Subject: indigo girls Well, that was relatively painless, actually. I wasn't expecting that, I have to admit. As I said, though, I think my disappointment may have led to me being a bit harsh -- as JoAnn said, there are some good songs here, all down to Amy, and it's certainly better than Become You which, as for Lauren, leaves absolutely no mark on me. I also began to fall out of step on Come On Now Social, but probably for completely different reasons. I actually liked the experiments, the Husker Du moments, the rocking political rant of Go and the wondrous fusion of styles and sounds that made "Faye Tucker", but I get the feeling a lot of fans wanted the simpler, harmony-led songs of the old Indigo Girls, which they duly provided with the rest of the album, with trite lyrics and singalong tunes. As I think I've mentioned before, I had serious problems with the IG list regarding this album for daring to suggest it wasn't the best thing they'd ever done. I admit a real fondness for Shaming of the Sun, I have to say -- I think it has some of Emily's best songs (Everything In Its Own Time, for me, is just heartbreakingly beautiful and evocative) and I've always thought Shed Your Skin is one of the fiercest, most erotically charged songs the girls have ever done. I always think of this album as a pair with Swamp Ophelia, although Swamp Ophelia is the one that, the moment I heard it, I knew it was great. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Mar 2004 15:42:02 -0500 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: Anne Heaton House Concert April 4, 2004 Hello! I'm pleased to announce the 3rd year of house concerts at Yale Avenue Houseconcerts! I'm so happy to be starting out 2004 with Anne Heaton and I'm honored she's coming since I've been a huge fan for many years. I have the start of a full season of shows booked. Some upcoming concerts: May 2: Rachael Sage and Jenny Bruce http://rachaelsage.com/ http://www.goodgirl.com June 27: Trina Hamlin and Amy Speace http://trinahamlin.com/ http://amyspeace.com/ If you've heard Anne Heaton before, you know she's a great songwriter and that she and her guitarist (Frank Marotta, Jr.) are superb musicians. If you've not heard her before, here's a bit of her bio: Anne Heaton is all about layers. Her first full studio album, "Black Notebook," shimmers and shines with them: layers of simple intricacies, and of complex spareness. "I have always been a huge Peter Gabriel fan," Heaton says "Musically, because his songs are melodically simple and gorgeous, and then he builds them up from their simplicity with African drums, deep bass lines, rock drum loops and many harmonic layers, to be so large and moving. This is what we tried to do with this record. Build the songs up from their essence." Essentially speaking, Anne Heaton has been lauded by critics as "a keen observer of human nature" with "an uncanny ability to so succinctly and unpretentiously say what she has to say in her diary-like lyrics." She's been praised as "sweetly nostaligic without being overly sentimental and powerful without being melodramatic." The Boston Globe hailed her as "easily [one] of the area's most notable female singer-songwriters." And Chris Smith, former editor of Performing Songwriter magazine, wrote, "Heaton is one of the finest writers and performers I've come across in years -- she is one of the standards by which I measure talent in the New York music community. That she is not on a major label is nothing short of criminal." You can sample Anne's music at CD Baby: http://cdbaby.com/cd/heaton2 Now for the details: Sunday, April 4 2004 Join us at 4pm for snacks and drinks Mail yhc@smoe.org for reservations and directions The suggested donation is $15, which all goes to the performer. My house is just 2 blocks away from the Wakefield commuter rail station, and is just a mile from Route 128, with plenty of on-street parking. We can also arrange rides to and from the Oak Grove T stop in Malden. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Mar 2004 15:16:06 -0600 From: "Southpaw" Subject: Re: Anne Heaton House Concert April 4, 2004 What state & city is this in?? Then again, that album was the finest debut I'd heard by any singer-songwriter since Tori burst upon the scene. (With _Little Earthquakes_, that is, not _Y Kant Tori Read_. I figure you inferred that, but there are always a few wiseacres in the crowd.) Speaking of Tori, what's up with that rant by "a music fan" who can't even manage to spell her name correctly as he accuses her fans of overlooking her influences? I suppose we're stuck with it, but 4 out of 45 readers finding it helpful sounds about right. I mean, I like Kate and Rickie Lee as much as the next guy, but Tori brought something genuinely new to the party. If he can't deal with that, Amazon stocks approximately 71 Tori releases, so it's not as though there aren't more appropriate places for him to direct his bitterness. Um, anyway, so as not to be guilty of the same thing, back to _Warm Strangers_. It is a wonderful album. You should buy it. Vienna is pretty much incapable of writing filler, and the only thing preventing me from giving this album five stars is that it contains only two songs - -- "Harbor" and "My Medea" -- which I consider mind-blowingly brilliant, as compared to a half-dozen on _Waking Hour_. At the same time, "Shine" and "Anna Rose" are very pretty, "Hope on Fire" is Paula Cole meeting Ani DiFranco in a nifty political statement that represents a rarity for Vienna, "Feather Moon" takes some time to grow on you but is well worth the effort, and "Passage" has forever demolished my ill-conceived notion that a cappella tracks are automatically a bit dull. (As Tori did not with "Me and a Gun.") Vienna had many years to develop the songs on _Waking Hour_ -- she wrote "Say Uncle" when she was 16 -- and not so many to develop this batch. I'd say it shows, to some extent. Nonetheless, we're talking major talent here, folks. Get aboard the love train now, because something tells me that it's going to get mighty crowded. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Mar 2004 21:06:14 -0500 From: Philip David Morgan Subject: What's been in my shopping cart(s) Ekuto-sama, kon ban wa / ohayo gozaimasu: Alright, I guess I'll empty my shopping carts and tell you what's either been shipped or is on the way... Following the original tip-off to CD Baby's $5 disc sale, I didn't find myself with a lot of ecto-ish sounds, much less j-ecto (none of the Japanese indies I discovered on the site came up in the $5 surf), so I decided to fill some gaps in my overall Japanese music library - hence, two "art songs" CDs by Yoko Ojima (which would have otherwise cost me $17-18 each at Kinokuniya in Manhattan) and a disc from the Taka Koto Ensemble; the e-invoice suggests that another freebie sampler is also in that shipment. Over at Amazon, things got far more eclectic. I scarfed up _Memories are My Only Witness_, a collection of quirky instrumentals by Cibo Matto's Yuka Honda (Tzadik, part of their "Oracles" series); _I_ by Buffalo Daughter (Emperor Norton), _Roomic Cube_ by Takako Minekawa (March, produced by Buffalo Daughter), _Flower with No Color_ by Yoshimi & Yuka (yes, Ms. Honda again, in a collaboration) (Ipecac), and a Naxos CD of modern-day Japanese orchestral works (part of the budget classica label's new Japanese Classics series). As long as I just mentioned Amazon, I might as well add that I've gotten the green light to let my Associates account cover all of the websites I handle - - including Diane Wolkstein's framed-site , the frame-less homepage for the Storytelling Center, Inc. of New York City and my own personal homepage (URL below), which is about to get a serious makeover. Pretty soon, all three sites will have targeted Amazon links to specific books (including Diane's latest), anime and J-movie DVDs (_Memories_ will be among them), and of course, good music CDs - and (hope you'll understand, Ethan) they _will_ include Vienna Teng's _Warm Strangers_ (enthusiastically). I also have associate accounts with HKFlix and YesAsia (why not?). I'd tell you what specifically have been in my carts over at Jungle (the anime/tokusatsu cult shop in Osaka) and J-List (no adult product, so relax) - - but I'm not ready to get chased off Ecto, so... Philip David (alright - folk song discs from J-List, "I've" albums from Jungle - so sue me) 2004.03.25-26 n.p.: _Memories are My Only Witness_ - Yuka Honda later: _Saturday Night Special_ (CD single) - Strawberry Record n.r.: Shifting between _Treasures of the Heart_ by Diane Wolkstein and the English edition of _Azumanga Daioh_ (Vol. 1) by Kiyohiko Azuma (the first anime DVD streets in late April here) - --- http://homepage.mac.com/pollyshows/ - --- "This is not ALL 'rock'n'roll,' dude." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Mar 2004 22:43:29 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: off topic Hi, anna maria mentioned: >well it's kinda off topic but to my joy the underrated >series northern exposure is getting a dvd release. Yay!! A mention of _Northern Exposure_ isn't as off-topic as you might think. That show's soundtrack was stunningly ectophilic ... I recall several threads on ecto involving the music on the previous night's show, back in the day. I particularly remember the episode that ended with Loreena McKennitt's "Tango To Evora" in the foreground. I just about fell over when that started! I don't know if I'll end up getting the entire series on DVD, but there are a few episodes I definitely have to have, the trebuchet one being the first in line. ;> =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #85 **************************
