Dutch anarcho-punks The Ex have been playing a lot with jazz musicians like Han Bennink and (the late) Tom Cora. Their Bimhuis concerts (legendary "underground" jazzclub) have been quite notorious. http://www.theex.nl/history.htm Bart ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 May 2005 06:11:28 -0400 From: "Eric Klaver" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] Re: JAZZ! and not jazz Bart: > Do you say JAZZ or do you say no. I also have a recording of his (ECW as well IIRC) from La Scala. I never get the sense that he is improvising though, all the notes seem to sit perfectly and precisely, never seeming misplaced. This is not to say that the recording isn't challenging though. It just unlike some improve Jazz where some players play notes that seem to say to the listener "F*ck You". Hmmm...maybe Jazz IS like punk...<< That's an interesting observation Eric, some years back when I was involved with local T.V (produceer/Interviewer/cameraman/scrubber) I interviewed the manager of the then new to the area WNCU npr jazz station and we bacame friends. some time down the road whilste he was a visitor in my humble trailer the discussion invariabley turned to music and I asked him why he didn't play punk on his station,he played Reggae,Blues,Soul,Jazz,Jazz-rock,so why not? (actually it was an attempt to get work for a couple punk d.j friends of mine who loved jazz as well) he pooh poohed the idea, saying punk had no place on his station,I asked him why not and he responded that punk was too far removed from where jazz was comimg from: I disagreed and put 'The Ideal Copy' (amongst others)on the c.d player and asked him to listen to the spaces and the discord. He did so and was amazed at the similarities, he asked me if I'd be interested in hosting a program and I declined, saying I was busy enough with my own business and the volunteer work I already did for the local public-access t.v station (The People's Channel) shame really, but yes, there ARE similarities everywhere if you look for them. Also, for the Keith A's on the list, there are so MANY different styles of jazz that, with a little perceiverance, you're eventually going to find a style that fits you.Rock on Tommy. There's even a type of Jazz called "Jazz Punk," of which Simon Fell is a big contributor. One album that combines both in my head is the first half of Ornette's In All Languages. There are these short, intense acoustic trio tunes that just sear the ears....... - ----- Original Message ----- From: Ari Date: Friday, May 6, 2005 6:46 am Subject: [idealcopy] Jazz not jazz...... pt. 4.8 > >>It just unlike some improve Jazz where some players > play notes that seem to say to the listener "F*ck > You". > Hmmm...maybe Jazz IS like punk...<< > That's an interesting observation Eric, some years > back when I was involved with local T.V > (produceer/Interviewer/cameraman/scrubber) I > interviewed the manager of the then new to the area > WNCU npr jazz station and we bacame friends. > some time down the road whilste he was a visitor in my > humble trailer the discussion invariabley turned to > music and I asked him why he didn't play punk on his > station,he played Reggae,Blues,Soul,Jazz,Jazz-rock,so > why not? I am sure this happens to everyone... a friend of mine asked me about my icon on my msn messenger whick is of Colin and Robert from one of the Send gigs and asked who it was. He had never heard of Wire before and requested that I burn him a cd to give it a try. He likes most 80's music so I have an idea what to put on there. Of course I can't forget about the earlier gems and the newer goods either. I hope you all will send me a few suggestions on what I should put on this compilation. Thanks all. I didn't entirely dislike The Fragile, but I felt it suffered from classic 'double-album' syndrome...take out the uninspired moments and filler and you'd have a fantastic single disc. When I first heard "The Day the World Went Away" I was very excited--here was this monolithic slab, the first single I'd heard in a long time with NO drums whatsoever--but the album as a whole didn't maintain for me that sense of adventure. Good little record. Its much lighter than I excpected and not exactly ground-breaking stuff. Very much a guitar-orientated record, with Robin Rimbaud sticking to guitar rather than adding any electronica edge to proceedings. But its up there with the best of Colin & Malkas other solo stuff, and at times touches on 80s Wire (wonder if any of this was written for R&B3?). I think you'll all enjoy it. Highlights for me are Antiphon, Wallpaper and Pylons, and Malka's basslines. I like the live EP, and if Githead is ongoing I'd like to see them maybe exploit the dirtier, heavier sound they get when playing live. Or I'd like them to go to the other extreme and add a lot more layers to the rather stripped down sound on here. Good start though, and I think it might be a grower.... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 May 2005 02:29:20 +0100 From: Tim Subject: [idealcopy] OT: Arcade Fire Can highly recommend these if they come to your town! Thought their LP was a bit hit & miss but live they are magic...and they sold copies of their early mini-lp which is really good. Think Talking Heads, meets Dexys, meets early Mercury Rev, meets Godspeed You Black Emporer with a sense of humour. Add a bit of Kate Bush, a dash of Bjork....and a bloke in a crash helmet hitting things. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 May 2005 10:22:08 +0200 From: Bart van Damme Subject: Re: [idealcopy] OT: Arcade Fire > Can highly recommend these if they come to your town! > Thought their LP was a bit hit & miss but live they are magic...and they > sold copies of their early mini-lp which is really good. For me "Funeral" is the debut of the millenium and "Laika" one of the best singles ever! The EP indeed has some great tunes as well. I'm sad as hell I can't make it to their Dutch gigs. > Think Talking Heads, meets Dexys, meets early Mercury Rev, meets > Godspeed You Black Emporer with a sense of humour.
