I had a crummy job working at a (plant) nursery the summer of '82. One of the few pleasures I had that summer was hearing Eye to Eye's "Nice Girl" come on the car radio on the way home from work (that and Patrice Rushen's [sp?] "Forget Me Nots"-- it was that kind of summer.) ------------------------------ From: Emmy May Lombaerts Date: Thu, 11 Jan 1996 15:34:31 +0100 (MET) Subject: Male Ecto and, erm, Debbie Gibson Marcel Rijs wrote: >_Howard Jones_ >This man started out as a very trendy person, but his later work was more >introspective and, well, beautiful. Here's my take: Poe makes me wonder how Suzanne Vega would have done cast as _Tank Girl._ There's also some Sheryl Crow in her voice (thankgod, _only_ in her voice), there's some Waitresses, and yes, some Portishead, but only on a couple songs where the layering gets a bit more complex. I love her lyrics -- what I've caught so far, a any rate -- there's a lot of TankGirly dancing-in-the-face-of-danger pranksterismishness 'n junk. Now, Ruby -- RubyRubyRuby. Will I ever grow tired of this album? Can't see it. The more I hear of it, the less I bemoan DanielleDax's absence (yes, I have the new stuff, but it hardly makes up). Ruby is much more sample-heavy, like Garbage, but is still much more than Garbage. Garbage is to Ruby what Milla is to KaTe: Lots of spirit, lots of potential, but no maturity. I hope Ruby stays together and grows -- they'll be great if they follow, say, the Pranks-to-Commentary example of the Beastie Boys, or the cheesy-synthpop-cookie to Empress- of-the-Universe example of Jane Siberry. --charleydarbo ------------------------------ From: art@cs.sfu.ca Date: Thu, 11 Jan 96 09:15:01 PST Subject: Re: rose chronicles and other things nettwerkish Michael Doyle wrote: >And isn't there a new Rose Chronicles album in the works? In addition to Dead and Gone to Heaven (first cd ep) and Shiver (first full length cd), Rose Chronicles released a cd single Glide (Free Above) which contains some remixes. The last I heard was that they were to record their new album in the late fall, early winter. I haven't heard anything new. I'll send them an email to see what the current status is. (If anyone wants to contact them, they are reachable at roses@helix.net.) You can find more about RC and other Nettwerk folks on Nettweb which has lots of information. I have no connections with Nettwerk, but they seem to be adding a few new artists that should interest ectofolk: Wild Strawberries - a personal favorite - have recently moved over to Nettwerk. Their new disc will even be released in the US of A in the near future. Cam - apparently a Swedish singist - one tune on Decadence - the 10th anniversary Nettwerk box thingie - sounds promising - disc due in summer. Autour de Lucie - a band from France - I picked up their full length and a couple of singles when in France last year. I like them quite a bit although they are on the softer side of things that I listen to. Neile wasn't overly impressed, as I recall. Anyway, their first full length cd will be released by Nettwerk here in the near future. Tara MacLean - a Canadian singist - one tune on Slow Brew (and also on Lit from Within) and another on Decadence. She did a nice tune during the Nettwerk 10th Anniversary concert. Her cd is due in the spring. Oh yeah, for anyone who hasn't seen it, one of the highlights for me on Decadence is the version of Girl from Ipanema done by Sarah McLachlan and Tom Hooper (of Ginger) singing in front of Sarah's band. This is live from the Nettwerk 10th Anniversary concert which was a wonderful night. Better get back to some serious lurking. Bye. In France you can hear Voulzy a lot on radio and I really don't like his music. It makes me think of marshmallow, very soft and "gluey". I find his lyrics silly, too. If you want to try someone with the same style but with more interesting music and lyrics try Alain Souchon. They write all their songs together but Souchon play the "hardest" ones. I can't believe you don't remember. I just assumed you remembered everything ever posted to ecto. Anyway, the album is called _The Return_. It's a really great disc.
