First the status updates: As you know, Jewel is in the studio & the sessions are going well for her new album. You'll soon be able to see photos from the sessions on the official website, so check periodically. As some of you know, the scheduled release date is November 17th if all goes according to plan. The VH1 Midnight Poetry Spots are over. 5 spots aired. The segment Jewel taped for CBS Sunday Morning has not yet aired & we don't have an air date. My best suggestion is to keep checking on Sunday mornings. This program airs at 9:00AM EST. It's still likely to run one of these next Sundays. Due to timing problems, Jewel still has not been able to send the 4 remaining answers to our "EDAS Interview Jewel" project. We will continue this & I apologize for the continued delay. You can blame me, because I've not followed up on this lately as I've been in & out of town & I prefered not to interupt her about this while she's focused on recording the new album. OK, onto some new stuff. Jewel is taping a poetry reading & interview for an upcoming Seventeen Magazine television special. The air date is not yet known, but I'll keep ya informed. Theres also another live online chat being setup in conjunction with the Teen People website. I'm not sure yet when this will be, but I was told it should be a better setup than previous chats. AOL folks can check for updates on this at keyword Teen People. This should be happening fairly soon. Hope everyone is doing well. Support the Living Room Tour! :-) MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Aug 8 15:14:05 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id PAA10760 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 8 Aug 1998 15:13:12 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199808081913.PAA10760@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: ABershaw@aol.com Date: 8 Aug 98 06:59:26 -0800 Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-More new book info & details Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, This was just posted (read below) on Ecto & has more info about the new book, "Solo: Women Singer Songwriters In Their Own Words", which features a chapter by Jewel. If you prefer to order this book locally, its Delta Publishers ISBN #0385324073. Price is $14.95 US dollars before any applicable discounts. This should help all those curious about it. Have a great weekend, MrBB Ecto Post: I received my copy of this 368-page softcover book in yesterday's mail and although I haven't sat down to read it cover to cover yet, it looks pretty good. It includes lots of black and white portraits of each artist. Here are the artists who tell about their lives and how they got started in music. In order of appearance: Sarah McLachlan/Shawn Colvin/Jonatha Brooke/Cassandra Wilson/ Ani DiFranco/Mary Lou Lord/Mary Chapin Carpenter/Suzanne Vega/ Holly Palmer/Joan Osborne/Lucy Kaplansky/Jewel/Rosanne Cash/ Dionne Farris/Sheryl Crow/Lucinda Williams/Catie Curtis/ Kate Campbell/Rosanne Raneri According to the authors, the books was written in response to the often-heard complaint that there is now a glut of female artists. Here's a brief excerpt from the introduction: "SOLO provides the space for each artist to exercise her singular way of saying things. Why should we assume that the experiences of Suzanne Vega, who grew up in East Harlem to the taunts of 'You're the whitest girl I've ever seen,' and those of Kate Campbell who was raised as the daughter of a socially progressive Baptist preacher in rural Mississippi, would somehow say the same things?.....It's this rich variety that defines these women who have so masterfuly responded to their worlds with indelible takes on what it means to be human. These artists are far more serious about their work than they are generally given credit for, however much their music is lauded, and more insightful about subjects as far-flung as politics, aesthetics, and love, both in and outside their songs, than we could know from short reviews crowded under attention-grabbing headlines. Whether it's dionne Farris speaking about the limitations she's faced......or Jewel reflecting on her unexpected celebrity..., the depth, intelligence, and self-searching expressed here are the sources, in such eclectic and provocative ways, for the music itself. It's no surprise that the writers who give our own emotions and experiences shape through their songs convey such substance and insight, as if implicitly rejecting the skewed values of a pop world more likely to notice a steel brassiere than a literate turn of phrase...." The authors are Emma Dodge Hanson and Marc Woodworth, who "live on a farm near Saratoga Springs, New York. Emma is a photographer whose portraits of artists and writers have appeared in The New York Times, Poets and Writers, USA Today, The Oxford American, and elsewhere. Marc is associated editor of Salmagundi and lectures in the Department of English at Skidmore College. His poems appear in The Paris Review and other magazines. This is their first book." Many things are going on beginning in a few weeks, so below you will find ALL the information on all the Home Concerts/EDA get-togethers coming up & who to contact if you'd like to join in. Musical events are scheduled on both coasts here in the USA & one up in Montreal, so this is a great opportunity for many EDAs to meet each other for the first time and be guaranteed a great night of music in the process. I know most of last years attendees will be back, but lets see many new faces join in! I personally think these LRT gigs are one of the best things to emerge from the EDA scene. The artists performing are amazingly talented. And all of you who miss (or dream of) seeing Jewel in her Innerchange days when everybody really listened & connected, all that is happenning right now here! Previous EDA attendees & hosts can testify to this! :-) MrBB Please save this email for future reference. Here's the schedule of gigs not to miss! The updated EDA schedule follows this post. Theres info here for guests, hosts & everyone else interested. Several LRT & non LRT gigs featuring other artists are going on in addition to the upcoming Lisa Sanders/Joy Eden Harrison LRT dates. I'm primarily speaking for the Joy & Lisa LRT, but most of this info also applies to all LRT gigs. What should I bring to an LRT? Other than yourselves, you need to bring a $10 donation for the musicians to offset their travel expenses, etc. It's also a good idea to have some extra cash on hand if you may enjoy purchasing an artists CD. At most LRT gigs, the artists do have tapes, CD's & sometimes tshirts available. Its always more enjoyable buying a CD from the artist directly for obvious reasons. On this upcoming LRT, Joy will have her first CD "Angel Town" & sneak-preview tapes of her new album freshly produced by Cindy Lee Berryhill. (Many of your favorite people are performing on this new album!) Lisa will also have her CD available & t-shirts, I think. Another good thing to bring if its an outdoor show, is lawn furniture or a blanket to sit on. Food & drink is usually welcome & you can check with your hosts about how best to help on that. Camera's, Camcorders & taping equipment are usually welcome too. Check with your hosts. If so, remember to have film & plenty of batteries & blanks, if this applies to you. (and get in touch with me, so we can add copies to the vast ever growing LRT Archive!) Thats pretty much all there is to it! Oh, & for any hosts wondering--Joy & Lisa are not vegetarians. (Joy was impressed that people are asking though! :-) So you can utilize that info accordingly. One helpful hint from me, though. As much as everyone loves pizza, its not that great every night of the week, if ya know what I mean. ;-) I sincerely hope many of you check out these LRT gigs. As you know, Jewel has been in the studio for a few weeks now working on her new album. Although you've read in the media that this is a "holiday/xmas" type album, thats not really the case. It will have a "winter focus" to it, but Spirituality, Inspiration and Love are the real "themes" of Jewel's forthcoming album. Jewel has a long list of songs both new & old to choose from. Several older songs, that many EDAs know of, are being worked on. One is the beautiful duet with Lenedra on "Face Of Love". This was originally written for the "Romeo & Juliet" movie soundtrack but rejected at the time. This was a major highlight of "The Jewelstock Concerts" & sure to be welcomed by EDAs in official release. Another song being condsidered is one of the first songs Jewel ever wrote-- a lullabye called "Raven" that has not been performed live in several years. "Been Down So Long" & "Innocence Maintained" are also getting new studio treatments. If all goes according to plan, this long awaited 2nd album will be released by Atlantic on November 17th. Next week, BiBi & West are going to the sessions to get some pictures of Jewel in the studio. Some of these exclusive photos will soon be up on the official website for your enjoyment. Start checking there shortly. Extensive video production work is also going on with the hours & hours of archived Jewel video. The 1st official Jewel video material should also see release by years end. Also check the official website (http://www.jeweljk.com/) for some merchandise specials going on right now. See ya'all next week. Enjoy your weekend, MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Aug 14 09:07:48 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id JAA10088 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 14 Aug 1998 09:07:23 -0400 (EDT) Received: from imo13.mx.aol.com (imo13.mx.aol.com [198.81.17.3]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id IAA09459; Fri, 14 Aug 1998 08:40:03 -0400 (EDT) From: ABershaw@aol.com Received: from ABershaw@aol.com by imo13.mx.aol.com (IMOv14_b1.1) id SFUTa11435; Fri, 14 Aug 1998 08:39:01 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <18bc9dec.35d42fe6@aol.com> Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 08:39:01 EDT To: Jewel-news@smoe.org, Jewel@smoe.org, DuckOfPrey@aol.com, ducksoup@spectra.net, CONNELL@taurus.cs.lmco.com, poj@zoonation.com, xenomorph@sprynet.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-VH1-An Evening With Steve Poltz Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 3.0 for Mac sub 84 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi again, In my "Jewel album update post", I completely forgot to mention that on Tuesday, September 1st, VH1 will air "An Evening With Steve Poltz" at 11PM EST. As I said only a few days ago, there will be more net-media articles based on nothing more than rumors & speculation & my advice is to ignore them. Websites like Rocktropolis & Music News Of the World are publishing pieces claiming Jewel's album may be delayed & also claiming its format keeps changing, but they are merely speculating. You'll notice that articles published by both these sources fail to name their "inside" information sources. This is almost always a sure sign to take these articles with a major grain of salt. The reality is that she hasn't intended on doing a Xmas album, but rather Jewel's intention is to focus on "spirituality, inspiration & love" as the loose theme. Yes, these themes are somewhat related to "winter", but certainly go way beyond a "holiday based album". The only thing "holiday based", is that they are working extremely hard to have it available in plenty of time for the holidays. Many artists release albums in November & December every year. Its a common time to push new releases. Does this make them "holiday" albums themewise--NO. Also, it's a mindless statement to say albums "may be delayed". Of course its true, because anything "may happen", but these published statements mean nothing really. Everything I've heard so far is optimistic that it will see an on schedule, November 17th release. If not, very shortly thereafter. The title of the album has not yet been decided, but I'll let you know as soon as I know. For EDAs that caught Jewel live in 1997, you'll recognize some of the newer songs that are tentively to be included, but a few songs will be new to all of you. I've seen a partial list of songs recorded & some of her best recent material is included. One tune that has not been mentioned previously that I'm personally thrilled about is "Barselona". This is definately one of her most powerful songs. Some of you heard Jewel sing this at last years EDA Thanksgiving Concert at Java Joe's. It was written during last years 2nd Europe Tour & has been previously refered to as "Let It Rip, Let It Fly". It's one of those songs that she begins singing in her lower register & then her voice soars on the "Let It Rip, Let Fly" chorus. I think its one of her strongest songs yet & I was extremely happy to hear its to be included. I guarantee you'll all love this one. Very powerful! Also check out Jewel's official site soon for photos & more info from these current album sessions. BiBi & West are taking lotsa photos & some will be up on the site soon. Theres also some great merchandise specials going on at the Jewel Store right now. Check out these things at: http://www.jeweljk.com/ Now onto some other updates. I've been told they have decided not to do the AOL Teen People live chat that was mentioned a few weeks ago. So that has been cancelled. They are still interested in online chats, but are striving to find a better, more intelligent setup that will be more enjoyable for everyone. Touring plans are now being determined with a possibility of a few weeks of live dates in the United States toward the end of November. No specific dates or venues are available yet, so please refrain from asking. I'll keep you updated about that & the EDAs will, as always, be the first to know. Here's some specific upcoming things of interest for you: September 1st- A new book called "Solo: Women Singer Songwriters In Their Own Words" will hit bookstores. This features a chapter written by Jewel. This book is compiled by Marc Woodworth and Emma Hanson and is published by Delta Publishers. I think price is $14.95 US dollars (pre any discounts) & will be available from any bookstore. If you are outside the US or would like to pre-order it locally, the ISBN # is 0385324073. September 1st- Jewel's close friend & occasional collaborator Steve Poltz will be featured in his own half hour VH1 TV special called "An Evening With Steve Poltz". This was recently filmed at one of his gigs at Schuba's in Chicago & will air at 11:00PM EST on VH1. September 8th-Jewel recorded an interview for a Seventeen Magazine TV Special called "Seventeen's Superstars". This will air on the Warner Brothers Network at 9:00PM EST. November 17th- Scheduled Release date of Jewel's new album. Many have also been asking about Jewel's movie, "Ride With The Devil" & the book its based on. Last I heard, the movie will hopefully hit theaters worldwide sometime next March of 1999. The book that this movie is based on, is called "Woe, To Live On" written by Daniel Woodrell. This title is out of print but can be found. I read it 6 months ago & enjoyed it very much. It was published by Henry Holt & Co. It's publication date was originally July 87 with a reprinting in 89. For those trying to track down a copy, it's ISBN # is 0805002839. I expect it to be republished again, likely to coincide with the movie release. Also, this weekend, Jewel's Grandpa Yule Kilcher celebrates his 80th birthday. So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY YULE! Thats everything I can think of this morning. Hope that helps calm any fears about the album & brings you up to date. Have a great weekend & seeya soon at the LRT gigs! :-) MrBB ****************************************** For LRT (Living Room Tour) dates & other gig info by artists you'll enjoy, take yourself to: http://thespis.com/crashboy/EDArtists/EDArtists.htm ****************************************** From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed Aug 26 21:03:25 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id VAA11953 for jewel-news-outgoing; Wed, 26 Aug 1998 21:03:24 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199808270103.VAA11953@smoe.org> Date: Wed, 26 Aug 1998 15:08:33 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-NEW Jewel TV Info & album info :-) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, I've had many inquiries about when that CBS Sunday Morning interview with Jewel will air. In case you're already confused, the day previous to the MTV Fanatic taping, Jewel did an interview for CBS Sunday Morning which has not yet aired. This will air Sunday, September 6th at 9:00am EST on CBS. Also, here's other Jewel-related TV coming up: Tuesday, September 1st- Jewel's close friend & occasional collaborator Steve Poltz will be featured in his own half hour VH1 TV special called "An Evening With Steve Poltz". This was recently filmed at one of his gigs at Schuba's in Chicago & will air at 11:00PM EST on VH1. Sunday, September 6th- Jewel's 7/6/98 Interview with "CBS Sunday Morning" This program airs from 9:00AM (EST) to 10:30am on CBS. Tuesday, September 8th-Jewel recorded an interview for a Seventeen Magazine TV Special called "Seventeen's Superstars". This will air on the Warner Brothers Network at 9:00PM EST. Also, I've seen both books people have been asking about at Borders now, so I assume both are now in stock & easily available from any bookstore in the USA. Here's the info on those: "Solo: Women Singer Songwriters In Their Own Words" This features a chapter written by Jewel. This book is compiled by Marc Woodworth and Emma Hanson and is published by Delta Publishers. I think price is $16.95 US dollars (pre any discounts) & is available from any bookstore. If you are outside the US or would like to order it locally, the ISBN # is 0385324073. "Woe, To Live On" Written by Daniel Woodrell. The movie "Ride With The Devil" is based on this novel. I read it 6 months ago & enjoyed it very much. The movie, featuring Jewel as the female lead, Sue Lee Shelly, will likely be in theaters March of 99. The book is published by Henry Holt & Co. For those trying to track down a copy, the ISBN # is 0805002839. And finally, just to see if ya read this far, many EDA Vets will be most happy to know that Jewel has rerecorded FOUR, yep four of those long lost "Bearsville 96 Sessions" songs. (maybe she's been listening.....) These four are up for consideration on the album she is currently working on: 1. Fat Boy (known to many as "Fragile Flame" -a solo acoustic version) 2. Innocence Maintained 3. Absence Of Fear 4. The Face Of Love <-Yeeeha! Thats about it for today. Hop on the Living Room Tour & play nice with the EDA projects! :-) MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Aug 28 12:27:35 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id MAA05008 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 28 Aug 1998 12:27:07 -0400 (EDT) Received: from spectra.net (root@blue.spectra.net [204.177.130.1]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id MAA05004; Fri, 28 Aug 1998 12:27:00 -0400 (EDT) Received: from default (pm141-131.spectra.net [204.177.131.141]) by spectra.net (8.8.3/8.8.3) with SMTP id MAA11090; Fri, 28 Aug 1998 12:27:08 -0400 Message-Id: <199808281627.MAA11090@spectra.net> X-Sender: ducksoup@spectra.net X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.0.2 Date: Fri, 28 Aug 1998 12:24:04 -0400 To: jewel@smoe.org, jewel-news@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel - Intimate And Interactive on the Bravo network Saturday - a reminder :-) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi everyone :-) This is just a reminder that on Saturday August 29th, the Bravo network will be airing the rare Much Music's "Jewel - Intimate and Interactive" at 4:00pm eastern USA time.
