds like they had a lot of fun while recording this. 10/10 9. Face Of Love - The first 'original' song on the album, and I'd only heard it a couple of times before on angelfood. There is a whole verse sung by Nedra, and it proves my theory that these 2 should make a duets album somewhere along the line - they sound great together. This is a really really good song, and it just sounds so great. A kind of 'extension' to the Spirit album, it seems. 10/10 10. Medley - Wow wow wow wow wow! Without a doubt the best song on the album! It's so full of life and gospelly and, wow, you have to listen for yourself, it's out of this world! Jewel should definately do a gospel album!!! I love this! 'Go Tell It On The Mountain' is done in your typically gospel style - organs, clap-your-hands beats, and a very cool choir. 'From A Distance' is kind of your interlude/ending, just with the chorus of it, and Jewel and the choir are sounding great right here. 'Life Uncommon' is an improvement on the album version, and I'll be getting that single on import as soon as I can. I just wish that on this version she did that cool gospel scream thing that she did at NetAid! The choir sound so so good on this - 'lend your voiiiiiiiiiiices only to sounds of freedom'. This is the song on the album to get up on the table and dance to. Fantastic. The best song on the album 11/10 11. I Wonder As I Wander - Jewel and Nedra's second a capella duet, and this on really does remind me of 'This Little Bird'. It's kind of haunting, but is really good, and one of the songs on the album to get you thinking... I don't know why, but this one really stood out to me, and is one of the best tracks on the album! 10/10 12. Gloria - Jewel's self-written operatic-voiced song, which isn't Gloria as in 'hosanna in exelsis'! This is another spooky haunting one, but I didn't like this one as much. I like listening to Jewel when she sounds sweet or cute (or gospel!), and I don't really like the operatic stuff so much. Well, she can't please everybody all the time, but this is the weakest track for me on the album. 6/10 13. Hands (Christmas version) - Wow! A big, big improvement on the single version of this! The same lyrics and all, but the choir really brings so much to this and makes it so much more powerful, moving and, well, better! I was really impressed by this and am so happy that this song has finally done itself justice! Very moving, very cool, and a very good and powerful ending to a great album! 10/10 Well, when I found out Jewel was doing a Christmas album, I thought 'Great! More material!... but I hope it's not too cheesy.' Well, our girl's done us proud - it's only really cheesy in the intro's to the songs, but they then go down to earth afterwards. Every song is fantastic in it's own way, and Jewel's self-penned songs on here are like an extension to the material from Spirit. I'm really impressed with this album - finally, a Christmas album which I can enjoy! Well done Jewel! I'm just looking forward to Jewel's gospel album now! Someone asked what the inlay looked like for this album - well, there's the front cover that I guess you've seen. Well, everything else is in the same 'black and white and blue' kind of color sheme, but the inside is kind of like Spirit. You have your lyrics, and then you have your pictures on separate pages, with the thanks at the end. Except the pictures aren't of Jewel, they're of snowy, Christmassy landscapes - mountains, woods, trees, fields, etc. It's all done quite tastefully and I think you'll all like it ;) Hope that was interesting for you all - let me know your opinions if you want, and ask me any more questions you might have... Jeez, this is when it gets great to be a European EDA - you get the albums early!
