Kate appears on hour three (numbers 60 through 41) on the 100 Greatest Women of Rock. I don't know why I'm so worried someone would miss it--it's really not too big a deal, but they do show clips from some of her videos and they even have a clip of Kate talking about her music. Upon seeing Kate actually talking about her music, I decided to forgive her for "The Red Shoes" and now I'm actually finding it quite enjoyable after six years of not being too thrilled with it. Maybe some of you will, too. Josh _____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? It is a lighter album. You don't have to get so involved with it. 2. Happy reveals more of her sense of humor on this album in songs like "Dying" and "If I Ever See the Girl Again". 3. I bought it in the winter and I always enjoy music more in the winter. I bought "Equipoise" this summer. So, there you have it, folks. It will be fun to read some of the other survey results. Paula Cole? I'm not going to complain too much about their ranking....I'm glad they ranked KaTe before Tori, and was pleasantly surprised to see Rickie Lee Jones at #30, with big divas like Whitney Houston and Gloria Estefan in the '70s and '80s. So it wasn't completely sales driven. I guess this whole ranking was developed after surveying all these women themselves, and who they thought were important. Well, duh! I quite enjoyed David Bowie's enthusiastic commentaries. What VH1 does have on their site is an assortment of recommended albums by some of the artists on this list. Some of the descriptions for these albums had me in stitches, so I cut and pasted to share: >>Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love" One of the most important albums of the '80s, Kate Bush's finest British hits like "Running Up That Hill" are on the first side, while the second is one of the scariest concept pieces ever recorded - about a woman slowly dying under ice. Bush's matchless voice made it sound brittle, heartfelt and as one song put it "Cloudbusting".<< I agree, "The Ninth Wave" is scary. But it's not really *just* about dying under ice, is it? I get so annoyed when critics sum up a concept album into one short sentence. >>Sarah McLachlan's "Surfacing" The album that ate America's coffee tables, this calculated attempt at reintroducing an impressionable audience to what might happen if you learn songwriting from the Play David Crosby in a Day songbook is one of the most terrifying records ever made.>> HUH?! >>Sarah Vaughan When a voice takes flight, even if it's Mister Mister signing "Kyrie," then they're paying a debt to Miss Sarah Vaughan, the empress dowager of scat.>> Is VH1 high?! What do people here think of him? Watching him I > could only wonder if Dylan's early shows were like this. I had never really thought I would like Ben Lee until I heard his newest single, "Nothing Much Happens." It sort of sounds like a Psychedelic Furs song to me. Being a sucker for anything that reminds me of the 80s, I bought the album _Breathing Tornados_. I like it a lot. It's a nice blend of acoustic sounds and keyboards. I've never seen him live, so I can't really comment on that. But I don't hear much Dylan in the album. Of course, that's a good thing for me since I have never been able to appreciate Bob Dylan. Anyway, the album is worth checking out. It's on _The Avengers_ soundtrack and the _Ain't Nuthin' But a She Thing_ compilation. "Christine Lavin Could Do It"? That'd be a cool ending to a side. :) Vance Gilbert has another song he wrote about Ellis Paul, what is it, "Taking It All To Tennessee"? Great song. (Vance is right -- friends should write love songs to friends more often.) There's also some prog-rock band that did a song about Kate Bush, but I'm blanking on the name of both the band and the song, so that's not going to help you at all. :} And if you come to ectofest, you can hear the world premiere of The Ectoplasms' soon-to-be-worldwide-hit, "I Want To Be Rachael Sage"! ;> (Ask Chuck for the details, since I haven't quite dared...) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | ectofest '99: sat. sept. 4, 1999 kenosia park, danbury, ct | | http://www.ectofest.org | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jul 1999 22:27:55 -0400 From: Paul Kim Subject: Re: phil collins cover? I'm pleased to say that I have a new CD out via mp3.com's DAM label. It's the score from my 1992 theatre piece, "Shekhinah: The Presence". It's rather different from other stuff of mine that you might have heard -- for one thing, it's mostly other people's voices. Some is ambient, some sounds a bit industrial, and some is gently melodic. You can listen to all the tracks in RealAudio format (and, if you're so moved, buy the CD for $5.99) at http://ecom.mp3.com/cgi-bin/order.cgi?cd_id=13939&srclk=ld Complete liner notes (both in HTML and in PDF format, as a page that folds into the packaging) are available at http://silence.metatronpress.com/artists/zitt/sh.html Enjoy! - -- | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Shekhinah: The Presence http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 14:21:28 +1000 From: Andrew Fries Subject: Re: Blatant Self Promotion: My New CD, "Shekhinah: The Presence" On Fri, 30 Jul 1999, Joseph Zitt wrote: >It's rather different from other stuff of mine that you might have >heard -- for one thing, it's mostly other people's voices. I haven't heard this new one yet, but I just thought this is as good time as any to mention how much fun I'm having with Joseph's previous, "gentle entropy". Well, perhaps "fun" might not be the right word - what I meant is I enjoy it a lot. It's very different from my usual fare, yet nothing is totally unique - it took me a while to make this connection, but "gentle entropy" reminds me of a choir of Tibetan monks I once heard... - ------------------------------------------------------ 62,400 repetitions make one truth. - Aldous Huxley - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 00:24:31 -0400 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: songwriters writing about songwriters At 11:16 PM -0400 7/30/99, Joseph Zitt wrote: >On Fri, Jul 30, 1999 at 07:35:57PM -0400, Ofer Inbar wrote: >> I've had this thought floating in my head for a while to make a tape >> of songs that songwriters have written about other songwriters. >> Things like Dar Williams' "You're Aging Well" and Vance Gilbert's >> "When Jimmy Falls in Love" and Jim Infantino's "When The Great Man >> Falls".
