A rare performance by master musical instrument creator Bill Wesley Bill makes his own, very unique musical instuments. I can't even begin to describe what they sound like. You've just got to hear it . The Artist Rizioule Speaks of Love,Pain,Fear.Hope and Freedom in this glimpse into The Noble Fortune Story. Gregory Page There are many who consider Gregory to be one of the WORLDs finest musicians. A former member of the Rugburns, Gregory's acclaim as a solo artist has become almost legendary in some circles. This humble genius is someone you do not want to miss. Gregory is definately a bright and shining star. ( Jewel LOVES Gregory Page ) Many, Many other performers will be there to entertain you throughout the weekend. Here is a list of MoST of them, a couple are still pending. Gregory Page C.J. Here are some of the questions that have been asked. I hope these answers inform and entertain you. People ask the darndest things ... Question : Hi! I would love to go to the event on (Labor Day) weekend. I am an under age angel ( :( ). let me know what's going on about meeting. Thanks! Answer : So far I only have a small handfull of Under 21 EDA's coming, So I will probably set something up at Java-Joe's for you guys. I wanted to set something up in the hotel resturaunt, it's really cool, but we would need quite a few others to make that feasable. If many more of you let me know you are coming, that may still be a possibility. I am looking forward to my first opportunity to juggle two shows at once : ) And now, for my next act... Question : How far is it away from Mission Beach? Do you know how to get there from Mission Beach? If not, do you know the address? I appreciate it. Answer : The address is Jasons Nightclub ( Inside the Quality Inn Hotel ) 2901 Nimitz Blvd ( Point Loma ) San Diego (It's about 3 miles from Mission Beach) Question : ok i have a Question ? This may sound like im a real airhead but maybe i didnt quite get the labor day music fest ...Is jewel gonna be their? I live in Arizona and I would really like to go if she'e gonna be their but I dont want to go all the way their and she's not their !!! catch my drift ?? Answer : Well, I tell ya, Jewel wanted to perform but the only slot she was available to play was at the time my ultra-hip, freakadelic friends, "The Porkrind Project" are scheduled to perform. So I says, "Jewel, you know I'd love to have you, but the Porkrind Project is gonna be playing then . So she may show up to heckle the boys for stealing her spot, but if I were you, I'd stay in Arizona : ) Question : Is there going to be one in new york? because I don't think its fair to have one in San Diego alone!! Can someone organize one.somewhere in the tristate area Answer : You certainly may. In fact, the Higher Ground for Humanity has more than once expressed to me their desire to see more EDA's getting involved in planning special events such as concerts, gatherings etc. and basically " Living your Dreams" We all have dreams. Modern day society has atttempted to teach us that these dreams are the stuff of impractical whimsey, and that they have no place in the "Real World" I believe that the opposite is true. These dreams light the paths to our true purpose. Let your dreams be your guide, and your deepest hopes be your calling and then you may find your destiny. let us sing... Oh, can't you see the light Can't you see the way It's all made out for you All you have to do is try, And you'll find, that the future, is waiting with open arms to comfort you Never try Never find the answer You've got to journey to the distance and look around you. It's so easy, when you know just what you need. The hardest part, is to realize what you're missing And when you find the answer to your dream, broaden your horizons and make a new one. Question : > I would like to discuss the possibilities of the "***' to perform in this > event. There is not a lot of time left, so we would need to know if you could > possibly get more gigs for him there to make the trip worthwhile. Answer : That is possible. I will need a press kit. Rizioule Sound Productions 4811 Del Monte Ave #1 San Diego Ca. 92107 Question : Could we in fact get airfare in time? Answer : It's almost two weeks away. You could come by train or plane or bus. Question : Would a motel be provided? Answer : Yes, just for you. Ummm... you don't mind driving from Tiajuana do you ? Rizioule Sound Productions Bringing the Lightening to San Diego ! Also good talking to many of you & running into Nancy Porter (the InnerChange Coffeehouse owner) there. Great night! Thanks Jason & Sonja! Havin a great time out here in CA & have some quick updates of big interest: Jewel's Christmas album release has been bumped up a week sooner to November 2nd. It'll be an enhanced CD with multimedia, including animated poetry by Jewel, exclusive video from the sessions among other content. And if that wasn't welcome news, I have some more: Yes, the Jewel home video is wrapping up! It's really wonderful & I know everyone here will be amazed by the incredible footage assembled by Jewel's creative team on this. It will be in your hands before years end. :-) While I'm hopefully getting everyone in a good mood, a LOT more thought-provoking content is soon coming to the web in the form of major content about Higher Ground For Humanity & related projects. HGH will also be featured on the soon to be unvieled NetAid site. I'll keep you informed on these developements & highly encourage all EDAs to at least spend some time educating yourself. If you haven't visited the HGH pages of Jewel's site, that would be a fine idea to get some general background about Jewel & Nedra's Foundation. Much more info very soon! And finally, we'll be starting a new jeweljk.com contest later next week. Stop by & check it out! First prize this time is going to be something VERY RARE! Enjoy the weekend, Alan P.S. I almost forgot to mention.... Congratulations to Kevin Olsen from Los Angeles, CA. He was our grand prize winner of the limited edition print by Jewel (during our last contest at Jewel's website). Also, they were going to exclude guest requests, but have agreed to allow each invitee ONE guest. This can be a parent, guardian, or friend. Whatever works best for you. The only people who need to call back the number given in the invite email are those unable to go. This will allow someone else to take the place of those unable to attend. Otherwise, simply follow the instructions they sent you. Also, please be sure to BRING YOUR ID!!!! Anyone who cannot match their ID to the guest list (or is not the one guest of an invitee) will not be allowed in. PLEASE REMEMBER THIS!! OK. That should do it. How you will get to the session and home: Must be responsible for getting to the session and home. (I live in CT, and will be taking the train to and from.) 3. Created by Cisco Systems and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), NetAid brings together for the first time the energy and impact of world-renowned artists, the global reach of television and radio, and the vast potential of the Internet to help more than one billion people who live on less than one dollar per day.*; Its goal is to generate one billion hits against extreme poverty that will lead to millions of concrete actions including donations of time, expertise, goods or money. Three overlapping NetAid concerts will be held October 9 at Giants Stadium in New York, Wembley Stadium in London and the Palais des Nations in Geneva.*; Each of the artists scheduled to appear will play a set.*; The artists by venue include: Giants Stadium Mary J. Blige, Bon Jovi, Busta'Rhymes, Counting Crows, Wyclef Jean with Bono, Jimmy Page & friends, Puff Daddy, Sting with Cheb Mami, Zucchero Wembley Stadium Bryan Adams, David Bowie, Bush, Catatonia, The Corrs, The Eurythmics, George Michael, Stereophonics, Robbie Williams Palais des Nations Des'ree, Bryan Ferry, Michael Kamen, Orchestra, Texas Sheryl Crow and Jewel also have confirmed but not for a specific venue. (according to www.jeweljk.com) Tickets for the Giants Stadium concert go on sale Friday at 9am EDT at all New York and New Jersey Ticketmaster outlets and at www.ticketmaster.com. Wembley tickets are already on sale.*; The Geneva show is by invitation only. "This incredible lineup of talent continues a great legacy of creative artists who have stepped up to help people most in need, and there is no more serious problem today than widespread extreme poverty," said Quincy Jones, a spokesman for NetAid.*; "The difference this time is that the Internet enables people to take action over and over again, and do much more than contribute money one time."*; Jones promised that the artists involvement in NetAid will be " the magnet that will draw people in, the sizzle that will excite folks to act, and the spirit that will bring people together as a community to take lasting action to fight extreme poverty." Wyclef Jean and Bono also announced the release of a new song and video created for NetAid entitled, New Day to be distributed by Columbia Records. The product of an extraordinary collaboration between two major stars, New Day captures the hope of NetAid - a better future for the globe's most impoverished people. The web site launched with the help of world leaders today is the largest in the world in terms of scale.*; It has the capacity to handle 125,000 simultaneous streams and one million hits per minute - a tenfold increase over existing sites.*; The web site has four major areas of content, providing information on NetAid, the concerts, what works (five pillars around which anti-poverty success stories are organised), and an action section through which individuals can find ways to help end extreme poverty.*; Initially designed to handle large volumes of visitors from the concerts, the site is expected to become the most comprehensive database or portal of poverty fighting activity in the world. Built by KPMG in just 90 days, the content of the site will be delivered by Akamai using a distributed network architecture that will employ 1,500 servers in over 90 locations worldwide.*; The site will be able to handle 1,000 secure e-payment transactions per second - one of the largest and most efficient e-commerce capacities ever developed.*; KPMG and Akamai are sponsors of NetAid. "The power to end extreme poverty is now online," said John Chambers, President and CEO of Cisco Systems.*; "Netaid.org enables ordinary citizens as well as world leaders and major artists to take action to fight extreme poverty around the world.*; The Internet already has made a difference in the way business is done around the world.*; Now the world's most powerful web site can help make the difference in eliminating one of the globe's most pressing problems." Secretary General Kofi Annan noted that, "NetAid is an inspiring example of the kind of corporate citizenship and public-private partnership that will be crucial in addressing the challenges of the 21st century." All of the monies raised through the NetAid web site will be disbursed to anti-poverty projects around the world.*; Net proceeds from the concerts will be used to help specific populations in extreme poverty in Kosovo and African countries. The concerts will be widely broadcast by VH1 and MTV in the US and the BBC television and radio in the UK.*; In addition, Radio Express has secured commitments to date from radio stations in 63 countries and territories. NBD Television Limited is distributing the television feed worldwide and has secured television networks in 17 countries with many more to be finalised.*; The entire program also will be webcast live with the help of Real Networks on two channels - one carrying the concert, the second showing backstage scenes. To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk If you're interested in the environment, and the health of our oceans and inland waterways, there is a great opportunity available to get involved in your community over the next several weeks, and catch a few more rays on the beach before winter sets in! The EDAF Beach Crusaders are heading back to our adopted beach in South Amboy, NJ on Saturday, September 18. Everyone (this means you!) is encouraged to attend, especially if you live in the NY/NJ/CT/PA area! This is our second cleanup of "Angel Beach" this year. What should you expect at the cleanup? You will be given brief instructions and supplies (gloves, collection bags and data cards) when you reach the site. You will then pair off, with one volunteer collecting debris and the other recording data (what is found) for what becomes part of an amazing statistical study of our planet's health! In addition to actually cleaning up our water, these cleanups also give many groups legislative leverage to prevent and correct future pollution. Thus, the volunteers' efforts work on many different levels. After the cleanup, we will be doing some angel partying -- barbequeing and beach games; maybe a local EDA will open their home to us, as well, since the "Campbell Inn" is in the midst of a major relocation this month... Similar beach cleanups will be going on all over the country and the world, many sponsored by the Center for Marine Conservation (CMC) and regional agencies. These international fall cleanups draw over 500,000 volunteers annually. For more information on the CMC and the coastal cleanup events online, visit: www.cmc-ocean.org/cleanupbro/index.php3 Anyone interested in planning their own local EDA beach cleanup or finding out if there are CMC events in their local area can also email the EDAF at EDAFinfo@aol.com and we will send you a contact name, telephone number and email address. Any new songs after 1996 would be good for the tape. It's okay if you have someone coughing during Foolish Games on part of the tape- what I plan to do is take the new songs off what you can supply for a tape of newer material. If you have such a tape, especially if you have a master (recorded it yourself) please email me and let me know: 1) What quality is the tape? 2) What 'new' songs are on the tape? 3) What was the date of the performance? The goal is to provide a tape on the site of newer material to balance the older tape offerings. It's arguably more important to keep distribution of quality pre-97 tapes alive since those tend to degrade as they're passed along among EDAs, but we have had requests for newer material as well and would like to offer it. Also, in conjunction with Higher Ground For Humanity, the Clearwater Project website went online. For all of you interested in HGH, I highly suggest you take a little surfing expedition to www.clearwaterproject.com. You'll learn a lot more about one of HGH's major projects & see how you can make a difference & participate. A brand new HGH Website (of its own) is in its final readying stages & will be online very soon. I'll drop you a line as soon as it goes live. And speaking of new websites, you can learn more about NetAid in the Headline News on Jewel's site & find a link to NetAid.org which you should also take a look at. I won't take a lot of space here on it, because great info is at your surfing fingertips. Also quite a few people who are enjoying the 1999 setlist resource on Jewel's site have asked me to add the four 1999 shows from prior to the tour beginning. I did this today. So for those who want the complete setlists from the HGH Launch (the Aspen gig that became Jewel Rocks The Rockies" on VH1), & the "Women In Music" gig from January as well as the Paris & Madrid promo gigs in February, they're up. (Go to calendar & click setlists link below the calendar window.) I'll be adding the setlists from the final week of the tour ASAP. Check for those next week sometime. And now, onto our brand NEW Official Jewel Website Contest! The Grand Prize this time will certainly be of interest to EVERYONE here! There will be six winners this time with three Third Prizes, two Second Prizes & one Grand Prize. Our three Third Prize winners will receive their choice of one of the three JMerch coffee mugs. These are quite nice large mugs each featuring Jewel's artwork or quote on it. Our two Second Prize winners will be awarded both a Jewel "Bits & Baubles" CD AND a Jewel Tour Shirt. (Another possibility for those without access to Target Stores to win a "B&B" CD.) But onto what you really want to know! Our very lucky Grand Prize winner will get an authentic original cassette of Jewel's rarest & most collectible release! That's right! "Shiva Diva Doo Wop" As all hard core Jewel collectors know, this is the most difficult item of all Jewel releases to find a REAL ONE of. Real ones are selling between two & three HUNDRED dollars, if you can even find a real one these days. I know of only half a dozen people who actually have real ones. (Most online auctions & collector sites knowingly or unknowingly sell worthless fake copies, so beware! Even these are often going for several hundred dollars, much to my amazement. ) Only several hundred authentic "Shiva Diva Doo Wop" cassettes exist. For those unfamiliar with this extremely limited release, Jewel sold these cassettes on her very first residency tour prior to the release of her first album. The cassette contains four otherwise officially unreleased recordings & a jcard insert featuring an original drawing by Jewel. These were only available at Jewel's residency tour shows in January & February of 1995. They were never available again once her first album was released. "Shiva Diva Doo Wop" contains the following four recordings: "1000 Miles Away" "She Cries" "Painters" "My Own Private Gods Gift To Woman" There's No Purchase Necessary for your chance to win one of the 6 prizes! Simply visit Jewel's website & fill out the convenient contest form. Winners will be posted on www.jeweljk.com and notified via email. OK. So what are you waiting for?! Unfourtunately i didn't get to go (although i drained EVERY POSSIBLE CONTACT to try to get a ticket). however there is some information about other things that might be of interest. Rogers Community Television (cable 10) has 24 hour coverage of the film festival. Jewel is currently in Toronto to promote the movie with Ang Lee, Skeet Ulrich and Tobey McGuire. She is going to be doing an interview today (Saturday) with Christopher Heard (from Reel to Real). This will likely air on the Saturday Edition (6pm and 9pm) or the Sunday Edition (6pm and 9pm). There will also be "red carpet" coverage on a program called Rushes. This will also probably be on the Saturday Edition (which airs at 6:30pm and 9:30pm). Rogers Community Television also has live, unedited coverage of the major press conferences for the different movies. I have absolutely no clue when the one for Ride with the Devil will be on but you can be sure it'll be in the next couple of days. if anybody has any more specific information about scheduling that would be good - this is all mainly speculation. i've been watching rogers all the time. the only thing that's for sure is that christopher heard is interviewing jewel today (saturday) because i saw an interview with him where he stated that specifically. hope this has been helpful! steve From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Sep 11 17:02:52 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id RAA03820 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 11 Sep 1999 17:02:17 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199909112102.RAA03820@smoe.org> From: Fredsteve@aol.com Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 16:36:17 EDT Subject: Jewel-News: * Toronto Film Festival Press Conference To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hello I sent an email earlier saying that there would likely be a press conference for Ride with the Devil on ROGERS cable 10 (in toronto). Well the Press Conference was just held and it was broadcast live. Jewel was there (right in the centre, looking great!) along with Tobey McGuire, Skeet Ulrich, Jeffrey Wright and of course Ang Lee. James Shamus who wrote and produced the film was also there. All the cast answered some questions. Jewel was asked quite a few questons. She was charming and cute as always but looked extremely tired - no wonder. I'm sure this press conference will be repeated TONIGHT (saturday night). I've realised that this message probably won't get to anybody until after 6pm (same with my first message).. and there's no official schedule.. but keep your eye on the listings throughout the night (ch. 5) and watch out for Press Conferences. I believe it was the first of the day. So, here is thh Reader's Digest September 1999 cover story.. Well worth getting IMO.. Every pic in there is new, four in total.. -- NO TURNING BACK Facing her greatest challenge, Jewel refused to play it safe By Suzzane Chazin Jewel Kilcher was just 18, fresh out of high school and completely unsure of what to do with her life. She had moved from Michigan to San Diego to be with her divorced mother and was working at a series of disappointing, low-paying jobs--waiting tables and punching cash registers. There was little time or money for exploring careers. In fact she was barely scraping by. Things only worsened when a burning began in the willowy teenager's back and traveled all the way down her groin. Her long blond hair was damp with fever the day she mutely followed her mother into a hospital emergency room. It was the eighth medical facility mother and daughter had visited that hazy spring afternoon in 1993. Three hospitals and four clinics had already refused to treat the girl's raging kidney infection because she was broke and lacked medical insurance. Finally they found a doctor who would attend to her, but it was a physical and spiritual low point. In the weeks that followed, Jewel poured out her anxieties to her mother, Nedra Carroll. What should she do? She loved the arts--literature, drawing, dance, music. But how could she possibly pursue any of these demanding careers when just surviving was claiming so much of her energy? Nedra, in tough financial straits herself, came up with a novel solution: they'd give up their shared apartment and move into vans near the beach. Without the pressure to meet their rent, Jewel could focus on her life goal and make it happen. After searching her soul, Jewel decided that singing and songwriting meant the most to her. But Nedra probed further, asking why. Jewel thought about her reasons. Money? She'd always had so little; she'd even grown accustomed to living on what she could carry in a knapsack. Fame? She'd always felt like an outsider, so that didn't matter. The one thing that she really cared about was her songs--inspiring people with her words and voice. "I want to sing to remind people to live their dreams," she told her mother. Still, she couldn't help feeling a flicker of fear. Friends were skeptical of her plans, and their doubts were contagious. What if she failed at the one thing she wanted to do? Perhaps she should look for a safer way to use her talent--singing on tour boats, for instance, or teaching grade school music, like her dad in Alaska. "Maybe I should have a fallback plan," she suggested to her mother. Nedra shook her head. "If you have a fallback plan, you will fall back. You are young. Be brave. Have faith in yourself." So the decision was made: the two would live like frontier women on the beach with the sound of the Pacific surf rolling in their ears. And Jewel would put her talents and ambitions to the test. It was not the first time either had lived such a spartan life. Nedra and Jewel's father, Atz Kilcher, a social worker, were raised on the Alaskan frontier. Though the Kilchers moved often when Jewel and her two brothers were small, she spent a good part of her formative years on her Swiss grandparents' 640-acre homestead, 225 miles southwest of Anchorage. Frontier Child: The homestead was a place of rugged beauty, surrounded by soaring tree-covered canyons and snow-capped mountains. But it was also isolated and harsh, with only a coal stove for warmth and an outhouse for plumbing. There, learning to do tough, physically demanding work, Jewel honed a spirit of determination. Even before the move, she had shown a single-mindedmess that impressed her family. In third grade, for instance, she was diagnosed with dyslexia, a disability that affected her reading and coordination. Later that year she was rejected from an after-school gymnastics program she desperately wanted to join, because she couldn't do somersaults and cartwheels. "That doesn't mean you can't do gymnastics," her mother told her. "It just means you'll have to work harder." So Jewel began practicing three hours a night until she could do the maneuvers as well as the natural atheletes in her grade. She was accepted into the program. Jewel showed the same determination singing. Watching her folk-singing parents perform, Jewel delighted in her father's yodeling and wanted to learn how to do it herself. But her parents, fearing it would strain her six-year-old vocal cords, were reluctant to teach her. So she practiced relentlessly on her own until she could do it with ease. But the young girl with the golden voice couldn't will away the most devastating event of her childhood. When Jewel was eight, her parents divorced. Nedra remained in Anchorage, and Atz moved to his parents' homestead. The children spent time with both parents, but lived mainly with their father. They took over the barn at the homestead and lived simply off the land--bleeding birch trees to make syrup, canning vegetables, smoking and drying salmon they caught themselves. Atz even taught the children to weave baskets from willow roots. He and Jewel became a singing duo. But unlike her parents' singing engagements, some of these were in seedy taverns and veteran halls, often reeking of smoke and spilled beer. The patrons included tattooed bikers, drifters and women past their prime still trying to squeeze into skintight jeans. At a biker bar in Anchorage, Jewel watched a man collapse in the parking lot from a drug overdose. "What I saw in those places turned me off drugs, drinking and smoking for life," she says. She also observed firsthand what happens to people who lose their passion for life and end up merely existing. And she vowed it would never happen to her. Singing to the clink of shot glasses and the chatter of bar crowds taught Jewel something she might never have learned any other way. One night, shortly before one of their performances, she and her father got into an argument. Already upset, Jewel broke into tears when her father reminded her to leave her personal life behind when she went onstage. What did it matter, she thought, since the audience consisted of just a few grizzled, drunked veterans? Then a man in the crowd scolded her. "Stop looking so depressed," he called out. The words had a humbling effect. Jewel suddenly understood that her job was to please the audience, not herself. She stopped crying and finished the set flawlessly. And she determined never to take an audience for granted again. By age 13, restless and wanting to spend more time with her mother, Jewel packed up and moved in with Nedra in Anchorage. But she was no longer the child her mother tucked into bed each night five years earlier. "I was bitter about the divorce, angry and mistrustful when I first moved in with my mom," explains Jewel. She developed friendships with members of street gangs. She dated older guys. She even shoplifted a few times. But Jewel's life took yet another new turn when a teacher from the Interlochen Arts Academy heard her sing at a summer music festival. Impressed by her voice, he encouranged her to apply for the prestigious arts school. Jewel did, and won a voice scholarship. Interlochen gave Jewel formal training in dance, writing and theater and broadened her artistic horizons. On The Beach: Growing up without running water water turned out to be good preparation for living in a van beside the Pacific. Used to quick scrubdowns in Alaska's subzero temperatures, Jewel was expert at washing her hair efficiently in public restrooms at Kmart and Denny's. She was comfortable with thrift-shop clothes and could get by on little more than carrots and peanut butter while looking for work. Eventually she found a regular spot performing at a Pacific Beach coffeehouse called The Inner Change. While there, she wrote a song entitled "Who Will Save Your Soul?" about those who lead lives of physical comfort but spiritual emptiness. By the middle of 1993 Jewel was attracting overflowing crowds to the coffeehouse and drawing the attention of record-industry talent scouts. Then in December 1993 her shimmering voice and folk-style acoustic songs landed her a recording contract with Atlantic Records. Jewel might have hoped that the worst of her struggles were behind her. But yet another round was beginning. When her first album, Pieces Of You, was released in February 1995, it sold fewer than 500 copies a week. Her sweetly innocent voice and uplifting songs were met with derision by the often-cynical entertainment industry. Undeterred, Jewel traveled the country alone, usually with only a road manager to keep her company. Back in San Diego, her mother helped to manage her career. Jewel played mostly small clubs, sometimes 40 concerts in 30 days, never staying more than a couple of nights in any one city. Worse still were some of her bookings. She would occasionally open for heavy-metal bands with screaming electric guitars and fans wearing garish clothes and makeup. Once, Jewel was booked to play a black high school in Detroit. She peeked through the curtain before the show, delighted to see a full auditorium of excited students. But their noisy exuberance turned to boos and catcalls when the curtain went up. They had expected a rap singer called Jewell, and a young woman with an acoustic guitar didn't turn them on. Many of the students walked out. Still, recalling her father's admonition years earlier, Jewel realized it was her job to give a good show. So she sang with undiminished passion for those who stayed. Radio stations refused to play her. Music critics scoffed at her lack of hipness. She was derided for everything from her crooked teeth to her constant encoragement that fans follow their dreams. But Jewel stayed on the road, playing coffeehouses, signing CDs in suburban stores and thanking everyone who came to her performances. Despite the carping of critics, more and more people took note of her talent and charisma, and word spread about her riveting live performances. As her fan base grew by word of mouth, the critics counted for less. By appealing directly to those who mattered to her--those for whom she wrote the music--Jewel ignited her career. The decisive breakthrough came in mid-1996 when Pieces of You went gold more than a year after its release, selling 500,000 copies. With radio stations responding at last to her fans, the single "Who Will Save Your Soul?" climbed the charts until it was a top-ten hit. By the time her second CD, Spirit, was released in late 1998, Jewel had an international following. Spirit went on to sell three million copies, and her admirers still couldn't get enough. Soon Jewel will apear in her first movie, a Civil War drama called Ride With the Devil. Film can only extend her reach as a star. All of which is a stunning journey for a young woman who was virtually homeless just six years ago. But Jewel Kilcher understands how it happened. In fact, she relives the converstaion with her mother that made all the difference. "If she'd encouraged me to have a fallback plan, I'd have made one. I was scared. But being safe didn't mean being happy." Nedra understood this, and so eventually did Jewel. Happiness came instead from following her passion--and realizing there could be no turning back. -- Scott Evans From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun Sep 12 10:32:57 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id KAA29294 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 12 Sep 1999 10:32:41 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199909121432.KAA29294@smoe.org> Date: Sun, 12 Sep 1999 10:06:37 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: * Toronto Sun Articles Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Here are links to a couple of articles that appeared in the Toronto Sun today. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi everyone, I got tickets to go to the North American premier of "Ride With the Devil" At the Toronto International Film Festival and I went yesterday to see the movie. I don’t want to ruin the movie for the rest of you so I won’t tell you what happens or anything, but I’ll tell you about the whole experience. Sorry it’s really long, editing isn’t one of my strong points!!! =) I got really dressed up cause I thought it would be fun!!! I went with my dad and we got there early so that we'd get good seats!!! They wouldn't let people in for awhile and then I had to wait for like 20 minutes inside, then we went to our seats, center balcony 2nd row!!! I got a program that had an article about the movie and a pic!!! Then we sat there for a long time it seemed like forever, I was starting to regret coming!!! There was a microphone set up on the stage in front of the screen, my dad said that maybe someone like the director of the film was going to say something, but I told him that nobody from the film was coming!!! =) Well, the lights dimmed and someone walked onto the stage and said a few words about the film and then the producer and Ang Lee the director came out, I thought it was nice of them to come!!! Then Ang said he’d like some of the cast members to come out!!! So, I’m thinking oh that’s nice maybe Skeet Ulrich or Tobey Maguire came... So Ang goes... Skeet Ulrich... [and there is a pause and then out walks Skeet and everyone claps] Tobey Maguire... [and there is a pause and then out walks Tobey and everyone claps] And I’m thinking oh that’s nice of them to come, cause I’ve enjoyed them in there previous films and I just saw Skeet on The View with his bad hair cut, anyways...] Then Ang goes... Jewel... [and it’s seems like the longest pause and I think they’re mistaken cause Jewel’s not here and...] Jewel walks out and everyone claps!!! =O Oh my god I didn’t know she was coming, I thought Jewel was only going to the hollywood premier!!! I couldn’t believe it there was Jewel... of coarse I couldn’t see her too well cause I was up in the balcony... but there was Jewel!!! For anyone who was wondering what she was wearing: She was wearing a light blue almost periwinkle colored evening dress with a shall or something around her shoulders, the dress was about to her knee, I think and the neckline was cut low!!! She looked nice!!! Well... anyways they all left the stage and the movie began!!! I felt so special me and Jewel at the movies, did you know we watch movies together now!!! =) hee, hee... Well, I was wondering where they were going to sit so I kept looking down from the balcony but I couldn’t see them!!! Oh, this is suppose to be about some movie right, oh ya "Ride With The Devil" There is a lot of violence, and as you all know it is about the civil war!!! Jewel isn’t in the movie for like the fist half an hour but she did show up later!!! You know what was weird, it’s suppose to be a serious movie and all, or at least that’s what I expected, and it was but it was also quite funny!!! Not all of it but just certain parts mostly the parts including Jewel!!! I think things were funnier because it was unexpected!!! But don’t get me wrong by no means is this a comedy!!! I would give you examples but I don’t want to ruin it for you!!! Jewel was great, she can act, I thought she did a really great job as did the other actors!!! My dad said Tobey seemed kinda weak at the beginning but he got much better as the movie progressed!!! The guys looked very rugged in it, but at the end Tobey looked very boyish!!! And Jewel did ride a mule, and there was something funny about that but I won’t tell you!!! =) I thought it was going to be a really long and boring violent movie, and I only went to see it cause Jewel was in it!!! I think I tried to convince myself it would be long and boring so that when it wasn’t I would think it was great!!! =) But it wasn’t boring, it was long though (like 2hr. 15mins.) and had a lot of violence but I wasn’t bored at all, I really enjoyed it!!! I didn’t think they really went into the emotions of the characters enough but that just might have been because of the time it took place in!!! And I thought that Jewel’s baby in the film was from her husband that died but it wasn’t!!! I also thought that her husband would die in the film but he didn’t he died before!!! It was also weird seeing Jewel play a character, I think I could see a little of Jewel in her character, and it was weird seeing her with a baby, I don’t know how motherly she seemed, but that might have been cause I wasn’t used to her having a baby!!! My dad actually caught some errors in the movie like someone buried with a blanket and then later in the movie the same blanket shows up again, stuff like that, I didn’t catch it but my dad’s good at that!!! Well, so Jewel was good the movie was good and I enjoyed it!!! At the end of the movie "What’s Simple Is True" came on!!! So, we started walking out and we wanted to go out a certain way but they stopped us and said we couldn’t go that way, but people were leaving that way so why couldn’t we? So, we asked and they said that they had to get the (I forget the real word) important people out first, so we said like who? They said the director, producer... Then Jewel came out with rest of the important people, so I was like no fair she’s right there, but she was in a crowd and not very close, she went down the way I couldn’t go, to the limos waiting for them!!! That is so cool Jewel was sitting right up in the balcony with me and I didn’t even know it, I thought she’d be sitting downstairs but no she was sitting up in the balcony with me!!! So, my dad said that maybe if you ask nicely they’ll let you by... So, I went up to one of the people not letting people by and asked "Can I please go down that way?" and they said "Oh, were you suppose to meet them down stairs?" "Ah, yes, yes I’m suppose to meet them down stairs" =) So they let me by!!! They thought I was part of the group of important people!!! =) Isn’t that funny, I’m really glad I got dressed up, cause if I had just worn jeans they wouldn’t have let me by!!! My dad gave me a pen and I had my program!!! So we passed them and went down stairs and I don’t see the group any more or Jewel, and I have no clue where I’m going!!! So then I see a door leading out side and I’m thinking aww I missed them!!! =) So I go out side and there’s a bunch of limos and a group of people and I’m looking for Jewel, and I couldn’t see her, wait there she is!!! =0 She is standing out side talking to people (I assume people from the movie, she knows them all) and they are all talking and different people are coming up to her and congratulating her and giving her huggs!!! And my dad says to go say hi, but suddenly I was so frightened I couldn’t do it, I was like oh my god she’s right there!!! It’s not like in concert where she’s on a different level she’s right there on the same level as me I freaked out!!! I didn’t expect to be "star struck" I know she’s just a normal person but for some reason I was!!! =) I wasn’t going to go over and ask her for her autograph I didn’t think that would be right, I just wanted to talk to her and thank her... So, I walked over to her and she was talking to people so I didn’t want to be rude and interrupt so I waited, I was standing right behind her, I was going to tap her on the shoulder but this was Jewel I couldn’t do that!!! Then she started talking to someone else and I was standing right beside Jewel as she talked to some guy I had no clue what they were talking about because my mind wasn’t working very well!!! I’m standing right beside Jewel and weirdly enough we’re like the exact same height cause I’m wearing really high heel boots!!! =) So, I wait till she finishes talking and then… "Hi ah Jewel" I started talking to her and I had no clue what I was saying. I told her I thought she did a really great job in the movie, and it was a really great movie, and she’s you know like saying thank you n’ stuff. She sees I’m holding a pen and she asks if I wanted her to sign something? So, I say "Ah ya, sure" and she sighs the back of my program (the pen didn’t work too well, remember to always test the pen on your hand first) Cause my autograph says: ewel cause you can barely see the J I think that’s so wrong to ask someone if they want your autograph, I know she was just being nice, but in general I think it’s wrong if it wasn’t Jewel it would have been wrong!!! =) I wasn’t going to ask her for an autograph, it wasn’t the place for it, I mean of coarse I’m glad I got it but you know what I mean, wait insulting Jewel comes next!!! =) So I thank her for the autograph and I start telling her that I watched hours of video on the civil war so that I’d understand the movie. And that I just saw her in concert in Buffalo and here (Toronto) and that she was great, and that she signed my book. She’s like you know saying really, ya, and stuff. I said "I just wanted to say I thought you did a really great job in the movie, and that it was *actually* a good movie!!!" So she’s like "*actually*, oh it was actually a good movie" [in a sarcastic tone] so she says thank you and I walk away!!! =( I didn’t mean to insult her, I don’t think she was really upset or anything but I felt so bad. Of all the things to say how about your such an inspiration for me or at least say something intelligent!!! ;[ So, I felt really bad about it after but I was so glad I got to meet her, I couldn’t believe it I was standing with Jewel that’s so cool, isn’t it? She was right there, I couldn’t have gotten any closer, not on tv, not on a stage right there in front of me!!! Oh, some fans that couldn’t get too where I was were yelling "I love you Jewel" and she yelled "I love you too" back and she stayed there for a couple more minutes after I left and then she got into a limo and left!!! This would have been the perfect opportunity to get to actually talk to her but I did the best I could well still in shock!!! =) I still don’t understand why I was so nervous!!! I didn’t realize Skeet and Tobey were standing there also, I would have liked to see them and say hi, I saw Ang Lee the director but I didn’t go up to him, I should have but I wasn’t thinking!!! =) So that’s my story, I figure practice makes perfect and by about the 5th time I meet Jewel I’ll get it right!!! =) But I was really lucky and I will always remember what a cool night it was!!! =) Well, if anyone has any questions about the movie I’d be glad to answer them, I just didn’t want to ruin it for the rest of you that hadn’t seen it yet!!! =) Well, I just wanted to share my story with you!!! Sorry, this was so long!!! :' always, elana === "We compromised our pride, sacrificed our health We must demand more, not of each other, but more from ourselves." - Jewel From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun Sep 12 11:19:57 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id LAA00541 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 12 Sep 1999 11:19:24 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199909121519.LAA00541@smoe.org> Date: Sun, 12 Sep 1999 10:44:49 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: * Republished "Woe To Live On" (RWTD) ISBN # Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk In a message dated 9/11/99 10:41:37 PM, I wrote in part regarding the "Woe To Live On" book, which RWTD is based on: << If you'd like to track down the book, it was republished by No Exit Press in 1994 (after being out of print since its first publication in 1987). That ISBN # is 1-874061-24-6. This will actually be easier to find in the UK as thats where No Exit Press is located. I expect it to be republished here in the states, if it hasn't been already. Mike Jewel's shy but polished By BRUCE KIRKLAND Toronto Sun TORONTO -- Her voice hushed, her smile a little tentative and her pale cheeks aglow with girlish blush, Jewel charmed Toronto yesterday as she took a Ride With The Devil. The Ang Lee movie, which just played as a gala in the Toronto film festival, marks the singer-poet's film debut. Her remarkable performance opposite male leads Skeet Ulrich, Tobey Maguire and Jeffrey Wright is being touted as at least a revelation, probably a shock. Jewel had never acted in anything before, if you don't count one night playing Dorothy in a charity performance of The Wizard Of Oz in New York in 1995. Otherwise, she is seen on stages to deliver music and poetry, not dialogue. "It's a little different," Jewel told a Ride With The Devil press conference yesterday about performing a character, not a song. "It's a real different medium." She admitted she was terrified of being stripped of the confidence she exudes as a singer. Asked how she overcame that fear, she glanced at director Lee and whispered: "Ang!" Lee told reporters that Jewel was suggested for the major role by the movie's casting director. "I met with her and she was exactly right for the part. Then we spent a few months working together and, by the time I had to make the decision, I felt she was the best choice I had. "And it was a pleasure to work with her." Jewel is known for her optimistic songs on two multimillion-selling albums, her debut Pieces Of You and the follow-up Spirit. Her third release, all holiday songs, is scheduled for November. 'Something different' This film attracted her because of the evocative writing in James Schamus' script. "The role was something different from the southern belle," Jewel said. The tough-minded farm girl she plays must have seemed familiar, too. Raised on a farm in Alaska, Jewel knows that world. But repeatedly yesterday, she seemed reluctant to elaborate, choosing her words carefully, speaking so quietly that even a microphone had difficulty picking her up. She shrugged off suggestions that she brings a powerful female presence to an otherwise male-dominated war movie. Ride With The Devil is a U.S. Civil War saga in which Jewel plays a Missouri woman caught up in the lives of a group of pro-Confederate guerrilla fighters played by her co-stars. Schamus told the press conference that Jewel had one talent -- horseback riding -- that she did not get to use, which he found amusing. Especially considering that some of her co-stars, such as Maguire, kept falling off his steeds. "The real irony is that the best rider in the film is probably Jewel and we had to put her on a mule," Schamus said. Jewel laughed and confided: "I can't show my face to my father." 'Hands full' Jewel is also absent from the lush period music on the soundtrack. "I didn't have anything to do with the music," she said. "I had my hands full as an actor." Lee took Jewel through her panic period. "Obviously, I had never worked with a director before. I was horrified," she admitted about showing up on set the first day. "I didn't know what I was doing. I didn't know where to focus, where to look, what to do. I didn't know anything about it." But help was steps away on set: "Ang was my life preserver which I clung to desperately. My job was to please Ang." It has a picture of her arriving at the première of Ride With The Devil and she has on this blue frilly shirt with the caption "Jewel wowed the crowds at the première screening of Ride With The Devil at the Toronto International Film Festival yesterday". I typed up the article for all of you, just because I'm so nice. :) Jewel Sets Pulses Racing The news conference for Ride With The Devil results in a session of good old-fashioned star gazing. Maybe most men just have a hard time talking to Jewel. And who can blame them? Sporting a sheer white top with a plunging neckline, a fashion choice enhanced by the dark-coloured bra she wore underneath, the Alaska-born folk diva swanned into a standing- room-only media scrum yesterday to promote her movie debut at the 24th Toronto International Film Festival. One could almost hear the collective sound of male jaws dropping as the former coffeehouse vixen checker her lacquered nails and gazed into the middle distance as if to say, "Well?" Jewel, it should be pointed out, no longer needs to announce herself when she walks into a room. She merely sucks all the available oxygen out of it and waits for people -- men, anyway -- to asphyxiate on their self-consciousness. Born Jewel Kilcher, she is not shy about her sexuality, even if it seems at odds with the crunchy, post-hippie persona that led her out of obscurity as a 19-year-old minstrel. As Vogue magazine has noted, she is probably the first fold singer to go onstage in four-inch heels and a miniskirt -- "the Mariah Carey of folk." Yesterday, she went with blue hip-huggers, but the effect was just as eye-popping. Even amid the glitter of the festival's Armani set she cut a wide swath. On the face of it, this was a news conference for director Ang Lee's American Civil War drama, Ride With The Devil in which the singer plays a young Confederate widow named Sue Lee Shelley. But the subtext of this hourlong session had more to do with old-fashioned star gazing. "I know you've probably heard this question to death," apologized one young swain from the media, who finished his harmless query with an almost frightened look. "Sorry," he gulped. For her part, she seemed willing to play the modesty card with perfunctory conviction: "It's a real difficult medium," she said of screen acting. "I definitely had to gain a whole different set of skills to do the film." Did she feel confident? "No." What has helped her overcome her nervousness? "Ang," she said, smiling at the genial Taiwan-born director of The Ice Storm, Sense And Sensibility and The Wedding Banquet. He sat next to her on the podium, along with male members of the cast including Skeet Ulrich, Jeffrey Wright and Tobey Maguire. At the very least, Jewel's appearance here added the first blush of big-league American celebrity to the festival, which runs through next weekend. Even in a year in which the talents pools includes Robin Williams and Elton John, Jewel shares that rare air of truly famous. The surest sign of that was glimpsed outside the festival's Park Hyatt Hotel headquarters, where a gaggle of young girls waited for their heroine. Jewel's debut album Pieces Of You has sold more than 10 million copies since its release in 1995 and her book of poems, A Night Without Armor, was also a runaway bestseller. It's chock-a-block with the sort of dewy, undergraduate verse that would make a Hallmark writer blush but has set her up as the Elizabeth Barrett Browning of the Gap generation. Whether she'll enjoy such smooth passage into cinema remains to be seen. Her performance in Ride With The Devil, in which she plays a hard-luck war bride who loses two men to battle then woos a third (played by Maguire), was preceded by rampant industry rumours that she was "difficult" to work with. According to Entertainment Weekly, she "irked fellow actors by strumming a guitar on the set and addressing crew members in a high-pitched baby voice." One source said she "spoke to people like trash. 'Oh, can I please have a glass of water!' She'd use that tone and then she'd turn to somebody and go, 'See, that's how you have to talk to them.' " According to reports, Lee invested a lot of time in his young star. He hired an acting coach for her, rehearsed one-on-one with her. After three months of testing her skills, he decided to give her the job. New conferences, of course, are not for airing a movie's dirty laundry or expressing doubts -- they're a marketing vehicle. Right on cue, Lee said this was the best cast he'd ever worked with, Jewel included. And screenwriter and producer James Schamus added that "the real irony here is that the best rider in the movie was Jewel -- and she had to ride a mule." All the while, Jewel gazed dreamily into middle space. Or was that just a bored smirk? It doesn't really matter. What matters is that she looked great and said the right things in response. She said she "didn't know what the heck I was doing" during those first weeks on the set. She said that "Ang was like my life preserver that I clung to desperately." She also said she tried to do her best because she didn't want to "disappoint all the guys." And when somebody asked what kind of a role she had in selecting the movie's music (she sings a version of Aura Lee with Skeet Ulrich), she batted her big brown eyes and said: "I didn't have anything to do with the music. Lots of RWTD content: NEWS KC-filmed `Ride With the Devil' garners praise in North American debut TORONTO -- Wowing its audience with a heady blend of bloody action and heartfelt humanism, the Kansas City-filmed "Ride With the Devil" made its North American debut Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival. Toronto Sun critic Bruce Kirkland called it "the fest's most powerful historical drama...an evocative tale of murder, revenge, racial confusion, love and renewal. Jewel is a revelation. Tobey Maguire is a rising star." In introducing director Ang Lee's Civil War drama to an audience of nearly 1,600, festival director Piers Handling described "Devil" as "a quiet, delicate film about how once you release violence, how difficult it is to then escape it." And that Lee, a native of Taiwan, has created such an "extraordinary film" on such a quintessentially American topic was, Handling said, "just terrific." Before the gala screening in Roy Thompson Hall, Lee, writer-producer James Schamus and stars Maguire, Jewel, Skeet Ulrich and Jeffrey Wright took their bows from the stage. The attention was largely on Jewel, the 24-year-old pop singing star who makes her acting debut in the film. Toronto newspapers published color photos of Jewel taken at the gala -- a testament to her immense popularity. A jet-lagged Lee, Schamus and Maguire arrived in Toronto early Friday evening from Deauville, France, where on Thursday "Devil" opened that city's annual Festival of American Cinema and received a standing ovation from an audience that included Robin Williams, Lauren Bacall and Kirk Douglas. "The French audience absolutely loved it," said Vicky Henley of the Kansas Film Commission, who with Kansas City Film Projects director Patti Watkins attended both festivals. "They were very responsive." But the real test of the film is at Toronto, said Steven Flynn, vice president for marketing of USA Films, which will open "Devil" on American screens Nov. 24. "Toronto has the world's pre-eminent festival, in my opinion, because by debuting a film here you get instant international and domestic press exposure, and you get a good feel not only for critical reaction but for how the moviegoing public will respond to your picture." Toronto audiences -- which this year will see 319 films from 52 countries in just 10 days -- are valued by film distributors as representing a blend of mainstream and art-house sensibilities. Moreover, the town seems to go movie-crazy for the festival. Department- store window displays often are movie-themed, and screening tickets are so valued that this year a public lottery was initiated to ensure an equitable distribution: In the past, most tickets went to those who spent all night on a sidewalk outside the box office. Torontonians are so accustomed to movies being made under their noses that they no longer react to lights and cameras in the streets. But during the festival everyone seems to go star-crazy. It's easy to get the bug -- during just 10 minutes on Friday evening a gawker in the lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel could claim celebrity sightings of actors William H. Macy, Steve Zahn, Illeana Douglas, Bill Pullman, Mary Louise Parker and Kansas City native Chris Cooper. The response of Toronto filmgoers to "Ride With the Devil," which was shot in the Kansas City area in the spring and early summer of last year, was easy enough to gauge. Audience members could be seen flinching in some of the film's more violent moments, and in one scene depicting the amputation of a character's arm, many turned their heads away. But if "Devil" -- which is based on Missouri writer Daniel Woodrell's Woe to Live On -- offered an unblinking glimpse of the horrors of the Kansas-Missouri border war, it also buoyed the viewers' emotions with humor. In depicting the growing friendship between Maguire's Jake Roedel, a Huckleberry Finn-type innocent caught up in the war's madness, and Wright's Daniel Holt, a former slave riding with Confederate guerrillas, the film develops warmth and affection. And moviegoers responded. "They got it," a beaming Schamus said after the screening. "What I've found is that if you get the film's humor, you get what the film's about. It may be set in the Civil War, but basically it's a relationship movie." Kansas City audiences will find the film steeped in local history and peppered with references to familiar places and events -- Kansas City, Independence, Lexington, Mo., the Sni-A-Bar and, of course, the abolitionist stronghold of Lawrence, which is burned in film's cataclysmic centerpiece. They will also see familiar faces of Kansas City actors in the film, among them Kathleen Warfel, Dean Vivien, Donna Thomason, Michael Rapport, Cheryl Weaver and T. Max Graham (whose brief, scene-stealing appearance as a food-obsessed preacher earned several laughs). Watkins and Henley, who work to attract film production to the Kansas City region, said "Devil" made their jobs easier. "When I go to New York in November to try to sell Kansas locations to filmmakers, I'll be able to tell them to take a look at the new Ang Lee movie. That has a cachet that will get their attention," said Henley. Watkins described the film's location footage -- it was shot on both sides of the state line -- as "absolutely beautiful. It really showcases our landscape." At stake, they say, are millions in potential earnings from movie production. Watkins' office studied how the $35 million budget of "Ride With the Devil" was spent and determined that $21 million remained in Kansas City to pay local workers and to purchase goods and services. Good question! No, they are two completely different songs & are even in two different languages, hehe... "Per la gloria d'adorarvi" is an operatic piece Jewel learned at Interlochen. She's performed it only a few times over the past few years. It's an aria from the opera "Griselda" by Giovanni Bononcini. In Italian, of course. "Gloria" is a song Jewel wrote in Latin & up until recently was known as "Latin Song". This was written & recorded for the "Spirit" sessions but wasn't used. Jewel recently recorded it again for the holiday album & it will be included on that. I thought the operatic singing on "Amen" was Jewel's most engaging album vocal until I heard "Gloria". If you also like the end of "Amen" particularly, you'll be blown away by this! Hope that clears that up. Don't forget to enter the "Shiva Diva Doo Wop" contest at www.jeweljk.com. But it can get pretty inane meeting the press. Like when a reporter asked Jewel whether it's any different making a two-hour, 14-minute epic and a four-minute music video. "Hah?" she looked back in disbelief. The chanteuse fit right in with director Ang Lee and scriptwriter James Schamus, the team behind The Ice Storm. "I had nothing to do with the music, " Jewel says, adding, "I had my plate full trying to get my job done as an actress." Her character is a Southern widow giving aid and comfort to a gang of Southern gentleman irregulars waging guerrilla war on Northern sympathizers. It's her lot to bury more than one husband, something fate seems to resupply. Was she confident she could handle it? "No," she says succinctly. How'd she overcome her fears? "Ang." It is currently being readied for release. The video, titled "A Life Uncommon", features an hour of vintage archival footage of Jewel's life both on & off the road as well as four complete performances filmed earlier this year in Los Angeles at a private benefit concert for Higher Ground For Humanity. Interviews with those closest to Jewel reveal what her life is like "behind the scenes" & fans are sure to enjoy. The video is currently being scheduled for release to coincide with Jewel's forthcoming album in November & will be available in stores for the holiday season. I'll put the complete accurate "Sessions at West 54th Street" setlist on the setlist page at Jewel's website tomorrow. Just got back from NYC & will catalogue the details later today. I enjoyed chatting with many of you! What a great night! For everyone who would like to join us in cleaning our adopted beach this Saturday in South Amboy, NJ, the directions are below. Please plan to arrive around 10, as we will be going over instructions; passing out gloves, garbage bags, and data cards; and signing the liabability waiver (this is required per the NJ Adopt-A-Beach program rules). We'll start the cleaning at 10:30. We had a great time at the spring cleanup and I have no doubt this one will be just as much, if not more, fun! Afterwards, we will go out to lunch (probably Denny's) and then ?? something fun. If you're coming from far away, I can help you make arrangements to stay locally with an EDA. Here is the list of participants so far: Eric Montas, Sue & Jeff Harrison, Alice Estevez, Dennis Harris, Iris, Michelle, Abel Rosario, Johnny Wilson, Dan Stark (maybe), Leif (maybe), Rob & Tammy Campbell (maybe). If you're not on this list but planning to attend, please contact me at w1ggy2@aol.com. FLOYD: As for this obnoxious hurricane that threatens to mess up our day, we will play it by ear. If it's raining a little, we'll still have the cleanup Saturday, but if it's torrential rains and/or very high winds, we'll have to put it off - either until the next day (Sunday) or the following week. If everyone who is coming could send me their phone number, that would be helpful. Let's think positive and assume the 'cane will have passed by already or, even better, bypassed us altogether! So, without further adieu, here are the directions to "Angel Beach"...... GARDEN STATE PARKWAY NORTH: Exit into the Cheesequake Service area (it's near exit 122 and has a Mobil station). Go past the building with the restaraunts to the next stop sign. Take a left and an immediate right into the northern Commuter Parking Lot. Follow the directions below ** GARDEN STATE PARKWAY SOUTH: Take the express lanes. Exit into the Cheesequake Service area (after exit 123 - it has a Mobil Station). At the first stop sign, make a left and then another left into the northern Commuter Parking Lot. ** Go to the end of the Commuter lot and take a right onto Bordentown Avenue. Go through one stop light and one blinking light. At the second blinking light, make a left onto Broadway. Go one block to the Gulf Station and make a right onto John St. Cross the RR tracks and go to the next stop sign. Make a right onto Rosewell, which immediately becomes O'Leary Blvd. Go about 1,000 feet and make a left onto a dirt road. You'll see a boat club ahead to the left. Bear to the right and go through an iron "gate". That's it! FROM OLD BRIDGE: Take Route 9 North into S. Amboy. It runs into Main Street. At the 3rd light, take a right onto Broadway. Go through the town to John Street (Gulf Station on the corner) and make a left. Cross the RR tracks and go to the next stop sign. Make a right onto Rosewell, which immediately becomes O'Leary Blvd. Go about 1,000 feet and make a left onto a dirt road. You'll see a boat club ahead to the left. The cleanup lasts until 11am with EDA beach frivolity surely to follow :) We will be basically removing and catalouging items of trash using the implements given to us for that purpose. Once the "score-cards" and refuse is rounded up, we will count and compile a listing of the refuse collected to be of use for both scientific and lobbying purposes. I have also been informed that the cards turned in will also be a part of a raffle for participants involving some VERY WORTHWHILE prizes donated by various companies. If you have any questions about taking part in this day please reply to THIS address. If would like to volunteer to bring things for our post-cleanup BBQ email Jason at arunsun@rocketmail.com . The single, a newly recorded version of "Life Uncommon" features accompaniment by a small orchestra & choir conducted by Arif Marden. This remarkable recording took place during recent rehearsals for Jewel's "Sessions At West 54th Street" Christmas Special, which will be broadcast nationwide on PBS in December. All of Jewel's proceeds & a portion of record company proceeds will directly benefit Clearwater Project. Comprised of individuals with a vision to bring about positive change for the millions of people suffering from a lack of clean drinking water, the Clearwater Project seeks to fulfill their vision through: * Education and awareness programs aimed at teaching communities and individuals about their specific water problems and how these problems can be solved. * Bringing together like-minded individuals and building alliances with other organizations intent on creating positive changes for water health. * Providing relief and sustainable solutions to people in the form of simple and affordable technologies that can clean contaminated water and make it safe for drinking. The alarming decrease in availability of pure, safe water threatens the core of our existence. We cannot survive without the vital resource of water. The problem is now quite advanced in most impoverished areas, and in many of our rivers and oceans. Even in most of our cities we buy bottled water. The human being has a vital role in the stewardship of our earth and we must awaken more fully to our responsibility. Working together we can all address this problem effectively. As a matter of fact I sent that message twice. Ok so I admit that I have been very busy lately with school and everything and I don't even get to read half of the Jewel-Digests that I get. So that would explain me not getting Jade's message. Anyway The shirts are in my possession...boxed up and ready to be shipped. It has only been five weeks since the orders took place. Like any "business" deal I told everyone it could take 6 to 8 weeks to get their shirt. Shirts will be sent very soon...as early as tomorrow morning if i get to the post office on time. SO IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS..... Email me at jewels@purdue.edu This is the last time i will say that that is my email address. If you get an email from me at a different address it is because it is only temporary...I will have my purdue address for quite a while and i check it at least everyday. I'm getting bombarded here with questions about Jewel's New Years Eve concert (in Anchorage, Alaska) ticket details. I don't keep track of ticketing details information. It's always best to research these things locally. However, I can help a little, thanks to a friend who called last night from Anchorage & said the local papers have been advertising Jewel's New Years Eve show all week. According to the local papers, tickets go on sale at the Sullivan Theater box office on October 9th. I do know the theater holds 8000 people & Jewel's band will perform with her. All the other questions I'm getting, such as: Can I buy tickets online? Are ticket agencies carrying this show? What ticket agencies are carrying this show? Can I only buy tickets in Alaska? Where can I buy tickets locally here in Iowa? How can Europeans buy tickets? Can I phone charge tickets? What about Y2K in Alaska? j/k ;-) One simply answer: I don't know. For all the folks with these questions, I have a suggestion. Surely some of you technologically savvy EDAs can find the phone number & call the Sullivan Theater box office in Anchorage & ask them. Simply do this & then post the info for others. This could actually work. I know it sounds frightening, but I have confidence in you! ;-) Alan -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Mod Note: (At your service....) Sullivan Arena Tickets are sold through: http://www.carrstix.com/ Or over the phone at: Outside Anchorage 1-800-478-7328 (1-800-GR8-SEAT) But they don't know anything about the concert yet, so don't call: "The Rumor Mill... You'll easily be able to tune in on this via TV (both MTV & VH1 are carrying it) as well as radio & the Net. For a lot more information, you can educate yourself at "headline news" at Jewel's website (www.jeweljk.com) & www.netaid.org, the official NetAid website. Also, we now have plans for two upcoming online LIVE CHATS with Jewel. The first will take place on AOL on Monday, November 1st. The second will be done on the Alloy website on Monday November 8th. Mark your calendars! Exact timing details are not yet available, but you'll know when to join in with plenty of time to spare. Since it's a syndicated show, it can be on just about any station in your area, with a strong likelihood (but not guaranteed), that IF you get the show, it would be on your CBS, NBC, ABC, WB or UPN network affiliate, and the most likely broadcast times would NOT be during Prime Time. The weather was perfect and 13 EDAs showed up from NJ/NY, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts to free "Angel Beach" of trash and debris. We collected 30 bags of trash, including 190 plastic bottle caps, 170 plastic utensils, 173 straws, 283 glass bottles, 125 plastic food wrappers, 89 cans, lots of rope, several tires and a Teletubby! (La-La, for those interested :-) Once again, the cigarette butt count was surprisingly low at "only" 97. Afterwards, we decided to break with the "Denny's" tradition and try a new restaurant. Well, how could we NOT eat at a place called Big Ed's Barbeque when their parking lot is surrounded with PLYWOOD ANIMALS?!? In fact, as we were passing by, we had to slam on the brakes, nearly causing a six car EDA pileup because Woody mooed so much in the back seat after spotting the plywood barnyard menagerie! We swung by the Campbell's new house (the Campbell Inn #2?) and brought Rob, Tammy and the girls along for lunch. After filling up on delicious barbeque ribs, chicken and other non-plywood delicacies, we headed to Funmania to play (ride on) the Harley motorcycle games. Unfortunately, they were out of order, so we consoled ourselves by playing air hockey and the four player head-to-head racecar game instead, which Abel utterly dominated... Thanks to everyone who attended; it was a great day. The next cleanup of our New Jersey adopted beach will be in the spring. Thanks also to the West Coast EDAs who went to the cleanup in southern California. Great job, guys! There are many beach cleanups held across the United States over the next several weeks. To find one in your area, either email us at EDAFinfo@aol.com or go online: www.cmc-ocean.org/cleanupbro/index.php3 *** WINTER BLANKET AND CLOTHING DRIVE *** We are also looking into ways to collect and distribute much needed winter clothing and blankets in as many areas as possible. Anyone interested in helping with this program please email us at EDAFinfo@aol.com. *** FALL AND WINTER FOODBANK VOLUNTEERING *** With Thanksgiving and Christmas quickly approaching, people become more aware of the hunger problem. However, hunger organizations (foodbanks, soup kitchens and community pantries) often have TOO MANY volunteers during these two holiday weeks, and not enough help in October, early November and the weeks BETWEEN Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you'd like to learn more about hunger, take a few minutes and visit the Second Harvest Foodbank Network website at: www.secondharvest.org The EDAF has partnered with Second Harvest on many occasions, and will lend a hand in the coming months as well. (In the process, I noticed many transcriptions were missing on the lowend site which has also been updated.) So...now on both low-end & high-end versions of www.jeweljk.com, you can now find the real transcriptions to "Angel" (aka Cowboy Waltz) and "Does Anyone Believe In Love Anymore?" Enjoy! To Heather and any other list members who have defective JMerch items, including those purchased at the Jewel concerts this summer, below is what I posted on this issue in early August. Mike :-) ************ 8/3/99 Hi everyone :-) I just got off the phone with Mike at JMerch. (for new folks, that is the official Jewel Store on www.jeweljk.com) I called him to relate to him the number of Instant Messages and emails I've recently received either personally or through the list which were about defective merchandise either purchased online from JMerch or at a Jewel concert. Most were about the Spirit Tour book, which is a problem they know about. (It seems there have been many defective ones, including the one I received a few days ago...some "environmentally safe glues" just ain't doing the trick) Basically, he said that if you purchased something defective either through them online, mail order, or official Jewel merchandise at a Jewel concert, to please call them at their toll free number 877-295-3935 and they will make ammends (or you can email them at customerservice@jeweljk.com). The new take, recorded earlier this month during her taping for PBS performance series "Sessions At West 54th," will be released Oct. 12; proceeds from its sales are earmarked for the Clearwater Project, which works to increase access to clean drinking water for people around the world. The new version of the track, which originally appears on the Atlantic artist's latest album, "Spirit," features Jewel accompanied by an orchestra and choir conducted by noted producer/arranger Arif Mardin. Jewel's "Sessions..." appearance is slated to air across the U.S. beginning in late November. The performance is a special Christmas concert that will follow the Nov. 2 release of her new album, "Joy - A Holiday Collection." Produced by Mardin, "Joy" will include renditions of such holiday standards as "Silent Night," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," "Winter Wonderland," and "Ave Maria," as well as a gospel medley encompassing the spiritual standard "Go Tell It On The Mountain," Jewel's "Life Uncommon," and the Bette Midler tune "From A Distance." In addition, Jewel will perform Oct. 9 at the NetAid concert at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The three overlapping NetAid concerts (in New Jersey, London, and Geneva) will be simulcast around the world. The events aim to inspire action against extreme global poverty. Jewel also will join country legend Merle Haggard at his concert Oct. 2 at the Hilton Showroom in Las Vegas. The event, billed "Merle Haggard: For The Record," will be broadcast live on pay-per-view. Cheers, Alan Atlantic recording artist Jewel has announced the forthcoming release of a special benefit single in conjunction with her October 9th performance at NetAid, the live global musical event which is being staged as part of a long-term initiative to help eradicate extreme poverty. Due in stores on October 12th, the single will feature a newly recorded, previously unreleased live version of "Life Uncommon," a song from Jewel's current RIAA multi-platinum album, "SPIRIT." All of Jewel's proceeds from sales of the "Life Uncommon" single will directly benefit the Clearwater Project, a program of Higher Ground for Humanity - a non-profit organization founded by Jewel and her mother and manager, Nedra Carroll. Clearwater Project is working to bring about positive change for the millions of people around the world suffering from a lack of clean drinking water. This includes providing relief in the form of simple and affordable technologies for making contaminated water safe for drinking, as well as education and awareness programs and other initiatives. "The alarming decrease in availability of pure, safe water threatens the core of our existence," stated Jewel and Nedra Carroll. "We cannot survive without the vital resource of water, and the problem is now quite advanced in most impoverished areas. The human being has a vital role in the stewardship of our earth, and we must awaken more fully to our responsibility. Working together, we can all address this problem effectively. We are involved because something can be done." Jewel's new live version of "Life Uncommon" was recorded on September 14th, during the taping of her forthcoming appearance on the acclaimed PBS television series, "Sessions At West 54th." The song features Jewel accompanied by an orchestra and choir conducted by legendary producer and arranger Arif Mardin. Jewel's "Sessions..." appearance, slated to air nationwide beginning in late November, is a special Christmas concert which follows the November 2nd release of her new Atlantic album, "JOY - A HOLIDAY COLLECTION," produced by Mardin. On October 9th, Jewel will perform at Giants Stadium in New Jersey for NetAid. The three overlapping NetAid concerts (in New Jersey, London, and Geneva) will be simulcast around the world, bringing together the power of the Internet, the global reach of television and radio, and the live impact of world-renowned artists to inspire action against extreme poverty, one of the world's most serious problems. (Hi again! This may be mistaken on the "Sessions" airdate info. I was told it would probably be aired Christmas Night. Definitive airdate info will be on Jewel's website calendar. It will likely see multiple airings. - Alan)
