The group's final album, "Half Smiles of the Decomposed," will be released Aug. 24 via Matador. A full announcement is expected from the label on Monday. "That's it," Pollard said about an hour through the three-hour set, which featured a guest appearance by Chavez/Zwan member Matt Sweeney on "Quicksilver" and a cover of AC/DC's "Whole Lotta Rosie." "You can't be the Rolling Stones. You've gotta quit while you're relatively handsome." GBV's 21-year career will "go out in a blaze of fire," Pollard insisted, adding that the group's final show will be held on New Year's Eve in New York. "We are the kings of indie rock. When we quit, indie rock will die." Pollard did not give a specific reason for last night's announcement. In recent years, he has spent as much time recording with GBV as he has immersed in solo projects with current and former GBV members, including guitarist Doug Gillard (Lifeguards), bassist Tim Tobias (Circus Devils) and guitarist Tobin Sprout (Airport 5). GBV's touring plans for the rest of the year have yet to be announced beyond three U.S. shows in June, beginning June 17 in Champaign, Ill. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 2004 14:09:14 -0400 (EDT) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: REAP! :( On Sun, 25 Apr 2004, Eb wrote: > Beloved indie rock act Guided By Voices will split at the end of the > year, frontman Robert Pollard announced on stage last night (April 24) > at New York's Bowery Ballroom. Boy, there'd better not be any good songs on the new album or they'll have to put out another best-of later. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I happened to be listening to Hardcore UFO's just now and remembering how good Guided By Voices once were, as well as how they'd at least occasionally started to hit those heights again on the last two albums. But at some point all the songs sound the same. Maybe Pollard's reached the end and is looking for something else. Now, if he's breaking up GBV just to spend more time on solo projects I'll be bummed. Waved Out is one of my favorite Pollard-related records, and in the "entertainingly unlistenable crap" department I would give Nightwalker the edge over many of the New Zealand noisemasters he was imitating, but those solo records have gotten (and stayed) disposable even faster than the GBV records. a ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 2004 12:47:46 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: reap Estee Lauder The woman, not the company ===== "Life is just a series of dogs." -- George Carlin "I'm going to keep playing music until somebody shoots me." -- Scott McCaughey __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? While moving house, I stumbled across the old Positive Vibrations archive. This consists of a huge pile of hundreds of press cuttings (going back to the 1970s), photos, tapes, assorted correspondence, artwork of Robyn's, plus a large pile of unpublished articles earmarked for forthcoming issues of PV. It's (more or less) completely unsorted. I'm never going to have a need for any of this (whatever the quality of the music, my opinion of Robyn and his cronies has spent the last three years in a steady nosedive), but it seems a shame to break up the collection - there are a lot of things that aren't easily available elsewhere and may be the only copies in existence (clippings from local Cambridge papers, demo tapes etc). Plus, it took a lot of effort to put together! If anyone would like it (or knows of anyone who would), I'm perfectly willing to give it to anyone willing either to collect it (north London) or pay the shipping cost. If anyone's interested, let me know... Aidan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2004 05:46:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Re: Did anyone happen to catch... Hmm, you might be thinking about the legendary Homer3 sequence from the 1995 Halloween special. http://www.mathsci.appstate.edu/~sjg/math/pacifichomer3d1.html http://www.mathsci.appstate.edu/~sjg/math/pacificdatahomer3d.html Though these days, the extent of computer involvement with 2d hand drawn or "cel" animation (with the exception of South Park which, originally, was created in a 3d program and rendered to look like 2d paper cutouts) is typically color automation with digital ink & paint, and the final composite, where the digital "cels" can then be layered and animated independently. - -Steve - -- Steve Talkowski Animation Director / Hornet Inc. 213 West 35th St. Suite 605 New York, NY 10001 917.351.0520 x20 www.hornetinc.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2004 07:29:17 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: reaps Wu-Tang Clan Orbital ===== "Life is just a series of dogs." -- George Carlin "I'm going to keep playing music until somebody shoots me." -- Scott McCaughey __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The recent convention... and yeah, I see too many cartoons these days... is that there usually will be a "bass" and a "guitar", the bass being indicated by (A) fewer, but still a basically nonsensical number of, tuning pegs, and (B) being played by the "less senior" character.
