The last time I saw Land of the Blind at Saturday market was by absolute accident/fate. On a total whim I decided to stop by Saturday Market on my way to somewhere else. (Which I rarely do because of the crowds.) Just as I arrived, they started playing. Perfect timing! BTW, Those that missed the last Blind house concert in Salem missed a GREAT concert. Good food, good alcohol and great music! - -- Alan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Sep 2003 02:08:25 -0700 (PDT) From: anna maria "stjärnell" Subject: artists in song hi.. after Bowie's great cover of Pablo Picasso by Jonathan Richman i was wondering what other ectohiles consider the best songs about painters.. leonor by katell keineg gets my vote as well. anna maria np-davie bowie-reality __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I don't know many, but Dar Williams' Mark Rothko Song makes me want go and see his paintings as she does, and for that alone I consider it one of the best. =========== The blue it speaks so full It's like the beauty one can barely stand Or too much things dropped in your hand And there's a green like the peace In your heart sometimes Printed underneath the sheets of ashy snow And there's a blue like where the urban angels go, very bright =========== Sander ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Sep 2003 08:10:30 -0400 From: "Robert Lovejoy" Subject: Robert Palmer No one as yet has mentioned the passing of rock crooner Robert Palmer, so I'll jump in. Palmer died Friday morning of a heart attack at age 54. While his music did not fall into the ecto category, he was a talented artist and will be missed. My favorite song of his was "John and Mary". It was fun music and had a fascinating use of bass. http://www.robertpalmer.com/ Peace, Bob Lovejoy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Sep 2003 08:19:47 EDT From: AzeemAK@aol.com Subject: Re: Robert Palmer In a message dated 27/09/2003 13:11:29 GMT Daylight Time, rlovejoy@comcast.net writes: My favorite song of his was "John and Mary". It was fun music and had a fascinating use of bass. And he may well have had a lot to do with that - he was a very proficient musician as well as everything else, and indeed plays bass on his last album. This is my mini tribute: I was really startled to read that Robert Palmer has died. Somehow, with some people, it's not a shock, either because they have been ill or have led notoriously dissolute lives, or both. But Robert Palmer, who once described himself as "a boring old muso", didn't seem to fit that mould. He was only 54. Most people will have known him for Addicted to Love, and more particularly its unforgettably lascivious video. One commentator (Don Letts) suggested that the video was a brilliant smokescreen to draw attention away from "a singer who has to spend every waking hour hanging on a mic stand" - and I don't think Palmer would have argued with that. Anyway, there was a lot more to the man than that slice of arrant sexism. I think he was a really great and vastly underrated singer, as well as a witty and idiosyncratic songwriter. For his singing chops, check out his version of Marvin Gaye's I Want You, which took a certain amount of flak for its perceived "blue-eyed soul" pretensions - most of us will just hear a man singing his guts out and nailing the desperation of the song. Then there's his lovely rendition of It Could Happen To You, where he showed how beautifully he could croon. He wrote some terrific songs; one of my favourite lines of his was from Change His Ways: "She had a dimple in her favour" - I love that! And he could write songs that sounded like standards, such as She Makes My Day and Happiness. He wasn't consistent, even within records: his 1990 double album Don't Explain opened with three outright duds, a so-so version of Dreams To Remember, followed by another dud. So, that's Side 1 sorted then! However, from that moment on it's high quality and stylistic diversity all the way. I'm sorry he's gone ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Sep 2003 12:54:51 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: artists in song Hi, >after Bowie's great cover of Pablo Picasso by Jonathan >Richman Is that the "Pablo Picasso ... was never called ... an a--hole" song that I always loved so much from _Repo Man_? What meth said. Emily Carr is an icon here in the Pacific Northwest, and I've read no less than three books of poetry about her (and her own many books) to the point where I actually was a little bit tired of her--and Veda made her come alive for me again in real human complexity rather than iconic form. It's the same song, though I understand that it is quite different from the original (which I'm embarrassed to admit that I can't recall at all though I know that I've heard it). The new Bowie is quite good. I was dubious about how it would be, since I found "Heathen" to be a forgettable snorefest, but this one is really energetic. We've been playing it a lot at the snore, and I've had one of the hooks from "Pablo Picasso" stuck in my head for days. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Sep 2003 14:01:01 -0700 From: Steve VanDevender Subject: Re: artists in song Neile Graham writes: > meredith wrote: > > >My vote is for Veda Hille's entire album about Emily Carr, _Here Is > >A Picture_, which is her most consistently brilliant and affecting > >work to date. > > What meth said. > > Emily Carr is an icon here in the Pacific Northwest, and I've read no > less than three books of poetry about her (and her own many books) to > the point where I actually was a little bit tired of her--and Veda > made her come alive for me again in real human complexity rather > than iconic form. That's quite an accomplishment. I too can highly recommend _Here Is A Picture_. I know nothing about Emily Carr than what I could glean from the album, but it's really remarkable piece of work. I need to get around to getting Veda's other albums (I have only _Spine_ and _Here Is A Picture_). ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Sep 2003 22:20:44 -0400 From: Philip David Morgan Subject: Jane Siberry - Tour and album update Namasti: Jane Siberry fans in NY and TO should love this news...
