Saw Thea Gilmore, yet again, in the Half Moon in Putney. This is a lovely, intimate venue, with only one drawback: it's in Putney. Nothing wrong with Putney in itself, but...well, it's hardly London. It took me an hour and a half to get there by tube from the city itself. Anyway, this was a low-key, acoustic gig with only her, Nigel Stonier and...um, the other guitarist, whose name Ive unforgiveably forgotten. Robbie something. Thea forsook her recent rock-chick look, coming on with a jacket, tie and bowler hat. After the rather perfunctory and anonymous set at the Islington Academy, this one was loaded with a bit more charm and quirkiness, and there were a couple of nice surprises: a verse of Rachel Steven's "LAX" slipped in at one point, a cover version of "The Lady is a Tramp" which accentuated the bluesier side of her voice, and all three of them climbing down into the audience, instruments in hand, to lead a singalong version of "Mud on My Shoes". Also previews of the upcoming album, which sounds promising. Mary Lee Cortes, of Mary Lee's Corvette, opened, and commanded everyone's attention admirably, with grace and humour. It was an ecto night, by the way: the same night, Feist was playing somewhere else in London. And the progrock bit: Well, I got an email yesterday morning informing me that Van der Graaf Generator are putting on a reunion concert at the Royal Festival Hall, and that tickets had been on sale for two days, and that it was already 76 per cent sold out. The gig isn't until May 2005. I managed to nab a ticket, somewhere at the back of the stalls, and was on a high all day. Since breaking up almost 30 years ago, they've had the odd, one -off reunion, usually cropping up for a song at a Hammill gig (I've been fortunate enough to see them both) but this is the first full fledged reunion gig, so it should be interesting, particularly given Hammill's recent brush with mortality. Meanwhile, on more ecto ground, KT Tunstall is all over the press, right now, garnering good review, interviews, and insisting on her integrity. Is she the real thing? Another Thea/Carina? Or another Melua? I'm willing to find out. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 Dec 2004 16:31:45 -0500 From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: Ed Gerhard - House of Guitars Neile sent me this disc a long time ago, and here is my overdue review. House of Guitars is a pleasant album, and I mean that in the best sense of the word. Ed Gerhard's new age folk (with occasional forays into blues) mixes originals, traditionals, and covers. All but one of the songs are solo, and Ed plays several kinds of guitars (acoustic, Hawaiian, slide, lap steel) as well as bass and a few other instruments. It's the kind of music you want to listen to on a rainy Saturday afternoon or while curled up in front of the fireplace. That is to say it's both comfortable and comforting. It's laidback, tender, and pretty. There's nothing bad on it or about it, but I don't find anything particularly compelling either. If you're a fan of instrumental guitar music, you might like it very much. If you're not (and I admit I'm not) then you might find it makes nice background music but not much more. I see on Amazon that he does have 2 Christmas albums which I'm actually interested in checking out. I think his style might work very nicely with holiday music. http://www.edgerhard.com/ If someone thinks they'd appreciate this disc more than I do, let me know; I'd be happy to send it on.Neile, if you need anything else, let me know.
