I couldn't tell how many people were familiar with her music, but the audience was attentive and she got a great response. I got the feeling that there may have been some Emm Gryner fans in the room whose interest was especially piqued by Happy's interpretations of David Bowie, since Emm has performed with Bowie herself. Terami Hirsch was in top form tonight, and turned in what I thought was the most powerful performance of the evening in terms of raw emotion. In keeping with the RAINN theme, she played a song off her first album that she said she rarely sings live because of its personal nature. Unfortunately the title escapes me now, but by the end of it she was holding back real tears. She gracefully recovered during a two-minute piano interlude which ultimately built into a verse from a strong new song that will be found on her forthcoming album. Her set ran about 45 minutes in total. By the way, I believe Terami might have had something to do with Happy being on the bill tonight - I understand she recommended her to the organizers when this show was being put together. Emm Gryner does good pop music and is usually a strong live performer, and tonight was no exception. She was accompanied by a female cellist who added a nice touch to the set. One of the highlights of an Emm show is her sense of humor, and she was "on" tonight with some typically funny self-deprecation. I saw a few Ectofolk at the show, and met Jeff Burka for the first time. I think Jeff is one of the first strangers I ever exchanged E-mails with upon discovering the Internet and joining Ecto way back in the '90s. ;) So it was a highlight to finally put a face to the name after all these years. Great show, and a memorable night! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Sep 2003 09:18:34 -0400 From: Mark Chapman Subject: Happy in Bryn Mawr Jeff wrote... > Wow. Just...wow. > Happy was spectacular tonight at The Point for the RAINN fundraiser. I enjoyed the casual atmosphere and the nice stage setup. It was unfortunate that the staff seemed to suffer a lengthy case of "butterfingers," including letting a trayful of dishes and flatware crash to the floor during the first couple of minutes of Happy's set. Accidents will happen, but how much effort does it take to be a little more conscientious than that? The light-fare menu offerred plenty to pick from, and I'd be inclined to return to The Point if I lived nearby. Happy and Bob were great as usual, but their set was too short (37", including a minimum amount of stage "banter"). Another couple of songs would have been welcome. Terami Hirsch and Emm Gryner offerred fine sets. I'm sure that their fans thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It was nice to meet Jeff and Dan. I'm sure there were other Ecto list members there, but I didn't ask around. Anyone else? I would like to add my voice to the chorus of praise for Kevin Bartlett's Near Life Experience. I finally ordered NLE from CD Baby and received it the other day. I have listened to it a number of times to allow me to really absorb everything that is going on in the many layers of Kevin's music. NLE is an absolutely beautiful and brilliant CD. It is atmospheric and dreamy, at times powerful, and other times uplifting. It is a symphonic masterpiece. The music is in the vein of electronic music and neo-classical, maybe even new age. Some of that kind of music can feel cold and sterile. Many offerings of the genre have a contrived feeling to them. NLE is warm and passionate throughout. Kevin's guitar playing adds a lot of the flare to the material. His guitar influences are integrated thoroughly into his own mature style. They are acknowledged in the liner notes of NLE and subtlety apparent in his playing (Fripp, Page, Hendrix). The lush keyboard soundscapes and intricate musical arrangements remind me of mix of Tangerine Dream, Christopher Franke (especially his Babylon V soundtrack work), Kitaro, Ademius and Mythos with some Mike Oldfield, Pink Floyd and King Crimson thrown in for good measure. With that said, Kevin has created his own unique vision. The artists I mention in comparison are just a frame of reference. At the risk of making a semi-controversial observation, I must say that it is a shame that Kevin and Happy are not working together anymore. After hearing NLE, it is even more apparent to me what Kevin brought to the table in all of Happy's work. I listened again to my two favorite Happy CDs, MWABT and The Keep, from that perspective. I really appreciate his contributions to the overall atmospheric and magical feel of Happy's music. As wonderful as any new material from Happy will be, it won't be the same without Kevin's musical stamp on it. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Sep 2003 16:47:26 EDT From: AzeemAK@aol.com Subject: Re: concerning spam and BETH GIBBONS In a message dated 08/09/2003 19:39:31 GMT Daylight Time, iflin@speakeasy.net writes: << on other news, someone mentioned the solo album that BETH GIBBONS did with RUSTIN MAN. the album has not been released here in the States yet, but it is scheduled for domestic release on OCT 7th. i expect that there will be more chit chat about it then. i downloaded some of the tracks, in my haste to listen to it without paying outrageous import prices, and have to say that the few times i listened to it, i wasn't as enthralled as i thought i would be. >> As for me, I think it's a masterpiece, my favourite album of last year! The all-star cast of guests on his final album alone -- Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Ry Cooder, Joe Walsh, Tom Petty, Emmylou Harris, Dwight Yoakam, Jackson Browne -- is testament to just how respected this man was. Rightfully so. BTW, it looks like VH1 is preempting its scheduled programming tonight to rebroadcast its recent special featuring Warren, at 10pm PST/EST and again at midnight. I hear it's good. (any other oldtime DJs here from the cueing up an album days?) I was in college radio when CDs really started to take over for good, and the only LPs that came in as new releases were special pressings (like the clear blue version of Midnight Oil's _Blue Sky Mine_) ... but we still had plenty of vinyl in the stacks, and two very nice turntables in the studio which I used often. I used to play "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead" a lot -- that song just cracked me up. What I've heard of _The Wind_ hasn't really been my cup o' tea, but I do have the utmost respect for the way Zevon faced his fate with absolute courage and dignity. I'm glad he lived to see the album hit the stores -- I hope he was able to appreciate the good reviews it's been getting. >I'm still kicking myself for missing his Letterman appearance last fall. >Don't know how I managed to do that :-( I missed it too, but I wouldn't at all be surprised to see the appearance rebroadcast soon, maybe even as soon as tonight. Letterman was a friend of Zevon's, and I wouldn't put it past him to pre-empt his show for it as a tribute. I'm going to have TiVo grab Letterman for the next few days, just in case. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Sep 2003 16:23:29 -0700 From: "Peter Clark" Subject: Re: concerning spam and BETH GIBBONS Aaaack!!
