I just wanted to remind all of you that this Saturday evening will be a living room concert at my house, featuring the lovely Linda Sharar and Mica Richards... I could sit here forever and sing their praises, as theyare deserving of such for such awesome talent, but I have a paper to finish writing for tonite's class... ...so...here's the "low down" What: Living Room Concert When: Saturday Night Time: Come around 7:30 Where: 76 Boston Ave., medford, MA WHO: LINDA SHARAR & MICA RICHARDS DIREctions: Email me privately or check with Mapquest RSVP: Please do, ASAP Admission: $10 Donation I hope to see all of you here. I am speculating that this will be one of the LAST monthly gigs at my house. I have one in January, and another one that does not have a definite date in January with Jody Blackwell & Jerald Harscher. I hope to have one in either February or March. And then, sadly enough, I am going to have to really mellow out on putting on these shows. Schoolwork and a regular job and my poetry manuscript and these concerts, all being done at one time, is a lot to handle. I can handle it, but I also need my sanity. Next semester is going to be a really tough one for me, as I know that 2 of my classes will be with 2 of my school's hardest professors. I love the music, and I love, so much, being able to share it with all of you this way. It is such an honour to be able to open up my home to all of you so often. And I am going to miss it more than anything...but, right now, I know that this is the time for me to focus on school as much as possible. It's pretty much my "only chance," as it is the chance I have *given* myself to make things work for me studying exactly what I want to study, doing exactly what I love...no one else is going to do that for me, and now that I am doing it for myself, I just have to run wild with it and make everything of it that I possibly can. I owe it to myself to follow through with all these things I have set out to do... SO my monthly series is going to be put on hold for a while after a March gig at my place (yet TBA). I will still hold living room concerts, just on an occasional basis. I do hope to see all of you or at least as many of you as possible this coming Saturday evening. Please do be in touch. all my love, Stephanie * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Stephanie Maria Kartalopoulos * The Greek Poet Chyck kartalst@hugse1.harvard.edu This is my prayer for you: May the moon protect you with honesty, caring, and gentility. While I still have not chosen all of the judges yet, it is now the time to start sending in your storylines/ideas :-) It's simple....just send in whatever you want. It can be short and basic, it can be quite extensive and detailed, or someplace inbetween. You can make a basic storyline, or you can plan out each scene/verse. It is totally up to you. After all, you are making a pitch here, you want to "sell" your idea to Jewel (and the judges of course). HOW TO ENTER: 1) Each entry must be sent to ME at ducksoup@spectra.net and have *only* the word VIDEO in the subject line. PLEASE do not send your idea/storyline to the list, nor to Alan. Send them directly to me :-) 2) There is a limit of ONE entry per person. 3) You CAN team up with any number of people, but that entry counts as the one and only entry for each and every person on your team. Someone cannot send in a private entry, and then another one as part of a team, nor be on more than one team. 4) Each *individual* entry must have your full name. 5) Each *team* entry must have the full name of EACH member. (It is up to you if you want to include each team member's email address, but it is probably a good idea to do so) 6) Each team entry should be sent in by the "team leader", who will be the contact person if for any reason we need some information. Please indicate in the entry which person is the team leader. (i.e. some email addresses, like AOL, don't have names in them) DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: This has not been decided on yet. It WILL be either Friday evening or Saturday evening (eastern USA time). We will decide after we see how many entries are coming in. DEADLINE FOR JUDGES TO APPLY: Apply soon! I will be finalizing choices tomorrow evening at the latest. If you wish to be a judge, send me an email with only the word JUDGE in the subject line and in the body of your email include anything you would like to say to make your case :-) The chosen judges will notified tomorrow evening and will be placed on the EDA-Project list and I will start to send them the entries to that list tomorrow night or Thursday morning. (by the way, we've decided to go with 12 judges, just as we had in the 20Q project last summer) More information and instructions for the judges will be sent to them when they are notified that they have been chosen. (I do not know if I will have the time to notify those *not* chosen, as so far over 80 people have applied) Reminder: each chosen judge CAN submit a storyline/idea. Please note that each judge will be voting for a rather large number of ideas (10 to 20...it depends on how many storylines come in), and each vote counts as one point, so a judge voting for their own story really will have no influence on the final tallys, as we are sending the top ten vote-getters to Jewel for her to ponder over. About the judge applicants. As I said, there are over 80 of you. Many of you I have never heard of, many of you I know, many I know well enough that I would consider taking a bullet for (I would *consider* it, then I would likely move aside ;-) People from both sides will be chosen. I know all of you want to do this....some are VERY eager :-) The unfortunate point is, I will have to turn down over 70 of you. So please don't be too disappointed if you are not chosen as a judge. (I also know many of you really will not be disappointed at all.....you want to do it, but it ain't that big of a deal :-) Oh, there is something I'd like to say/relate. I have run more than a few list projects over the years, and many have included a call for volunteers. Each and every time, including this time, many of the volunteers tell me they so much so want to "give something back to the list", as the list had given them so much. To me, therein lies the fiber and the soul of this list :-) OK.....back to business :-) I am certain many of you are wondering if entries will be posted to the main Jewel@smoe list. The answer is yes, of course. I cannot say how many though, as we have no idea how many storylines will be submitted. I am not sure WHEN some entries will be posted to the list, but certainly not until after weekend, as there will be a lot of work to be done off list on this project, not to mention regular list duties (and weekend FOOTBALL!!) Well, that's about it. If I have forgotten anything, I will post about it later on....and man, do I have that gut feeling I have forgotten something (....don't EVEN think about it Harris.....I can see that brain of yours ready to jump on that "gut feeling" line I used) Again, you can start sending in your storylines now, and PLEASE send them to ME at ducksoup@spectra.net with only the word VIDEO as the subject line, and include the full names of each person involved with any particular entry. have fun and good luck....... Ladies and gentlemen, start your keyboards! :-) Mike :-) P.S. If for some reason you have no idea what is going on (you are new, or missed previous posts), just email me and I will send you the two previous posts on this project. Inga Vainshtein, who says she discovered the 24-year-old singer five years ago in San Diego, filed a lawsuit Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The suit claims that Jewel's mother, Lenedra Carroll, shadowed Ms. Vainshtein as a ``co-manager'' to learn how to handle Jewel's business affairs, then urged her daughter to fire Ms. Vainshtein when she learned enough to do it on her own. Jewel's mother also told the singer that advice from Ms. Vainshtein had to be approved by a ``channeler'' who purportedly sought advice from an entity referred to as ``Z,'' the lawsuit claims. A message seeking comment from Jewel's publicist at Atlantic Records was not returned Monday. AP-NY-12-01-98 0429EST Copyright 1998 The Associated Press. Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 2.7 for Mac sub 3 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, I won't do this very often, but since many of you have asked me to, I'll take some time to simply state a few perceptions I have, instead of being my usual "MrBB" self. My apologies if any "Jewel-news" subscribers feel this is innapropriately posted there, but I wanted to relay this to all Jewel list subscribers & you can feel free to delete if you don't care to read a totally opinionated post or to know me better. With more cynical (& often funny, I admit!) & more "flat out mean spirited" articles in the press being written about Jewel & The EDAs lately, something interesting has been happening to the types of emails I've been getting of late. I've recieved quite a few very sincere private emails from EDAs asking me how I feel about "Jewelbashing people" & mean-spirited articles, etc. They are sometimes upset when Jewel or the EDAs get trashed in the media & ask me how I manage to stay so uneffected by it. I also have many friends who are longtime music biz vets & many of them have noted that I've changed: become less cynical & overtly positive in the past few years. Some even miss my comically cynical side, which is alive & well I assure you, but not so prominent these days. They've noticed these changes have coincided with my involvement in the development of the EDA community over the past few years. I've invited many non-EDA friends to scan through the never ending flow of email messages that the EDAs post to each other on these discussion lists & I've noticed the more cynical ones are always the ones more annoyed or sceptical of it all. This reaction is often triggered by the more flowery sentiments which are usually well intentioned, ie, sending out positive energy, EDA gatherings, thoughts of group hugs & especially the spiritually inspired posting in the wake of Jewel's most recent release "Spirit". Many of these sentiments are exactly the type of thing I too would've gagged on a few years ago & many of my more cynical friends & the media (& some EDAs) find so questionable now. Having personally met hundreds of you at shows & events over the past few years, one of the things I definitely recognize about The EDAs (& Jewel's fanbase in general), is that for many, myself included, this radically anti-cynical approach to life is not just a shared disposition but also an act of conscious dissent. It's a protest against the anger & thoughtlessness that charachterizes so much of our social & artistic temperment these days. Many people will continue to percieve the EDAs as naive, but I'm convinced their vision of community IS a desirable thing. Thus my dedication to the EDAs & my unending support of The Living Room Tour, The EDAFoundation, group volunteering & anything that gets you away from your computers & meeting each other for real. That's where the difference occurs. To many of Jewel's fans, especially the younger ones who never experienced the 60's, Jewel is virtually unique in post-Vietnam War musical history: a female musician & songwriter who is functioning as an ongoing, binding central point in a large scale fan scene that is viewing her music as reflecting their own vision of a better, more hopeful & open minded society. There's far worse visions out there. I'd sooner question the motives of those writers bashing The EDAs for refusing dissillusionment or bashing Jewel over her current lyric content & poetry, than the motives of those who "get it". There were 88 "applications" sent in, and I ended up going with 14 judges, instead of the original decision of 7 (it was HARD to narrow it down just to 14, really hard). OK...the main news here is that due to the large number of video storylines sent in thus far (well over 70), I must make the deadline for entries Friday instead of Saturday. These judges have to read and analyse all of these entrants, and narrow down their choices/votes all by Monday evening (my time), so we just do not have the luxury of time on our side. Jewel/Spirit (2.5 stars) "Um, like gag me with a fistful of Lilith Fair ticket stubs and Briore pimple thingies --- there's only so much breathy, lightweight folk-pop a human being can take. Whatever charm this likable but drippy Alaskan brought to Pieces Of You is erased by this incredibly sappy rehash of a CD, whose only display of growth is a layering of keyboards that evokes Sarah McLachlan. All the tunes are solid -- the sentiment, however well intentioned, is unbearable." Contributing Editor Brian Hiatt reports: NEW YORK -- While Garth Brooks and Cyndi Lauper sang Christmas songs during the annual lighting ceremony Wednesday for the huge Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center, Jewel used the opportunity to promote her new single. The Alaskan folk-pop star sang "Hands" in the shadow of the several-stories-tall Norway Spruce, which was lit by country superstar Brooks and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton later in the nationally televised ceremony. "Hands" is the first single from Jewel's Spirit, which came out Nov. 17 and debuted at # 3 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Jewel has said she originally planned Spirit as a Christmas album, and though she changed her mind, the determinedly inspirational single still seems appropriate for the season. "We wanted to see Garth Brooks -- just kidding," said Lauren Wicoda, 18, who joined the tens of thousands of people who turned out for the annual lighting ceremonies overlooking the famed skating rink at Rockefeller Center. "Actually, we wanted to see Jewel and Cyndi Lauper." Wearing tan leather pants and a loose-fitting, hooded brown sweater, Jewel took the stage following a chorus-line dance by the world-famous Radio City Music Hall Rockettes. She sang such lines as "I will get down on my knees and I will pray ... we are God's hands" in a breathy whisper. She even tacked on a new lyric to the end of the song, singing the words "reflections of God" repeatedly as the TV cameras panned to a wreath hanging overhead. Later, she joined country sensation Brooks, '80s new-wave pop-star Lauper (who released the holiday album Merry Christmas … Have a Nice Life on Oct. 27), R&B singer/songwriter Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and country singer Trisha Yearwood for a spirited rendition of the holiday classic "Jingle Bells." Pedestrians jammed the streets around Rockefeller Center, and police sealed the area off wo hours before the performances began. A New York police spokesman said there was no official crowd estimate as of Thursday morning (Dec. 3), but the Daily News put the figure at around 200,000 people. "It feels like New Year's Eve out here," said Carrie Meconis, 18, who was able to get no closer than the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral, several blocks from the tree, where she sat with several friends. Brooks, whose Double Live is the country's top-selling album, got the warmest welcome of any of the singers. He performed two Christmas standards, one as a duet with Yearwood, before helping light the massive tree. The crowd was at its loudest the moment the lights were turned on, suggesting that perhaps the musicians' appeal remained secondary to that of the Christmas season. JEWEL SPIRIT Rating: 5 stars 'A classic' Follow-up to eight million-selling Pieces Of You from Alaskan singer-songwriter Jewel Kilcher's story sounds like the imaginative fiction of some over-excited pop publicist - born on a homestead in Alaska without running water and electricity, lived in a camper van in Southern California, played the coffee houses, signed a record deal, sold eight million copies of her debut album in America, lived happily ever after. The plot could not be more improbable. Remarkably, it is all more or less true, and the story gets even better Spirit, her second album, should firmly establish Jewel, now 24, as the most sparkling of all female singer-songwriters since Joni Mitchell forged the template some 30 years ago. It is a huge advance on Pieces Of You, her 1994 debut, written while still in her teens. That effort was beguiling, sensitive and full of naive promise - but nothing more. Spirit, made in just five weeks and with the songs apparently selected from more than 200 in her prolific portfolio, marks her full flowering as a writer of lyrical subtlety and melodic invention with an astonishingly mature head on her young shoulders, generously dispensing lessons in life and insights into the human condition. She has the whiff of longevity, too, a built-to-last quality that suggests her talent will still be shining brightly long after the likes of Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple have faded. Just as the enduring Mitchell has made one of the albums of 1998 with Taming The Tiger, you somehow know Jewel will still be making quality albums in the year 2020. Should that concern us when we are talking about three-minute disposable pop songs? The answer is surely yes. In her time Melanie rivalled Mitchell for popularity, but she never shared her gift for changing our perceptions of the world. That power belongs only to those rare poets who can transcend the ephemeral - Dylan, Cohen, Nyro, Newman. Prepare to admit Jewel into that elite company. This is also one of those albums on which your favourite song changes with every listen. "Deep Water" is an achingly beautiful acoustic strum with a classic Jewel treatise about realising our full potential. "What's Simple Is True" has a floating kd lang quality, while "Hands" is perhaps the key track, a piano ballad with shades of Natalie Merchant and a message about confronting one's inner fear. "Innocence Maintained" has a bouncy pop hook but a darker theme of sin and redemption, while "Barcelona" has a soaring "Let me fly" chorus which crashes back to earth dramatically on a minor chord. "Life Uncommon" is a hymn to setting ourselves free, "Do You" sounds like one of Sheryl Crow's more intriguing song-stories, and the album finishes on a perfect 10 with the prayer-like "Absence Of Fear". I have spent weeks attempting to work out why this album is so special. I still don't really know. Yet somehow Jewel seems to possess an extraordinary serenity and understanding of our place in the greater scheme of things, a philosophical acceptance that we inhabit a tiny crack of consciousness in an infinite universe of unknowing with only a flickering moment out of countless eternity to make our presence count. And we had better not waste it, she seems to say. Perhaps it was all those long nights in the cabin with no electricity and only the stars for company which produced this visionary form of Alaskan Zen. No guru, no method, no teacher - but, despite her tender years, Jewel seems to have crammed the wisdom of a lifetime into these exquisitely inspiring songs. (If you've done either of the above in the past few years, you will recieve a catalogue automatically.) First, if you'd like to recieve a catalogue & cannot go to Jewel's website, you can order one via a toll free phone call weekdays 9:30am to 5:30pm PST. During those hours call 1-877-295-3935. This is a toll free number. Once you get the machine, follow the prompts to JMerch & then to "request a catalogue". That simple. Other options give initial Higher Ground For Humanity info, catalogue phone ordering & there will soon be a "Tour Dates" option as well. Last night Michelle asked about a specific item in the catalogue that has no detailed description because its on the "discontinued items" list. It's called the "Original Jewel Cowgirl Shirt" & it sells at a lower price of $12.00 while supplies last. For those who don't remember this shirt, it was one that was sold during her 1995 & early 1996 tours. Its very simple & comes in Green, Brown, Tan & Maroon. On the front is wriitten simply : Jewel (in small lettering in the pocket area). On the back is a cowgirl figure with hat, etc. I was told that quantities are very limited on this & that they're simply moving out this old item at a lower cost to finish up with them. We had over twice the expected number of entries.....213 total !! After the judges/panelists read them all over the weekend (downed ten gallons of coffee each, in the process), and sent in their votes, we ended up with the list of "winners". We actually ended up with a "top 12" instead of a "top 10", as we had a seven way tie for the last five spots. The 12 "winning" entries were sent on to MrBB/Alan and all is now in the hands of the J-team. Before I post the winning names and entries on this list, I will be waiting for permission from each of the 12 "winners", whom I wrote each separately informing them that their entry was chosen. Once I hear back from all of them, I shall post names and/or entries accordingly :-) Also, I'd like to send a "thank you" to all 213 who sent in entries, and a HUGE thank you to the judges/panelists who slaved over the entries last weekend. Thoughtfulness. Optimism. What does Jewel know that the rest of the 90s’ music stars don’t? Russell Baillie asks the singer-songwriter a few questions Jewel this year’s cheerleader Her debut album sold 10 million copies. It got her on the cover of Rolling Stone and Time. She became a millionaire a few times over at 22 with the songs she wrote at 19, a time when she was living, on and off, in her car. Along the way she released a collection of poems which became a bestseller and got her first movie part with a celebrated director. Her name is Jewel and when it comes to all of the above, she’s still as surprised as the rest of us. “I don’t think I have ever stopped being surprised,” she says, a girlish chuckle coming down the line from New York. “Ten million records off a record like that… a folk record, for Pete’s sake, at the height of grunge and jade cynicism, is really unusual. “I am not a very hyped, marketed kind of girl. I am real sensitive, sincere, just pretty simple and thoughtful. And it’s such an odd thing for it to be popular.” But popular she is. And if Alanis Morissette is the queen of inward-looking therapy pop, Jewel is the folk-pop princess of sincerity, spirituality, humanitarianism... and the occasional song about having your love-life hit the rocks. No, not necessarily New Age, but what she calls a “practical optimism.” Like Morissette, she’s had an interesting and much-discussed past. Jewel Kilcher grew up in a log cabin in Alaska, started singing at a precocious age with her folk-singing parents who later split up, and lived in her car in San Diego before being discovered as a coffee-house folk act. “I feel lucky that I had an unusual childhood. I was exposed to some things that a lot of people aren’t. It gave me a real sense of myself at a very young age. It was fairly clear I had a strong sense of wanting to help injustice. I was exposed to a lot of hard things. So about age 18, after I was living in my car, it was like I knew why I was doing what I was doing. It wasn’t to be liked, to be famous, to be rich. “It was to continue my journey of my own happiness, my own thoughtfulness and my own wakefulness as well as help other people that were in the position that I was in of homelessness…” Normally this sort of talk and she goes on to explain how she’s sharing her good fortune, having formed with her mother-manager a charitable foundation called Higher Ground for Humanity would have the cynical journalist supressing a smirk. But Jewel makes it sound kind of endearing and, well, sincere. And clearly she doesn’t care what the likes of us bitter-and-twisted types might think of her general hippiechick-ness. Now she’s about to find out how popular she is all over again. She’s been working on her first movie, the Civil War drama “Ride with the Devil,” under celebrated director Ang Lee (“Sense and Sensibility”, “The Ice Storm”). But the real test comes with the release of her second album, titled somewhat predictably “Spirit”. It’s her first proper album. The debut “Pieces of You” was a self-produced, acoustic-based collection of studio and live tracks. This is more considered work, casting her voice against a low-key backing. That 10 million-seller, she says, was “just a very honest Polaroid of who I was when I was 19.” “So at least this way you saw me as who I was in all my awkwardness and potential, on this one you see me as I’ve grown.” “I’ve always been limited by my technical ability with my hands. Guitar is my newest instrument. I’ve been singing and writing all my life, so all I know is three chords, so every song is going to come out as a folk song. As I begin to get my hands at a point where they can articulate my thoughts musically more concisely and accurately, you’ll begin to hear what is inside of me.” From Polaroid to x-ray, then. But there’s more to it than that. Ask her to sum up what “Spirit” is about and it’s a case of, “Hold on for the world,” according to Jewel. “I guess I would say it’s an antidote to what makes out hearts heavy in the world, and it’s a very realistic practical optimism, which is different to blind optimism, which is denial and that’s different than cynicism.” “You have to keep your heart open and not get bitter. So the record is how to keep yourself alive in the middle of it.” While Jewel, bless her, uses her music in a sincere belief she is trying to make the world a better place. Even if she doesn’t get another 10-million seller. “This year’s cheerleader, is the way I look at it. My goal is to be a good humanitarian as well as a good songwriter.” - New Zealand Herald Kim Lees Your New Zealand Angel Standing By ICQ# 9270797 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ check out Kim's JEWEL Shrine... http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stadium/7485/jewel.html includes a Real Audio section of over 100 songs - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Five years worth of kisses are packed in your bags In this tiny moment fits all the big things we never had And I can't quite pinpoint when it left or what for Love always steps lightly away from the door" Jewel Kilcher - "Studies In Love #12" ------------------------------ From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Dec 10 22:41:33 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id WAA19015 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 10 Dec 1998 22:39:33 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199812110339.WAA19015@smoe.org> Date: Tue, 8 Dec 1998 12:49:26 -0500 (EST) From: Paul Schreiber To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel article from Globe and Mail Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk later. Paul ******* This Jewel is a bit too precious The pop star says she's very down-to-earth, but acts much like other spoiled young celebrities. Monday, December 7, 1998 LEAH McLAREN Special to The Globe and Mail Toronto -- It's silent-reading time for Jewel. In the 30 seconds between the limo ride and her next interview, the 24-year-old singer-songwriter has stuck the famous bump on her nose deep into a copy of D. H. Lawrence's Selected Stories. Nothing like a little Rocking-Horse Winner to perk up the weary celebrity soul. In fact, the Alaska-bred poet and pop star is so engrossed by her book that she continues to read through the first question of our interview. How will we get her to put the book down and talk? Easy. Just ask her what she's reading, jot it in your notes and, as expected, the volume falls from her French-manicured grip. "I get asked more often what my favourite nail colour is than what my favourite book is," Jewel complains, cracking pink and blue candied almonds between her tiny teeth. But apart from having to chat with nosy reporters, the three years since her debut album, Pieces of You, was released have treated Jewel Kilcher very well indeed. Her first album languished off the Billboard charts for more than a year before relentless touring yielded three hit singles and sales of 10 million copies (more than 800,000 in Canada alone). The golden triad of sugary folk ballads, Who Will Save Your Soul, You Were Meant for Me and Foolish Games, would go on to receive months of constant air play on everything from easy-listening to independent college stations across the continent. Along the way, Jewel became a figure of public fascination herself. What with that Swiss milkmaid smile and her Nordic Cinderella bio, it's no surprise this young songstress has launched countless adoring, homemade fan Web sites. She is, after all, the thinking frat boy's pop dream: a curvy, guitar-toting blonde with a mouthful of platitudes and a head crammed with New Age cotton candy. After growing up in Alaska with no running water or electricity, Jewel left home in her teens to attend fine-arts school, and eventually wound up living out of a VW van in San Diego. After earning herself a coffee-house cult following, she recorded Pieces of You and hit the promotional pavement. After more than a year of relentless touring (including a one-month stint at Toronto's C'est What), the VW van was transformed into a limousine and the smoky cafi became the open-air stadiums of Lilith Fair. Like the model who wants to act and the actor who wants to direct, Jewel the pop star has also recently decided to promote herself to the position of Jewel the poet. Last spring, HarperCollins released a night without armor, a collection of Jewel's juvenile scribbles which went into 15 subsequent printings and took up semi-permanent residence on The New York Times bestseller list. And yes, she's in the movies too. Earlier this year she played the lead role of an 18-year-old bride in Ang Lee's upcoming Civil War drama, Ride with the Devil. Although claims of Jewel's literary, songwriting and screen genius might make cynics snicker, one fact definitely stands: The girl can sing. On her new album, Spirit, her trilling, folkie croon almost distracts a listener from the record's embarrassing lyrics, by turns pure Hallmark sentimentality and God Loves You warmth. This is a voice so naturally sweet that when, in the first line of the single Hands, Jewel sings: "If I could tell the world just one thing it would be, we're all okay," we actually believe her. That is, until we meet her. Reclining on a hotel settee in black leather and denim, Jewel ran her fingers through her honey stream of hair and sighed over the difficulties of new-found fame. She told the story of her most disturbing fan experiences: an unstable white supremacist who had picked her for his Aryan queen, along with the usual slew of weirdo death threats. But what really gets this young yodeller's goat is the media's refusal to take her seriously "intellectually." In this age of fashionable irony, Jewel's music offers a rare reservoir of uplifting earnestness. And although she's sticking like glue to her warm 'n' fuzzy ballads, Jewel feels that her more angry, Prozac-popping female colleagues are getting more than their fair share of intellectual credibility. "I think people take anger more seriously than they take optimism. . . . So to be taken seriously intellectually, people will take on cynicism and anger and those sorts of things because the media respects them more intellectually." Ever the optimist, Jewel pointed out that there is a bright side to being a rich, young, world-famous pop sensation. For one thing, you can have all the plastic surgery and personal trainers you want. "People in my position can afford a standard of beauty that most people just can't afford," she admitted. However, she went on to add that she hates the idea of becoming that magazine-perfect celebrity who made her feel insecure as an adolescent. "I never could do it [have plastic surgery]. . . . I'd be basically continuing a behaviour that made me feel awkward as a kid." What makes Jewel feel awkward as an adult is when people treat her like a freak because she's a star. This, the two-time Grammy nominee figures, is the reason why famous people often get romantically involved with other famous people. "We're not any different than we ever have been," she explained, referring to stars like herself, "but it gets increasingly hard to find people who will treat you as normal. You can't have a relationship with somebody who thinks you're abnormal. Other famous people know that -- they know that you're normal, they know that you're no different, they know that you're fallible, they don't have an overly exaggerated respect for you." As for her love life nowadays, the singer/actor/poet is currently involved with an unnamed, non-famous "cowboy from Montana," and has also been romantically linked to actor Sean Penn, who, while they were seeing each other, heralded her as the best songwriter since Bob Dylan. Although Jewel insists that she's just a down-to-earth, internally balanced chick, she actually behaves a lot as you'd imagine an indulged young pop star would -- refusing to shake hands, dismissing her middle-aged handlers in haughty tones and, when the phone rings, lifting the receiver and immediately hanging up with an impish giggle. "That was my next interview," she said with a smirk. "He's thinking, 'What a bitch!' " As the music industry's reigning queen of soft relativism, Jewel said that although she does believe in God, she thinks that all religions are basically leading to the same place. "In nature, where everything has such intrinsic balance, spirituality should reflect the same balance, and you should live in balance with your sexuality, with your mind, with your intellect, with your heart, as with your spirit." But despite all the New Age rhetoric, Jewel does draw the line somewhere. Although she solemnly pointed out that poor people have the greatest faith in God, she was disapproving of some of their more icky spiritual antics. "When you go to India . . . , one of the most quote-unquote spiritual countries, and you see people mutating themselves, starving themselves in the name of spirituality, it never struck me as right." How come? "Because we have all and we should embrace all." ------------------------------ From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Dec 10 23:01:33 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id XAA19709 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 10 Dec 1998 23:00:55 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199812110400.XAA19709@smoe.org> Date: Wed, 9 Dec 1998 12:20:25 +0100 From: "J.S.S." In addition to serving as a delegate to the convention that wrote the state constitution in the 1950s, he represented Homer for several years in the state legislature. Several Kilcher family members are professional folk musicians well known in Alaska. Jewel Kilcher is the first family member to win national acclaim for her music. ------------------------------ From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Dec 12 10:22:44 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id KAA27844 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 12 Dec 1998 10:22:02 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199812121522.KAA27844@smoe.org> Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 00:11:31 EST From: ABershaw@aol.com To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB- Upcoming Jewel Dates Revised & Updated Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, Here's a recap of upcoming confirmed performances & general Jewel info of interest. Now, I don't know if they'll show the repeat of the show where Jewel was on, or if they'll have one of their older episodes. I guess we'll just have to see. For those of you wondering, my friend said that Jewel was being interviewed while lying down and getting her makeup done. Most likely talking about fashion. :) That's all for now, :) Melissa the angel who learned how to drive. The 2nd time she was bumped due to the death of Frank Sinatra & the 1st time for the "sheep cloning" news blitz! Now theres trivia for ya!) She will reschedule a visit on Charlie Rose sometime in January. We'll post the date on the website when its confirmed. This is usually a great show with intelligent interviews. Charlie Rose is the best in the business, IMO. Also, Jewel will be taping a segment for CBS This Morning on Tuesday (12/15). We don't know when this segment will air or if it may air same day. As the subject says, today's USA Today has two articles in the "Life" section that mention Jewel.....one involving CD sales (CD sales by all musical artists is the cover story in that section) and another small feature article on page 11 of the Life section. The feature article is a supplement to another article on that page about Christine Lavin, who is touring the country with her "show", which among other things includes her giving away recently published books during the show. The Jewel article is about how Lavin has people play a game involving reading Jewel's poetry from 'a night without armor' and earning points when they are the first to notice a 'key word'. (I know it sounds odd.....the article explains it better) I don't have time to get into the details, just wanted to alert you folks who may want to get the paper. I would also assume that both articles are on the USA Today web page at http://www.usatoday.com Then hit the "Life" section on the web page. Unless someone beats me to it, I'll post the articles on the list tonight when I get home. Mike :-) P.S. The CD sales story mentions Spirit sold 891,000 units as of December 6th, which was 9 days ago, so I'm nearly certain it's passed a million by now. The limited edition vinyl version of "Spirit" is definitely available. It's a two record set, but does not differ from the CD. It's actually quite nice if you enjoy cranking up a turntable once in a while. (For the few die-hard vinyl collectors out there, you'll like it. It's an immaculate pressing & sounds wonderful. Since theres only 3 or 4 songs per side, the grooves are nice & wide & provide great audio.) The cover is the same as the CD, but with a larger cover photo bordered in white. The back cover is different than the CD but contains the same info. It comes in a wide sleeve that holds both records as well as a full size insert that has a photo of Jewel & the credits on one side & the lyric transcriptions on the other. You should be able to order it from any CD store that is willing to order vinyl. I see it around for anywhere between $10 to $20 US dollars. I don't know about international availabilty. 2) How can I get a Higher Ground/Jewel Merchandise catalogue? Easy! Between the hours of 9:30am to 5:30PM PST, EDAs in the USA can request one toll free by calling 1-877-295-3935. Once there follow the prompts to "JMerch" & then to "request a catalogue". Very nice people will take your request & mail you one. All others can see & order via the website & yes, they accept International orders with additional shipping charges applicable. 3) In the catalogue, theres an InnerChange T-shirt now. What is this & what does it say on it? Quite a few asked me this, since the graphic in the catalogue is a bit small to read clearly. This is actually my favorite Jewel t-shirt & has really nice artwork on it in vivid colors. This shirt was designed for & originally sold at the two InnerChange gigs in July of 1994 that were recorded for the "Pieces Of You" album. (All the solo acoustic tracks come from these two gigs.) The design is a dark purple coffee cup with Jewel rising out with angel wings & the moon behind her on a lighter purple background. Underneath it reads: JEWEL KILCHER Live at the INNER CHANGE COFFEE HOUSE PACIFIC BEACH, CA JULY 28 & 29 1994 The printing quality is wonderful on these & they're made of environmentally friendy materials (100% Organically grown cotton). They're $20. You can get these at the website as well as calling the # mentioned above. Which naturally leads to Q #4: 4) When is the redesigned www.jeweljk.com website going to be unvieled? We're real close on this! The final touches of "phase one" are almost ready. It'll likely be in a few days & I'll try to give you 24 hours notice on that. We have lots of great plans for this website & some may include you! Mike :-) *********** http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/lmds434.htm Garth atop fall album crop Garth Brooks wins by a landslide, thanks to hard campaigning and some ballot-box tinkering. Jewel unseats Whitney Houston in a surprise upset. Ice Cube's momentum is slowing to a glacial pace. And it's too early to tell if the Prince of Egypt is a dark horse or a lame duck. As results from the music industry's Super Tuesday continue to pour in, retailers are getting a clearer picture of what's hot and what's not this holiday season. A slew of high-profile albums released Nov. 17 predictably triggered a shopping frenzy, though not every candidate wowed the constituency. Brooks' Double Live broke two long-standing chart records by selling 1,085,000 copies in its first week, yet Houston's My Love Is Your Love failed to crack the top 10, selling only 123,000 copies to land at No. 13. Seal's Human Being trailed at No. 22 and has been free-falling since. While Super Tuesday discs by Jewel, Mariah Carey, Method Man, Ice Cube and the Offspring fared far better, none are in spitting range of Brooks, poised to remain a record store Goliath through December. "The most conspicuous winner from the Super Tuesday slate is Garth," says Geoff Mayfield, Billboard's director of charts. "He set a goal and met it, selling more records in the first three weeks than any other album in the SoundScan era. He did it largely through mass merchants. Other artists have sold better in record stores, but the department stores put him over the top." Nobody stumped harder. Thanks to a promotional blitz that included a live NBC special and closed-circuit broadcast to 2,400 Wal-Marts, Brooks unloaded 2.16 million albums in three weeks, breaking his own record set last year with Sevens. However, the industry is privately downplaying his first-week tally, which was considerably boosted by an accounting cycle shift at Handleman Entertainment Resources, which supplies Wal-Mart, Target and other chains. Its switch to the more common Monday-Sunday cycle gave Brooks an extra weekend of sales denied to earlier record-setters. Even Brooks can't sell enough records by Dec. 31 to capture 1998's top-seller title. That ship has sailed. The unsinkable Titanic soundtrack, launched in late 1997, has sold 9.14 million copies this year alone to lead the pack in 1998. Celine Dion's Let's Talk About Love is a distant second with 5.53 million. The rest of the year's top 10 spots are held by, in descending order, Backstreet Boys, Shania Twain's Come on Over, City of Angels soundtrack, Savage Garden, Will Smith's Big Willie Style, Matchbox 20's Yourself or Someone Like You, the Beastie Boys' Hello Nasty and the Armageddon soundtrack. The ranking could change in the fourth-quarter stretch, as Christmas shoppers navigate through the logjam of superstar albums, most unleashed since September. "This has been an outstanding season because there have been very few disappointments," says Mike Shalett, chief of SoundScan, which has tabulated sales data since 1991. "This year looks really strong. Our numbers are rising almost 10% (over 1997)." Shalett credits part of that rise to the wide variety of music reaching a broad demographic, including increasingly active buyers over 35. They account for some of Jewel's surprisingly sturdy sales. Driven by the single Hands, her Spirit album is outpacing new efforts by mega-divas Houston and Carey. "It's the combination of a great song and her amazing appeal with males and females across the board," Shalett says. "She's shooting beyond anyone's expectations." One surprising negative factor: Balmy weather, especially on the East Coast, has had a chilling effect on record sales, Shalett says. Weather permitting, shoppers should be scooping up fall releases by Dion, Metallica, Jewel, 'N Sync "and all the usual suspects," says Stan Goman of Tower Records. "Alanis is still holding up. We're not a huge Garth seller, but we're doing well. Super Tuesday was OK, but it wasn't as super as everyone predicted. We thought November would be a lot better. There's nothing super-duper exciting out right now. There's no Titanic." Goman foresees brisk sales for box sets by Bruce Springsteen and John Lennon and for Hill's solo debut, which has sold 2.27 million copies since its Aug. 25 release. Though Super Tuesday albums are healthy, earlier releases are showing remarkable staying power: 'N Sync's self-titled debut, out March 24, has sold 2.8 million copies and is No. 3 in Billboard (its new Home For Christmas is No. 9). Twain's 14-month-old Come on Over, returning this week to the top 10, is at 3.96 million. "Having a whole bunch of records released in a two- or three-week period is not going to increase business overall," says Goman. "It doesn't make up for the crummy business we had in the summer or early fall. Record companies should space them out." The recent avalanche could have crushed the potential of such second-tier stars as Seal. Houston's poor entry can be explained in one word. "Radio," Goman says. "She's not getting airplay. And she was gone too long. You just can't be gone these days." Billboard's Mayfield weighs in: "Never underestimate Whitney or her label (Arista). The belief in the trade is that rushing her new album into release gave them no opportunity to set it up properly. They could have waited till the second single. She appeals to a lot of older customers who don't initially rush out to buy records. They may wait till they're familiar with two or three songs. Could her album come back up? Absolutely." Mayfield is impressed by the market clout of Garth's live set, Jewel's sophomore effort, Metallica's two-CD Garage Inc. and Dion's holiday-themed These Are Special Times. "If I could buy stock in records, I'd want points on Garth, Celine and Jewel," he says. "If allowed to invest beyond that, I'd take of piece of 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys. And I would not underestimate Shania Twain. She's got great momentum." The fast rise of 'N Sync, the first act since the Spice Girls to have two albums in the Top 10, is "not eating into the success of Backstreet Boys," Mayfield says. Conversely, the lackluster sales of the Prince of Egypt soundtrack could be partially blamed on the overabundance of When You Believe, its prized duet by Houston and Carey. "The Nov. 17 impact of the soundtrack was immediately diminished by the presence of the same song on two other records," Mayfield says. "The soundtrack didn't get even one week of exclusivity, so it couldn't be a unique event. But the label didn't have unrealistic expectations. They know they have to wait for the movie to come out." A box-office smash could goose record sales, though probably not to the levels achieved by Titanic. "Titanic is a phenomenon," Mayfield says. "That word gets used too much, but it's the only way to describe it. This is the best-selling score ever and it's moving up among the all-time best-selling soundtracks. A lot of people in this industry are scratching their heads to come up with the next Titanic. They might as well not even try." The person who has the game as a part of her show, Christine Lavin, is a folksinger/songwriter....... The Jewel article is at http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/books/b903.htm while the full article on Lavin (which does not mention Jewel) is at http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/books/b902.htm Mike :-) ***** Jewel inspires Poet Game In an interview with Andy Smith of the Providence, R.I., Journal-Bulletin, Christine Lavin explained the Lavin Lending Library, which inspired Smith to donate his copy of A Night Without Armor, poetry by the young rock star Jewel. Lavin noticed that the poet is fond of some words more than others. Her favorites appear to be flesh, fruit, tongue and breast. Which inspired Lavin to read some of Jewel's poetry onstage and to play the Poet Game. The rules: Each player takes turns reading a Jewel poem aloud. If the poem contains the words "flesh," "fruit," "tongue" or "breast," the first person to hear any of those words jumps up, screams "Jewel!" stops the reading, scores 5 points, takes possession of the book and does the next reading. If you read an entire poem without being interrupted, you score 5 points. If you laugh while you are reading a poem, you lose 5 points and forfeit your turn. The player who has the most points at the end of the game (or when boredom sets in) wins the book. The winner promises to host another Poet Game party and pass the book on. It's from last Friday's interview on Orlando's SHE 100.3. I was pleased that the show did a pretty good job and actually asked some decent questions, and didn't embarrass us Orlando EDAs. :-) Sue wasn't a big fan, and it was her mission to bring up Jewel's tooth, while Rocky's goal was to get her to light his Elvis. Read on. 12-11-98 Rocky and Sue Morning Show R=Rocky S=Sue J=If you don't know who this is, I can't help you. :-) R: This should be Jewel right over here. S: Wonderful. Good Morning, Jewel. Thank you so much for being on with us. J: My pleasure. R: How ya feelin'? J: I'm pretty good--I'm a little tired. R: Yeah? J: Yeah. S: Did you perform....recently? J: I did the Tom Synder show. S: Oh, really? J: Yeah. S: Oh, that's nice. R: Did you hafta, like, continually wake Tom up? J: (giggles) No, he's actually quite perky. S: He saves all of his energy for the show. J: (giggles) S: Hey--I just was reading in an article the other day--it said after you finish most of your performances, your favorite thing to do is go home and get in your PJ's. J: Yeah, I'm kind of a homebody that way. And I work a lot during the day and if I can get 5 hours of sleep, I'm pretty happy too. S: Yeah, that's pretty good...It's very comforting, isn't it? J: It is. S: I like that. R: And it paints a real pretty picture for myself and our producer, She-man Rhimes(?). (Cheering in background) J: (kidding tone) However the other way around is frightening many small children. (Laughter) S: Yes, Really. R: Yesterday, we had people call in with questions--"Ask Jewel a Question", and, uh....let me go down the list here...Oh, you know what? J: What? R: What kind of surfboard do you use? J: Uh, I use a long board...'bout a 9'3". R: Are you a "Goofy Foot"? J: I am Goofyfoot. (Laughter) R: I have no idea what I'm talking about, but a listener asked me to ask you that. J: OK. S: This would be a guy from CA, who is a surfer himself, and he said ask her if she's a goofyfoot...We have no idea--Is it a position that you stand on the board? J: It's just which foot goes forward. Most people put their left foot forward, (indiscernible) backside, so I'm goofyfoot. R: Oh, OK. S: You have had...quite an amazing life, have you not? J: Mmm Hmm. S: I mean, now you're a household name in America...Your performances, from what I understand, go way back to when you were 6 years old. J: Yep. S: 6 years old on the stage? I mean, is that something you wanted to do or were you kinda pushed into it by family, or, from what I understand, there's definitely entertainers in your family... J: It was just natural. My whole family was musicians and performers, actors, and thespians, you know. Natural thing to do. S: Wow. R: What was your best, and what was your worst performance ever? Like, worst gig? Best and worst gig? J: I think some best gigs were with Bob Dylan. That was great. And worst gig, I think, when I was 14, I was playing for, like, 3 in a veterans' bar, you know? (laughter) S: Oh, gee. R: In a veteran's bar? Like a VFW thing? J: It was about 4 in the afternoon when the gig started, and we had a five- hour gig to do, and nobody was listening, and I was kinda pouting on stage. My dad was like, "Stop pouting, you're professional, and you have to be 'on'", and I was like "No one's listening anyway!", and this guy came up to me drunk and he goes, "Stop (indiscernible)". (laughter) R: Wow, if you can survive that, you play go anywhere. S: And she remembers it still, so it wasn't a good moment. I'm wondering if you could say hello to little 7 year-old Logan--she's a She 100.3 listener, and a big, big Jewel fan. Her mom says that she looks like you... J: Awwww.... S: ...and she dresses like you... J: Awwww.... S: ...and she puts your cassette in her little Fisher Price recorder, and she sings! J: (tee hee) S: And if you could say hi to her, she would be thrilled--her name's Logan. J: OK. Hi, this is Jewel saying hi to Logan (tee hee). R: AWWWWW.... S: Mom is so exci--The phone's ringing right now--she wants a copy! That's nice, thank you. R: Hey, who do you listen to when your out on the road? J: You know, I don't travel with a CD Player or a...anything. I'm kinda lazy about that. I guess people are kinda readers or they're listeners--I'm a reader. R: OK. Well, I hope you're a listener right now, 'cuz we're gonna play one of your songs. We'll be back with more Jewel. (Who Will Save Your Soul) R: Feels kinda weird playing somebody's music when they're right here with us. S: So, Jewel, are you a Radio listener? J: Gosh. (embarrassingly) To Country Radio! S: Ah! J: (apologetically) I know. S: Which leads us to another question, a listener called in and said, "I think I heard Jewel say she was going to do some country songs." J: I write a lot of country music...at my live shows, I play them. I'm not sure when my country album will come out, but it's something I really hope to be able to do. S: And when you say "country", what kind of country do you mean? 'Cause country is so... J: Diversified. S: It is. It really is. J: I write a lot of traditional country, like traditional kind of standard ballads, but I write a lot of new country, too, so... S: Mmmm Hmmm... J: All fun. S: Someone also wondered, would you be covering anyone else's songs? Or is that not something you really care to do? J: I never really thought about it. Yet. If I fell in love with something, maybe. I'd rather write 'em. R: Hey, tell us about the movie you're gonna be in, "Ride with the Devil". J: (yawns) Oh, excuse me, I'm yawning. (laughter) J: It's an Ang Lee film. S: We have that effect on people. J: (laughs) R: (laughing) When we get to one of *my* questions, Jewel decides to yawn. J: It's nothing personal. (sarcastic) Actually, it was totally personal. S: (joking) Just because you asked. R: I should have never asked a movie question. Go ahead. J: No, the movie is directed by Ang Lee, who did "Sense and Sensibility", and "The Ice Storm". And, I play a 19 year-old Civil War chickee. R: And is it something you *wanted* to do, or did they approach you, or... J: People forced me into it, actually. R: Really? J: (joking) Yeah. I had no interest, and they forced me in. It was terrible. No, it was really interesting doing it and having so much change and...I'm being very sarcastic, aren't I? R: (sarcastic also) I'm glad you have so much control over your career. That's great, it's good to hear. (laughter) R: Is there any certain place you get most of your inspiration, like when you're driving, when you're showering, when you're--you know-- rolling around in bed? J: My word. (laughter) S: In your PJ's! R: Yeah, in your PJ's! J: Umm...not particularly. Just anything. Writing to me--it just comes really naturally, luckily. As long as I have a minute, I can do it. S: Now that you're a famous singer, is there anything about yourself, either physically or emotionally, that you'd like to change? J: I think that there's always things people are wanting to work on in themselves. Fame is like a magnifying glass. Before you get famous, if you have insecurities, fears and neuroses, when you get famous, they get worse. (indiscernible) concentrate to be more disciplined so you don't turn into a big brat. But that's not a bad thing either--it makes you work on yourself. S: When are we going to see you in Orlando? J: I'm touring the States in the Spring/Summerish. So around then. S: Next year. J: Yeah. S: Do drop by. J: (in a voice) I shall, darling. R: Hey, it must have been quite an honor for you a coupla weeks ago for the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. J: Big Honor. R: Uh huh. I wonder if you could do something for us right now. S: Oh no... R: See, we have our own little tradition that we're starting here right now, we're a brand new morning show...We've been on the air for like 3 months. J: Uh huh? R: We thought we'd do something to traditionally start the holidays here in Central Florida every year. We have a life-size bust of Elvis, trimmed for the holidays, and maybe if you could help us count down... J: Now, wait. "Trimmed for the Holidays". Didn't Elvis always get "un-trim" for the holidays? Kinda let the belly grow or something. R: It's only the bust, it's only the head of Elvis. J: Oh, OK. J: Well, his cheeks could be a little jolly. R: We've got lights on him, he has balls hanging from his ears, and there's Twinkies all around his neck. J: That....sounds like Elvis. R: Can we do a countdown, and you can help us, as we do the first ever lighting of Elvis on the She morning show? J: It would be a...great honor. Yes. S: I've got the plug. R: Here we go. J: 3. J: 2. J: 1. J: Contact. (cheering) R: Thank you so much, Jewel. J: You're very welcome. S: We understand you're going to be doing a Christmas Eve concert at the Vatican? J: (excited) Yes. S: Wow. J: For (we?) Pope. S: Geez. You've come a long way, Jewel. J: You know, from Coffee Shops to Popedom... S: Wow. J: Don't know how that happened. R: How do ya top the Pope? J: Boy...uh, Elvis is kind of up there huh? (laughter) R: OK. A close second was the lighting of the Elvis on the She morning show. S: I'm so glad we could be part in that. R: Thank you so much for your time this morning and enjoy the Holiday. It's Jewel, ladies and gentlemen on She 100.3! (Clapping) S: Thank you for lighting our Elvis. J: (tee hee) My pleasure. S: That was very nice of you, and it was a pleasure talking with you. J: Thank you. R: Thanks, Jewel! S: Merry Christmas. J: Bye. (Hangs Up) R: I gotta go take a cold shower. Are you in love, Ron? Ron: What a pa-too-tee. R: Nice lady. S: Do you know, her voice is as pretty when she speaks as when she sings. R: And just look at how pretty Elvis is too. S: She's a very good sport to do that...I was kinda holding my breath, you know, hoped she wouldn't be offended by it, and she wasn't. She was cool. R: We didn't get into the tooth thing though. S: No. No. R: She was too nice. She was too nice! S: Alright. I gotta be honest with ya: forget about that tooth, I don't care about that tooth anymore. Ron: The tooth, and the big thighs, you don't care about either one anymore? S: I take it all back...I was wrong...she's a wonderful person. Simply put, Bibi (Jewel's Creative Director) is now designing the tour book that will be on sale during Jewels' 1999 tours of Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Europe, North America and anyplace I may have left out. Instead of just having lyrics from the new album in the book (which anyone can get from the CD or various web sites), they want to include many profound and/or thought provoking, silly and/or bizarre or any other kind of quotes, stories, sayings etc that Jewel wrote or uttered that may be perfect for this book. (of course, it will be chock full of about 60 photographs too.....they plan on a 48 page book right now) All told, she wants a good 120 or so Jewel quotes, Jewelisms, sayings, stories and whatevers. Who knows all of the best of these tidbits other than the 2,700 or so of us EDAs? A special AOL address has been set up for your submissions, but first there's some necessary "rules" we'd like you all to follow, so that it can assure that the best items that suit this purpose are submitted. *First rule....PLEASE do not use anything that is already on Albert Wang's Jewel Quotations page at http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewel.html Bibi has already perused that site and has gotten the ones she likes from there. Sending in identical items from that site will only increase her workload as she would have to read them again (and again and again and again.....assuming more than one person would send in the same item). So we *please* ask of you, before you send in your submitted item, check out Alberts' page (if you have web access) and make sure you don't send in something already on that site. (If you don't have web access, send in what you want) **Second rule....the quote (etc) must be able to stand out on it's own. If the quote is an answer to a question it must be able to read clearly without knowing what the question was - it MUST stand on its own. The quotes/stories/Jewelisms can come from songs, poems and other Jewel thingies....quotes from TV appearances, magazine/newspaper articles, concerts or anywhere you heard/read Jewel say something profound, silly, intellectual, thought provoking, life changing, dorky, vulgar, nice or whatever. (how's that for a mouthful?? ;-) "Yo Mike! Where do we send these quotes etc?" Hang on....I have two more rules yet to come :-) ***Third rule....all items must be submitted by noon PT/3pm ET (USA) time, this Sunday, December 20th. ****Fourth rule....one of them "I like this rule" rules....you can send in as many items as you like. However if possible please send them all in the same email or limit the number of emails by bunking your items up. OK, now you can ask where to send your submitted item. "Alright....where do we send them duckboy?" Please send all submitted items to JKquotes@aol.com Do NOT send them to me or Alan, send them to JKquotes@aol.com Again, all items must be sent in by noon Pacific Time (USA)/3pm Eastern Time this Sunday December 20th. Will, that's it. Hop to it :-) Mike **** a couple of Jewel quotes for ya...... "God damn ye Harris Brothers!" - Jewel at JewelStock night #2 - July 19th 1996, Bearsville NY Where MrBB got his name.... It's accompanied by a full page colour picture of Jewel - it's the one where she's wearing a tiara and with 'tears' on her cheeks. ------------------------------------------------- BABY MADONNA Jewel: raised by wolves in igloos. Maybe 'People were trying to consume me without even knowing what I tasted like,' says singer Jewel Kilcher of the first flush of her stardom, 'and that made me feel funny.' Glacier mint? Chocolate sundae? Peach? Many hours have been wasted by people attempting to pin down her precise flavour. Now she's about to break into movies - in A Ride With The Devil, helmed by Ice Storm director Ang Lee, no less - a manoeuvre which ought to help readjust the off-kilter accounts of her existence which followed the multimillion-selling success of her first record, Pieces Of You. Jewel wrote and recorded that album in her teens, then told the world about her ancestry (Swiss), her childhood (in an enclosed Alaskan Mormon community), her hard times (she slept in a van while trying to make it) and her sizable celebrity (she dated Sean Penn, who described her as the most important songwriter since Bob Dylan). 'It was mind-boggling,' she says now of her portrayal. 'I'm not a freak to me. I was raised where I was raised and I took it that people liked me, I swear, but to the States I looked like some freaky thing raised by wolves. In igloos.' Now, she's got a new album - Spirit, where her country-folk hybrid is bulked by Madonna producer Patrick Leonard and her voice soars and swirls like Joni Mitchell's did - another tour, and of course that movie, which opens in the US in June. 'I toured for four years, then did it again, and I was so burned out I just needed a change,' she says of her decision to do A Ride With The Devil. 'It was a complete change of pace and a huge challenge - horrifying, and very gratifying.' But she's never been easily scared. 'For some things,' she says, 'I'm pretty fearless. I used to get really sick all the time, but I could go on stage in front of 30,000 people, before the Ramones, and go, "Fuck you, listen".' Pietro SANTA MESSA DI NATALE 23:55 Celebrata da Sua Santità Giovanni Paolo II My italian is not very good (:-)) but I could translate it so I think you will be able also. Mondovisione stands for Worldwide-broadcast. And the St. Petrus Basilic (sort of cathedral) is situated at Vatican City. So I couldn't be wrong right :-)) This is the announcement of RAIUNO and my source is RAIUNO's www. look at : http://www.raiuno.rai.it/raiuno/sette/index2.htm Surf to "Giovedi-24" (24 Dec.) and scroll till 23:55 If you have the possibility to record it on RAIUNO I recommend to do that instead of your local tv-station. RAIUNO won't use subtitles and is always in full HiFi-stereo. Also there are NONE commercial breaks in the broadcasts. (Yes even in Hooland we are jalous about that but you american angels must get crazy of all those commercials in the middle of shows :-)) Soccer matches are scrambled sometimes but I can't imagine that they will scramble such important celebration for the world. I will search for more TV-stations who are going to buy and broadcast the show and tell you later about it. Stay tuned! Greetings, Marcel. It's also not being called anything consistent throughout the US. So far several different listings have been seen such as "Christmas at the Vatican" & "Music from the Vatican". Jewel performed "Hands" with the 100-piece Monte Carlo Symphony and a 40 voice choir , as well as the traditional Christmas carol "What Child Is This," which she sang with her mother. The concert, which was taped on December 19th, will be broadcast on Christmas Eve in Italy on Canale 5, throughout Europe on various networks & in many US locations on various PBS stations. (In the US, broadcast times & name of program will vary! Check local listings. I will not have that info. Post your findings to the list so others may benefit, please.) We've all heard the stories of Jewel's early struggles by now, most of them centring around her eating peanut butter sandwiches and living in a van. After a year and a half of persistent touring, her 1995 debut album, Pieces of You, broke and sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. It's a long way from Alaska to the recording studios of California, but the woman seems determined to make an industry out of her folky self. Spirit shows a more polished Jewel -- she's older, wiser, and eager to preach love and goodness. Long-time Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard was enlisted to produce, and a variety of session musicians pop up on the record, notably Jude Cole on acoustic guitar and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea on bass. Gone is the bittersweet naivete of "You Were Meant for Me" and "Foolish Games", replaced by lessons learned ("Deep Water") and even lite cynicism ("Down So Long"). Carefully embellishing the 13 tracks, Leonard underscores the singer's newfound sophistication with a glossy pop production job. Jewel gets sober about herself on the standout "Barcelona" ("Me and my shadow are wrestling again/ Look out stranger, there's a dark cloud coming in"); and the power of the individual is the theme of the Tori Amos-like first single, "Hands", which was co-written by Leonard and Jewel in the studio. It's fitting that Spirit was recorded near a stable where Jewel was able to sneak away for horseback-riding sessions -- visions of Liona Boyd were dancing through my head as I listened to the record. And it's obvious after this second release that the songwriter is deeply rooted in true folk idealism: on the nonmusic side of things, she and her mother recently founded a nonprofit organization called Higher Ground for Humanity to "support, inspire and empower new possibilities for humankind." Spirit is annoyingly contemporary with its themes of self-help and self-love -- both noble but overexploited ideas in this age of Oprah-mania. But even though Jewel may be alone out there singing her fragile calls for peace and love, with her growing list of worthy causes and accomplishments, cynics (like me) may one day be her greatest champions. review by Kim Bingham, December 10 - 17 1998 issue From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Dec 24 03:45:44 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id DAA21705 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 24 Dec 1998 03:45:01 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199812240845.DAA21705@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: ABershaw@aol.com Date: 22 Dec 98 20:44:12 -0800 Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-Re: CBS This morning -Confusion relief! New Zealand's *only* serious music magazine as far as I'm concerned (and that's not just cos it's free... but it helps!!!)... once again, it shows how New Zealand reviewers find it difficult to take Jewel as a serious artist... JEWEL Spirit (Atlantic) Jewel Kilcher is a very serious young woman. Her lyrics reflect a persona much older than her 24 years. On “Spirit”’s opening track, “Deep Water”, she advises that: “When you’re standing in deep water… it’s nothing without love.” On the album’s first single, “Hands”, she gushes: “If I could tell the world just one thing, it would be that we’re all OK.” At this point I had expected to write a cynical, sneering review, but then I realised, “Hey, these songs aren’t bad!” I wasn’t particularly enthralled by Jewel’s 10 million selling debut album, but as earnest and overwrought as “Spirit” gets in places, it does carry a certain charm. The production by Patrick Leonard is understated and sensitive. The musical backing, especially by acoustic guitarist Jude Cole complements Jewel’s melodic, introspective tunes perfectly. There are some minor annoyances such as the multiple use of a flame as a metaphor for the human spirit (it shows up in at least five songs), her cloying sensitivity in “Fat Boy” and her vocal swoops over several octaves within one word on “Enter From The East”. But the pluses far outnumber the negatives. In addition to “Hands” there are at least four more possible singles including the more musically muscular “Down So Long” and the strident call to arms of “Life Uncommon”. Jewel asks us to, “Lend our voices to sounds of freedom” and, hey, I was about ready to sign up. Peter, Paul & Mary can’t be far behind. Uh oh, I’m getting’ in that cynical mood again. Before it takes me over completely, let me say, “Spirit” is a pretty good record. With the holidays & various other family things going on, it's taking a little bit longer than expected. Stay tuned! #2- Is Jewel doing a new VH1 Special? What is that "campfire" commercial? This commercial is simply one of many new VH1 Promo Spots that recently began airing. There's several others, all done in that same black & white style featuring other artists. It's NOT a commercial for a Jewel special, Storytellers or Behind The Music show as many of you asked. It's simply a promo for the VH1 Network. For those who've not seen it, it features Jewel, her dad Atz & her younger brother Atz Lee sitting around a campfire. Jewel & Atz talk briefly about the unstable nature of musicians & cowboys & then Jewel is shown briefly playing "Hands" solo acoustic. You'll see similar VH1 spots by Mariah Carey, John Mellancamp & a few other artists. I believe Jewel's spot was filmed last October. Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Howdy hi, boys and girls! The following article appears in this week's issue of New Times Los Angeles: http://www.newtimesla.com/1998/122498/badteeth1.html "Bad Teeth" By Keven McAlester It scarcely requires a philosopher's insight to note that Rolling Stone magazine no longer distinguishes itself with forceful criticism or provocative music writing. So it was something of a shock to open the current year-end issue of RS and find one of the oddest pieces of journalism in recent memory. It's the cover story. The one about tortured optimist Jewel. The one written by Neil Strauss, New York Times pop music critic and erstwhile man on the L.A. scene. At first, the story seems like a joke, a standard profile taken to superlatively hackneyed extremes -- smart writer meets hopelessly earnest subject on her own level. About midway through, however, Strauss notes that "all interviews are a seduction process, on both sides, and this one is really working"; he then launches himself and his article into the ionosphere of absurdity. He spends the next couple thousand words relating, in excruciating detail, that he's developed a crush on Jewel. He gets nervous meeting her mother. He falls asleep at her side. He starts to believe that her lyrics mean something. In short, one of the most respected music critics in the world has written a goddamned Judy Blume novella. All of which could be considered merely cute were this a work of fiction. As it is an assigned piece of reportage, Strauss' weak-kneed paean becomes less winsome and more simply bizarre. On one hand, the article rather brazenly points out the effect the cult of celebrity has on normally intelligent writers; it blinds them to thought and invites them to suck. On the other, Strauss so readily assents to his subject's manipulation that the story's candor seems accidental. The result is both brutally honest and completely pathetic. The piece bills itself as a "search for the truth about Jewel"; ultimately, it ends up being truthful in a way that was almost certainly unintentional. At the beginning, it reads like satire. Right-thinking critics and readers have lately pointed to the celebrity profile as indisputable evidence of journalism's decline; these observers have justifiably found therein a suspicious resemblance to fawning publicity. Most such profiles adhere to a basic formula, especially in their opening paragraphs. To use the following recipe is to assure oneself of a lucrative magazine-writing career: journalist meets celebrity at some public place; journalist relates certain situational details about the celebrity that will later tie into some larger point about why said celebrity is -- no, seriously -- different than the rest; journalist and celebrity spend hours talking about, like, life and stuff. In this case, Strauss adheres to the formula so rigidly that it becomes self-parody. The place: the Four Seasons hotel in Manhattan. The relevant detail: Jewel orders sweetbreads (which leads to the clearly inevitable conclusion that "she is more adventurous and experimental than her music and poetry would lead one to believe"). The conversation: involves relativity, superficiality, and Jelly Bellys -- the last, of course, providing firm evidence that our world-weary star is still in touch with her inner child. Whatever his shortcomings, Strauss was once a guy whose intelligence and ambition were evident in most everything he wrote. So the irony argument begins to carry more weight as the story progresses and the presumably self-aware writer becomes increasingly trite. (Start with his observation that Jewel's physical imperfections "just make her more perfect"; end with his declaration that her family history "should not be summarized. It should be a college seminar.") Then he meets Jewel's mother. That would be the point where the story lapses from an arguably self-conscious badness to a type of badness that is far stranger, far more revealing, and just kind of creepy. The limited space herein simply cannot do justice to the minutiae of this second badness, but consider the following excerpt indicative of its quality: "She giggles at every other word, tells me how good I look and loops her arm around mine when we walk together. Something has changed since we last saw each other. She seems to trust me now. Were the European writers that bad? 'I was really nervous having dinner with your mom,' I tell her, explaining how it felt like meeting a girlfriend's parents. 'That is so cute, Neil,' she giggles. 'I didn't know you cared.' " Pretty soon, you've got Strauss laughing and crying during Jewel's songs. You've got the two laying platonically next to each other in bed, discussing Mormonism, negativity, and Jewel's angry side. You've got Jewel getting tickled by her mother. You've got celebrity encouraging journalist to write songs. And you've got Strauss concluding with the admission that he's "not laughing" at Jewel's lyrics any more. In sum, you've got a very, very good reason to puke. Here's an argument for why such honesty is not just passively lame but actively bad: The primary obligation of any writer -- journalist, novelist, whatever -- is to the reader. He (that's the royal "he") must entertain, inform, provoke thought, or some combination thereof. Whatever personal information he imparts must be relevant to some grander scheme that benefits not his own ego but the reader's mind (or at least both). And Strauss never bothers to engage the reader; the reason that he changed his mind about Jewel -- basically, because he got to flirt with her -- is so ridiculous that no reader could possibly sympathize with it. There's no convincing argument for her worth as a musician or poet, only a weak one for her worth as a conversationalist. And since few readers will ever speak word one to Jewel, what's left is overblown self-indulgence, a supposed point revealed as little more than thoughtless mime. So while the story does provide firm evidence of the depraved relationship between celebrity and journalist, it does so accidentally, strangely, and, in the end, rather pitifully. Oh, and about her music. In the story, Jewel herself admits that her debut Pieces of You "is not a good record." Strauss never quite gets around to mentioning what he thinks. *********************************************************************** Happy New Year! -=-Kookybaka-=- (my hooves are small, I know....) In a recent interview with MTV's Kurt Loder, Jewel said that one of the reasons director Ang Lee cast her in his upcoming civil war drama, "Ride with the Devil," was because he liked her famously crooked smile. "I guess if you wanted to be a standard pop chick," Loder said, "you'd go out and get your teeth fixed and stuff, but you've never done that. I guess it's sort of an endearing quality." "Is it endearing?" Jewel replied, "it's a bit embarrassing." "It's a bit endearing," he added, "but you've never wanted to change it?" "I don't know," she said, "I just never had the money before and now I don't have the time." "It might change your enunciation too, wouldn't it?" Loder asked. "I don't know," Jewel said, "I never thought about it. At my dentist the other day -- I was actually at my dentist's office -- he showed me pictures of what could happen to your teeth, if you don't take care of them. These rotten terrible pictures. I was like, 'I'll do anything you want ... show me where to sign.' I think dentists go to the same school as war heroes, they're like strategists of fear. It's awful." The J-Team has decided to go in another direction with Jewel's next video but it was interesting to see how each of you interpreted Jewel's song. With a new direction in mind, they've chosen not to pick a #1 out of the 10 submitted EDA scripts. So....here's what we're going to do. The submitted 10 writers of the 10 scripts that the EDA panelists (with Mike's & my help at the end) narrowed down as "The Top 10", will ALL WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS TO THE 1999 JEWEL CONCERT OF THEIR CHOICE. :-) These 10 people have already been notified personally & will be instructed on how to request their tickets.
