Pretty steep. Matter of fact, damn steep. Still I finished ordering and got the CD a couple of days ago. For the most part, I like it. Then, the list comes in the mail, and I find that it's much cheaper at borders, with more tracks. Don't get me wrong, I love Jonatha and her stuff, (I spent the $20 against better my judgement remember), but I too feel ripped off. I can't imagine why they felt this was the way to go. I'll be writing to them directly. What a stupid way to do business. Unbelievable. john in sumner wa ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! I'm very interested in the three-track-debacle, cause I'm a record store buyer, and we aren't selling three extra tracks. So I'm also going to Borders to check that out. Anyone else going? Nevertheless, this prickly situation with Jonatha has sparked an idea which makes me think twice. Given: 1. Artists should be paid for their work. 2. Napster is the definition of stealing. Those things out of the way, I can't possibly justify downloading all of Steady Pull (ie. not buying the album). BUT at the same time, I don't live in America, which means I can't rightly walk into a Border's and buy the CD very easily. Purchasing online is the best option, second only to picking it up on a trip overseas (an expensive cab ride to the record store, to be sure). That said, those three tracks not included with the album (the one sold online) now becomes extremely difficult for me to get and -- more importantly -- not a part of the commercial album available to me. Do I now have legitimate ethical grounds to search Napster for these songs, songs which are otherwise unavailable to me? What about songs no longer in print by artists aside from Jonatha? ps. Whoever goes to the next show, please tell the list if she addresses the whole 3 songs deal ... oh Jo, how could you? dkb **************************************************************************** This email and any files or other attachments transmitted with it are confidential and may be legally privileged and are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. What about songs > no longer in print by artists aside from Jonatha? Music is art. An art lover should be able to experience and enjoy art freely, without obligation to the artist. If, however, you want to purchase something that can be sold, you might want to help the artist by purchasing a print of a painting, a repro of a sculpture, or a CD of music. When you purchase a CD, you do not own the music therein -- you are licensed to hold, but do not own, the music. Playing your CD for a non-paying friend is completely legal, so how is playing it through your computer to a distant friend any different? The friend does not get to enjoy the product you purchased, only the music -- which is art anyway. Jonatha was apparently indifferent to Napster and the taping of shows before she met Bob Clearmountain, who is adamantly opposed to Napster. Bob is a very talented guy, but I think he helped set Jonatha's mind against Napster. rm - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roderick Montgomery rod@dinkdonk.com the fool stands only to fall, but the wise trip on grace... And also glad that I haven't been reading everyone's posted opinions. Prefer my own. I am off to find a Border's. Yea sounds like pretty lame business to me. Come on Jo. And frankly about Napster, being the deadhead that I am now totally enthralled with a band called String Cheese Incident, I know the power in marketing that bootlegs have. SCI continuing in the tradition of the Dead, allowing tapers to thrive, and is now one of the most successful bands in the country. And you probably haven't even heard of them, and outside of this mention maybe never will. And meanwhile as much as I love Jonatha and her music, she still is struggling to get acceptance in the diseased world of pop music. Too bad. She is better than that as we all know. Well I do look forward to hearing the cd soon, especially her collaboration with Neil Finn. What a dream. Maybe he will take her under his wing and she will get the recongnition she deserves, at least with Crowded House fans. I do hope she is not trying to court Christine Aguelera's minions. If so I am out of here. - --- diamondmask@juno.com wrote: > As I ordered the CD from the web site, I > found my hand hovering over the keyboard > thinking.....$20?!!? Pretty steep. Mr. Rains replied and stated that this was a deal made with the Borders chain only. In exchange for the extra tracks, to be distributed ONLY through Borders, "Steady Pull" was given some guaranteed exposure and other perqs. I then asked Mr. Rains if I could share his e-mail with the "Full Fledged Strangers" list and his response was he wished I wouldn't, however, he did say Jonatha was writing a response to all those who have questioned this practice and it will be posted on her website in a day or two. I also get the impression that he thought I was talking about posting his response to me on the public boards at the Jonatha site, even though I specifically said "Full Fledged Strangers."
