To the dismay of more than a few, the special download cards have been missing in the CD package. I brought this to the attention of MrBB (aka Alan) and he sent me this message to pass on to the EDAs (and I am sure other Jewel related forums that I know of). The message from him is below. Mike ___________________________________ Hi Mike, Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I appreciate it. And feel free to repost this message to the EDA list. Everyone who ordered from Jewel's store most certainly should have gotten the download card and you can relay that if they didn't, we are upset about it. We know we made a promise and we take that seriously. I'm doing my best to check into it, but as it's late, we can't reach the particular packaging & distribution folks at Atlantic that we need to reach until tomorrow morning. We are totally aware of the one-week bonus track downloads (which don't go live until tomorrow), and if those who ordered from Jewel's store will give us a chance, we'll do what we can to make it right for you. There's an awful lot going on at the moment (as you no doubt know) but I'll make the missing download card issue one of our top priorities for tomorrow. Mike ________________________________________ Many-faceted Jewel even more polished in '0304' By Elysa Gardner, USA TODAY Has any popular artist shown more growth over the past five years than Jewel? Her last album, 2001's This Way, established the blond minstrel, one of several sensitive young women who became poster girls during the Lilith Fair era, as a more mature singer/songwriter and a performer of considerable force and grace With her new outing, 0304, Jewel raises the bar again, exploring more adventurous rhythms and textures while sustaining and nurturing her folk-pop sensibility. The delightful R&B and dance-music flourishes on Stand, Run 2 U and the single Intuition -- all co-composed by Cuban-American tunesmith Lester A. Mendez, who also co-produced the album with Jewel -- dispel any doubts that this neo-hippie can get her groove on. Other tracks incorporate jazz, rock and even new-wave nuances with an easy, playful elegance that never feels forced. Jewel's lyrics, too, seem wittier and wiser, less starry-eyed, though her fundamental social and romantic idealism remain resolute. "I am tired of waiting/So this time I'm leaping," she sings on the gently sinuous Becoming. "I reach -- beyond myself." If more mainstream artists were encouraged to take that approach, the music industry might not be in such dire straits. This review seems to comply with the NY Times's recent tradition of not actually saying if the CD is good or bad, but just kinda ... talking about it. So some of it seems positive and some of it seems negative, but there's no real conclusion. Here it is: Seriously, It's Time to Lighten Up *By KELEFA SANNEH* ! *0304* /Jewel/ Jewel has a problem that everyone from Linkin Park to Kelly Clarkson probably envies: she's afraid that people take her too seriously. It's her own fault, of course. After all, no one forced her to augment her recorded output with a volume of poetry and a loosely organized memoir in fact, it seems likely that a number of sensible friends and associates tried to dissuade her. And in any case, Jewel's reputation for sincerity has served her well in the eight years since she made her debut. She has invented her own kind of pop solemnity, leavened with just enough whimsy to make it bearable. Even when she murmured, "Who will save your soul?," she sounded as if she were merely curious. Still, Jewel seems to have decided that her old reputation has become a liability: it's time she lightened up. So she has begun a full-scale rebranding effort centered on her new album, "0304" (Atlantic). On the cover, the singer models carefully torn clothes the color of highlighter markers, and inside, there's an extraordinary "Note to fans" explaining the change. "This record may seem different to you," Jewel writes, adding that she aimed to bring together "dance, urban and folk music." What sticks in the mind, though, is her two-word description of the new album, a description that suggests desperate enthusiasm: "It's fun!" She's right, although her description requires all the usual qualifications: more or less, much of the time, in a way. One of the album's first songs is "Run 2 U," in which Jewel sounds exactly as lighthearted as she means to. The usual acoustic guitar is joined by a bubbling synthesizer and a buoyant beat; she sings the lyrics in a high, sighing voice that makes a passionate affair sound as casual as one-night stand. A number of other songs hew closely to this formula: electro-acoustic beats, lovey-dovey lyrics, alphanumeric spelling. In pursuit of nonseriousness, perhaps, she's not afraid to repeat herself. In "Run 2 U," she sings, "Let me crash into u"; in "2 Become 1," she sings, "Melt into me now"; in "Sweet Temptation," she sings about what happens "When u fall into me"; and in "U & Me = Love," she sings, "Won't u crash into me?" These are lyrics that are begging to be ignored. Maybe this is Jewel's way of doing something that's both enormously difficult and slightly paradoxical: she's saying that people needn't listen to what she's saying. The album's lead single is "Intuition," for which Jewel has made a sharp music video with the director Marc Klasfeld. The video is a series of vignettes, with grainy images of the singer walking down the street that metamorphose into glossy advertisements for Jewel jeans, Jewel soda, even Jewelle, the magazine. Near the end, Mr. Klasfeld uses an MTV-style graphic to scroll a message from an imaginary fan: "Jewel's music sounds much better now that she's dancing!" It's a great video, but the song isn't quite sophisticated enough to match it. Jewel has never been subtle, but she has often been less heavy-handed. Her best songs don't grapple with big ideas, they flirt with big ideas; on her hit "Hands" from 1998, she seemed to be batting her eyelashes as she sang, "In the end, only kindness matters." "Intuition" isn't nearly so charming: the lyrics are full of hollow complaints about the "world of postmodern fad," whatever that means. The verses offer a nice surprise: a bit of accordion, wedded to a heavy backbeat. (In the liner notes, Jewel thanks her new producer, Lester A. Menendez, for dreaming up the combination.) But then comes the chorus, where every line bends upward in both pitch and volume. She's laying it on a bit thick, at the very moment when she should be backing off. This is good because this review will be published on a lot of different sites selling this album - I found it at barnes and noble.com, but I think it'll show up all over the place the way their review of This Way did! This guy hits the nail on the head, in my opinion. I couldn't agree more. Here it is: "Within the liner notes to her fourth album /0304/, Jewel includes a note to her fans, explaining that "This album may seem different to you," which is putting it mildly. For a singer that has been make low-key singer-songwriter albums so unassuming that on her debut the two singles had to be re-recorded for mass consumption, it is a big shock to put on /0304/ and hear that she has abandonded folkiness and adult-pop to make her dance-pop album, of all things. A move that's even more shocking when you consider that when this was released in June of 2003 the teen-driven dance-pop boom of the late '90s/early '00s was over, so it doesn't necessarily even sound like /part/ of the mainstream of the time, suggesting that this isn't a calculated effort to ride the latest hip trends. No, the music on /0304/ is the wild, weird result of Jewel's desire to create a "modern interpretation of big band music. A record that (is) lyric-driven, like Cole Porter stuff, that also has a lot of swing...that combined dance, urban and folk music." While the big band and Cole Porter allusions are a stretch -- although it is true that this is as lyric-driven as her previous three records -- with the assistence of producer Lester A. Mendez, she has managed to blend dance, urban and folk, complete with pop overtones, of course, in previously unimaginable ways. Like Sheryl Crow's eponymous second album, this picks up familiar strands of contemporary pop music and familiar themes in Jewel's own work, but the way they're assembled is disarmingly idiosyncratic -- it has a polished, commercial sheen, but the songs take weird twists and turns in their arrangements, structure and lyrics (another thing this shares with /Sheryl Crow/ is a prediliction for odd pop-culture references and name-dropping). More than anything, it's the weird juxtapositions in the production -- the accordions and dance beats on "Intuition," the way her protest tune "America" ends in an electro-crash, the muted jazz trumpets on her Nelly Furtado-styled "Leave the Lights On," to name just a few -- that make this an original-sounding album, something with more imagination than the average dance-pop record. Better still, it sounds more authentic (and boasts a better set of songs) than her previous records, which were either too ramshackle or too self-serious and doggedly somber to really reveal much character. Here, even if its under the veneer of commercial pop, she puts herself out on the line more than she ever has, and she's come up with her best record, with her best set of songs and best music yet. As she notes in her message to fans, "it's the first record I enjoy listening to. It's fun!" She's completely right on that note -- against all, it's the first album of hers that's a sheer pleasure to hear. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine"/ From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Tue Jun 3 20:37:54 2003 Received: from smoe.org (ident-user@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smoe.org (8.12.8/8.12.8) with ESMTP id h540bs75027341 for ; Tue, 3 Jun 2003 20:37:54 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.12.8/8.12.8/Submit) id h540brQQ027339 for jewel-news-outgoing; Tue, 3 Jun 2003 20:37:53 -0400 (EDT) Received: from pop.pronetisp.net (pop.e-zonline.net [12.23.44.24]) by smoe.org (8.12.8/8.12.8) with SMTP id h540bo75027309 for ; Tue, 3 Jun 2003 20:37:50 -0400 (EDT) Received: (qmail 28015 invoked from network); 4 Jun 2003 00:42:38 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO oemcomputer.smoe.org) (64.179.70.90) by 0 with SMTP; 4 Jun 2003 00:42:38 -0000 Message-Id: <5.1.0.14.2.20030603203549.028eea58@pop.pronetisp.net> X-Sender: mikec@mail.smoe.org X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.1 Date: Tue, 03 Jun 2003 20:36:19 -0400 To: jewel@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel-News: FWD: JeweLink: Messages from Lenedra and MrBB Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed X-Spam-Status: No, hits=0.0 required=5.0 tests=none version=2.53 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.53 (1.174.2.15-2003-03-30-exp) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Here is the latest issue of JeweLink, directly from Jewel's "people", if you want to get a copy of this directly as each issue comes out, you can sub- scribe to it by sending a blank email to join-jewelink@list.jeweljk.com ******************************************** JeweLink - The Official Jewel Communications List ******************************************** Hi All, We're here today to invite you to the brand new www.jeweljk.com web site! We've been diligently working away behind the scenes to bring you an all new look and friendlier navigation to coincide with the release of Jewel's new album. In addition to the "facelift," you'll also find quite a few updated listings on the calendar and many of the recent setlists have also been added. Have a look and become familiar with the improved navigation, which is a little different from before. Also, please be patient and keep trying if your ISP is still loading the old Jewel site. This is to be expected with some service providers, as it will take some longer than others to auto-update their DNS listings - some as long as 24 hours. However, most of you should be able to enjoy the new Jewel site by the time you read this. Before we leave you to go explore Jewel's new site, Lenedra is here and she'd like to personally tell you about one of the most exciting plans we have up our sleeve. So without further ado, I turn you over to Jewel's mom and manager, Lenedra. MrBB Hi everybody, Last time I emailed you it was to thank you for your ideas about what you wanted on the Jewel website. You will find that several of your excellent ideas were indeed implemented on the enhanced content of Jewel's new CD. You also helped focus the direction of her new web site. You'll find more of your requests showing up there and that will continue. In addition, I mentioned that we were trying to think of a way to accommodate some of your more costly ideas by starting a pay area where you can get a lot more content and we can cover the extra costs. Well, we've been hard at it here and we are launching the new area on June 11th. It's called Jewel: Unedited. It's a members only-area where subscribers get access to exclusive audio and video. You'll also get messages directly from Jewel, pre-sale ticket opportunities, chances to be at sound checks and even to meet Jewel! New photos will show up first here too, and you'll have access to an archive of previously posted photos. In addition, you'll have the opportunity to win cool stuff that Jewel has signed, and we're working on other great ideas to include over time. We're pretty excited about it and think you'll agree. You can get a free one-month subscription to Unedited if you get one of the special limited editions of 0304 when it streets today. It includes a collectible download card that offers Unedited free for a month. The month will start with the Unedited launch on June 11th! If you pre-ordered an "0304" CD from The Jewel Emporium and did not recieve a download card, not to worry! You'll be contacted via email with a special access code to recieve your thirty day trial membership when Jewel: Unedited officially launches. Can't wait to hear about your favorite songs on the album!!! As always, thanks to you all. Lenedra ********************************** Hi, me again. As with any new technology, like the download card site, some users are bound to have some difficulty here and there. If you experience technical problems, please help the designers of this area help you by contacting the tech-support address on the back of the download card itself, which is techsupport@downloadcard.com. They are best able to solve problems when you include your operating system info, browser type and version, as well as the difficulty you may be experiencing. Also, the link to find out more about "Jewel: Unedited" on the download card site has not yet been added, which is why some of you cannot find it there. The link will be there soon, but in the meantime you can learn a bit more about it on your travels through the all new www.jeweljk.com. Plenty to enjoy today, MrBB PS. I'm presently having a lot of fun digging through the vault getting future "Jewel: Unedited" audio clips together for you, so... But - through much consideration I decided that Jewel was playing 40 minutes from my house - I'm kind of contractually obligated to go. Besides I know a weak ticket when I see it - and HOT 99.5 obviously didn't succeed in making this a desirable event to attend - it wasn't exactly sold out, in fact they didn't even sell the lawn - making sure that everyone that did attend would have a pavilion ticket so that the artists wouldn't have to look at a bunch of empty seats and a smattering of people on the lawn. They were plugging a 2 for 1 ticket promotion for almost a month and all day today they tried to sell them at $10 each. But - I still wasn't that inspired to get down there to see Jewel do a 4 or 5 song set with a bunch of pop acts drawing a very "non-jewel" crowd. But, through various phone calls some of us managed to confirm that she would be getting the longest set of the night at about 45 minutes - however she wasn't closing the show. Well - we can get 8 - 10 songs into 45 minutes and 45 minutes of Jewel was better than any other entertainment option that I had open to me - so at the last minute we decided to get up there and check it out. We got third row tickets (see - scalpers aren't always a bad thing) on the way in - so hey Jewel's going to be very near me - pretty good Saturday night - but could somebody please explain to me why she is going on before Wayne Wonder and Blu Cantrell?? Doesn't she deserve the headlining spot? I gotta say - I suspect that this was a calculated move on her (or J-team's) part. I think that she didn't want to see people leave and have only her crowd stay to see her play (it was barely over a half sold house to start with). I think that she wanted to see if she was up to the challenge of winning over a house full of people that weren't all there for her, all the while winning over some new fans and selling some more records. She was up to it in a big way!!!! After stumbling a bit and coughing and stammering her way through a couple of lines (alright a verse) of Standing Still - she rolled with it and adapted to the lyrics to fit her troubles and proceeded to have an outstanding set!! After getting a throat lozenge to aid her through her troubles with having had too much pre-show popcorn (Bad Diva!!) she proceeded to bring everyone back to their seats and get the entire crowd into her set. There was hardly a soul there that would have cared if Wayne Wonder or Blu Cantrell got to sing a note - but, many of those people would have left before Jewel ever came out had she headlined. She had them in the palm of her hand by the time Stuart played the intro to Love Me Just Leave Me Alone you knew that she could have kept on going and the crowd would have lapped it all up. It was a very nice 50 minute set - for what it's worth I was several Jewel shows removed from getting goosebumps during a performance - but not after tonight. You go Jewel - great job!!! (anyone in management who decided that she should have an earlier spot - very nice decision) Anyone who doesn't know how the tour is going to be with the new material needn't worry. Jewel live will always equal an 11 on a 10 scale. The band is even tighter with the This Way tour under their belts. This was very nice - getting to see her turn some of the people who couldn't care less and get that non-packed house sounding like a packed house - people were even cheering for an encore and many were bummed when it didn't happen. Like always - I can't wait to see what comes next!! Here's hoping that the summer can pass quicker and usual because I can't wait for the fall tour!!! It's a complicated issue and we have contacted Atlantic Records to find out what happened and why those of you who pre-ordered or purchased it during the first week did not get the limited edition with the download card, including those who pre-ordered from us. First, here's what happened: The first run of "0304" was supposed to be a total of 500,000 copies, all of which were to be limited edition versions with the download card. This is why we were able to promise that those who pre-ordered from us would get them. Unfortunately, Atlantic had an additional 70,000 copies pressed without the download card, and these were distributed simultaneously with the limited editions. We were not informed of this until after the Jewel Emporium pre-orders had already been sent to you, and we have spent all week working on a solution. Here's what we're capable of doing about it: If you pre-ordered the album from the Jewel Emporium, not to worry. Thanks to the fact that we actually know who you are, you will be helped without anything required on your part. You will be receiving an email during this week with a unique PIN code to access the download card content. We are also working on granting you access to the two downloadable bonus tracks. If you purchased it from anywhere else, and have questions or complaints regarding the download card, please send an email to dlcard@jeweljk.com. This email account will be operational through this Tuesday, 6/10, and we will try to help you by forwarding your messages directly to Atlantic Records for resolution. If you have not yet purchased the album, be sure to look for the stickered version that says it's a limited edition right on the front. ******************************************** ***REMINDER: JEWEL AT THE NBA FINALS TONIGHT! It's been real busy around here the past few weeks, preparing for the launch of Jewel's brand new subscription site. We'd like to clarify a few things about the new "Jewel: Unedited" site, which we're real excited about and hope many of you will greatly enjoy. First, Jewel's regular website, which has always been cost-free, will continue to be provided to everyone and that won't be changing. Everyone will still have access to the calendar, weekly photos and the various content we've always provided you. The new "Jewel: Unedited" subscription site, which can be accessed through jeweljk.com contains all kinds of extra content for those of you who still crave more. We want everyone to make an educated decision before joining, and most of you can do that by either signing up for a free month trial as a download card benefit or simply trying it for a month, as it will be available as a monthly or yearly subscription. Much of the "Jewel: Unedited" content, as well as the idea itself, was in direct response to many of your wishes and suggestions over the past few years, as well as JeweLink subscriber suggestions earlier this year. We've taken many of your requests to heart and have created something that will provide you with more direct access to the content you've asked us for. However, as with any North American-based musicians, there are some areas that will benefit North American subscribers more than others, like meet & greet opportunities (for obvious reasons) and pre-sale tickets. We realize this is disappointing to our international friends, but we believe making as many people happy as we can is the right thing to do, even if it means some benefit more than others. It might be helpful to explain some of the realities of touring, so that everyone understands what we are capable of doing and why. Internationally, for instance, each country and each venue has totally different regulations and requirements in regard to touring and ticket sales. Its one of the things that makes international touring so complicated. As much as we'd love to offer all benefits to everyone everywhere, pre-sale ticketing with international venues on an individual basis is an administrative impossibility. North America has central ticket agencies that offer pre-sale ticket services, making that possible for many (but not all) venues here. Also, there are some legal restrictions that we are required to follow, one being that you must be 18 years of age to legally subscribe. Those between the ages of 13 and 17 can still enjoy the free introductory month, but must have a parent or legal guardian subscribe for them after that. Everyone should also take the time to read and understand the site use agreement posted on the site. We're trying to be as clear and upfront about these things as possible, so that each of you can make an educated decision on the merits of "Jewel: Unedited." It might not be for everyone, but we encourage you to check it out for yourself. Those who wish to see and listen to rare archival clips, read messages and unpublished writings from Jewel, have first access to pre-sale tickets, meet and greet opportunities, as well as a lot of other cool content, will certainly find plenty to enjoy. Have a look for yourself. We hope you enjoy it! Jewel: Unedited is now officially launched! ******************************************** ***JEWEL: NYC IN-STORE CD SIGNING ON 6/16 Next Monday, June 16th, Jewel will be signing copies of her new CD at the FYE store on 51st Street in New York City. She will be there from noon to 1:30. ******************************************** ***BROADWAY UNDER THE STARS EVENT ON 6/16 Later that same evening (6/16), Jewel will be one of the vocalists participating in "Broadway Under The Stars." This free event, which is co-produced by NYC & Company and The League of American Theaters & Producers, offers a 90-minute musical "valentine" to New York City residents and visitors. Accompanied by a 35 piece orchestra, a stellar cast, including Jewel, will perform popular Broadway songs. This event is held in Bryant Park, which will open at 5:30 for picnicking, with the show to begin at 8:00 PM. Get there early to secure a spot on the grass. ******************************************** ***REMINDER: JEWEL ON "THE VIEW" TOMORROW Jewel will be appearing on "The View" tomorrow morning. This program broadcasts on ABC. In many areas, this airs at 11:00 AM but check your local ABC morning listings for availability and accurate time in your area. ******************************************** Jewel performance information, release dates and media broadcast updates available 24 hours a day at: http://www.jeweljk.com/?QS=calendar.asp ******************************************** --- You can help a friend subscribe by having them send a blank email to join-jewelink@list.jeweljk.com To view selected back issues of JeweLink, please visit the JeweLink Archive at the www.jeweljk.com calendar page. We're getting some really great feedback on "Jewel Unedited" and we hope everyone will eventually get the time to take a look and listen. Of course, some of you are finding it difficult to register, which we anticipated, but there is an answer! If you have ANY tech-help type issue with Unedited or jeweljk.com in general, you can ask for assistance, but not from me, because as many of you know, I'm a blundering fool when it comes to website tech issues. Writing Jewel at the website email form is also not the most efficient way to go, as she's keeping herself quite busy these days. However, a new help line at customerservice@jeweljk.com is now set up to help those of you who may be having difficulty. This address is now specifically for tech-help issues and not to be confused with the Jewel Emporium store customer service. Also, you will see three little Unedited-related boxes on Jewel's home page, the third being a little question mark. Clicking that will get you all the various help addresses, as well as some helpful hints, one might need. As always, if you require some help, our customerservice@jeweljk.com people can best assist you if you include your operating system, browser type and version, along with any difficulty you may be experiencing. They are ready and willing to help you. We look forward to hearing about your experiences at Jewel Unedited. Enjoy! It appears on page 27 of the Arts and Leisure section in a column called "Playlist." Jewel: Jewel can do anything pretty well: folk, country, poetry, acting, and, with her new album "0304", dance-pop. There's nothing ever drastically wrong with her work-in fact, the dynamic range of the song "Haunted" is rather impressive. But there is a ceiling (positioned somewhere above average and below great) that she hits every time. It's accompanied by a photo of her touching hands of audience members at what looks to be the Z100 show at Giant Stadium. When Jewel asked me to be involved at the start of her career, I told her I'd manage for five years, and it's been ten now. They have been ten really amazing years, and you know a lot of the stories of our development of her career together. As other business opportunities have developed, as well as our work with Higher Ground for Humanity and the ClearWater Project, I have watched my energy and interest move more in that direction and away from management, and I feel it's time to make that move complete. As Jewel and I have discussed this, we've felt that the timing is perfect in terms of what is happening in the music industry. With the crisis the industry is in, things have become much more difficult for artists. Downloading and other factors have greatly impacted artists' revenues, and a high level of business expertise is needed now. Harder times have drastically changed the relationship of artists with all areas of the industry, making the management role as guard dog more important than ever. To fill this role, Jewel has chosen the team of Irving Azoff and his staff at Azoff Music Management. She chose Irving for a number of reasons. A high level of management connectivity in the industry is really needed for her right now, and Irving certainly brings that to the table, along with a wealth of industry experience. Important to her is his development of long-term career artists such as the Eagles and Steely Dan. Irving has a reputation for being very tough and I know he will protect her at all costs, which is crucial right now. I am also impressed with the fact that so many of his artists and employees have been with him for nearly thirty years; the focus on loyalty and taking care of each other is great. I'm also satisfied that the understanding and enthusiasm for Jewel's talent as a singer-songwriter and performer are primary in his interest in her. Also important to me is the range of services and expertise that a larger company provides. So I support her choice of new management and also assure you that I will be around to consult and be involved as well--I'm certainly not walking away entirely! I think the thing Jewel and I most look forward to is having more time for our personal relationship. It seems in the past year and a half, with the crisis the music industry is in, we never even have time to go to a movie together. So we can't wait to have more time to enjoy each other without the continual demands of her career always coming first. I have to say that my contact with all of you has always been a highpoint for me and I would miss that going away, so we'll find ways for me to still be in touch. You know I think you are the greatest fans on earth! First off, Jewel will be included in tonight's E! News Live report from last night's "Broadway Under The Stars" concert from Bryant Park in New York City. This broadcasts on the E! channel at 7:00 pm EDT with a rebroadcast tomorrow at noon. VH1 is rebroadcasting their "50 Greatest Women of the Video Era" again tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 pm EDT. Jewel is featured at #32. Late tomorrow night, you can catch Jewel again as she'll be Craig Kilborn's guest on The Late Late Show. In most areas, this program follows David Letterman on CBS at 12:35 am (technically 6/19). Some CBS affiliates have slightly different late night scheduling so check your local listings to be sure of accurate time in your area. This Friday (6/20), VH1 will be rebroadcasting "Being: Jewel." This 2002 episode was shot in a-day-in-the-life format, with Jewel wearing a camera at eye level. You can experience a day in her life, primarily from Jewel's perspective, during a promotional visit to Madrid early last year. This broadcasts at 11:00 am EDT on VH1. Late Friday night, tune in to "Last Call with Carson Daly" where Jewel will be Carson's musical guest. This broadcasts on NBC at 1:35 am (technically early Saturday). This is a new appearance that was taped on June 9th before an invited audience featuring many of you. To finish up today's TV updates, I also have a few more details on two upcoming programs featuring Jewel: Next Monday, June 23, VH1's All Access show will premiere the 2nd installment of "Celebrity Pets Unleashed." This new episode includes Jewel and her dog George and broadcasts at 11:00 am EDT, with a repeat at 9:00 pm EDT that evening. Also the new half hour still-to-be-titled MTV Jewel special, which we've been mentioning the past few weeks, now has an official premiere airing scheduled. This will broadcast for the first time next Thursday evening, June 26, at 7:00 pm EDT. I think that covers things for this week. With many of us involved in the Soul City Cafe Music Quest finals concert coming up this Thursday night, we'll probably get back to you next week sometime, so check Jewel's calendar for any scheduling information you may need. I hope to meet more of you in San Juan Capistrano, as well as seeing a lot of familiar smiling faces. We're all looking forward to a very memorable night of good friends and wonderful music! And that's what life is all about, isn't it? And what a night it was! Besides excellent performances from all the SCC finalists, a hilarious set from Jewel (she managed to squeeze a few songs amidst her comedy, too!) and a very funny surprise "stage contribution" from Jewel's dog George during our SCC Insiders Meet & Greet/Soundcheck, there were plenty of new friendships made that will certainly last into the foreseeable future. Although I unfortunately couldn't get to the hotel afterwards, I'm told there were also many incredible jams, with many of the SCC musicians playing together, into the wee hours of the night. Although Jewel took the stage first to kick off the night, she and Lenedra stayed until the very end and were very enamored with all the artists as well as the special feeling that seemed to permeate the room. I haven't seen Jewel in such a glowing good mood in quite some time. It's a testament to the passionate music as well as the integrity of the capacity audience that almost everyone was still there by the time Abby Dobson and her band closed things down with one kick-ass set of funky grooves at the end of the night. I'm sure many of you, as well as the artists, will be posting about their personal experiences at the SoulCityCafe Insiders message boards and I encourage anyone who would enjoy reading more to join us there. Something very special occurred and I know I'll never forget it. So now we're in production getting some of the highlights ready so all of you can enjoy watching and listening to these extremely enjoyable performances. There's also a Comcast Cable special now being planned for later this year, that will feature performances and footage from this very memorable event. As far as I'm concerned, it's impossible to pick favorites, so we'll be leaving that difficult job up to you. The plan is to have performances up on the Soul City Cafe site this Wednesday and then the final online voting will begin to decide who will hit the road with Jewel later this year! Stay tuned! The whole article can be read here: http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2003-06-22-jinx_x.htm The Jewel excerpt is below... Mike _________________ Jewel, a former upstart who is now considered a pop veteran at 29, took a risk in defying critical and corporate expectations. Her current album, 0304, adds electronic dance music and R&B textures to her folk-pop foundation. "People ask me if I ever feel misunderstood, but I feel like until you have 25 records under your belt, you're going to be misunderstood," Jewel says. "How can people know what you're capable of as an artist if you aren't given the chance to show them?" In her liner notes for her fourth album, 0304, which entered the charts at No. 2 on Saturday, Jewel thanks Atlantic's Shapiro "for encouraging me to make the music I want to, regardless of label concerns." Shapiro concedes "there were some naysayers. But when Jewel started out, people told me I couldn't get her on alternative radio because they were playing all grunge. I knew that her doing something different was a risk, but it's my job to support that." We will be up on Wednesday once again ourselves and a few others plan to show up on Thursday :-) We'll see the rest of you on Friday :-) I haven't heard back from the campgrounds yet since leaving a message to double check our per person cost, but I'm assuming it will still be the $9 per night per person like last year.... June 24 Olivia Newton-John might have been magically transformed from dowdy prude to lascivious vixen at the conclusion of "Grease" except that when she tried to stretch that skintight black leather into her own career, few were tricked into thinking she rocked any harder. Twenty-five years later, both Jewel and Liz Phair are attempting to extend their careers into a second decade with unabashed makeovers playing to the broadest common denominator. IT'S A HIGH STAKES game among Liz Phair and Jewel, and (what remains of) the record buying public. So then, which one will prevail in faking out the other? In early 1995, Jewel Kilcher shuttled between Chicago, Detroit and Toronto, playing weekly coffeehouse residencies on a given day of the week for a month. This was a calculated effort by Atlantic Records to help assert their latest signing's authenticity. Movers and shakers gently prodded to "discover" her assets were accordingly impressed. She was dressed down, wrote her own somewhat rambling and preachy songs yet was presumably authentic. But none of those trend spotters rooting for Jewel could have imagined a day when Miss Kilcher, now 29, would release a single that cooed playful insults at moving limelight targets like Kate Moss, J. Lo and Charlie Sheen, even as she primps and preens for those very same paparazzi. It's accompanied by a video that lampoons shameless product placements, while concurrently serving up her song as a jingle for a Schick razor that shares the song's name, "Intuition." Does she, or doesn't she know what's happening? Whose side is Jewel on? These contradictions are a payoff for emerging in the mid-'90s, when the idealistic singer-songwriter mythologies of previous two decades still lingered. Back then, Jewel might fall somewhere between the raging independent streak of industry-defiant Ani DiFranco, and the intemperate misfit character cultivated by Courtney Love. But the dominant females who were groomed for rock stardom in the wake of grunge conveyed a new kind of cuddliness that was standoffishly chaste, from Juliana Hatfield and Lisa Loeb, to Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries and the girls fronting Veruca Salt. For their male admirers to cop out loud to any sort of attraction seemed to transgress an unspoken code. MASS-APPEAL AGENDA Then came Alanis Morrissette, with her XXL T-shirts, mangy hairstyles and man-eating confessionals. Then the Lilith Fair, Spice Girls, Britney Spears, and Jewel, who'd graduated from the coffee houses to enormous radio hits more than 11 million sales for her debut LP, "Pieces of You," thanks to slick re-recordings of "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "You Were Meant For Me." She was all but a pop culture afterthought by her mid-20s, having become a kind of dusky, yodeling maiden of the rodeo, or something. Lukewarm reviews of her discs never failed to mention her poetry book, a first (and last) acting role in "Ride With the Devil," and getting too rich to keep spinning her yarn about living in a van by the river. And that's why, after a surreptitious market test last year with a dance club re-mix of her previous album's Indian-inflected track, "Serve the Ego," Jewel's new "0304" was unleashed with a mass-appeal agenda. As a whole, it plays directly off Madonna's unconvincing display of repentance, "American Life," while the accordion threading through "Intuition" rings familiar from collaborator Lester Mendez's previous client, Shakira. The same raven-haired Shakira who shed all the allegedly intellectual pretenses of music she made for the Latin market in favor of shaking her rump to barely intelligible lyrics. And just being a blonde. NUDITY AND PROVOCATION Forget then about trying to decode Jewel's revealing outfits or the mixed messages of any forthcoming endorsement deals. You'll know that she is desperate to be taken sentimentally again when she changes her hair color. Back in April, unthinkable as such a thing might once have been been, Playboy's Web site ran a poll to determine "The Sexiest Babe in Indie Rock." Deserving winner was Neko Case of the New Pornographers, although it's a woman whose music Playboy's readership would never tolerate, Carnie Wilson, who actually gets the pictorial treatment in their August issue. Liz Phair, however not included in the survey, because her "indie" days ended by 1994 will gladly get nude for you. The front of Phair's self-titled fourth album features her torso framed by a guitar that's seemingly intercepting her attempt at a newfangled yoga pose. It's a throwback to 1993's "Exile on Guyville," the rough-hewn debut album whose jacket photo featured a blurry shot that revealed about one-sixteenth of Phair's bare left nipple. Swaddling herself in explicit lyrics and, even more provocatively, explicit ideas about post-feminism endeared Phair to the most snobbish of listeners. (Her salacious thoughts were coherently rendered in a sparse rock 'n' roll context that accentuated her wafer-thin singing voice.) Subsequent big-deal efforts, in 1994 and 1998, were met with a collective shrug. While it was the sort of tenuously alternative music that a teen queen like Debbie Gibson should have graduated into, for a one-time critical darling like Phair, it was assumed her renegade streak got lost in a pile of contracts. SYMPATHY FOR BEING TRASHED? Yet, after going through the marriage and divorce cycle, then contributing backup vocals to Sheryl Crow's insta-jingle "Soak up the Sun," Phair or at least those calling the shots at her record company were bitten by the bug to actually pursue popularity. The tier of mediocre-selling-but-critically-acclaimed major label "prestige" acts hardly exists any longer, anyhow. Recruited for the task were The Matrix, the songwriting and production trio that shaped Avril Lavigne's signature ditties. Liz Phair's first single, "Why Can't I?" packs a now-familiar, self-deprecating coquetishness and, for old time's sake, the "F"-word. The difference is, she's twice Avril's age; although the outrage leveled at 36-year-old Phair's re-think by die-hards who "remember her when" is tantamount to feeling betrayed by Gloria Steinem getting hitched for the first time at age 66. It's difficult to imagine Liz Phair getting any buyers simply out of sympathy for her being trashed (coming across a disenchanted review of her mainstream gambit). Consider how the Go-Go's and the Bangles female groups whose breakthroughs were just as genuinely fortuitous slammed into the nostalgia wall by their mid-30s, despite any and all efforts to impress with new material. In selling Phair as a brand new artist to those SUV drivers whose waning devotion to the lacquered likes of Celine, Shania and Mariah has left them hankering for something more "real," perhaps Capitol Records is just trying too hard to tap into the unspoken neuroses of soccer moms across America. Norah Jones, by comparison, seems to be having way more fun wringing her melancholia. But for Phair, as with Jewel, it becomes a cat-and-mouse game with the media and with audiences who imagine themselves on the smarter side of the fence (thanks in part to the sage teachings of Simon Cowell). This extreme makeover does she really mean it? Yes, but does she really mean that she really means it? Is she truly sincere about being so insincere? You sure? And so on and so forth. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc Weisblott, a blogger and reluctant rock critic living in Toronto, has written for the Village Voice and Blender.
