For those interested, here's some updates below. But first, I'd like to remind you about another great EDA resource website called "EDA ARTISTS". This site has links to many artists websites & tour date info for many San Diego artists including Joy Eden Harrison, Gregory Page, Steve Poltz, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan, Andres Condon, Elizabeth Hummel, to name a few. Bookmark this site at: http://thespis.com/crashboy/EDArtists/EDArtists.htm Although sometimes out of date, you can always use this site to get to a specific artists' site & more updated info. I'm not up on Steve Poltz's performing plans for January but you can find that info at the above site. Steve will be the support act for Jewel on the Australia/New Zealand & UK dates that I put up on Jewel's website. For those specifically interested in Cindy Lee Berryhill &/or Joy Eden Harrison, heres a general update on them. Cindy Lee Berryhill will soon begin recording her next studio album & as many of you know, she has a very infectious stockpile of "keyboard written" pop songs. This next album will be the full blown "Garage Orchestra-like studio treatment" of those songs. I think the list of songs being considered include "Antarctica", "Family Tree", "Aquamarine", "Follow The Sun", "Victorville Beach", "This Way Up" (written with Steve Poltz), Eileen's Eyes (written with Stew of The Negro Problem), "Witness" & a few other possibilities I can't remember at the moment. Not sure about "She Won't Even Try" (aka The Skip Song), although I love that tune! Since that song is based on a Beach Boys tape-loop, I'm not sure its being considered. I know Cindy Lee played it for Beach Boys avatar Brian Wilson, who said "That blew my mind". Also, I think she'll be recording in several different studios. I think Peter Buck (of REM) & Brian Wilson have both offered their studios among a few others that want to work with her. No release date yet on that. There's also an independant release from CLB of a January 1998 LRT duo gig with Renatta Bratt coming out soon. I think in the next month or two. I don't have current details on that but will find out. This will be lots of fun but that next studio album is definately going to be another delicious leap forward for CLB. I'm looking forward to this album more than any other 1999 release! You can catch CLB gigging around San Diego & Los Angeles. Check her site for current dates. For more info on CLB (including a message board she partakes in), go to: http://www.mwpsoft.com/clb/index.htm Now, on to Joy: The first CD pressings of Joy Eden Harrison's new album just came in a few days ago. The album is called "Unspoken". This will be publicly released in February or March on her new label Astarte Records which is officially up & running now. Lucky attendees of last summers Living Room Tour already know how great this album is from the pre-release cassettes & her live performances. I highly recommend it. This album is a cathartic release of pain & loss, but still makes me feel soooo good & continues to improve with every listen. Luscious jazz & blues vocals blended with wonderfully unique pop-tinged production & arrangement help from Cindy Lee Berryhill. Joy should have her website together by the third week of January. They will have merchandising set up and ready to go. She's thinking about making the CD available to fans via the website before the official release date. Her CD release party is at Java Joes is on the 26th of February and then touring begins. I'll get the dates & post when they are confirmed. In the meantime, you can learn more about Joy at her old website at: http://www.ojo.com/kk/joy/ Hope thats helpful to those interested. This is from The Times (sometime before Christmas methinks) where several critics choose their best albums of '98: "NIGEL WILLIAMSON ROCK'N'ROLL IS now in its forties but shows no signs of a mid-life crisis. Because no next big thing has emerged to succeed tired old Britpop, the release schedules have never been more diverse, making 1998 a classic year for albums. Great debuts came from Eagle-Eye Cherry with Desireless and Rufus Wainwright, very good ones came from Gomez with Bring It On and Ghostland. LPs still likely to be spinning into the next millennium include Natalie Merchant's Ophelia , the late Jeff Buckley's Sketches for My Sweetheart, the Drunk , Sinead Lohan's No Mermaid , Billy Bragg's timeless Mermaid Avenue , PJ Harvey's Is This Desire? , Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs and leading them all, Spirit , the second album from Jewel, the best female singer-songwriter since Joni Mitchell. Yet paradoxically in such a strong year the only perfect ten goes to Bob Dylan's long-awaited and legendary Live 1966: The Royal Albert Hall Concert , quite simply one of the defining moments in modern cultural history. " This is from E! Online "A Gem Dandy... Just when everything seemed right with the world, it turns out Jewel isn't simply another dippy hippie chick. Despite lyrics like "What's simple is true" (attention Jewel: the dream where I bag Bridget Fonda with a croquet mallet is exquisitely simple, but as far as I can tell you, not true), the former street urchin seems to have grown a brain. In the December 24 Rolling Stone, Jewel discusses quantum physics and intelligently rebuffs her critics. "I [keep] trying to figure out why people in the press thought I was stupid," she says. "I've noticed a belief [among the press] that optimism stems from naïveté. I believe optimism is a choice. Cynicism isn't smarter, it's just safer." Happily, Profound Jewel gives way to Dopey Jewel a short time later, setting the world's axis straight again. "[Jelly Bellys] should be its own food group," she muses. "All those flavors and colors. Then you start combining them--cream soda with a cherry on top, or a juicy pear with a strawberry." Ahhhh. That's better. And a happy 1999 to all. Enjoy Elizabeth's message, MrBB Elizabeth Hummel Update January 4, 1999 Happy New Year! This one's a good one, I can feel it like a Santa Ana sweeping in from the desert. First, I want to inform those of you who are or who have friends in the vicinity of San Diego that I'm performing this weekend. Saturday, January 9th - 9:00 PM at Java Joe's in Ocean Beach, San Diego (phone at JJs: 523-0356) $5 cover 1998 was, like most years, a mixed sort of year. I wrote about 28 new songs, performed in the Lilith Fair, recorded a song to be in a movie ("Trapped" by independent film director Robert Mann), toured the coast a number of times, extended the Living Room Tour concept to play in other alternative spaces, (a barn, a counseling center, a hair salon coming up!) The brilliant Ms. Jen Hitchcock featured me talking about these shows in the December issue of "Girlfriends", a national magazine out of San Francisco. I'm half-way done with a new CD recorded in San Francisco, the city to fall in love with. Besides music, I ate good food, saw beautiful countryside, communed with friends and family, adored the two dogs in my life, swam in two lakes, read some great books, had interesting dreams. On the other side of life, I was sans a home for 4 months, totaled my car, and then was sick for almost two months. While I do not recommend homelessness, (or car-lessness in Southern California) some good insights and songs did result. Riding the bus in San Diego, I saw lots of real homeless people--people who don't have any way out of it, people with chemical imbalances, alcohol problems, or just people who had one too many rugs pulled from underneath them. Some of them were creepy, some of them were nice, ranging along the same spectrum as people much better off. Now--I have a home again, a jeep, and I'm finally recovered from being sick. I'm excited about this next year, and hope to see lots of you soon. You used to milk the cow before breakfast and had no running water. Was that as, er, idyllic as it sounds? J: People tend to think of it as some kind of hippy existence. It wasn't. It was just the way things were. My grandfather was one of the last true pioneers. He settled in Alaska before it was even a state. D: Weren't you brought up as a Mormon? J: To be honest, the only time it came up was when my parents got divorced. D: You've often said that the divorce was the reason you started writing songs. J: Yeah, music became my best friend. D: Is music still how you deal with pain? J: My words don't always come from bad things. Life is very comfortable at the moment. I have a nice house. I don't have to worry about buying groceries...But there are so many other things to write about. D: Like what? J: How life seduces me. About how I've gone from being homeless to being a millionaire in just a couple of years. D: Do you feel guilty about that? J: All I am is a body and soul. Just like the other guys I used to know when I was homeless. But now I'm here and they're still homeless. It doesn't seem fair. D: You've just finished your first major acting role opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Ang Lee's new film, Ride With The Devil. What was that like? J: Really enjoyable. I was ready for a new challenge. It was a pretty difficult first role, too. I play an 18-year-old mother in the American Civil War. It's all about raw, tense emotion - tears, heartbreak, redemption... D: Sounds like a barrel of laughs. Did you enjoy pretending to be someone else? J: I didn't really see acting like that. I saw it as me being me, but being a very specific bit of me. I was narrowing the focus on my life. D: You are a pretty major celebrity in the States now. J: Yeah, I'm getting used to it. I do get hassled in the street sometimes and I have had a couple of stalkers. It was weird. I felt like I'd been betrayed by God. I was thinking, 'I'm a nice kid. Why is this happening to me?' D: Okay, Jewel, thanks for your time. J: Is that it? D: Yeah. J: Jeez, I thought this was going to be about make-up and nail varnish. Danny Scott ------------------------------------------- Chris. Streaming audio built in with animated poetry & drawings will all be coming soon. It will be a much more interactive site! I'm putting up a few new dates in the next few days as well. Check the calendar for those. And I'm well aware that many of you are anxious to know more about Higher Ground For Humanity. Soon, soon, soon! We'll soon have a video up on the site you can watch & learn what it is, what goals we have & how best you can help. The first installment of the in depth "Jewel History" will soon be up as well. The "condensed bio" up on the biography page now is just a tiny fraction of what's in store. You'll discover that every unauthorized biography out there is chock full of misinformation & fabrication. It will be the first & only accurate Jewel biography. We also plan to have more audio & video eventually & are currently discussing putting up performances in RealVideo for everyone's viewing pleasure. Many have asked me about putting up the recent Vatican performance. We're discussing that. Also, I know all you Jewel site designers out there are linked to us. We like that! THANK YOU! So we are currently designing a banner link specifically for you. I'll let you know when it's ready & I'll ask you to please remove any "borrowed" banners from the site & use this one. :-) Thanks & keep checking in at www.jeweljk.com We're all back to work & will be getting lots of good things up for you over the course of the next month or so. (People Magazine) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk I was browsing through People's online site at http://www.pathfinder.com/people looking for Jewel stuff, and came across their feature stories: Divas. I thought, 'Hey, Jewel might be included'.. Guess what? She is.. She also shares the cover of this week's real issue.. Here's what I got from the online feature: To Have, and Have a Lot They get it all - manor homes, designer clothes, devoted minions, and spellbound fans - for a song Ask Celine Dion if she's a pop diva and she'll modestly answer no, even though she happens to be the bestselling singer in America just now. "Diva," says Dion, "makes me think of the old, glorious movie stars." But she has to admit, "It sounds good to me. I love it. Diva." After all, diva, Italian for "goddess," has long been associated with heavenly songbirds, golden throats and exotic plumage. None was more spellbinding than the imperious Greek soprano Maria Callas, who dominated opera stages in the '50s and cowed everyone around her with terrifying temper tantrums. Then came pop music's pampered princesses, a new class of American diva -- brassy, indomitable and weighted with foot-long false eyelashes. There was Diana Ross with her slinky sexiness and bright-tinsel voice; the all-powerful Barbra Streisand, who, like every other singer of her time, recorded "Send in the Clowns," but only after asking Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim to rewrite the lyrics to suit her; and soul queen Aretha Franklin, who concluded last April's VH1 Divas Live concert by stretching out a gospel number to 17 minutes.(The producers eventually turned off the cameras.) Of course, diva can be shorthand for pain in the neck. "But you should take it as a compliment," says Franklin, now 56. "Being a diva comprises musicality, a theatrical element and a certain carriage." By that definition, say hello to the latest wave of pop divas: Celine Dion, 30; Whitney Houston, 35; Mariah Carey, 29; Madonna, the old-timer at 40; Janet Jackson, 32; Shania Twain, 33; and Jewel, 24 -- with divas-in-waiting Brandy, 19; Monica, 18; and LeAnn Rimes, 16, warbling in the wings. All certainly have the requisite lung power. Houston, whose Top 20 album My Love Is Your Love marks her first studio release in eight years, can rattle roof beams, Carey skips octaves with the ease of a kindergartner at jump rope, and Dion (who, like Carey and Twain, sang with Franklin on VH1) belts out "My Heart Will Go On," the Oscar-winning Titanic theme, with chest-thumping majesty. And, with all due R-E-S-P-E-C-T to Aretha and company, these superdivas are richer and wield more power. True, some of their pre-MTV forebears dabbled in movies, but were they also best-selling authors à la Jewel? Did they, like Madonna, run their own record labels? Even divette Brandy has her own TV show. Beyond having industrial-strength lungs, today's pop divas can be as demanding as they are pampered and -- with their vast earnings -- indulgent. (Celine keeps 500 pairs of shoes in a 300-square-foot closet.) The public worships them: Together, these divas have sold some 210 million albums in the United States alone, astonishing by anyone's standards. (Dion sold 60 million albums worldwide in only 30 months.) Last November, Jewel's Spirit debuted at No. 3, with Carey's greatest-hits package #1's and Dion's These Are Special Times just behind. The Grammy nominations, announced Jan. 5, give the divas their due: six for Twain, five for Madonna and four for Dion (Houston and Jewel's new albums were released too late for consideration). So how do these rags-to-riches sirens spend their time? What do they splurge on? What do they think of each other? And by the way, how are their love lives? In Celine Dion's case, no album title was ever more fitting than These Are Special Times. She grew up one of 14 children in a small town in Quebec, but scrimping is a thing of the past. "I don't drink," says Dion. "I don't smoke. I shop." She and her husband, manager Rene Angelil, who's in his mid-50s, recently built a $10 million, 10-bedroom turreted mansion in Jupiter, Fla., equipped with fountains, waterfalls and 33 television sets. They also plan to build an English-style manor on a golf club they bought recently near Montreal, retaining two 18-hole courses to help them unwind (she has a 24 handicap). When Dion told David Letterman last November that she had a personal putting green, he howled, "Oh, stop! When I go bowling, I've got to rent shoes." Jewel, who in 1996 bought a reportedly $1.3 million, four-bedroom house in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., with the proceeds of her first album, is still adjusting to the concept of living so large. "Being a homeowner, especially a nice home homeowner, that's pretty weird," says the singer, who grew up Jewel Kilcher in a homestead, toiletless cabin in Homer, Alaska. She's come a long way. Because she hates to buy clothes ("If I only have six hours off, why on earth would I drag myself to a mall?"), she retains a personal shopper to keep her in precious Prada and Gucci. For her acting debut in the Civil War movie Ride with the Devil, due this fall, she learned to rope cattle. She has also coralled her share of heartthrobs, including Sean Penn (before he married Robin Wright in '96) and now actor Christopher Douglas. But at heart, Jewel is a flower child and poet (her collection, A Night Without Armor, remains a bestseller after eight months). Last fall at a benefit in New York she charmed many in the audience when, realizing her nails were too long to strum her guitar, she asked if anyone could lend her a nail clipper. (Someone did.) Told by a reporter she was part of a story for PEOPLE that included Dion and Carey, she marveled, "Wow, I'm in that group?" Welcome to the club, only don't expect a lotta lunch dates. Jewel has met Celine, whom she describes as "one of the nicest people," but these women don't pal around much. Blame it on their schedules, their managers or maybe (just maybe) diva pride. It's from Perimeter magazine, a free Winnipeg entertainment newspaper. ___________________ ___________________ In Defence of Niceness by Polly Washburn Jewel Spirit B+ On Pieces of You, Jewel sang, "Please be careful of me, because I'm sensitive." On Spirit, she's still sensititve, but she's stronger. She's healed herself and she's out to heal the world. Her message has moved beyond herself: "Be careful of each other," she pleads. Jewel now sounds like she wants to be a songwriter more than a pop star. While sometimes crossing over to pop, her music is folk for the late 90's. Jewel's also a kind of newage Amy Grant. Instead of Christianity, she preaches non-denominational universal love: "We are God's eyes, God's hands, God's mind." In the CD booklet, she proclaims, "We are loved beyond our ability to comprehend." Wile Alanis, Tori, Fiona et al. are are still bitter and biting, Jewel is preaching a new way. "In the end, kindness is all that matter," she croons, "It's nothing without love, love, love," she reminds us on the opening track, Deep Water. The first single off the album, "Hands," is the anthem for her movement. "If I could tell the world just one thing, it would be that we're all ok." The other love song, "What's Simple Is True," is perfect for Winnipeggers in love, "Turn to me with frozen lips, your hands are icy cold ... Old man winter be our friend." Several songs yearn for things just out of reach. "Enter from the East" is a sensual prayer. "Barcelona" pleads "Hold me, release me, show me the meaning of mercy, let my fly." "Absence of Fear," the album closer, speaks of the hunger of wanting and needing to feel safe. There are weak moments to the album. The music on "Kiss the Flame" is lyrical, but the lyrics themselves are out of her teenage notebook. "Fat Boy" is hard to listen to unless you're still a stumbling adolescent yourself. "Jupiter," "Life Uncommon" and "Do You" are forgettable, but pleasant enough. "Innocence can't be lost, it just needs to be maintained." If you're looking to maintain your faith in love and kindness, Jewel can help. For people already on her wavelength, Jewel is an angel, singing sweet words of truth. But for non-fans, her voice is not always strong enough to win converts. It's easy just to let the melodies flow right over you as background music. But if she grows as much as she seems to have between her last album and this one, her next album may include a voice that can save more souls." ____________________________________________________________________________ __________________ I hate to bash an article that overall says Spirit is good, but all the misquoting of lyrics doesn't instill me with the most faith in the writer. I'm getting tons of questions lately & have not been replying, because as I previously posted, I will address most EDA questions on Jewel's official website. The one thing still not addressed on the site is the rescheduling of Jewel's Charlie Rose show appearance postponed from late last year. She will be doing this excellent PBS interview show the week of January 18th, but we do not have the exact day yet. Keep checking the website calendar for updates on things like this. In the meantime, here is a list of important questions that I've received recently & which are answered on the website: When is the "Down So Long" video being filmed? When is the UK "Down So Long" single REALLY being released? What bonus tracks will be on the UK single? Is Jewel going to be featured on the "Anywhere But Here" soundtrack? What Jewel tour dates are confirmed? What new TV & media appearances are scheduled? Is Jewel going to be on The Conan Obrien Show soon? Is MTV doing a BIOrhythm show on Jewel & when? Is Jewel's 3rd album going to be a country album? Does Jewel go topless in "Ride With The Devil"? Did Jewel & Eddie Vedder collaborate on recordings for a Tim Robbins film? When will Higher Ground For Humanity be unveiled? I've addressed ALL these questions & more on the official Jewel Website at www.jeweljk.com. Hint: Check the calendar (both current & future) & the "rumor & truth" pages for all the latest information. We update these pages quite often. And finally, I'd just like to give a plug for our friend Joy Eden Harrison. Her wonderful new CD is done. The title is "Unspoken" & it will be released next month on her new independent label Astarte Records. She has distribution in stores but will also have web-ordering available via her new website & I'll keep you informed on that once its up & running. I absolutely LOVE this album & I think many of you would as well. For those who don't know Joy, she's a jazz singer & songwriter who also spent many a night playing at The InnerChange during the same time Jewel was there on Thursday nights. She's one of the many talented musicians to emerge from the San Diego songwriter scene. She's since relocated to Chicago & was a featured artist on last summers Living Room Tour, where she captivated all who attended. Her new album features all new original material & features many San Diego musicians & singers familiar to many EDAs & was produced by the amazing Cindy Lee Berryhill. I highly recommend this album & know many of you would love it! OK. Enough off topic info.... Please visit us at www.jeweljk.com & you will find the answers to ALL the above mentioned questions. We're still getting a few bugs out of the site & a lot more content will be up soon. Stick around & enjoy! We were given a book called the "Career Handbook" and in it is an interview with Jewel. Here it is: Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk JEWEL Diamond in the Rough: Jewel talks about paying the price for art and career How did you go about getting the industry's attention? I didn't. I was singing in a coffee shop and got a very strong local following going, which ultimately resulted in a buzz sort of starting. Without my knowledge, record labels started coming down. The idea of [sending out] demo tapes seemed absolutely impossible. And actually, the more I learn about it, the more I think I'm right. When you send tapes to A&R people they don't necessarily get listened to. Were you surprised how quickly you gained success? It took three years on my first album. It took about a year-and-a-half for the first song to become even somewhat successful. When the song first came out, radio said it was unlistenable and unplayable. I actually didn't think it would be successful anyway. My goal was to model myself after the career of someone like Neil Young, who doesn't depend on radio success so much as and ardent following. That way he always had his creative freedom. So I just made an album that I thought would win me singer/songwriter fans, and just let them know who I was as a person, as a kid, really. They kind of accidentally became radio hits. Luckily, I had those three years to prepare for having a hit and dealing with fame. When the labels came calling, how did you go about finding management and legal representation? That all sort of just came to me. There was a band in San Diego named Rust and they had a manager named Inga, who was a first-time manager, and they said, "You got to check this girl out." Her car broke down, but she knew this secretary at Atlantic Records. So the secretary drove her down, and they both fell in love with me. The secretary ended up being my A&R Rep and Inga helped me decide on a label. My mom was also involved as my other manager, so I really had somebody on my side. For lawyers, we interviewed several and saw who else they handled. I'm a very instinctual person, I just go off a vibe. In a short time, you've gone from the relatively relaxed schedule of surfing and playing coffee houses to major tour and TV commitments. How does that change your life? How doesn't it, really? My life is completely different. I would say that touring 40 cities every 30 days and sleeping three hours a night for three years has been better than waitressing. It's very easy to start feeling sorry for myself because I never sleep, but I do feel very lucky for the chance I've been given, and I've never wanted to take it for granted because I'll end up living in my car again. Do you worry that this may all end tomorrow and you'll need something to fall back on? I did for a long time. You know, if you are really poor, its hard to come to grips with the fact that it might not be that way forever. The tendency is to kind of squirrel everything away and keep saving. I've always been smart with money and very involved in the business, I think its something everybody should do. I think its a very terrible attitude when artists think business compromises art because if you're not going to have a hands-on and creative approach to it, you're going to be controlled by it, and then it will be compromising. As far as falling back on something, this is all I wanted with my life. I was willing to die to do something that I loved. I was unwilling to live life without passion. We cannot continue to compromise our pride and our health just to survive. We have to live with passion. That's why I lived in my car. My goal was never to be famous. My real blessing is that I get to do what I love everyday and make a living at it. What sort of things should artists be aware of business-wise? Just stay in touch with your money. I see a lot of artists, as cliche as it sounds, getting money and sort of spending it immediately. Or getting one hit, or one near-hit, and thinking they don't have to work or do publicity or tour. I'm not a terribly cynical person, but don't trust anybody too much, always look into matters for yourself. When people know you're intelligent and involved in the business, they generally won't try to pull things on you. But almost everybody I've ever worked with has some sort of ulterior motive. It's just the way life is, don't take it personally or get disillusioned by it. What's the best piece of advice you ever got? I think that some good advice I was given was that the record label can be your friend, they're not an enemy. These people are really working late and busting their backs for you. The Japan tour date venues & a few miscellaneous additions to Jewel's website calendar will be up soon. Check it periodically for updates at www.jeweljk.com. I noticed two international JMerch order complaints on the list recently & I forwarded both to the JMerch office. They are doing excellent work with the countless orders that have come in over the past few months, but on rare occasions, problems can occur. They want EVERY JMerch customer happy, so if you have a problem with your order, simply call them toll free & they will correct it. (If you can't call toll free, email me & I'll help you by forwarding your complaint to the JMerch office.) If youre exstatically happy, feel free to write me & I'll forward that as well. And finally, heres an update on Cindy Lee Berryhill's soon to be released "Living Room 16" CD (aka "LR16"). This limited edition, signed CD will soon be available via mail order in North America. It will also have regular (non-signed) European retail distribution in stores a few months afterwards (this March probably). This particular January 1998 recording was a special one-off duo performance in San Francisco where CLB was accompanied by her previous Garage Orchestra cellist Renata Bratt. The title, "LR16" is in reference to this gig being the 16th gig on the legendary Living Room Tour. All CLB fans will no doubt love this CD & its a delicious taste of the Living Room Tour for those interested in this EDA inspired phenomenon. She'll also be recording a full blown studio album later this year, but the LR16 CD should be available for web or mail ordering in the next month or so. I'll definitely post info when its available. It's a civil war drama in which she stars as the love interest of two friends, played by Tobey Maguire and Skeet Ulrich. Rumors abound that Jewel proved to be a handful even for the soft spoken Asian director Ang Lee. Maguire admits "the first week of the shoot was a bit tense because Jewel had never been on a movie set. She was clearly not in her element and was frustrated," recalls the star of Pleasantville and The Ice Storm. "Once she felt more secure in front of the camera, Ride With the Devil was just like any other movie shoot. "I know how Jewel felt. It took me four movies before I knew what was expected of me. She's a much quicker learner." Jewel's roping skills will come in handy now that she's dating Chris Douglas, a former daytime soap opera actor who gave up acting to become a rodeo cowboy. Spirit is full of simple tunes, played superbly, and sung with the voice of an Alaskan angel, albeit one that's certainly lived a little. If your hi-fi's worth its name then Jewel's vocals on tracks such as Fat Boy and the stunning Deep Water should sit right at the heart of the soundstage and sound both dramatic and fullbodied. Her performance is one of simple beauty, but with undercurrents of irony and worldliness that becomes obvious on a system that possesses sufficient expression to convey the subtle intonations in her voice and lyrics. ------------------------------------------ Chris. -- Jewel, Pieces Of UK - http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~cmgroves/Jewel From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Jan 21 05:46:09 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id FAA28022 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 21 Jan 1999 05:45:54 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199901211045.FAA28022@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: ABershaw@aol.com Date: 19 Jan 99 22:05:54 -0800 Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-Higher Ground For Humanity Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, The following post is for the benefit of those without web access & for those who've yet to visit the website. If you can, soon visit the HGH page on the site & I know many of you will be fascinated & want to participate in the amazing plans for the future. Your interest in HGH is very appreciated & information will begin flowing soon. Here's Lenedra's message for now. Best wishes, MrBB In 1993, before beginning her musical career, Jewel and I had a series of important discussions that clarified our mutual desire to make a difference. These discussions united us in a creative partnership to be of service to humanity and laid the foundation for the development of Jewel's career. Our partnership encompasses the philosophical, ethical, and spiritual covenant that is an integral part of our lives and work. Higher Ground for Humanity (HGH) is the non-profit, humanitarian foundation that has grown out of our partnership. In the spirit of giving back to the global community which provides us with such abundance, we choose to advocate values and principles that improve the human condition and foster the positive spiritual evolution of human awareness and action. We commit ourselves to inspiring, supporting and empowering new possibilities for humanity. In order to identify and develop these possibilities, I established Higher Ground for Humanity (HGH). HGH's vision is to facilitate the ongoing discovery of what it means to be human in the highest sense ... and how to be that. I feel that the opportunity of our times is for each one of us to understand, at a very personal level, that we can have a profound impact on the world in which we live. The greatest possibilities for the transformation of the challenges that face our world exist in the fabric of our lives. If we can learn to become our prayers and hopes, expressing them in our daily interactions, then together we can create a more peaceful and loving world. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, Well, its obvious to me from my email flow, that the #1 question today is in the subject of this post. With unveilings happening quite a bit this week, one major unveiling occurred last night as Jewel debuted her new touring band on Conan O'Brien. I'm sure most of you recognized Steve Poltz on acoustic guitar, but are curious who the other musicians are in Jewel's new Spirit Tour Band. I'm not extremely knowledgeable about all the guys, but I do recall some previous work by each of them. So, here's some general information about Jewel's newest musicians: Steve George- Keyboards You may recognize Steve's name as he was one of the creative forces behind the band Mr. Mister. His credit list is extremely long & he's worked on countless sessions as both keyboardist & background vocalist. He was Kenny Loggins musical director for several years as well as a player on albums by Bela Fleck & The Flecktones and Elvis Costello. Doug Pettibone- Lead Guitar Doug is a well respected session guitarist & has worked with many "alternative country" artists including Nashville's Joy Lynn White. (I'm not personally familiar with Doug & since I'm writing this post from my own memory, I can't fill you in much more on his career. Perhaps someone can websearch him & educate us all more.) Tony Hall- Bass Tony has been featured on many albums, on both bass & guitar. He turns up on a lot of New Orleans related recordings. The ones that immediately come to mind are Harry Conick Jr, Daniel Lanois & most memorable to me personally--The Neville Brothers. Brady Blade- Drums Brady Blade will be familiar to many of you on recordings by Chris Whitley, Steve Earle, Victoria Williams & one of Jewel's favorites: Emmy Lou Harris. Steve Poltz- acoustic guitar Steve should be familiar to all EDAs as the co-founder of The Rugburns, his solo work as well as being Jewel's most frequent songwriting collaborator. (He'll also be the support act on the Australia, Japan & UK dates already posted on Jewel's website) And there ya have it. Seating in sections loosely corresponds to the comparable price locations at the original MSG site ($100 seats are in the 100 section in the front, and so on). I received a post card stating that the venue was moved to "better accomodate the acoustic nature of the concert." Call me a cynic, but with the radio advertisements and accelerated radio giveaways (I think it was Z100 - 100.3 FM I was listening to) I think they undersold the concert and are attempting to save face. Anyway, it should be fun, nonetheless, and I'll be there, so I hope it's a good concert. New Management For Jewel Jewel has a new manager. Nedra Carroll, mother of Jewel, tells Billboard Bulletin that she has stepped back from managing the day-to-day operations of the singer/songwriter in order to focus on "the longer-term development of her career," including her published writings and acting projects. Carroll says she will continue to be the primary liaison with Jewel's label, Atlantic Records. A new manager, Julie Agrati, was brought in Jan. 1. The news comes amid the pending $10 million breach-of-contract lawsuit filed by Jewel's previous manager, Inga Vainshtein, against the singer and Carroll. Carroll declined to comment on the suit. Jewel's first book of poetry, "A Night Without Armor," has been a best-seller for HarperCollins, while her sophomore Atlantic album, "Spirit," is No. 10 on The Billboard 200. These are frequently less-established organizations that may have difficulty getting traditional funding. It's from Maxim magazine, and while giving a caustic review they still managed to give it three stars out of five. "This 24-year-old from Bum Scratch, Alaska, is second only to Alanis Morissette in the 'unfeasibly large numbers of debut albums sold' stakes - ten million and counting so far. Unlike Alanis, though, Jewel's second album follows faithfully the blueprint of her debut. She probably thinks the combination of from-the-heart vocals, acoustic guitar and soft rock arrangements is a soundtrack for '90s America. I know that barely a handful of people turned up for some Jewel's gigs in the UK on her last tour and I'm now thinking that this may happen again. If anyone went to the Shepard's Bush Empire gig last time around waht was the size of the crowd like? The Albert Hall has a capacity of a few thousand so if ticket sales are like what happened last time, the concert might have a bit of an empty feeling. Judging from www.aloud.com, the London show seems to be selling particularly well, as its the 13th top seller on their top 20 list, with shows selling less last week already sold out. Finally, for those Irish and UK EDA's expecting the Jewel single out today, as was the initial date, it'll not be out until March, according to the official website. If you are a San Diegan and you get the paper, there's also a picture of Jewel w/ Nedra. JEWEL MANAGING VERY WELL Jewel does not have a new manager, contrary to recently published reports in The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard magazine's on-line Daily Music Update. Both reported that Jewel would now be managed by Julie Agrati, not Jewel's mother, Nedra Carroll. Not so, says Carroll, who co-managed her daughter's early career from 1996 until early last year, when she became Jewel's sole manager. "It was misinterpreted by Billboard," Carroll said Monday from her San Diego office. "They just made some assumptions about management after speaking with me very briefly. They had heard something was happening, and were going to say something less accurate than what they ended up saying after they spoke to me." The Hollywood Reporter apparently based its story on the one in Billboard- without giving credit- but mangled several additional facts in the process. "The major point is Julie will not be Jewel's manager or co-manager," Carroll said. "Julie will operate more as a chief operations officer of daily operations. I'm still remaining as Jewel's manager, but I'm moving more into the planning and strategy of her long-term career and business." Agrati is a San Diego resident who previously worked as a concert booking agent and managed several rock bands, Carroll said. She has been working with Jewel and Carroll since the beginning of the month. As for Jewel's world tour, Carroll predicted a San Diego concert was likely in July. *** ~Jenny Kookybaka Falling Star Angel (Formally known as Sugar High Angel) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed Jan 27 23:24:51 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id XAA27922 for jewel-news-outgoing; Wed, 27 Jan 1999 23:24:19 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199901280424.XAA27922@smoe.org> Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 21:15:58 -0500 From: Courtney M Gordon To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: Upcoming Jewel radio appearance in Michigan Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Dear angels, I heard from a friend of mine that Jewel is going to have an interview on Saturday (dunt know time) on the Flint, MI station WWCK105.5 I dunno what time or if this is true, but I thought i'd share it with yall anyways. http://www.wwck.com/wwck/index.htm have a great day! love and such Courtney - the Eve 6 angel [J-News Moderator: I couldn't confirm this on the website... YES, the Australian MTV program called "Jewel-TV" scheduled to air on 22/2/99 @ 10:00pm is the historical day of November 17th, 1998 when The EDAs infiltrated MTV headquarters in NYC. The day "Spirit" was released. The entire studio was filled with EDAs. You'll spot lots of charachters throughout the program including a dramatic cameo by me, but I keep missing it when I blink... However, several notorious EDAs well known in list lore get camera time including the mysterious Dennis Harris who few have seen but all who have remember! ;-) He usually doesn't even show up on film & some claim he has no reflection!! But there he is! Which one is he? I'm not telling! OK. A Hint. He wasn't allowed to ask any of the questions. (Although some claim while in the room surrounded by EDAs & Jewel, he was one of the phone in questions via electronic ventriloquism. ;-) The EDAFoundation was well represented by W1ggy Amy who elicited an answer from Jewel directly relating to her perceptions & hopes for The EDAs. And off camera prior to the show, a bunch of us had lunch with Meg, the listmember who certainly had the most interesting day. She began the day as a happy go lucky Jewel-TV ticket winner & wound up BEING JEWEL during the pre show camera run throughs, hehehe... Anyway...Sang's original post below with the repeat scheduling details for this program. Also "Hey Hey Its Saturday" on 27/2/99. Which reminds me.....Is there an EDA who could send me a Hi Fi stereo VHS copy of HHIS after it airs? Please drop me a line if you can. Enjoy "Jewel-TV" and the tour! Despite a stellar lineup, Monday's Women in Music concert was hurt by poor ticket sales, which forced the show to move from Madison Square Garden's 20,000-seat arena to its smaller Theater at MSG. That twist of fate transformed what almost certainly would have been a concert disaster into an intimate evening of music that sampled some of their best female voices of the last 40 years. Can you picture diminutive Janis Ian singing "At Seventeen" alone on the giant Garden stage with a small-bodied acoustic six-string? She would have been a speck. That same woman in the Theater was a musical spectacle who sizzled. Ian was one of the surprises of this estrogen power event that also featured Jewel, Paula Cole and Phoebe Snow, to name a few. Even though she's 47, Ian was all punk and spunk as she worked her three-song set, which included "At Seventeen" and "A Good Day to Die," which featured an over-the-top extended folk-funk guitar solo. Each star hit the stage running in an attempt to dazzle the audience from the first note. Some were more successful than others. Judy Collins' vocals on the folk ballads "Someday Soon" and "Both Sides Now" were crisp and spine-chilling, yet her ode to her home state, Colorado, was a major yawn. All the ladies wore black. Jewel looked busty in a spaghetti-strap slip top. Collins was majestic in a flowing, cape-cut jacket. Snow was elegant in a stretch outfit. And then there was Cole, who wore a fringed buckskin squaw dress. Under the spotlights, that dress was fashion suicide - until Cole made the fringe come alive, whipping it as she danced wildly to her own tunes. The movie joke "I'll have what she's having" seemed appropriate as Cole wailed through her brief set, delivering vocals with a panting, orgasmic style. Less homogenous than Lilith Fair, Women in Music featured folk legend Odetta early in the show and Snow late. Snow easily nabbed kudos as the top performance of the evening. She started slowly, with "Poetry Man." But it was in her final number, "Piece of My Heart," that she shook the house. She said, "My friends said it's a mistake to sing this song, but I want to do it." Sure, the selection - closely associated with Janis Joplin - was a major risk, but Snow met the challenge by emulating Joplin's passionate delivery and took the tune higher with a power 'n' glory gospel attack. Her rendition was magnificent. One would think that headliner Jewel would have been top dog in this yard, but Snow's was a tough act to follow. Jewel was allotted slightly more stage time, letting her do material from "Pieces of You" and her recent "Spirit" CDs. Her coffeehouse vocals ranged from a pretty soprano to a twangy alto to yodeling. She was at her best for a pair of songs from "Spirit": "Deep Water," where she reminded us "it's nothing without love," and "Hands," where the lesson is "in the end, only kindness matters." The History of Women in Music The Theater at Madison Square Garden, New York, Jan. 25, 1999 With an eclectic lineup ranging from the folk blues of Odetta to radio's best friend Jewel, the evening had the makings of historic proportions. Billed as "1960-1999: The History of Women in Music," the concert was organized for the benefit of Zero Population Growth and the Turner/Fonda Project, which aims to improve access to family planning information and services. But, as impressive as the lineup -- eight women in all -- sounded on paper, the affair was, by and large, a matter of endurance, its rare moments of beauty thrown off balance by frustrating displays of cringe-inducing mediocrity. Highlights included the rise and fall of Odetta's voice, retro-country wonder Mandy Barnett, and the lyrical sincerity of Jewel. Bringing it all down was a bad sound mix, high-school talent show lighting, Janis Ian's pseudo-Ani DiFranco, bust-out-guitar playing, Paula Cole's masturbation scene and Helen Reddy's Japanese restaurant entertainment. Odetta, arguably the only true legend in the house, was a stunner. It was almost unfair that she opened because it set a towering standard for the others to reach. The high point of her set was Mama and Papa Yancy's "Ain't It Hard Lord." Odetta rolled up her sleeves and, with one hand on her hip, got down to business. After fifty years of performing, Odetta remains a glorious and spiritual force. Young country newcomer Mandy Barnett had the most to prove at her first New York gig, and she did not disappoint. With her nine-piece band commanding the stage, Mandy eased into Porter Wagoner's "Trademark," the toe-tapping "Ever True Evermore," and "I've Got a Right To Cry." Leaning toward old-school country and conjuring up images of Patsy Cline, Barnett's voice was astonishing in its depth and clarity and heralded a promising career. Non-Jewel fans force-fed her music by radio might think it was sacrilegious that she was the headlining act, and that she got more playtime (six songs to everyone else's three). But all such doubts were quashed by Jewel's extraordinary set. Cameras lent a strobe-like effect to the stage as Jewel danced as stiffly as a shy young girl coming out of her shell at the sixth grade dance, but despite an abundance of technical problems, Jewel remained collected and delivered an intense set of hits from "Hands" to "Foolish Games." Like Pocahontas on acid, Paula Cole was a slave to the rhythm, hopping around madly in her familiar squaw outfit. With "Me" to "I Don't Want to Wait," Cole clearly aimed to satisfy -- one young fan was even welcomed with open arms on stage. The exception was "feelin' love" -- quite the understatement for the performance she gave.. Writhing in orgasmic ecstasy on her piano bench, Cole was animalistic, trying to seduce the crowd by grunting urgently, "You make me feel snakes inside." Quite a shocker for the Moms and Dads that brought young Susie to the show to hear that Dawson's Creek song. The rest of us were just uncomfortable. With dramatic flair intact and her voice as strong as ever, Helen "I Am Woman, Here Me Karaoke" Reddy avoided the feminist anthem that made her, cued her DAT and launched into Broadway-meets-Holiday-Inn worthy versions of "Angie Baby" and "Tell Me It's Not True" from the musical Blood Brothers. Ian, looking like an unholy cross between Rhea Perlman and Olivia Newton-John circa "Physical," started off well with "At Seventeen," but got off course with the adult contemporary anthem rock of "Take No Prisoners" and her self-indulgent, extended solos. No less painfully earnest was Sixties crooner Judy Collins. After a desperately-long ode to her beloved "Colorado," Collins found a moment of grace in "Both Sides Now" that begged for animated woodland critter accompaniment. Relief seemed imminent when Phoebe Snow took the stage, but the "singer's singer" went astray with her freedom rock delivery and power-to-the-people cover (gasp!) of "Piece of My Heart" that recalled the Blues Brothers more than Janis Joplin. The biggest letdown of the evening came at the end of the night. After Jewel received an energetic ovation, the singers came out for a final bow. There was no final encore. No rousing rendition of "I Am Woman." No jam sessions between artists. No nothing. Granted, they had donated their time and talent, but it would have been more interesting if there had been some collaboration. This event could have been something special, something extraordinary, but instead, it was a slim helping of history in Cliff's Notes form. I can't play it as minimum requirements are a Pentium 133 and I'm moseying along with a 486-66 and all that plays when I toss it into my regular CD player are two R.E.M. tracks. I have to guess the Jewel track is "Hands" or "Down So Long". I'm sure someone will post soon enough as to what Jewel content is on this disc. Of course, for much more fun viewing and listening pleasure on CD ROM, I recommend getting a back issue of Launch #9, which came out in October of 1996 and Jewel was the feature. I cannot recall for certain what she sang on it (Who Will Save Your Soul is likely though), and there was a decent video/interview, including her mentioning JewelStock. You can order one online at the Launch website at http://www.mylaunch.com and then scroll down until you see "back issues" on the left. YES, I do want to produce a Volume 4 & continue this series. Most likely Volume 4 will be released later this year. I hope to have it available FREE through the kindness of the AFB volunteers again. Volume 4 will likely be a 90 minute tape consisting of one side Joy Eden Harrison & the other side Lisa Sanders and will be compiled from the archived recordings from last summers Living Room Tour. There's some wonderful material available, but I haven't actually assembled anything yet. I originally planned to have this available already, but my J-Team related activities have monopolized most of my time these past few months & with Joy's wonderful new album "Unspoken" being released in a few weeks, we chose not to coincide with her album release. But I will assemble a Future Folklore Volume 4 & it will happen later this year. In the meantime, I hope those that have FF 1, 2 & 3 are still enjoying them! Volume 3 is still available anytime from your friends at the AFB & they will soon have Vol 1 & 2 available again for all who missed them along with a few other "classic list tapes". Watch for their forthcoming post about it or visit the AFB at: http://www.angelfoodbank.org/ Thank you to those who asked about Future Folklore! Please e-mail me if you would like to use a MIDI. :-) MIDIs coming next: Barcelona, 1,000 Miles Away, Painters, and Adrian. - --------------begin announcement about Barcelona----------------- I've decided that I've e-mailed the list a lot (though I'm not the only one..*cough*) with updates to my site, and it's actually getting to be ridiculous. (sp). I've set up an e-mail list with updates to my website. From now on (I hope), all updates to my web site will be posted to this mailing list, and if someone wishes to use a MIDI on their on page, they will need to be on this list, as well. (Don't you want to know about a new wallpaper or MIDI, or even real audio angelfood (speaking of which, does anyone have any requests? I can put tapes into real audio now) as soon as it comes out?) Anyway--go to this page, it's really simple to subscribe and unsubscribe. I also suggest for other sites to get an updates list for their page as well.
