Today's Subjects: ----------------- gigs and film (Florence/Once/Laughing Lenny) [Adam Kimmel Subject: gigs and film (Florence/Once/Laughing Lenny) It's been a while, and I'm afraid I'm conflating three ecto experiences into one rather untidy e-mail, but here goes: The first gig in a while that I've enjoyed and, at least, not walked out on! Florence and the Machine, really just one singer. I'd been given her first single by someone who is managing her, quite liked it, and decided to take a punt when tickets went on sale at the Bush Hall, near me. Next thing I know, it's sold out, but my recent track record (walking out of both Yeasayer AND Shearwater) didn't fill me with hope. Maybe it was just me, maybe I'm getting too old for this sort of thing. Still: enjoyed it thoroughly . The audience was a mix of trendy kids, the kind who'd normally haunt a Kate Nash or Laura Marling gig, as well as a sizeable representation from the over-40s crowd (yeah, me among them). Florence was dolled up with glitter make up and a smart gown, and revealed herself to be fun, to be having fun, and to have a great, bluesy voice that took me by surprise. As far as I can tell, there's still no album, only MySpace tracks, but everyone seemed to know every word of every song, including three fans who took to the stage dressed as clowns. As clowns actually creep me out, this may not have had the desired effect on me. The next week I saw the film, "Once". It may have been mentioned here before, but I thought I'd recommend it highly to the ecto crowd. It's an ecto film, for sure. I think a lot of its appeal, apart from its gentle humour and good acting, depends on whether or not you like the music, which is a cross between Damien Rice and David Ford. Because there is quite a lot of it. And, last week, my partner and I trailed out to the O2 stadium to see Leonard Cohen. I was never a fan, but my partner was up for it, so I'd booked (rather expensive) tickets a few months ago. the O2 is a great complex, with decent restaurants inside, and the stadium is one of the biggest I've been to since I left my stadium-going days behind back in the States. Still, the sound was excellent, the two giant screens were dazzlingly sharp and mesmerising. And the show....crikey. More of an experience than a gig. I know I'm stating the obvious, but the man is 75 years old and yet he played for nearly three hours, skipping on and off stage with an energy that I can only dream of. Now, I knew exactly three songs in the whole set, but there ws something quite mesmerising, quite uplifting about the whole thing. He had an excellent and diverse band, with a particularly praiseworthy Spanish guitarist playing mandolin, twelve-string and a variety of other stringed instruments, as well as someone on sax, clarinet and some bizarre electronic wind instrument I've never seen before. Not to mention an excellent trio of backing singers, but everyone is due praise. Cohen was, as expected, downbeat, but with a wonderful grace and twinkle that made every song, through the power of his words and the beauty of the arrangments, just shine with beauty and passion. Each song was like a last dance, and the whole gig, lit in hues of blue and purple, seem like one long, bittersweet goodbye. I came home and immediately ordered a two-disc anthology, which could be a mistake. All the songs may be there, but they'll never duplicate the power of that night. I felt as if I'd witnessed a real event. Adam K. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Nov 2008 14:03:51 -0800 From: jessica spurling Subject: San francisco area reminder, this saturday! Re: My Brightest Diamond news [Tour (FREE TICKETS) | Remix EP | New Video] They'll be sharing a string trio with opener Clare & The Reasons, which should be a pretty cool thing. I like Clare's music too. I've only listened to a few songs on MySpace, but they sounded pretty fun. neal np: Live from Malawi - Body, Mind & Soul On Nov 17, 2008, at 3:03 PM, jessica spurling wrote: > My Brightest Diamond plays at the Swedish American Hall this > Saturday.
