The good news is that the Green Note in Camden, where I was headed, really is one of the most delightful venues I've ever been in, with a great atmosphere, lovely staff and fantastic veggie food.B A totally civillised experience which made waiting for two hours for the music to start quite, quite painless (as did the two glasses of wine I downed in the meantime). The not-so good news is that Juliet Turner was only so-so, even in such an intimate venue.B Nothing particularly wrong -- her voice is still great, she still exudes that charming awkwardness that makes her seem so real, but she was performing with two other musicians, and rather than the three-guitar combo and vocal harmonising I expected, they took turns performing their own songs, with one of them occasionally supplying a bit of extra guitar or a tambourine or a bit of harmony.B So you had the sight of three people sitting on a small stage, one singing, another helping out a bit, and the third sitting and staring at the floor while they waited their turn.B The other two -- a Gentry Morris and Yvonne ....um, sorry, I forget her last name -- were fine, but not that special, and in the end Juliet Turner did only five of her own songs.B The evening just never really cohered or caught fire for me. Still, great venue.B What a pity I wasn't aware of it when I lived up that way.B Adam K ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Jul 2009 13:17:21 +0000 (GMT) From: gordodo@optonline.net Subject: Re: Juliet Turner live, etc. I'm going to miss cheapo cheapo - but my allergies wont - talk about a moldy store...but they did have their share of obscure gems buried in there... I just got Juliet's new album last week - only listened to it once so far but wasnt blown away like I hoped to be - nothing unpleasant, but nothing that made me say wow. - -j - ----- Original Message ----- From: Adam Kimmel Date: Friday, July 31, 2009 6:01 am Subject: Juliet Turner live, etc. To: ecto@smoe.org > First, the bad news: Cheapo Cheapo Records is closed.B Gone.B > I know there are a couple of ectos out there (well, jason!) who > know what I mean -- that funky, cluttered little dive on Rupert > Street on the outskirts of Soho, brimming over with obscure CDs, > vinyl and -- latterly -- DVDs, run by an utterly charmless > beardy.B When I worked in that area I used to go in there all > the time, squeezing through the narrow aisles, flicking through > the heavy racks, and I discovered some great music in there, > including Pinback and Melissa Ferrick.B I haven't been by there > for a while and now mostly get my CDs off the net, so I guess I > have to share the responsibility for its closing.B Mr CDs, > another haunt, is also so completely gone I couldn't even > remember where it used to be, and Sister Ray has taken over > Selectadisc further up Berwick Street. > > The good news is that the Green Note in Camden, where I was > headed, really is one of the most delightful venues I've ever > been in, with a great atmosphere, lovely staff and fantastic > veggie food.B A totally civillised experience which made > waiting for two hours for the music to start quite, quite > painless (as did the two glasses of wine I downed in the > meantime). > > The not-so good news is that Juliet Turner was only so-so, even > in such an intimate venue.B Nothing particularly wrong -- her > voice is still great, she still exudes that charming awkwardness > that makes her seem so real, but she was performing with two > other musicians, and rather than the three-guitar combo and > vocal harmonising I expected, they took turns performing their > own songs, with one of them occasionally supplying a bit of > extra guitar or a tambourine or a bit of harmony.B So you had > the sight of three people sitting on a small stage, one singing, > another helping out a bit, and the third sitting and staring at > the floor while they waited their turn.B The other two -- a > Gentry Morris and Yvonne ....um, sorry, I forget her last name -- > were fine, but not that special, and in the end Juliet Turner > did only five of her own songs.B The evening just never really > cohered or caught fire for me. > > Still, great venue.B What a pity I wasn't aware of it when I > lived up that way.B > > Adam K ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Jul 2009 05:34:12 -0800 From: Adam Kimmel Subject: Re: Juliet Turner live, etc. "I just got Juliet's new album last week - only listened to it once so far but wasnt blown away like I hoped to be - nothing unpleasant, but nothing that made me say wow" - jason Yes, and of the five songs she played last night, three came from there and they weren't even my faves. I'm happy to more than give her the benefit of the doubt, as she's been studying Speech Therapy full-time as well, and I really admire that. Mind you, the cover art was pretty bad... Am I nuts? give it a try... - -jason np Tori Amos - AAtS ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Jul 2009 10:56:22 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Juliet Turner live, etc. Hi, Adam Kimmel wrote: > The good news is that the Green Note in Camden, where I was headed, really is one of the most delightful venues I've ever been in, with a great atmosphere, lovely staff and fantastic veggie food. The Green Note is one of my favorite venues on either side of the pond. Risa, the owner is so sweet (in temperament as well as appearance, she is Noe Venable's British twin :), and everyone there treats the performers amazingly well. Plus the food is incredible. :) I'm sure the next time Rachael Sage plays England we'll try to get back there. We've been there twice already and loved it each time. Meredith :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Jul 2009 22:55:57 -0500 From: Doug Subject: Marissa Nadler Marissa is such a mixed bag, I'm having trouble fathoming her. On the one hand, she has a score of songs that I just can't stop playing. Her songs can be so earthy, haunting, mood-inspiring, ghostly. And yet many of her other songs are just, well, songs I can barely get through, and loathe the idea of listening to again. I keep asking myself, some of these songs are *so* good, why doesn't she make them all like these? I know I'm being silly, my tastes are not universal, I know. But man, it's startling how good she can be while also being just totally unappealing. If I could make a greatest hits CD for her, this would be the track list: Fifty Five Falls Daisy and Violet Diamond Heart Dying Breed Mexican Summer Air Inside My Lungs Expecting to Fly Hyacinth Your Heart is a Twisted Vine I might be missing a few, since I haven't heard all of her stuff. At least, I hope I'm missing a whole bunch. ;-) - --Doug ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V14 #211 ***************************
