Please Email me privately unless you feel fellow list members may benefit from what you have to reply/suggest. I also sent this to Jewel-news to show the subscribers of that list who are soley on that list and would really like to be back on Jewel or Jewel-digest that a conscious effort is soon to be under way to make jewel@smoe.org something they'd maybe come back to :) I welcome and want any feedback from them also :) The crux of this post: Soon, all subscribers to Jewel@smoe and Jewel-digest will be getting Emails from me via Jewel-announce about 2 to 4 times a week. These emails have been in the planning stages for about 4 months now, as they were half of the reason Jewel-announce was invented by Jeff Wasilko and myself. One reason you've already seen is for the announcement of late breaking news about Jewel and/or her appearances, as we know many digest readers fall behind in their reading and may miss out on something they'd rather not have missed. Another usage that was not intended originally, but it was used for was when Mark/Crunch announced the James Paul Kalanick Trust as a way to give Jewel what she deeply wanted for her birthday. We felt is was an important enough and noble enough effort that we wanted the digest-reader to get a seperate Email instead of perhaps missing it by not reading the digest the post ended up in. The other intended usage of Jewel-announce and what this post is really announcing, is for a rotating schedule of postings about Email and/or mailing list netiquette, a mini list-FAQ, a Jewel FAQ, list "do's and don'ts" (in a way, netiquette also), Jewel discography, Jewel history etc. Netiquette: Through no fault of anyone (just being unaware is the usual reason), alot of universally standard netiquette gets 'violated' on this list. Because of that, Jeff and I get alot of complaints and questions about netiqutte (and the at times lack thereof) on this list. The intent of this schedule of rotating posts is to both educate the new and unaware, remind those that have forgotten and to make this list (hopefully) a better read for all who now partake in it and to bring back some who left. Some of the netiquette & other stuff to be covered by these posts include: 1) Quoting too much of a previous post 2) Posting "one-liners" (especially too many of them) 3) Posting to the list what should be a private Email or perhaps to a few people, not the 1100 that now make up Jewel and Jewel-digest 4) Some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) 5) Looooooong signature files 6) Some commonly needed and requested URLS to Jewel websites and EDA websites and alot more. :) The main reason Jewel-announce is to be used for this communication rather than the regular jewel@smoe postings is that each post thru jewel@smoe is archived twice on Jeffs' hardware, once as an individual post, once in digest-form. Jewel-announce is not archived and thus will not permanently take up space. Another reason we are doing this in the first place (bring people back) can be best shown by throwing some numbers at you. (I hope this will make sense :) Last July, the list consisted of only jewel@smoe and Jewel-digest. Jewel@smoe (the regular version of the list, aka 'loose' mail) consisted of 69% of the subscriptions of the two versions. When Jewel-news was formed in late August of last year, many folks went over to that list as a supplement to the digest, but many went to that list soley. Last Christmas Jewel@smoe consisted of 46% of the subscriptions of the combined jewel@smoe and Jewel-digest numbers, down from 69% last July. Factoring in Jewel-news, the number was 34%. The number for Jewel@smoe is now 42% of those that sub to either Jewel or Jewel-digest and 25% of the total of all three lists (Down from 34% last Christmas). In other words, percentage-wise, less and less EDAs sub to the loose mail version every day, while we are gaining 8 to 15 new subsriptions a week. Yes, I/we know many folks sub to more than one version, but these are the only numbers we have readily available. I studied the Jewel-news 'roster' the other day. Many EDAs from last summer are ONLY on that list, and I know many were driven away by the volume and the netiquette problems that make it a longer process to read the list mail each day. Alot of these folks are "Hall of Fame" list members, folks who were just as active in the list then as today's active ones are now People that helped organize JewelStock, that ran tape trees etc. Many of course are just 'newer' list members who went to Jewel-news for the same reasons. My point? Jeff and I want them back. (I want Jeff back for that matter, he's on Jewel-news only too) Other EDAs want them back. At the same time, we *dearly* want those people that make the list what it is now to still love the list we are going to strive for. There *is* a happy medium, one that more people overall can be happy with. *Now* is the time to do this. This list is very likely going to have another massive growth spurt in the late summer as Foolish Games climbs the charts and more people discover Jewel and this list, especially when the schools and colleges start up again. (We picked up 300 from Christmas to early February as schools re-opened and many new computers were under trees.) I don't want to see 15 monthly Emails like "Get me off this d*mn list and do it now!!" anymore, no one does. (Jeff and I get private emails demanding "off the list", not just the ones posted to the list) Let's all practice better netiquette. Let's all practice better content of our posts to the list. Let's make us a happier family. Yes we are a 'family' and (some) NJC makes us that family, for which I am oh so grateful. However, all should keep in mind that for every post you send to jewel@smoe.org, it's going to over 1120 subscribers. If you feel what you have to say is worth something to alot of them, of course post it by all means. If it's really going to interest only one to a scant few, please consider sending it private to that one or those few. Possible/partial 'flame Mike material' here: I have to be honest here. (Partially opinion, partially facts) Even though one EDA wrote to the list that he liked this post, I got 3 complaints that mentioned the "a 5 year old bit me today" post from yesterday, among other topics. Jeff I'm sure did too. I'm NOT picking on the author of that post. It's just that it's the most recent example of posts, or 'similar/kind of' posts that Jeff, who runs at least 25 NON-Jewel lists, and I get emails about. This is in conjunction with the *few hundred* administrative Emails Jeff gets each day, and I may soon get too if I am insane enough to moderate Jewel@smoe when Jeff is on vacation/out of the USA. Some of the complaints he & I get are justified and we listen. Some we do not. Such as complaints concerning posts about EDA gatherings and reviews of such. MANY EDAs love these posts, as it IS what is the *character* builder of this list. It's this EDA familyhood that makes this list unique and can make it better if we all do our part. :) Again, as I said at the beginning of this post, I welcome and want any feedback and/or suggestions, Your fellow EDA, Mike P.S. My first post will not be a "rotater", it will be a one-time post which was published in a special edition of PC Novice magazine. It's on Emails and netiquette in general and comunicating with the world via your computer. It's long, but it is a worthwhile read I hope each EDA at least reads when I post it or save it to read on a rainy day :) I'll be posted tomorrow. /\//\\///\\\////\\\\/////\\\\\//////\\\\\\/////\\\\\////\\\\///\\\//\\/\ \ Attention new list members! These booklets contain poetry, writing, vintage & recent photos as well as info about the tour itself. They are 14 pages in length including front & back cover. They were designed by Jewel's assistant & close friend BiBi Bielat. Here's the instructions. Please follow them EXACTLY in order for this to be as easy as possible for us. Cost of the booklets are $10 in American dollars. (same as at the shows) All booklets will be sent 1st class unless you want & pay for Priority mail. All you need to do is send me a standard size manilla envelope (9.5" x 13") that is self adressed & with at least $1.50 in stamps already on it. (Note: DO NOT use postal meter postage! Only stamps. Add an extra 32 cent stamp for each extra booklet ordered up to 5 booklets.) Include $10 cash (NO CHECKS) or money order for each booklet ordered. We will simply put however many booklets you paid for in the envelope & send it back to you. Its that easy. If you want the booklets faster, you can send a Priority mailer with a $3 stamp on it instead of a manilla envelope with $1.50 on it. If you want more than 5 of them, please use a Priority mailer--I can fit up to ten of them in there. Send your self adressed pre-postaged 9.5" x 13" manilla envelope, with $10 cash (or a $10 money order made out to Alan Bershaw) for each booklet ordered to: Jewel Tour Book c/o MrBB P.O. I will be sending Lenedra a bank check for all booklets ordered & if I cannot personally cash your money order, then I cannot send the booklet & must return your order. There's less than 55 left presently. I'll keep the list posted if it looks like they'll sell out to prevent having to return any requests. Such is the case with this compilation, out today. It adds nothing to the Batman saga but offers enough sizzling alternapop to thaw Mr. Freeze. The Smashing Pumpkins, Soul Coughing, R.E.M., and promising newcomer Lauren Christy contribute standouts on a themeless but uniformly fine collection. The 15 tracks vary dramatically, from the jaunty rap of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's LOOK INTO MY EYES and pop techno of Arkarna's HOUSE ON FIRE to the aching balladry of Jewel's FOOLISH GAMES and trippy electronica of Underworld's MOANER. ----------------- From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Jun 5 08:29:36 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id IAA05066; Thu, 5 Jun 1997 08:29:36 -0400 Received: from emout07.mail.aol.com by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id IAA04945; Thu, 5 Jun 1997 08:22:50 -0400 From: ABershaw@aol.com Received: (from root@localhost) by emout07.mail.aol.com (8.7.6/8.7.3/AOL-2.0.0) id IAA11181; Thu, 5 Jun 1997 08:21:48 -0400 (EDT) Date: Thu, 5 Jun 1997 08:21:48 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <970605082148_-362932078@emout07.mail.aol.com> To: jewel@smoe.org, jewel-news@smoe.org, ABershaw@aol.com Subject: Jewel News: MrBB-Jewel's schedule through the end of the year Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 2784 Hi again, Since the update I sent last night, I've been hit with many upcoming schedule requests, so once again, here's what I know regarding Jewel's upcoming schedule through the end of the year. You'll find some answers to many current EDA questions. Read on..... 1.)Upcoming TV: The only things planned presently are the MTV Movie Awards this month which you already know about. (Being filmed on 6/7/97 & broadcast at 9PM EST on 7/12/97) Also see following info about Rockfest 97. 2.)The NEW "Foolish Games" video: The new video will be shot on June 23rd. Final concept details are being ironed out now. Expect its release toward the end of July or early August at the soonest. 3.) Netherlands Park Pop Festival 6/29/97 & Montreaux Jazz Festival 7/12/97: Jewel has not been booked to perform at either of these festivals. 4.) Rockfest 97 on 6/21/97: Everything is still under negotiation but this concert will likely be broadcast in some form on every media known to man. Both MTV & VH1 are planning specials on it. Major radio networks are working out broadcast details. It will likely be simulcast into cyberspace. A double CD is also being discussed. 5.) The voice of Epiphany, an animated angel in "Burn, A Love Story": Jewel said she was asked about this backstage once and said it sounded interesting to her. Lenedra has not been contacted but Inga may have had a preliminary contact from them. Nothing definite has ever been set up & discussion with Jewel isn't even ongoing at this point. Jewel likes the idea of doing an animated voice though & thinks it would be fun. 6.) Plans for after the Lilith Fair & following the headline USA tour: Jewel will go to Hong Kong and Japan the first 10 days of October which will immediately be followed by another European tour, with larger venues from mid October to mid November. Dates will not be announced for some time. 7.) The recent European tour The Europe tour was a great success & they were pleased with the press and radio response and glad to see EDAs at almost all the shows! :-) There you have it. And for all those people worried about Jewel's sleeping habits, they arrived home safely & Jewel is sleeping comfortably in her own bed tonight. :-) Best wishes, Alan(MrBB) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Jun 5 08:40:52 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id IAA05296; Thu, 5 Jun 1997 08:40:52 -0400 Received: from pop.uky.edu by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id MAA24613; Wed, 4 Jun 1997 12:25:06 -0400 Received: from pop.uky.edu ([128.163.53.35]) by pop.uky.edu (8.8.4/(UKY.POP.1.4)) with SMTP id MAA19724 for ; Wed, 4 Jun 1997 12:24:01 -0400 (EDT) Date: Wed, 4 Jun 1997 12:24:01 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <2.2.16.19970604122400.21bf86dc@pop.uky.edu> X-Sender: tdmanl1@pop.uky.edu X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Pro Version 2.2 (16) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" To: jewel-news@smoe.org From: "T.Manley" Subject: Jewel News: CD/VIDEO: Wizard of Oz Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 651 From: TNT@turner.com Date: Wed, 4 Jun 1997 10:47:44 -0400 Subject: Re: Wizard of Oz: Dreams Do Come True To: tdmanl1@pop.uky.edu Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: cc:Mail note part You can call either Movies Unlimited (800-523-0823) or Turner Home Entertainment (which may or may not exist anymore, in the light of the Time-Warner merger) at 800-672-6202. Well, if we were in the 'Land Of Confusion', we'd be partying in the capitol by now! First off, we would like to apologize here and now for any difficulties fans may have experienced in purchasing tickets in advance for the August 15th Lilith Fair show in Toronto. There appears to have been some confusion between what we originally asked to be able to do as far as an advance on-sale date, and what actually happened. We understand the frustration of the fans and we're sorry. Actually, only a limited number of tickets went on-sale for this show, as the rest of them will be available on the official sale date of June 14th. From this you will see and hear a *lot* of print and radio ads happening in advance of that date, so keep your eyes and ears peeled. As far as who else is playing at this show (besides those artists already listed), the final artist to be confirmed is Meredith Brooks. And tickets are STILL available from the pre-announced batch of tickets. Again, we apologize for any inconveniences or difficulties due to this situation. thanks for reading Armand S. "I don't think cynicism's smarter, it's just safer," declares a characteristically defiant JEWEL, on the subject of the raw, heartfelt songs that grace her debut LP, 'Pieces of You'. And she can afford to be smug. Two of those songs, the uplifting 'Who Will Save Your Soul?' and the tender 'You Were Made for Me' have recently shot their way up the US Top Ten. She's currently on the cover of Rolling Stone. She's been feted by the likes of Neil Young and Bob Dylan (who let her tweak his nose), and even Smokin' Bill Clinton had her 'round for a bit of a campfire singalong at one of his inaugural balls. Things are clearly on the up for the 23-year-old singer-songwriter who was, not so long ago, eking a demoralising living waiting tables in San Diego and living on carrots and peanut butter in the back of her van. Is the smell of success sweet?=20 "Even half an hour of a bad show is better than three hours of waitressing," she grimaces. "But yeah, it's fun to see all the people kiss my butt that said would they play my records of the radio over their dead bodies." Two and a half years of hard touring =D0 consisting of "opening up for punk and goth bands and playing tiny clubs and hating life; doing 40 cities every 30 days and driving myself everywhere in a rental car" =D0 later, Jewel's reward has come in the shape of four million album sales, and a devoted fanbase coast to coast. "I'm not real comfortable with it,' she sighs, with the pained air of a lo-fi shrinking violet. "But a friend of mine who is a movie actor said 'it's an adjustment well worth making'."=20 Ah. That'll be Sean Penn, with whom Jewel has had a much-publicised affair. But enough scurrilous tongue-wagging; what about the none-less-rock poems that litter the album sleeve? (One is called 'Las Vegas', and it's great: "Women who suck/their cigarettes/as though they were/giving their/hatred head".) Why are these tacked on as an afterthought? A torrent of sincerity wells up: "It was more out of humility than an afterthought. I've always been such an accidental writer. I never thought I was a songwriter. I never thought I was a poet. Bukowski's a poet! Jesus, I'm a kid living in a car!"=20 by Kitty Empire=20 From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Jun 6 08:30:20 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id IAA17525; Fri, 6 Jun 1997 08:30:20 -0400 Message-Id: <199706061230.IAA17525@jane.smoe.org> Date: 6 Jun 97 11:31:12 +0100 From: Chris Groves To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: Jewel in NME in UK Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 379 There's a small piece about Jewel in this weeks NME on page 13. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1664 Well, seventeen has an annual reader's poll, and this year when I sent in my survey, I remember being disappointed that Jewel wasn't nominated in any of the categories. But... there was room to write in people, and a whole crapload of people must have done that w/ Jewel, because she is named the solo artist of the year, and for music newcomer of the year, "Sitting pretty in third place: Jewel." There is also a section in it called "Star Power," which has 20 new actors, musicians and such who seventeen seems to think have staying power. there's a picture of Jewel sitting in the back of a blue VW van w/ a guitar by her side, and a little article. Here's the article: It's hard to imagine that Jewel--with her sweet, soothing voice and heart-shaped face--has a dark side. But the 22-year-old singer has enough grit to rival Courtney Love. She grew up in Alaska in a log cabin with no electricity or running water, camped out in a van when she couldn't pay the rent as a struggling singer and was even in a rap group called La Creme. But it wasn't her hip-hop skills that put her in the spotlight--it was folk songs like "You Were Meant for Me" and "Who Will Save Your Soul." These singles became Top 10 hits, with a little help from MTV and VH1. Fans anxious for her next album--out in early '98--will have to get their Jewel fix with a re-recorded version of "Foolish Games" on the Batman & Robin soundtrack this summer. As you might expect, it's a gem. -Angie Maximo Ok, just thought I'd share. :) I know it's a stupid article, but that's pretty typical of seventeen. BTW, all of this is in the new July issue of seventeen. *hugs* Emily From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Jun 6 08:38:35 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id IAA17717; Fri, 6 Jun 1997 08:38:34 -0400 Message-Id: <199706061238.IAA17717@jane.smoe.org> Date: Thu, 05 Jun 1997 23:34:44 +0200 From: Jorgen Van Geffen To: Jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: JEWEL IN DUTCH MAGAZINE.../'FOOLISH GAME' PROMO Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 987 Hello my fellow EDA's, Just wanted to say that a major Dutch magazine (De nieuwe Revue) spend 6=20 pages on Jewel... (the pic on the front was the last promo shot, with jewel wearing a black jacket with her hair down with a black choker on her neck). the next stop was RainyDay Records.. they had one that actually included "bonus tracks" of "God's Gift To Woman" and others and credited as being "ripped off promo the promo cd 'Save The Linoleum'". I forgot what the date of the main show was, but the pic on the front was the new promo shot with jewel's hair pulled back in a blue silk shirt. So, that's the news on these cd's... and - no - don's ask, i will not being picking these up for anyone, not even myself. -rusty you can reach RUSTY at: agentorange2@juno.com or rusty@poe.org see my links page on the web & sign the guestbook! ~ http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palms/5226/ Check out Abra Moore. One this batch runs out it will probably be at least a month to get enough (50) orders for the minimum order from the printer. So if you have already ordered send your check soon. If you are just ordering act quickly. original message: The EDA Shirt is here!!! Finally, The T-Shirt Guy (tm) has returned with a new, better than ever "Official" EDA T-Shirt. Last year, the Everyday Angels wanted to make a shirt so we could easily spot each other at concerts. Designs were submitted, idea were exchanged. I became The T-Shirt Guy (tm) and was in charge of the project. Then the EDA world was turned upside-down with the announcement of JewelStock. The JS shirt satisfied the need and the EDA shirt was put aside. People never forgot, however, and have been asking me when was I going to finish the EDA shirt. Well, now I have my act together and a new design (which has Jewel and Lenedra's blessing) and I am ready to make the shirt available to the list. The shirt can be viewed and ordered over the web at http://www.cybercom.net/~pjk/EDA (I should have a couple alternative sites up soon if in case there are any more problems with my server) or if you do not have web access simply email at this address for all the information on the shirt (design, ordering, etc.). If you would also like a jpeg of the design just ask. If you have any questions feel free to email me. There's been many great EDA parties around the country. Some of these had incredible entertainment provided by other San Diego area musicians such as The Rugburns, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Elizabeth Hummel & Gregory Page. (All friends of Jewel, by the way) In the case of the Hot Dog Festival (HDF), thrown by the Morales Family in Dana Point, Ca, Steve & Jeff (aka Stinky) from The Rugburns dropped by & played a short but wonderfully unique set. There's many brand new songs (some still have unidentified titles) & those who were there can testify it was quite unlike any Rugburns show of late. Shortly after that, an impromtu EDA Cafe (EDAC) was thrown together at The Snyder family's home in Boston,Ma. Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel cancelled a gig in Albany & joined us for an incredible night of music & EDA hilarity. I'm sure Cindy Lee & Elizabeth will agree it was a highlight of their tour. It was certainly the longest gig of the tour! (I'd also like to say that any hardcore "Pet Sounds/Smile era Brian Wilson" fans will be absolutely blown away by Cindy Lee's new "keyboard" material! I personally love "Antarctica", "Missing Link","Aquamarine" & "She Rides The Wild White Horse" more than any other songs I've heard by anyone this year!) I plan on distributing (free of charge, of course) the 1st two volumes of a new ongoing tape tree series that will contain all the performances from both of these events. These particular EDA events are becoming legendary & thus the name "Future Folklore"..... These recordings will be different than the elaborate authorized Jewel recordings that we've treed in the past. Both of these events were recorded without the use of a mixing desk & are more reflective of the actual events. The music is still crystal clear but you also hear the EDA interaction (as well as the birds & ocean at HDF!). Tegan Godwin made the "ambiant" HDF recording & its really quite nice & captures some of the spirit of this historically significant EDA gathering. At EDAC, Phil & I collaborated on last minute equipment, but it worked out well. We ran a seperate mic on vocals, one on instruments & one on the room so everything was captured clearly. (If any techies are curious about the recording techniques utilized, write to me privately.) Its also important to note that the musicians have all been incredibly generous enough to authorize the release of these recordings for this project. I have two goals for this project: I certainly hope to turn more EDAs on to these other San Diego artists. They can all benefit from our continued support. But more than that, I want to share a little of that "x factor" that happens when EDAs get together. There's something very special going on that I want to see continued. Lovable Lawyer Larry said it best: "We all began as fans of Jewel & then became fans of each other". It's looking like Mike is gonna take the big plunge & administrate this free tape tree once again so that's now together. Dennis Harris is busy with j-card design & I'm sure they'll be mind blowing, as usual. He was at both events & has many photos from both to incorporate into the j-card graphics. These volumes of "Future Folklore" will consist of two 100 minute cassettes. Instructions will be posted in a few weeks & then sign-up will begin. This tree will be different & we're working out exact procedure still. It's very important to me to include the Rugburns list & the CLB list, as well as the EDAs this time. Logistics are being worked on. (Please wait for these instructional posts BEFORE requesting copies or volunteering participation in this tree.) Following this message is the tentative track listings. This music is really something special. If this is successful, I'm willing to donate my resources to continue this series on an ongoing basis. I'm hoping "Future Folklore" Volumes 1 & 2 will be enthusiastically recieved. If nothing else, I sincerely hope this series will help encourage more events like this in the future. Then for another section on hot "new" celebs she was mentioned with a nice picture in her van (not sure if it is "The Van").. Plus for those cardboard cd adds there was a picture of her (not the cover of the album but one I don't think I've seen anywhere).... Another thing I found recently was in the travel section of my local newspaper (Times Union).. some 10 year old kid wrote about his trip to London (the reason I read it.. this is where I plan to live 10 years from now :::dreaming:::) He mentioned how he went to thr Royal Albert Hall and just happened to see Johny Cash (*hint*hint*hint*)... it really hit me when I read that.. There is a picture of Jewel, the caption being, "Jewel, whose 'Amen' helped an addict 'through the worst times,' uses that incident to remind her how 'music touches human lives.' " I know I've seen the picture before, but I can't recall where. I think it might bea promo shot. The article concludes -- Perhaps what inspires fans is best summed up by singer Jewel's experience. "I used to have this voice mail where you could call and find out where I was singing," she says. "I had just put my album out and this guy called and left me a message. He said 'I've been locked in my room for six days and I'm trying to quit heroin.' His voice was just shaking. "And he said, 'It's really bad right now, but I keep listening to your song "Amen" and saying to myself over and over, "My flesh is in hell. My flesh is in hell." I just really want to thank you for writing the song. "Whenever I get frustrated or down," Jewel says, "I always think of that and think, 'God, music touches human lives.' " I also noticed that Acoustic Guitar Online (http://www.acguitar.com) has finally put the July issue w/ Jewel on the cover up on the web. Just thought y'all might wanna know. The LAST d*mn thing I wanted in the video of this *amazing* heart wrenching song was Arnold Schwartzenegger, Gotham City and the Bat-friggin-mobile. :( Argggggghhhhhhh :( The horror......the horror......... JEWEL Pieces of You Growing up in Alaska, Jewel had very few luxuries - no shower, no TV and an icy outhouse for a bathroom. But courtesy of her parents, an Alaskan singer/songwriter duo, there was always music and singing. It was in her senior year of high school that she took up the guitar and first began to write songs. She had no desire to go to college and no desire for a 9-to-5 job. So she pursued her music dream by moving to California, living in a van and playing at a San Diego coffeehouse. Jewel is considered one of the hottest singers in music today. Her debut album, Pieces of You, features the hit songs "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "You Were Meant For Me". Inside is a story that should interest all the EDA's... "Jewel's Web-based fans have even organized a group called the Every Day Angels -- with their own Web sites. "I talk to the Every Day Angels (EDA) a lot," says Jewel. "They show up at my shows with little signs and blue guitars with little EDAs painted on them. When I was recording in Woodstock, they asked if they all got there would I put on a free concert? I said sure! So all these EDAs that have known each other for two years -- since the beginning of my album -- all met through the computer. 'Jewelstock' they called it. They drove from Missouri, San Francisco, everywhere, to come to Jewelstock, and I put on two shows for them." What a wonderful tribute! Thanks, Cindy Lee!!! This little EDA event was done on just 36 hours' notice! Just think what we can do if we have 37 hours' notice!! ;-) EDAs in the News >From The San Diego Union Tribune Wednesday, June 11, 1997: BERRYHILL PROMISES TO DEBUT NEW SONGS by George Varga Pop Music Critic <---(this is a one-time only fair use of a copyrighted newsworthy article; not to be used for commercial purposes or distributed without permission of The San Diego Union-Tribune) (too bad I can't send the wonderful photograph, captioned "Cindy Lee Berryhill -- New musical vistas.") San Diego Music fans will have two opportunities to hear Cindy Lee Berryhill perform this weekend. Friday at 9 p.m., the acclaimed singer-songwriter will do a solo concert at Java Joe's in Ocean Beach, 4994 Newport Ave. (619-523-0356). Saturday at 7 p.m., she will be featured on National Public Radio's "Mountain Stage" program, which airs locally on KPBS 89.5 FM. Both Performances come on the heels of her recently concluded seven-week U.S. tour. It included an April 20 show at New York's Knitting Factory, which was aired live on the Internet, and an April 27 show in the West Virginia town of Huntington, where her "Mountain Stage" appearance was recorded. "It was a really cool lineup," said Berryhill, who shared the "Mountain Stage" stage with John Prine, Alex Chilton, and Jill Sobule. "At the end of the night, we all did a sing-along on the traditional folk tune 'Oh Death,' which seemed strangely appropriate because Allen Ginsberg had just died." Best known as a singer who plays guitar, Berryhill plans to debut a slew of new material Java Joe's on which she will play piano -- in a manner. "I don't have a piano, so I have a toy one, a Schoenhut, that I carry with me," she explained. "It's meant for little kids to learn their scales, and has two octaves. I got it at a garage sale in Encinitas, for $16. I took it on the tour, and it was a hit. People just gravitated toward it." People also gravitated toward Berryhill for two related reasons -- fellow Singer-songwriter Jewel and the Internet. "There's a group of people who are fans of Jewel's and call themselves the EDAs (Everyday Angels), and they have an Internet chat group on which they turn each other on to other artists," Berryhill said. "And some of them started turning up at my shows on this tour. "They would relay messages to other EDAs to see me and Elizabeth (Hummel, the San Diego singer-songwriter who accompanied, and sometimes performed with, Berryhill). By the time we got to Boston, we had a day off, and about 20 EDAs had a party for us where we played at someone's house and they taped it. I've done a few similar things before, but I'm not used to this sense of community the EDAs have. I haven't seen Jewel since I got back, but I'll have to thank her. 'Thanks for your fans!'" --end-- Wasn't that neat? BTW, CLB is appearing again on June 25 at Java Joe's; she'll be doing "every damn Wednesday" at Joe's during the entire month of July!! She's also in L.A. (well, Santa Monica) next Sunday, on the promenade, at 3 p.m., and at Largo's in L.A.(on Fairfax, across from Canter's), on June 26. Elizabeth Hummel will be at Java Joe's on June 21 -- next Saturday night! Also, try to catch Joy Eden Harrison in San Diego as early and often as you can; she's the artist and sultry crooner who created "Where have You Gone, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean," which many know from "Innerchange Days." Another wonderful performer from the wellspring down there in the lower left-hand corner of the U.S.A. Finally, do not miss the July, 1997 "Interview" magazine article (interview) with Jewel and 'Nedra. Java Joe gets mentioned, too! ;-) -=-Larry-=- From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Jun 16 17:47:30 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id RAA01496; Mon, 16 Jun 1997 17:47:30 -0400 Date: Mon, 16 Jun 1997 17:47:30 -0400 Message-Id: <199706162147.RAA01496@jane.smoe.org> Received: from nohar.rcinet.com (nohar.rcinet.com [157.134.207.6]) by dmapub.dma.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id RAA32098; Mon, 16 Jun 1997 17:37:03 -0400 Received: (from smap@localhost) by nohar.rcinet.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) id RAA14880; Mon, 16 Jun 1997 17:37:02 -0400 (EDT) Received: from shore.shore.net(192.233.85.136) by nohar.rcinet.com via smap (V2.0beta) id xma014872; Mon, 16 Jun 97 17:36:35 -0400 Received: from jane.smoe.org (root@smoe.org [204.167.97.154]) by shore.shore.net (8.8.3/8.8.2) with SMTP id RAA04070; Mon, 16 Jun 1997 17:35:39 -0400 (EDT) Received: from localhost by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id PAA00246; Mon, 16 Jun 1997 15:46:36 -0400 Received: by jane.smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.5); Mon, 16 Jun 1997 15:46:35 -0400 Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id PAA00227; Mon, 16 Jun 1997 15:46:22 -0400 Received: from easynet.co.uk by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id PAA00220; Mon, 16 Jun 1997 15:46:08 -0400 Received: (qmail 28496 invoked from network); 16 Jun 1997 19:46:21 -0000 Received: from cmgroves.easynet.co.uk (193.131.249.192) by kiwi.easynet.co.uk with SMTP; 16 Jun 1997 19:46:21 -0000 From: Chris Groves Subject: Jewel News: Jewel in MOJO To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 2405 The following appeared in the July 97 issue of MOJO in the UK. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The stars divulge what's guaranteed to get them going as they invite MOJO... ALL BACK TO MY PLACE Jewel Multi-platinum yodellist What music are you currently grooving to? ----------------------------------------- The new Pavement. I have Let It Be by The Replacements with me, and I'm really into Yma Sumac right now. What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favourite album? --------------------------------------------------------------- The first Rickie Lee Jones album. It really has a great groove that so few albums catch with studio musicians. I love that sound; it just feels so right. What was the first record you bought, and where did you buy it? --------------------------------------------------------------- Pink Floyd, thinking it was The Pink Panther - I didn't read well when I was about four or five. I listened to every single song on The Wall thinking it was The Pink Panther singing it, which is very sick, haha, strutting around...I bought it in a supermarket in Anchorage in Alaska where I grew up. Which musician (other than yourself) have you ever wanted to be? ---------------------------------------------------------------- Boy, a million of them. Didn't work, though. I really loved Nina Simone but over everybody, Ella Fitzgerald - not so much her life, but definitely her voice. What do you sing in the shower? ------------------------------- Opera music. I love Puccini. And a lot of baroque stuff - I love Monteverdi. And Aaron Copland lullabies, like All The Blue Horses, are very pretty. What is your favourite Saturday night record? --------------------------------------------- Something very quiet. Last Saturday at the Blue Shamrock in Ireland I heard some beautiful traditional guitar and penny flute. And your favourite Sunday morning record? ----------------------------------------- Cello concertos - Elgar's played by Jacqueline Du Pre is beautiful. And Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. And Pleased To Meet Me by The Replacements is great on both Saturday nights and Sunday mornings. Leo Kottke I like too. I love his voice; it's very comical. Do anything but buy it and you'll miss the liner notes' extra poems, and album credits proclaiming industry heavyweight Danny Goldberg "the most soulful daddy-o in the business". "I approach the business by always trying to call out of someone the highest in themselves. It's just a matter of engaging people in a good way instead of a bad way", opines Jewel, sunnily. (June 27/ July 4 issue). There is also a picture of her in the index. On page 63 it says: Age:23 Why her: Despite all that critical gas about female-rage rock, it is the Alaska-born Jewel's have-you-ever-been-mellow hooks and come-hither looks that have music fans proclaiming there's no place like Homer. How she does it: Draws on inspiration from whomever she's reading--currently it's Nabokov. (Yep, Vladimir.) "I love writing," she adds. "Ultimately, I'm in love with my pen. I don't understand things until I process thme through the pen. It's like a therapist." Creative Crutch: "I like having a picture of home, but I don't think I'm totally dependant on it." What's Next: A Lilith Fair tour stint and a single, "Foolish Games," which appears on the Batman and Robin soundtrack. Says Jewel: "It sure beats waitressing." Why is this significant you ask? Well, it's because 70% of that $1430.00 equals exactly $1001.00 toward the JPK Trust. The check has also officially been sent. :-) Theres still approx 40 not spoken for. Email if you need ordering info. Finally, the earliest Jewel fans may remember this: Way back when, during the late Innerchange/early residency tours days, Jewel supplimented her income by selling her "Shiva Diva Doo Wop" demo tape & some very special posters that were designed by her mom Lenedra. These posters are quite unique & a highly collectible Jewel item. The poster featured a purple angel on a blue background framed in gold & the ANGEL GLOWS IN THE DARK. :-) At the bottom it says "Participate In Miracles". There was a principle behind the posters, too. They were sold in pairs only. You were to keep one & give one away or post it somewhere appropriate. Anyway, Lenedra uncovered some of these posters recently & we're going to try & make them available to EDAs with some kind of EDAFoundation support involved. I'll update you when I know more. The Alaskan folkster will debut four new songs when she kicks off a new batch of "Unplugged" episodes with an hour-long performance next week. Of course, Jewel performed many of the songs as a solo artist, but brought a full band on stage to give her a beefed-up sound for the show, which premieres Tuesday at 10 p.m. For now, the new tracks are titled "A Boy Needs A Bike," "Fragile Flame," "Passing Time," and "Last Dance Rodeo," the last of which she performed live for the first time for the MTV special. Some of these tracks may turn up on Jewel's next album, but she's got so much touring lined up that she says she won't be hitting the studio until next April. "I look forward to time off, and I look forward to doing the album," Jewel told MTV News about her future plans. "I mean, I've been touring straight for three years, you know how it goes." While she is certainly looking forward to a well-earned rest after playing the Blockbuster Rockfest this weekend as well as this summer's Lilith Fair tour, she is also eager to get back to work in the studio. "My album... yeah, I look forward to doing it," Jewel told MTV News. "I've never been inhibited by it. I've always been able to do brand new songs and shows, and I always played solo, so it's not like I have a band to tell, 'Now we're doing something new.' So, I'm not that anxious. It's OK." [900k QuickTime] MTV News will catch up with Jewel once again at this weekend's Blockbuster Rockfest at the Texas Motorspeedway near Dallas. Bush, No Doubt, the Wallflowers, Paula Cole, and many others will also be on hand, and you can catch all the action when "The Week In Rock" broadcasts from the show Saturday and Sunday at 6:30 p.m. MTV will also carry an hour of concert highlights on Sunday at 5 p.m. Eastern time. Jewel will then head off to Seattle to launch Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair tour with Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman, Joan Osborne, the Cardigans, and many others. I will make it brief. The largest EDA gathering since JewelStock will take place July 10-13. It has been timed to coincide with the West Coast Lilith Fair dates. A large number of EDAs will be inthe area. This event will take place at Point Sal just outside of Santa Maria, CA. This is about the half way point between San Francisco and San Diego. It was important that I had a chance to visit the site before agressively posting. I spent this weekend camping on the beach. DO NOT MISS THIS EVENT! Most people will be camping on this prestine hidden secret beach. If camping isn't for you, many local motels are available. As soon as the pictures are developed, they will be posted on a web site. You will think I made this place up. A international traveler friend that I took to Point Sal two years ago described it as the most beautiful place he has ever seen. Camping is free. There is no where in CA that you can get a camping spot on the ocean without getting reservations many months in advance. This weekend we were only one of two couples camping on this piece of paradise. If you are interested in attending, send me email with STARRY NIGHT INFO in he subject line. It will also be available at the headlining shows Jewel will be doing in late August and September :) I've been told this is really slick :) In addition to all the lyrics to the songs from the "Pieces Of You", it will have the lyrics to Flower, Race Car Driver and one more song. (She told me one of the extra songs was Angel Standing By, but that is on POY, so my guess is it will be another song from either the "Save The Linoleum" or the "Phyliss Barnaby Finally Gets A Bra" promo CDs, like maybe Cold Song, Rocker Girl, Emily or God's Gift To Women (as Flower and Racer Car Driver are on "Save The Linoleum") Also, once they get the smail newsletter set up, it will be available through mail order. In other words, a bunch of EDAs want to hang out in Woodstock, NY on July 19th and 20th, (next month!)! =) Although there was behind the scenes talk about having a few non-Jewel artists play for us, those plans have not worked out. However, that's never stopped us before, has it? This is to be a true EDA gathering for the sake of EDAs. And a fallback for those northeasterners unable to make it to Starry Night in SanDiego the week before. =) There is no real plan at this point except for a definite goal for a bunch of EDAs to meet and hangout in the little love community of Woodstock. We'll probably swing over to Bears- ville at some point to check out the Bearsville theatre and trade stories of Jewelstock. Aside from that, it'll just be pure EDA Lovin' !! =) What I need right now is RSVP from everyone interested in joining other EDAs in Bearsville on July 19th/20th! Please RSVP to : BRSVL97@aol.com This is an address set up to coordinate this event. Next week, after I get responses, I will post info about lodging and camping! Who wants to go !!!??? =) Crunch! The media constantly focuses on "poor Jewel, who was homeless & living in her van". After reading this, you'll discover what her friends & older fans already knew: That was a wonderful carefree time in her life. Exactly the opposite of how the media usually portrays this time period. Not only is it one of the most intelligent published Jewel interviews, it's very insightful if you are curious about Lenedra & her influence on Jewel's perceptions of the world. The brief side interview with Lenedra speaks volumes on how Jewel became so focused. This interview should be mandatory reading for all EDAs (& parents). Oh & a few people have written me privately asking why I always refer to her as Lenedra as opposed to her more common nickname "Nedra". I simply have a thing for 3 syllable names & I like hers in particular. :-) MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Jun 26 21:08:26 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id VAA26650; Thu, 26 Jun 1997 21:03:45 -0400 Message-Id: <199706270103.VAA26650@jane.smoe.org> Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 19:19:11 -0400 (EDT) From: ABershaw@aol.com To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: MrBB-New Tour Book, t-shirts & webcast Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1278 Hi all, As Mike earlier mentioned, there will be a brand new tour book available at the Lilith Fair gigs & the following headline tour. Once again, the books are designed by BiBi Bielat but are more elaborate than the previous ones. These booklets are 8" x 8" & a full 36 pages in length. They are in full color & include 17 pages of lyrics & poetry. They also contain many brand new photographs by Jewel's friend West Kennerly & our very own Ted Berberian. (Congratulations Ted!) A few EDA websites are also mentioned including the very deserving "Pieces Of Jewel" site by Adam Longfellow. (Congratulations Adam!) I know all involved are very pleased with it & it should be a welcome addition to all EDAs collections. Also two brand new t-shirts will also be available, but I haven't any info on artwork or designs just yet. This merchandise will only be available at the shows. Finally, I've recieved many inquiries about the webcast tommorrow on Atlantic's Digital Arena. This is the same as the Mediadome webcast from the final night of the last tour. Lenedra just sent me a message to forward to you all. Read on & enjoy. Best wishes, Alan(MrBB) Hello all, Yesterday we shot the new video for 'Foolish Games' and I thought you would enjoy a note about that. It was with director Matthew Rolston who shot her photos for Rolling Stone. He was very excited to do this because it would be a departure from his previous videos, a change he was looking forward to making. It was shot on an outdoor location in the hilltops in Browns Canyon about an hour and a half from LA, on Boyle Ranch. The shoot began early with hair and makeup on site at 7am. Fog engulfed the mountain top and shooting didnt begin until about 10am. It was a hot high grassland sort of terrain. Trailers for wardrobe, production, makeup, etc. were brought in and a Winnebago for Jewel. Several semi trucks were there with equipment, full crew and catering making a rather large group on the hilltop. A knoll was prepared as the set: tons of black sand was brought in, and combined with charred trees and some cactus created a miminal terrain with a sort of Hawiaan volcano feel. Jewel had many scenes singing in front of a scrim--a sort of hanging net. She was wearing a black net dress with a cream colored under dress. This was all under a large three sided tent that opened to the net and landscape, but kept Jewel and crew and equipment in the shade. There was also shots of a very beautiful black horse, some with Jewel riding it. In addition she worked in some scenes with a body double whose name was Amy. In these scenes they alternated between the black net dress and a similar one in white sheer with non sheer under dress. Sometimes Amy was in the white one and sometimes Jewel was. Amy will write a paragraph about her experience and send it to me so that I can send it on to you. Jewel wanted some figures in kimonos as well, so there are three women in black robes who add an unusual Oriental touch. I wont spoil the fun by being more descriptive. It will be on TV by July 15 I think. By the way, though it will say Batman video in the credits, no Batman footage was used.
