I don't visit MySpace, but I did check out a couple of leads Vickie posted earlier (thanks!), and promptly ordered Jenny Owen Youngs' CD and her EP of demos. it's been spinning in my Discman since, and I can't get her songs out of my head. I even wear her cute little button on my jacket. so, for that reason alone, I think MySpace has made the world a tiny bit better place to live. Spread the J.O.Y. :-) - -- Kjetil T. np. Keller" Subject: d(v)d This is a notice, not a review: I picked up the Dresden Dolls' new DVD, =Paradise=, the day it came out last Tuesday; it's commercially available (I bought it at the Virgin Megastore) and cheap ($9.99). The burning question from those who are already Dresden Dolls fans will be: is it worth picking up? In a word, yes. =Paradise= preserves for posterity a top-notch live performance at Paradise Rock Club in the Boston area this past June 5th. It's a thoroughly professional production (directed by Michael Pope, who also directed their two videos), with multiple cameras and angles (and not =too= frenetic cutting), even occasional superimpositions so you can see pianist Amanda Palmer and drummer Brian Viglione perform simultaneously. As someone who has attended [mumble- mumble] Dresden Dolls shows, I can say it manages to capture, as well as a video can, the experience of attending a Dresden Dolls show. The disc includes the hour-long performance, an hour-long documentary "A Life in the Day of the Dresden Dolls" (chronicling the entire day leading up to the show), about 20 minutes of pre-show events (a short interview by none other than Christopher Lydon(!), performance pieces to Dresden Dolls songs), two extra live performances from a Danish festival, and the band's two music videos, "Girl Anachronism" and "Coin-Operated Boy." My opinion of the latter is that it's one of the best music videos I've ever seen. In short, it's excellent value for the money. For those of you who are not (yet) Dresden Dolls fans, it's not a bad introduction: it costs less than their one commercial studio album (or a concert ticket, now that they've gotten so big), they're one of the best live bands now in action, and they play an edgy "punk cabaret" that can compass punk, rock, singer/songwriter ballad, and a wide range of covers. I mean, how can you resist a pianist and her heavy-metal drummer doing a bang-up cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs"? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Nov 2005 13:33:38 -0800 From: Steve VanDevender Subject: More Charlotte Martin dates! This kind of makes up for finding out that Rasputina is playing in Eugene . . . the evening after I leave for a week-long trip. This Charlotte Martin show happens the evening after I get back so I may actually be able to make it. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Nov 2005 14:22:25 -0800 From: Scott Andrew LePera Subject: Re: Interesting MySpace numbers. Maybe they're crap, and that's why they > haven't sold any CDs. Yeah, I intentionally left out the band itself because in the end I was more interested in the numbers than genre. They're certainly not crap; they play good alt-country pop, like the Gin Blossoms in the 90s. But really, I don't think it matters either way; I've seen crappy bands sell tons of albums and great bands sell very little. I've been thinking about this for a few days, and I think at the end of the day, adding/being added as a MySpace friend is really not much of a commitment to anything. Most people there collect friends like marbles. There's little real passion, so there's little conversion to action, i.e. buying a CD.
